I have been teasing this series for a very long time...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a twenty episode retrospective on every Sega developed arcade racing game in 3D! Because whether its retro gaming or modern pc gaming...Sega is the KING of the arcade racing genre! So buckle up and get ready for a retrogaming ride!
THE RULES FOR INCLUSION: 1) It must have had an arcade release (So no Sega GT) 2) It must be in 3D (Bye Bye Outrunners, etc etc) and 3) you MUST be racing against an opponent and not just a timer (sorry Crazy Taxi, Wild Riders)
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,

Up next: Daytona USA on the Sega Model 2! The original arcade racing game that started a franchise and still one of the most beloved Sega arcade retro gaming experiences of all time! I can't think of a single issue I have with Daytona USA and I love the Sega Model 2 arcade hardware look and vibe! Sure there are newer versions (on Xbox 360 and arcade with Sega Racing Classic which you can run on computers...making it PC gaming lol) but I just love the original from a video game history and nostalgia perspective.
And this would lead directly to Daytona USA 2 and Scud Race...and that's never a bad thing!
I recently added an original arcade PCB to my collection but have not yet modded in controls. You can emulate this on the Model 2 emulator!

What Sega means to me? Thats a loaded question lol. Sega to me since the age of 9 meant a portal into games that were made by some of the most inventive game designers who made games that were wonderfully and unapologetically Japanese with no care to emulate western game design philosophies and methods married to some of the outright worst business decision makers possible in any industry. It's impossible for me to point to one game because they are so amazing but I would say that Virtua Fighter started EVERYTHING. Tekken, Soul Caliber, Dead or Alive, Criticom all copied Sega. If competing racing games didn't copy Outrun they copied Daytona USA. If you go way back to 1982 they blew minds with Zaxxon. I couldn't point to a single game!

Love Love LOVE this game. The first time I played it and rounding the corner in seaside street galaxy and seeing the shuttle on the launch pad and then rounding a couple other corners and seeing the big sailing ship... just awe inspiring. I recently played the sega racing classic reboot of this and they actually made the shuttle launch... so cool.

Great video! Sega for me represents some of my very best memories in gaming. Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter 2 in particular were amazing arcade experiences the first time I saw and played them, they were just stunning and still look great to this day. But there are so many great arcade memories: Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop (the large rear-projection version), OutRun, After Burner, Buck Rogers, Altered Beast, Super Thunderblade, Indy 500, Super GT (Scud Race), LA Machine Guns, NY Gunblade (the arcade versions were so cool to play), Star Wars Arcade, House of the Dead series, Virtua Tennis, Sega ArcadeWorks (or whatever their Arcade center was called, I remember the one in Orange County and Las Vegas?). The consoles, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast. I really miss peak Sega, and wish they'd re-release more of their classic games to modern consoles (OutRunners, Daytona 2, etc). Just way too much to mention in a single YT comment!

Yesss! I love love love Daytona USA! Easily one of my favorite racing games of all time. I play the version on my Xbox Series X all the time. I will never forget the first time I saw this game in an arcade in the mid 90s. No other game in my entire life blew my mind that much with its visuals. It cannot be understated just how massive a leap forward for game visuals this was. The 60fps with these kind of visuals was just straight up mind blowing at the time.

I adored Sega as a kid. My brother insisted we get a Saturn because of Sega Rally Championship, and we stuck around right til the end of the Dreamcast. I also spent days and days playing the Saturn port of Daytona, and it really did play great and we didn't really care about missing features, frame rate or draw-in as much as people make a fuss about it nowadays. Especially in the late 90s every Sega arcade game was an absolute banger, and I feel like that golden age started with Daytona.

I remember when John from Digital foundry covered this game years ago, and he talked about this being one of the earlier games that highlighted the importance of 60fps gameplay. And he wasn’t wrong.
I remember the first time seeing Daytona in the arcade, and it just blew me away with how good it looked, and how smooth it played. This being before I even knew what frame rate was.
It’s not a controversial opinion to call this one of, if not the greatest arcade racer of all time.
    It’s a fact.

Sega has been best friends with my brain ever since I was a tiny 5-year-old child jamming on the cabinet seat to the Daytona 2 attract music in Myrtle Beach. I've always been multi-console at heart but when it comes to SEGA I mostly think of games that have lasted me an entire lifetime of skills and technical/electrical knowledge. Lots of stress and sad times, yet lots of happiness. So much research. LOADS of information gathered. Hours of digging the Internet for documentation about every game.
My dad used to drive me around and travel up to 2 and a half hours to a big city (Atlanta, Columbia, or Charlotte) to find a specific place that had House of the Dead 1 or Harley-Davidson -- the former of which is far easier to find and can still be found in arcade bars, likewise with this game. Daytona was rightfully everywhere and still kind of is! As fun as it is, it was also problematic to maintain since the game had force feedback motors, no calibration menu -- you had to manually adjust the potentiometers on the cabinet yourself. The gear shifter had so much wear that most of the time you wouldn't be able to shift to 1st gear possibly due to a loose switch. Fortunately this is where emulation comes in handy, and it's something to be thankful for with talented developers allowing us to enjoy arcade-perfect versions of these on our home computers. Still hope to find the first Model 2 board for a reasonable price, but they cost a lot due to shipping the cage!

Well done and great video! My personal favorite version of Daytona is the PS3 /XBOX 360...HD, widescreen and the gameplay is identical to the arcades. When I think of sega I think of Outrun, Afterburner and Galaxy Force...the arcade cabinets of those when I was a kid were unbelievable.
Speaking of Outrun, are you planning to do a video on any of the Outrun 2 versions? ...the PS3 version of that is excellent as well.

For me SEGA is Mega Drive, Sonic 3&K, Shining Force II, PSIV.
The Trick in Daytona USA to be able to win races is to learn to downshift on curves to drift, that is the way this game works, so you have to play on manual.

Aside from remembering playing Daytona USA 2 at CineStar in Dortmund when it used to be there in my mid-teens in the early 2000s, I never saw the original game at any arcade that I went to despite being dirt-common, and even stll haven't yet seen the original machine to this day. Granted, I first knew about the Daytona USA name from the official Sega website in 2001 when I wanted to get a Dreamcast for Sonic Adventure 2, and the first time I played a Daytona USA was Daytona USA Deluxe on the PC which I first played in ca. 2003 at my dad's house in Castrop-Rauxel when he had it installed on his computer. That was my very first proper exposure to Daytona USA before playing the PC port of the original a year or so later when I found it somewhere on an abandonware site.

Sega means so much to me. I'm 41 now, I had an NES when I was 5, and I liked it, enjoyed Mario etc... but I got a Sega Genesis for Christmas of 1989. My Dad put it on me to choose if I wanted a Genesis or a TurboGrafx 16. So I got some gaming mags and read them cover to cover. I got to try a Sega Genesis at Family Toy Warehouse. Had Altered Beast running on it. Played it for bout 1 minute and was sold. NES introduced me to games, but Sega ignited a life long passion for me. Sonic the Hedgehog, Herzog Zwei, Ranger X, Rocket Knight Adventures, then I got the Sega CD and my love for Sega took off even more with stuff like Sonic CD, Snatcher, The Terminator etc...
Then I moved onto the 3DO and loved that too, it was weird to move away from Sega though. Then I moved onto Playstation. Loved it too. Then I had a job, could buy my own games, and I'll never forget playing a demo Dreamcast unit. Playing Sonic Adventure and chased by that whale on the bridge...It was like I was 7 years old again when I first played a Sega Genesis. Got my DC at launch an my love for Sega was reignited. Loved my DC until the bitter end. Then I went back and picked up a Saturn and enjoy it very much.
To me Sega is dead today, that magic is just gone. To me it's just some other company using the name now. Anytime I play any of my Sega consoles though, that magical feeling always hits me, and I love every second of it. That's what Sega means to me. Not just any game in particular, but an entire experience that ignited a life long passion and hobby.

The Sega of Megadrive (yeah sorry we don't say Genesis here :p) ?
The Sega of the arcades and 3D pioneering with Virtua Racer, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop (that 3 hour documentary on RUclips, such a good one !)
The modern Sega doing some of its best work for Nintendo ? (Bayonetta or F-Zero GX, still the best F-Zero ever and one of the best games of all time in my humble opinion)
The Sega of Yakuza which I just adore ?
Or the weird Sega of Saturn and Dreamcast with Seaman or Segagaga and projects like these ?

Shenmue. It was an amazing game and it was a tragedy the series never continued on Dreamcast (with that style of graphics). By the time it reappeared, all momentum had been lost and none of the charm of the old games was retained. A Master System was my first console but I really had no say in it and I wanted a NES. The NES games were 50% more expensive in the UK so it wasn't going to happen. When I think of Sega, I think of Yu Suzuki sleeping in the Sega building in Japan.

I played the two games back to back in late 2001/early 2002. I had never previously enjoyed an RPG so I was a bit wary of it. But, seeing the screenshots and the unprecedented detail like shops opening and closing at certain times was impossible to ignore. It seemed fascinating so I bought both games and they were amazing.
It's unfortunate a lot of people who don't appreciate it gave it mediocre reviews. I see that a lot. The geniuses in Japan make something and the western reviewers (who don't deserve it) just debase the games. My all-time favourite game, Ridge Racer 7, for PS3, got 7 out of 10 on IGN. Then, there's Project Overkill for PS1 which wasn't appreciated.

Model 2 was a beast. Sure Model 3 was really awesome too, but 2 just was what Model 1 was supposed to be. Textured polygons and more and released in a time (1993!!) when Sony's Playstation was condiered "Arcade" for many 3D games. Seriously.
I don't know if I can answer what "SEGA Means for me" because it would be too much Fanboy. Having to defend a console nobody had, in a country were it was otherwise all Nintendo and Sony... and my first console bought with my own money being a Dreamcast. Knowing SEGA was better due to "all those awesome Arcade games that Sony and Nintendo simply couldn't match!".
I mean FFS man, this was basically flight simulator hardware that they put in the Arcades LOL, Hardware that cost multiple millions of dollars, scaled back enough so Arcades could afford it.... but by far not all even. It was "Ultimate SEGA!" To a point where they, as per SEGA tradition, even used the last gen's console's CPU for the sound hardware (MC68000 on the Model 2 handles the sound lol :) ).

Love this game but I can think of a couple of critcisms. Rubberbanding is a little on the extreme side, fine for single player and casual players but multiplayer with experienced players tends to devolve into a game of who can abuse it most effectively. Still good fun but it would be nice if it was optional since it renders longer races a little pointless.
Also it would be nice if the tyre wear in Type B games was a little less exaggerated. Iirc they last about 2 minutes before it feels like you're driving on ice and have to make a pit stop. It's a nice idea but not really fun to play imo.
On another note I do remember seeing a cabinet set to endurance mode out in the wild as a kid, it was a single player cabinet in the lobby of a cinema of all places. I can imagine a fair few people would have hopped on it thinking they might kill a couple of minutes only to have to abandon the game halfway through lol.
