Hi Everyone- After over a year of answering amazing questions and receiving incredible support, I really need to address the most re-occurring question. CAN I USE AN INKJET PRINTER? The answer is always going to be NOOOOO! I don't say that in a bratty way, just in the most clear way possible. The way an laser handles ink vs. an inkjet is why this technique works. I've personally troubleshot behind the scenes and every single time it has been the printer! Some people don't know the difference between inkjet and laser and that causes confusion. Please know what kind of printer you have because that will make all the difference. If you don't know what type of printer you have google the make and model number of your printer and ask the question "is my (insert make and model of printer) an inkjet or laser printer. The answer will usually come up. Also Laser printers have big distinct ink trays and a drum...if you don't have that you probably don't have a laser. There's a lot of great content in the comment section from people who have added to this discussion. This is an amazing way to transfer but certainly if you are using air dry clay or have an inkjet it's not for you. BUT having said that, there are videos for transfers using both, so even if you just get inspired to make the project, don't fret, you can still make it, just find the best way to transfer the image for your printer or your clay. Thanks for your comments, participation and support. This class has been so wonderful to share with all of you. xo- Michelle
I have learned so much from you! Your a fabulous teacher. I can watch your videos for hours with new ideas. I’m new to Polymer Clay with absolutely NO knowledge of what to do with it. You have opened a whole new past time and craft for me. Thank you 😊
I'm glad you found that valuable. There are some good videos on RUclips all about other locations on line, we have a vast wealth of art out there for us to use as inspiration if we only know how to find it. All my best to you.
There is now a new Photo Transfer Video Class for making Holiday Ornaments & Tags out of this technique and it comes with a FREE download of Images. I hope you will all come and check it out! ruclips.net/video/zhkWk0DsTWE/видео.html
Questions 1- why don't you remove the paper before you cut shapes? 2- why don't you start on the tile so you don't have to pick up to move after cutting? 3- can't you wet the paper on the back once down, wait a couple minutes and lightly press or roll to do the transfer instead of tapping for so long? (seems to distort)
@@jannettestetson-buck5103 Thanks for the questions... I'll try to answer the best I can. 1. Sometimes I do remove the paper first, sometimes I don't, in this case I'm filming a video and to wait until each was dry to cut the shapes wasn't going to work for an effective video. Keep in mind that techniques are often rushed when filming . 2. Again it was because of filming. Often I work on one large tile and then put the whole tile into the oven and I never have to move them. Sometimes I use small tiles and work on them one by one putting them in the oven on the same tile as I go. When I film it's not always exactly how I would do it myself, I have to adjust for the camera space and for time...and sometimes I'm just distracted from exactly what I'm doing because I'm trying to think of too many things at once. LOL. I don't make videos as a profession and they are in my spare time so I don't always do everything perfect but I try to convey as much information as I can accurately. 3. Believe it or not the tapping reduces distortion, while rolling and rubbing tend to smudge the image. This is an important detail....the clarity of the image transferred has everything to do with your printer's ability to create a clean image on paper AND the contrast and clarity of the image itself. High contrast images with crisp edges tend to transfer easier. This technique will vary depending on what printer you have and what images you use. My printer is going on 7 years old and some images it just can't reproduce as well as others. It's all playing around with your own equipment but the technique doesn't change. Good luck and I hope this helps.
this is super excellent cool. I bought a bunch of clay with the intent to sculpt things but... Turns out I'm not so great at that. Finally my clay can see some use~~.

Love this tutorial! Can I use an ink jet printer, and I noticed that you didn't varnish over the gilded edge, how will that hold up to weather? Thanks for the tips!!
I don't use these outside but if I did, YES I would varnish all of it. This technique is not for an ink jet, however there are channels that show inkjet methods, so you could apply their methods and this project idea.
Terri, I too enjoy the look of things that are slightly tattered. It gives them personality and most handmade items are not perfect in nature because they are handmade, so I agree 100%!
This is an adorable project. Could you leave the paper on while it bakes? I wondered if it would make it easier to rub off the paper without distorting the clay. Thank you!
I had the same thought. Polymer clay bakes at a temperature so low that the paper would not combust, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. You could also rinse off the whole thing in the sink after it's cooled, too.
Hello ladies and thanks for the discussion on this point. There is no "right" way to do anything in art so I love chatting about other options. YES you can leave it on... so why did I choose to take it off? Really it's a personal preference. I've found in the past that it is extremely difficult to remove all the paper once it is baked on. There is a fine residue that sometimes just won't come off. Now having said that, image transfers of all types have been around forever and once you see the "trick" to how they are done you can play around and figure out what works best for you and the materials you have on hand. It's all about experimenting and finding a process that nets the same result most of the time. For me removing the paper works better, but if baking it on works better for you I say GO FOR IT! I will say that there is always a pro/con to everything, I think by baking with the paper on there is less risk of rubbing off the image, but the residue left behind can also cloud some of the details if you can't get it off. Thanks for this point, I think it's valuable to anyone trying this technique.
I don't work with air dry clay so I don't have this answer... but I believe there are videos on youtube about this. I believe there is a technique, so with that said once you find a way to do it you can still use the project idea. Thanks for watching!
OMG this is fantastic. I like the images thank you for the tutorial. I need your help .can you tell me please what paper and what printer can I use. For long time now I try to transfer on clay and the result is very bad. I try laser printer and many other techniques. You did this amazing work only with water. Thank you for your time.good job.
This technique is to be used with regular printer paper ( I used very basic, cheap paper) on a LASER printer printouts. What clay are you using? Polymer clay works here because of the chemical reaction between the polymer and the ink. Thanks for watching and I hope you can find a way that works great for you.
You’ll have to search RUclips for an inkjet printer technique... This is for laser only and I don’t know if it will work. Inkjet will work on paper clay from what o understand but I’ve never tried it.
I'm sorry for my delayed response. I have a Brother Laser printer that I bought probably 8 years ago on Black Friday for a few hundred dollars. It's a workhorse and still going strong. I find it to be reliable and I can get off market laser cartridges and I can't believe how cost effective it has been.
Hi I am specifically looking for those mushroom images you were using. Can you let me know exactly from that site you referenced where to find from what book? I checkied out the Biodiversity Heritage site but find it difficult to actually see any images there without blindly downloading a book. Can you help me find images like yours more easily? I do not see pics on that website. I searched the keyword "mushroom" and it only shows a list of books for you to download not knowing of any images associated with these books
Hello. Yes biodiversity can rake time to sift through due images, however I would recommend that if you are willing to spend a few dollars… finding a digital kit on Etsy that is mushroom or woodland themed would save you a lot of time and give you lots of options quickly. If that’s something you are interested in I can list some of my favorite sellers. You can probably find some images for free on the graphics fairy website it has a wonderful free selection.
This is absolutely beautiful and one of my favorite tutorials..can you do one where you show how you shaded the edges of the other ones you made and show? I love the darkened edges..do you just blend in some white and brown or copper paint?!
Thank you Miss Mary. Actually my favorite way to do edges is with Gilding Wax. It comes in a tub and you just rub it on. It comes in all kinds of metallic colors and is so easy to add to raw or baked clay. You can find links to the product I use on my Favorites page in the info. box. Thanks for your kind comment, I'm glad you like this project.
It has to be laser for this technique but there are ways for inkjet to be transferred, the process is differnt. I recommend watching www.youtube.com/@NitsaCreativeStudio for all things image transfer. My expertise is with Polymer... hers is image transfer. Enjoy!
You could use a hair dryer to dry the varnish but NOT to bake the clay, it needs consistent heat for 275 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 20 -30 minutes. The clay needs to be baked in an oven.

@@MichelleRaeLandry thanks so much for your reply! I may try this both ways. Appreciate this video and all the detail so much
So beautiful! I would like to know if it works the same with the air dry clay
@@MichelleRaeLandry thank you very much.you are very kind. I use all brands .
I completely missed which printer ink jet or laser? Have gone back and forth but I must be missing it...Thank you in advance for your help!
Laser printer is a must for this technique. I use a Laser printer on regular printer paper. Thanks for watching!
Excellent work 👍🏻
Thanks a lot 😊

Cheli A E you are most welcome!
Beautiful 🤩 xxx 😽
Thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing this.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
How long do you bake your clay at 1/4” thick?
I’m so sorry for the delayed response. I cook my clay generally for 20- 30 minutes.
Thank you🙏Indeed, they are beautiful
Thank you too! I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Hello thank you for this video it’s very beautiful 😍 my question is can I do the same with air dry clay?
I wish I could give you an answer. I've never used it...however you could adapt this project to any air dry clay technique. Thanks for the question.
I🤩 like your technique too
Thank you! Cheers!
Lovely! Thank you
Thank you!
Beauitful ...
Thanks a lot 😊
This is super cute.Thank you. Can you do this if you don't have access to a laser printer?
You’ll have to search RUclips for an inkjet printer technique... This is for laser only and I don’t know if it will work. Inkjet will work on paper clay from what o understand but I’ve never tried it.
I love love this 💜

And thank you for sharing your talent ❤️💜💜 so beautiful
Thanks for subbing! I so appreciate you watching and commenting. I'll have a new clay project hopefully up in the next week.
great video!! Thank u
Thank you for watching. 😊
Thank you so much for this awesome video. Would you be able to share which laser printer you used? Thanks in advance!
I love these! Is polymer clay heavy..as in will it weigh down a Christmas tree branch do you think ? Ty!
It doesn’t weigh more than other ornaments… definitely do-able.
Wich kind of printer it has to be??? A Laser printer or not?
Nice greetings from Austria!!!!
It has to be laser for this technique but there are ways for inkjet to be transferred, the process is differnt. I recommend watching www.youtube.com/@NitsaCreativeStudio for all things image transfer. My expertise is with Polymer... hers is image transfer. Enjoy!
Nice ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much!
Thank you for sharing your vedio. Can use hair dry to dry it. Thank you
You could use a hair dryer to dry the varnish but NOT to bake the clay, it needs consistent heat for 275 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 20 -30 minutes. The clay needs to be baked in an oven.
@@MichelleRaeLandry thank you so much
I love this! So beautiful! Do you happen to know if it's possible to apply this same concept of transferring images to premo or souffle?
Kristine S of course, both are polymer and would be perfect, just make sure the clay color is light enough to see the image.
wonderful thank you
Thank you too!
This is so cute ☺️ I’m gonna make one for my mom and my gramma 🥰
I hope they love them and you enjoy the process.
These are beautiful! Your art is inspiring. Can you say what is the two edged tool/brush you are using?
Hi Lizzy… here is a link to what they are… amzn.to/3v5WclB . You can search nail art/clay tools and a bunch of choices will come up. Good luck. 🍀
