    *PART 2 OF THIS VIDEO HERE:* ruclips.net/video/EJTPe7aBxz4/видео.html I made a follow-on to this video, as several fairly big things happened in the world of Outrun 2 in the 8 or so months after I'd uploaded it. There were also a few little additions I wanted to make to the Outrun 30th Anniversary video I made back in 2016, so thought I might as well add those in too.
    Also, I managed to get involved in some online multiplayer on the PS3 game a few weeks ago, check out one of the races here:

      I got asked on a non-English speaking form if I could recap the pros and cons of each version in text form. I thought I might as well add what I wrote there to the comments here as well:
      With the exception of the PSP all versions of the game ran at 60fps
      -Xbox Outrun 2: Arguably the best looking 6th Generation console version of the game; can display in 480p anamorphic widescreen and upscales nicely into 720p when played on an Xbox 360 (although does suffer from some occasional frame rate judder and sometimes problems when transitioning from one course to another on 360). Contained the original 15 OR2 tracks and 12 cars (4 more than the arcade Chihiro game) and lots of original mission modes and challenges. It also contained two bonus courses that weren't subsequently included in Coast 2 Coast or Outrun Online Arcade, made up of tracks from the old Sega arcade racers Scud Race and Daytona USA 2. The Japanese Xbox version of the original Outrun 2 had some cosmetic and minor gameplay changes made to the bonus stages to make them look and play more accurately to the Scud Race and Daytona 2 arcade games, so the Japanese version is arguably the best version of Outrun 2. There's no force feedback ability if you're using a wheel, but outstanding controls with an Xbox Joypad, with incredibly intuitive rumble that lets you feel all the gear changes and bumps in the road. Easy to use system link (for I think a maximum of 6 players?) if you've got multiple Xboxs with a good stable game connection throughout. To me, feels like the hardest version of the game. The hard level cars actually feel hard to control, especially with manual transmission. Also contained a bonus unlockable version of the original 1986 Outrun.
      -Coast 2 Coast on consoles: Although C2C didn't include the bonus stages from Outrun 2, it did include all 15 stages from the original arcade version of Outrun 2 and the 15 new stages from Outrun 2 SP. It also included extra cars (bringing the total up to 15) and special souped up versions of all the regular cars. Whereas the original Outrun 2 had been an Xbox exclusive, the home ports of Outrun 2 SP were multi-system, with the original Xbox, PS2, PSP (and later PC) receiving a version of the game. Allegedly, this lead to a slight reduction in the quality of the graphics on the Xbox port, as the game was developed as a multi-platform title that had to account for the PS2 and PSP which weren’t as graphically powerful as the Xbox. I was always under the impression though that the slight quality drop was due to the fact that Coast 2 Coast just contained so much more content than the original Outrun 2, so some compromises had to be made. It's not super noticeable, but the anti-aliasing on the cars seems a tiny bit more jaggy and the draw distance on the road markings isn't quite so good. Not sure about the PSP, but both OG Xbox and PS2 support widescreen 480p with the OG Xbox version being once again backwards compatible with 360, and unlike the original OR2, running with no glitches that I could notice and looking nice upscaled to 720p. Original Xbox is the best looking console version with PS2 coming 2nd and PSP 3rd. The Japanese version of C2C on the PS2 had it's name changed back to Outrun 2 SP and had some end of stage animations from the arcade version of OR2SP added back in that are missing from all the other home versions and also some extra music too. It's also the only version of C2C that has working force feedback for steering wheels. I can't comment on the control on the 2 PlayStation games, but with a pad, Coast 2 Coast handles just as well as Outrun 2. The Xbox system link option is as equally easy to set-up as OR2 and offers an equally good stable connection. The game also had a load of challenge and mission modes, with the nice touch that some of them would feature courses that would mix and match stages from both SP and OR2. Coast 2 Coast also added in the ability to slipstream the CPU traffic and rivals and featured some new animations in the bunki sections of the game (where you transition from one stage to the next) that would differ depending on how well you did in the stage. Arguably easier than OR2. Collisions are punished far more severely in Outrun 2, with the player losing a lot of speed if you drift into traffic or a CPU opponent. Coast 2 Coast by comparison seems to allow you to pretty much plough through other cars, trucks and buses with only minimal speed loss. Hard level cars feel a fair bit easier to control in this version too. It also adds in a Marathon mode allowing you to race all 15 SP or OR2 tracks back-to-back. Also features a special dusk mode for the first Palm Beach course from OR2 and a night mode for the Sunny Beach stage from OR2SP when played in Time Attack.
      -Coast 2 Coast on PC: Contains all the content of the console versions. The first true HD version of the game, supporting resolutions up to 1080p, however it didn’t include any bloom effects (the optical effect where light from a bright source, such as a the Sun, appears to leak into surrounding objects) The PC version of Coast 2 Coast featured no rumble functionality whatsoever for joypads and was not optimised for racing wheels. You could plug your wheel in and use it, but the game would treat it the same as a joypad, meaning there was a massive deadzone on the wheel’s X axis. You can set-up a wireless LAN using the PC version of C2C very easily, but the connection is very temperamental and prone to failing. The in game timers will get out of sync, cars will warp all over the screen, PCs will totally de-sync. Members of the gaming community were able to help fix these shortcomings though. The OR2 FXT hack (created by Howard Casto) added rumble for joypads, corrected the deadzone in racing wheels and also added force feedback to the game. The hack also allows you to swap out music in the game and change the appearance of parts of the in game menus to appear more arcade like as well as lots of other stuff. Sometime after this it was discovered that the bloom effects actually were in the PC version of Outrun Coast 2 Coast, but were contained in an incorrect folder when the game installed. By simply cutting and pasting a file called lens flare offset.bin from the game’s media folder into the games common folder, it enabled the effects! With all these fixes added to the game it is now arguably the best version of Coast 2 Coast.
      -Outrun Online Arcade (PS3 & Xbox 360): A digital only version of the game that contained only the 15 SP tracks, as well as a reduction in the number of cars back to 10 and a reduced selection of tunes. Displays in 720p HD, but looks significantly better than the PC version as it has superior bloom effects (it looks way better, even with the bloom effects in the correct folder and working on the PC). The bloom here looks a lot nicer than the Xbox versions of OR2 and Coast 2 Coast as well (It's been mentioned to me that the Xbox version of Coast also has issues with it's bloom - the sun is completely missing in the OG Xbox version for the OutRun 2 SP courses, most notably, in the opening Sunny Beach stage the Sun is suppose to be visible and shining when you climb the first hill). Despite being a highly stripped down version of Coast 2 Coast the game did feature the end of course animations that were missing in all the other versions of Coast 2 Coast, apart from the Japanese PS2, and it also featured force feedback for racing wheels too. It also lets you play the Heart attack mission modes and features the 15 stage Marathon mode. I've never played the 360 version, but playing on a PS3 with a pad, the rumble functions are extremely week, to the point I can barely feel it do anything with the settings at maximum (also I hate playing racing games using the R2 and L2 triggers on a Dualshock 3 pad, your fingers constantly feel like they want to slip off them). Despite the lack of rumble, the game handles really well and has the easier handling of C2C rather than OR2. Was playable online back in the day, but no local system link options. Has been de-listed now, so you can no longer purchase it from PSN or XBLA.
      -Outrun 2 SPDX (Teknoparrot): The actual arcade version of Outrun 2 SP DX hacked to run on Windows 10 PCs. I own Windows 7 so haven't been able to play it (boo!) but from what I see it's just as nice looking as Outrun Online Arcade (in terms of bloom) and it's got ALL 15 OR2 and SP stages in and you can play it in resolutions up to 4K. Also supports FFB and network play. Doesn't feature all the content from Coast 2 Coast, with some cars missing and none of the challenge modes. The graphics can apparently be problematic when played in Tekknoparrot without certain downloadable fixes.

      Two things of note. The testerossa in Outrun 2 arcade has a different appearance (Big grill look). This look made it onto the Xbox Outrun demo on the computer controlled cars but the car you select (and in all versions after) was the one we all recall seeing.
      Also, PS2 port of OOA was obviously graphically weaker but an AMAZING achievement. Same with PSP (the devs intentionally sacrificed speed for looks). Also, the jPS2 Outrun 2SP features arcade-accurate scoring for Outrun mode (2006 for some reason halved the points for traffic you passed)

    Use the name ENTIRETY as a license name but cancel and you will have everything unlock with no linking on the PS2 and PSP versions. This game is a blast on PS2 and looks pretty impressive for a game on a 6 year old system at the time in my opinion.

      Fun fact: The Drifting, Avoid Crashing Into Stuff, Cut Through Lines and Collecting Stuff missions were reused in Sonic Sega All Stars Racing, Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed and Team Sonic Racing. but changed up for the unique mission like avoid breaking pots as Big in SASASR, drift on areas in various levels in SAASRT and go between robots in TSR. It's Interesting to see Sega and Sumo Digital's first team up before Sonic's true racing games.

    I can confirm that Teknoparrot fixed the shadow and sun issues like two days ago and also audio issues with Lindbergh have been addressed as well. Both this game and Virtua Fighter 5 are both playable properly now. Still need Windows 10 however. The devs did mention too that they plan to incorporate TP Online for OutRun 2 SDX which will mean that you can play the game online via steam. Just like Initial D and Mario Kart Arcade GP DX

    This video doesn't cover one of the most important differences to me, the *audio.* The PC version has distractingly bad sound balance, with some sounds like the engine being half as loud as they should be, and other sounds like the "whoosh" from passing cars being way too loud. It sounds like a nitpick, but it makes it very difficult for me to play that version because of how i work.
    The English release of Coast 2 Coast has a lot of problems with music looping, with all the Genesis music fading out and restarting even in a normal 5-track race. The JP version adds full looping to those as well as the 7 normal OR2 songs, so they're seamless even in 15-track continuous. This is another thing that's really important to me, since 15-track is the best mode, and nothing ruins the groove like a fadeout into 10 seconds of silence twice per race. (I'm not sure if the PC version has looped music or not, the other thing bugged me too much for me to check...)
    My personal opinion after trying them all is *the JP PS2 version (OutRun 2 SP) is the best one,* since it has the bonus songs, the best audio, the ending animations, and all the C2C content. Running it on emulator lets you play it in HD, which isn't quite as nice as the actual HD versions but it looks good enough to me! It supports force feedback wheels too on PS2, though i dunno if that works in an emulator (i don't have one to try it on). Also important... *it just works*, unlike the endless tweaking you need to do on PC/Teknoparrot. The only thing i feel like i'm missing is that awesome route editor on PC, but oh well!

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing  Год назад

      Hmmmm, that's interesting, I've never noticed any massive differences in the audio between the PC and console versions. The main thing I noticed was the SFX being a bit too quiet in the PC game, but that was something you could adjust in game. The cars have never sounded too loud to me with the overtaking noises, I wonder if it could be a difference in your PC audio setup to mine? Over the years I stopped listening to anything except the 3 OG Outrun tunes, so the issues with the other ones looping isn't something I was especially aware of. I agree about the _just works_ thing, that's definitely a massive plus point in a game's favour 👍

      I had a similar experience here in the Philippines. The machine was located at an arcade which was inside a resort and casino. The Outrun 2019 machine was featured prominently in an ad located inside the casino. Great watch! I fell down this rabbit hole recently after getting a Sony PVM monitor and an Xbox RGB cable to see the Xbox version of 2 running at its best. After spending a week trying to get both an actual copy and then (out of frustration) a "totally legal" copy of the PC version of C2C to work on Windows 10 to mixed results and / failure, I bit the bullet and snagged one of the pricy Xbox copies of C2C (it was CeX and yes there was a PS2 copy for £8 a few shelves down!) but it's a great instance of a rare game being worth the price if you actually want to play it. Plus, having the luxury of playing it on a 360 both on the PVM and a modern display has been great and I can't put it down. I generally only play with a pad so I was happy to settle with Xbox C2C. That said, I will say it's probably worth noting that the PC version of C2C, when I did get it to run, works great with BetterJoyForCemu and I was able to use a Switch Pro Controller with the same layout as a Xbox 360 controller which was a great fit.

    I honestly dont think you can go wrong with any version of Outrun2/2006. The best looking versions is the Arcade on TeknoParrot, and the emulated version of online Arcade on RPCS3, both run flawless as well at 60 fps and no frame rate issues. The emulated PS2 version is interesting because that has plenty of content and has lan support, the JP version took out the online/lan support, but you get 4 extra songs.

    Also worth noting that playing 2006 on a 360 has some unusual bugs, the two I've noticed are very long loading screens for the first time you start a "match" (not nearly as long in subsequent matches), and an issue where looping sound effects, like engine noises and tire screeches will sometimes persist and the only way to stop it is by restarting the entire game

    • @MrThunderwing

    You can improve the graphical quality of the PC version, and get it looking like PS3 arcade version, by using a specially tweaked Reshade preset for this game only. You can add better bloom, increase sunlight and darken the shadows by using a trick in Reshade, and even slightly increase the vibrance - giving it a less washed out look. Reshade also has some advanced sharpening shaders which, if used sparingly, can enhance details without introducing shimmer - it makes the look amazing at anything from 1440p and above.

    I've also played all versions and have to say that the original arcade version, which was released again in 2006 as an 1080P upgrade version (SPDX), is the best, at least graphically (track lighting). At home you can only get it through emulation. Then you can also change the resolution (up to 4K) with the appropriate EXEs. In the meantime an annoying lighting bug has been fixed, only some little sound glitches are sometimes noticable. Now the emulated version is nearly the perfect one! If you also have a racing cockpit at home, everything in the arcade version can be operated with the steering wheel, just like in the arcade. Unfortunately, the topic of emulation is in a gray area, which is why it can rarely be given space here..

    Despite you didn’t cover the PS2 and PSP versions, I wanted to tell you this. I was playing Outrun 2006 in my PSP, normally, it was playing at 30FPS with little slowdowns of 20FPS, I remember finishing the Big Forest stage from SP, when the stage transition was in progress, my game started running at 60FPS locked! I was clearly a bug, because of the stage transitions being very unstable and didn’t load the stages immediately, surprisingly, I finished the last 2 stages with 60FPS, after finishing, the game was normally running at 30FPS with the slowdowns, but this proves that the PSP version can be played in 60FPS locked.

    The Xbox version of C2C probably received slightly less visual touching up because it was a multi-platform game as you said. Memory wouldn’t be the issue, as only one course is actively loaded in memory at a time and remains on the disc otherwise, so in game there’s no difference really.
    In fact, it’s worth noting that the PS2 version of OutRun 2 SP actually added antialiasing, possibly only because it was getting some individual treatment from Sega. The original PS2 C2C looks pretty rough since the PS2’s output was often overly sharp anyway, but the option for 480p was good.
    The PSP version is interesting because it’s very faithful, but it feels quite jarring to play - the game tends to run at 20FPS unless you’ve forced the game to run at a higher CPU speed using a hacked system. It also has a 16:9 HUD, because the PSP’s display is 16:9 - unlike any other version of the game before Online Arcade! Which would make it the only 6th gen version to have a 16:9 HUD, I believe. Not going to change its visual downgrades and frame rate, but nice to have.

    I played the PSP port of the game on emulator with a frame count display and realised the game mostly does run at 60 FPS, but there are frame drops in some sections of the tracks, most notably in the two beginning tracks, very close to the start, the game is at 30 FPS but it soon corrects to 60. I believe PPSSPP is accurate to the behaviour of the PSP.

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing  5 лет назад

      Apparently PPSSP can give PSP games a bit of a frame rate boost. Natively I believe the game is still 30fps. www.rllmukforum.com/index.php?/topic/106773-outrun-2006-coast-2-coast/page/72/

    • @themriron2391
      @themriron2391 5 лет назад +1

      The game runs at a pretty consistent 30FPS on a PSP, sometimes running at 60FPS during transitions (the game’s frame rate cap changes to 15, 20, 30 or 60FPS at any given time based on which of those frame rates it can hold best) - assuming you have forced 333MHz. This will drain more battery, though, and at the default 222MHz the game was designed for, the game typically runs at 20FPS.
      I have some experience with PSP and PPSSPP, and even had instances where I’m working on a programming project and PPSSPP makes the game run noticeably better than real hardware - or even runs a program that crashes on real hardware (or vice versa)! So no, it’s not a very good indicator of performance.

    You forgot to mention that, on the og xbox version of Outrun 2 (and I recall 2066 ctc too) you had to have a modded console then either patch the iso file with a "flicker fucker" software or deactivate it from the settings menu on the xbmc to get rid of the blurryness, the result is a much more sharper image quality.

    • @MrThunderwing
      @MrThunderwing  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, not so much 'forgot to mention' more I've never, ever heard of "flicker fucker" before or ever seen anyone mention it in conjunction with Outrun 2. I did a little search on Google to find out more and the only reference to Outrun 2006 I could find was from one person who said '...the graphics become incredibly sharp, but to my mind it looks a bit nicer in blur-o-vision.' and someone else who said 'With the flicker filter turned off everything (as JP said) looks like early PS2 games, with massive jaggies and (most importantly) eye-destroying flickering. Sure, the image is sharp, but so is a dirty knife, and you wouldn't stab that into your eye.'

    Thanks for this video. As a big Outrun 2 fan, I've watched it several times. (It would benefit from text on screen letting us know which screenshot is which version).
    The Teknoparrot version needs a 'FFB plugin' to allow force feedback to work. Then it's great. I've found the FXT hack on the C2C PC version really difficult to get working consistently on my PC, for reasons too complicated to fathom.
    I'm lucky enough to live near an arcade that still has 2 (of its original 4) Outrun 2 cabs running. The screens are burning out, though. I'd love to bring them home with me one day and set them up in the bedroom. But I don't think my wife would approve ! :-)

    I must admit, even today, Online arcade is very pleasant to play in RPCS3 at 4K (and yes the original game is still owned on my PS3, no pirating here).
    It's the highest def version you can currently play. I will always have my biggest soft spot for OG Xbox version(s) of Outrun 2, but they don't emulate well at all and although I still have the original discs, complete in box with manual, I don't have a working Xbox nor even a TV slot for one. No room. Can't even use my 360 and PS3 anymore, I have precisely room for two things and both vertically placed - my PS5 and Series X. Just!
    I now have a very powerful laptop as my all in one everything PC, (13980HX/4090/64GB ram) and Outrun 2 STILL doesn't emulate properly at anything more than 2x resolution. If that.
    And as you can imagine it looks dreadful at 1x res on a modern mini LED 4K panel.
    Still, I have ripped all of my 251 OG Xbox games and about half work OK ish in Xemu, and I'll keep testing them every week. If Xemu added GPU acceleration it would be as fast as CXBX but with actual decent compatibility. I really hope he does this some day. Then Outrun 2 in 4K would be possible without a sweat.
