I have been teasing this series for a very long time...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a twenty episode retrospective on every Sega developed arcade racing game in 3D! Because whether its retro gaming or modern pc gaming...Sega is the KING of the arcade racing genre! So buckle up and get ready for a retrogaming ride!
THE RULES FOR INCLUSION: 1) It must have had an arcade release (So no Sega GT) 2) It must be in 3D (Bye Bye Outrunners, etc etc) and 3) you MUST be racing against an opponent and not just a timer (sorry Crazy Taxi, Wild Riders)
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,

Up next: OutRun 2 ! I mean it when I say it...OutRun 2 is IN MY OPINION the best racing video game ever made...arcade or home console! It's just straight up retro gaming perfection in every way possible; as the sequel to OutRun and Outrunners from Sega...as a stand alone arcade game...or as the Xbox version or PS2 version! I am playing OutRun 2006: Coast to Coast...as there are variant versions! And this time I decided to show a video game console version so everyone who isn't into arcade collecting or emulation can get in on the fun.
It's great on PS2 in 480p with widecreen...or you can toss it into PCSX2!
Don't forget we also did OutRun 2 SP SDX as well and you can view that here! • OutRun 2 SP SDX! The B... as it's the arcade version of Sega's all time arcade racing classic!

This has also become my favorite arcade racer as well. Just bought a modded Xbox to play this and the coast 2 coast version. the game really needs a modern re-release!
Yes we need a rerelease and an OutRun 3...at the same time!
@@VideoGameEsoterica I feel like a OutRun 3 would end up like a Daytona 3, but OutRun 2 does needs a crossplatform rerelease with online features
Well yes we don’t want it to be a Daytona 3 quality game lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica I wonder what they could add to the formula to make an outrun 3 actually, seems like there's not a lot
Not much. Give us 30 new tracks, same gameplay, modern graphics, online components / leaderboards, etc
What a game, and what a cabinet. I remember that there was an “half car” chassis with force feedback, vibrations and bumps.
Yes the giant car sized cabinet was amazing. Sadly not easy to find any longer
@@VideoGameEsoterica I saw one a few months ago in my town but didn’t have the time to go for a ride 😔
Oh C'MON man! ANOTHER insanely exceptional vid? How long can you keep this up? You mentioned towards the end that OR2 is perfection, and that's true. But you know what else is perfection? This video series of Sega 3D arcade racers! 100% perfection and a strong 10/10! Keep up the good work brother. I haven't missed a vid in this series yet, and look forward to the next one. Cheers.
Aww thanks. More coming!
A perfect racing game. It's my favorite game ! 💯
It genuinely is “perfect”
They have this arcade cabinet near where I live, and its such a blessing to play it. Playing it at the arcade cabinet is a whole difference experience.
Yes the cabinet really does make a huge difference in the fun factor
I love this game. I play the PC version upscaled to 4k with my docked Steam Deck. It's pure, unadulterated joy. A true gem and an advertisement for gaming itself.
It’s funny how it’s easier to upscale the PC version to 4K on Deck than it is to run PS2 version on Deck
@@VideoGameEsoterica haha yeah!
There is an another version for pc Outrun2 SP DX
Yes. I did a video on the one on Teknoparrot
@@VideoGameEsoterica Based on that video its become my favorite racer game! Since then i collected all version available.
All I can say is what I said before, they absolutely nailed OR2.🙌
I’m respectfully going to ask for a Power Drift 2 with modern graphics before we get an OR3.
Will never happen but hey I can dream!😅
Life’s been busy lately but thanks as always for your superb content VGE!👌
Always happy to make the content :)
Py Jama you might find some enjoyment in Sega's Kart racing games while hoping for Power Drift 2: Sonic and Sega All Star Racing, and Sonic and Sega All Star Racing Transformed.
These games are basically Sega's versions of Nintendo's Mario Kart games. They have lots of courses, characters and unlockables. Racing Transformed brings all that as well as courses which transform over time and your vehicle will also transform (Kart / Boat / Airplane) depending on the path you take.
There is also Sonic Team Racing but I have yet to play that one.
The arcade machine is insane especially when you have a 2nd player. Anytime you crash or go to another round it switches to the other player. A lot of fun
I haven’t seen a cabinet (the full size one) in some years sadly
A big part of SP for me was the addition of a score. You get points for obvious things like overtaking the rivals and finishing with a good time, but there are lots of other things you can do such as slipstreaming cars in and out of the junctions and the best players can manipulate the traffic to the point where they can slipstream almost all of the way through the game. In the original arcade version of Outrun 2 you're just playing against the clock, but they added all of that scoring functionaility to the levels in Coast2Coast which gives it some extra depth for me.
People do love a good score attack. Its never been my thing but I get that a lot of people would gravitate towards that mechanic
I believe Technoparrot emulates the arcade version perfectly.
It requires a bit of graphical patching but otherwise it does and I showcased that enhanced version earlier this year
Literally downloaded this last night on the Deck to find this video today. Just another reminder how cool your channel is and inherently you lol
Hahaha thanks. Appreciate it
This game is awesome I never had the chance to play it as a kid or when it released on the arcades... maybe I did but I do not remember.
I was looking for arcade racers and I gave this game a try and I am not disappointed, it's such an amazing game from music to atmosphere to the driving especially when you hook up a steering wheel with the Outrun 2 FXT mod the gameplay just becomes 10x better than just using a keyboard or a controller and you have so much control and you just want to keep repeating those stages just to see if you can get a better time and improve your driving skills.
This game has endless replayability and it also has online and I had the pleasure of enjoying it with my friends and we all loved it. My favorite track in the OST has to be Night Flight but honestly the whole sound track is excellent.
It really is the total package and there is nothing I would change
I have had too much stuff and things going on plus haven't been too chipper lately to watch (but have got a playlist of the episodes I've missed so that I can watch them when things are better and less hectic); however, I absolutely had to just watch this one anyways. Now, this isn't my favorite Sega racer or arcade racer of all time, but that's simply because Daytona USA 2 exists. Instead, Outrun 2 fights with Cruis'n World, Mario Kart 64, and the PC version of Need for Speed: Porsche Unleased for my 2nd favorite driving game (sometimes my favorites shift and Rush makes it up there and Crazy Taxi too [if that even counts, but I love it either way]). But, in a world where Daytona 2 didn't exist, I could definitely see Outrun 2 being my number 1 on some days depending on my mood. I didn't play this in the arcades before the XBox port, but it was a pre-order for me. Same with Coast 2 Coast: pre-ordered the Xbox version, and then picked up the PSP port. It's fun in all incarnations, even if the PSP version isn't quite as nice. I still haven't played an Outrun 2 nor SP cab, which is a travesty! Some day, hopefully...until then I still pop Coast 2 Coast in the XBox every few months, and still so much fun. Amazing job on the video, Anthony; keep up the great work!
Hey you reappeared! I’ve noticed you’ve been quiet lately. Hope things improve soon!
I get that a lot of people will think Daytona 2 or Scud Race are the best and that’s a total valid opinion. OutRun 2 just always “hits” for me though. Maybe because it’s not track based but “run” based and I always loved that
Love this game!!! Good coverage!!!
Its one of the best racing games ever made hands down!
Outrun 2 in any form and/or variation is my favorite video game of all-time. High praise from a person who has been playing video games and arcades since 1985. This game possesses everything I personally need in a gaming experience. Period.
It’s the total package. Fun, easy to pick up, hard to master
Love this game. I played it on XBOX so much, that even my son loves this game 😀
The best part is you can just hand the controller to someone and they immediately get into it
Such a brilliant video
Appreciate it!
I adore this game. It’s amazing. I’ve got the PC version running on my Steam Deck and gaming PC, and it’s beautiful.
It’s a very pretty game. Graphics hold up so well
The best game that Sega ever made. We need a third sequel
100% we need an outrun 3
oh man I love OR2006! I found it at a pawnshop while visiting my dad for one whole dollar! I couldn't believe it so it was definitely a must-buy! always been a huge fan of SEGA's racing stuff at least since daytona, so checking out OR2 it's sooooo good! and not to mention the great tunes and remixes, it's good stuff! definitely a super fun one.
Haha I paid $2. We both got a deal
@@VideoGameEsoterica oh wow! haha. guess they didn't realize what they had... but that's great too!
I bought it like 18 years ago so 😂
I had a lot of fun playing Outrun 2.
Burnout 3: Takedown is on the same tier for me.
Burnout is a legit series for sure. You should check our Thrill Drive if you like Burnout
Great game , think I might have a tinkle on this later today 👍
Have a tinkle? Lol you are gonna have to explain that one to me
Fantastic driving game. I have the Japanese version on original Xbox which is the closest to the arcade as it has all the glitches fixed that were on other versions. Simply THE best driving game ever. 😊
I have the US Xbox version myself
I play the pc version on my steam deck everyday. Best arcade racing game ever.
Every day eh?
What's funny is I really in my heart of hearts thought it would be this game haha! Nice!!
Haha a solid assumption for sure
It does look like a cracking game to play.
Def play it if you never have
Love love love this game! So good. Lately I've been playing the PS2 version on my Steam Deck. It does have some issues though sadly, so you have to keep the resolution pretty low for it to run smoothly.
Yes that is a bummer as Deck is a great place to play PS2 stuff
There's a PC version (think it only came out on disc in Europe, tends to go for 20-30 quid in the UK) runs really well on the deck at 800p, copied the install on my PC over to my deck, had to add both the game exe and the config exe as non-steam games and run the config to get it to recognise the Deck's graphics adapter, but after that you can just run the game exe and it's great, also looks great playing on a PC at 4k. It's locked at 60hz which is a shame but that doesn't really matter on a Steam Deck. It's such a great game to play on the Deck, I need to see if the PC version of Sega Rally Revo works well on it too.
Interesting. Good to know! Sounds like it’s not an easy setup but a worth it one
You'll want to try Slipstream it's basically outrun 3. One guy made it it's an homage to Outrun with Sonic references.
Sumo digital who ported Outrun 2 did Hotshot Racing very Segaish too.
I’ve been meaning to play Slipstream for forever. Then again I’ve been meaning to play a LOT for forever 😂
Too many games just indies alone will keep me busy.
I basically just play games for YT now
Fully agree!! And they used some of the mechanic on Sonic racing transformed, also an amazing game, and actually a very very close competitor simply for the larger depth of gameplay with neat equally good mechanics. I have them both on my racing cabinet, man I could play all day and never get sick of them
*near
I love the Sonic games. I may do a bonus episode on the one that never came out in arcades. We shall see!
Sonic Racing was made by Sumo who did the port of Outrun 2, that's why the drifting is so good in Sonic Racing.
It’s too bad we haven’t seen a new Sonic racing game in awhile
Pushing Algo' Baby
haha keep pushing!
Coast2Coast is the better version as the handling is more forgiving, and obviously you get all the tracks. It's a shame they didn't put all 30 tracks together in one race. On vanilla Outrun 2 a few of the challenge races are 30 tracks - all 15 reversed then all 15 the right way round. I think the reason it's not available anymore and there hasn't been an Outrun 3 is mainly due to the Ferrari liscence.
Yes Id love to back to back the full 30 as one mega run. That would have been epic
I would take and Outrun 3 with GTA style lookalike cars, take an Outrunners approach (different styles of cars with different characteristics/abilities) or do an homage to Sega race cars for your selection: the racecars from Turbo, Monaco GP, Rad Mobile/Gale Racer, Power Drift, Virtua Racing, Hang On (if you want to include bikes)...
Sounds like a good time!
Fun fact: The real life sponsors in these games were the main sponsors for Ferrari's F1 team
Tracks as Sega and Ferrari seems to have a great relationship
@@VideoGameEsoterica Also I was suprised you didn't get any weird copyright claims like last time
Nothing this time thankfully
It's my favorite arcade racing too. For the PS2 I prefer the Japanese version released after the PAL and NTSC US, because it is better in some aspects such as antialiasing and the framerate is fixed at 60 FPS as it does not suffer from those rare framerate drops present in the other versions, also it has a slightly better image quality overall.
p.s. At 480p on a CRT monitor via the PS2's native VGA output it's just perfect. 😎
So many diff versions of the game
I love this game to death. The moment I saw an arcade in Canada with the whole simulation aspect (moving car seat, etc), I decided to leave my time trial high score and leave my mark. But otherwise, ever heard of Slipstream? It's basically a case of, if Sega don't, indie does.
I’ve heard of it. Just need to actually play it
@@VideoGameEsoterica niiice~. I don't think it's trying to dethrone Outrun 2 or anything, rather just fill the void as it has some of its own identity through some of its other modes.
We need more arcade racers that’s for sure
I need more than 60 fps. I also need a cold beer.
Its 8:50 AM where you are...you should have been drinking two hours ago. Late start!
I Can't believe that outrun 2 is 20 years old already lol 🙂
Almost old enough to drink
@@VideoGameEsoterica it's old enough to drink in the U.K we can drink at 18 lol
Haha that is true
@@VideoGameEsoterica I don't like drinking to be honest lol
One of my fav hobbies lol
greatest game of all time
As far as racing games go I’d agree!
There is a native PC port of this game but has since been delisted from Steam due to the licence between SEGA and Ferrari ending. This does mean that game technically falls into the abandonware territory as Sega can no longer sell the game.
Such a bummer that happened
you should take a lot at the speedrunning community. we're really small but any visibility would help :')
Got a link?
Avoid the meteors.
I played a lot on Xbox. Good times.
An awesome version for sure
I love the Outrun 2 series, esp Online Arcade version on 360. It looks so clean and crisp compared to even the og XB version of C2C
The nice part is its aged so well. Still looks modern enough
you don't even have to emulate it, there is a PC version with "FXT" mods to make it more graphically accurate
Yes but since I did the enhanced arcade release already I wanted to do a console pivot for the OG version
Hit the Ghosts
What did the ghosts do to deserve that?
OutRun Online Arcade on the 360 and PS3 is the best looking version, shame it's not available anymore...
Classic Sega...taking away vs giving!
If you mod your console you can still download it
Yes there are other means to enjoy it…lol
I downloaded it on my 360 just the other day, couldnt remember purchasing it!! I know NUTS considering i have Daytona on my 360 & Series X and loved that and the original Outrun for years.
So just really finding this now really.
Is it worth Buying Coast 2 Coast if you have Online Arcade version ??
Not sure i agree with the tag of Best Racing game ever made.
Play some of these…..
Super Mario Kart (SNES)
PGR 2, 3 or 4
Fzero X
Wipeout 64
Fzero GX
Believe me when i say Fzero GX is without any doubt the Best Arcade Type Racing game ever made, it has way more depth as good as this game is. Also made my Sega
Those are all great racing games but I stand by “best ever” :)
PC version is also great. Though they made a stupid mistake and put a file in the wrong folder, making bloom and sun flare effects not working. You can simply move that file to the correct folder to fix it, lol.
Classic Sega lol
Developed by a UK studio Sumo to run on original Xbox
Sumo did quality work
The best outrun 2 version is on the Xbox 360 which now runs well on Xenia Emulator but honestly I don't like it too much because of the clumsy art style.
Sure the drifting is fun and comes directly from Daytona USA but this is mostly what the gameplay is all about and nothing else. At least the tracks are rich.
I'll still put SCUD Race above anything else on my end and Daytona 2 right next to it.
We like those games because they were fresh and new so expecting new episodes from those now old licences would only ruin our fond memories.
Instead it's nice to appreciate whatever new driving game licence come out and give a try at becoming the next wonderful arcade game.
I would then list those as worthy successors : NFS Underground Arcade (Yes it exists), Project Gotham Racing 4, Driveclub, GRID Legends, Asphalt 9 Legends Arcade.
Daytona 2 and Scud Race are up there for me but OutRun 2 will always be the top slot
Were you a fan of the first Outrun and OutRunners before playing Outrun 2 ?
I like OutRun. I love OutRunners
The good thing about this port is that it's based on Chihiro. Meaning all the original (very important) blooming and glowing goodness is intact. The not so good things are no slipstreaming and a too flat 1st person cam. Both were remedied with OR2SP/Coast 2 Coast which is great but the downside is that the XBox version is based on the PS2 lead platform. So it's little less bloomy and more grainy. The PC port is the worst in this regard. 360 OR2SP Arcade is meh and PS3 actually not bad. But even OR2 SP (Teknoparrot) doesn't look as good as Chihiro. 2:38 is a good example of the overexaggerated lighting.
There are basically TOO MANY versions of OutRun 2 and each one has its pros and cons. Almost like Sega should release a NEW version combining everything for current gen consoles and PC...and maybe OutRun 3 while they are at it!
Watching this video made me want to boot up my steam copy of this game! Glad I bought it before it got delisted ages ago.
Doesn't the Xbox version of Outrun 2 have exclusive tracks? Are they worth playing?
The Xbox version is fun too...never know...maybe a third episode will appear!
You can just buy the pc game
@@venomtang I own it on PC via steam already... lol
Then go play it! Now! Lol
@@mackieken I'm saying you're not special, anyone can buy the game online
If there is a series that I associate with my whole gaming life (which at this point spans five decades, geez) that's the Outrun series. It has always been there. I even like the entries nobody cares about (Turbo Outrun, Outrun Europa - don't judge me lol). I'm glad I can still play OutRun 2 at my local arcade, until it lasts. Sure a third OutRun would be nice but is SEGA that company anymore? By the way Kudos to Sumo Digital for the incredible home ports of OutRun 2. I was surprised to find out they were not an internal SEGA team but a UK third party developer. Thankfully the days of shoddy ports by U.S. Gold are long gone!
OutRun has been going strong for forever but Sega needs to bring it back. OutRun 3 when??
My copy on Xbox was a hand down and was terribly scratched, it added an extra layer of tenseness to the game. Will the next level load in time before I get there? Who knows!?
Haha the stakes are higher!
If sega tease outrun 3
We can only dream
Call me old fashion but I actually like the og 1986 outrun more than 2 but 2 is fun though
That’s fair. It is an awesome game after all
Any good spiritual successor to Out Run 2? Drifting in this game is so satisfying.
Ive never found one but maybe I missed it?
Hot shot racing it's by sumo who did this conversion. The other games by sumo are good too (sonic kart racers).
@@JR-mr1tw Didnt realize that I actually bought Hotshot racing after hearing the same thing :). Backlog is too much. Need to actually install it and check it out.
Sumo makes some awesome racing games
Haha this is a very real plight we all deal with
The REAL question for me is:
SCUD Race vs Daytona 2
But yeah, I’ll forever represent SCUD Race.
Do you have a SCUD or Daytona 2 board?
I have a Daytona 2
The crème de la crème
Top of the heap
