My two worlds collide in this super fun project using vintage book illustrations and polymer clay! With a minimal amount of supplies (less than $20) and no experience needed, you can make beautiful DIY wall hangings, tags Etc. with professional looking results. It's fun, it's creative and it's addicting. Polymer clay bakes in your own oven or a toaster oven, so it's a project anyone can do at home.
This is typical of the type of class I run at Wild Salamander Arts Center & a perfect project to do while stuck inside during a worldwide pandemic. ;-)
I found the images you see on the Public Domain Website:

*IMPORTANT NOTE:
YOU MUST USE IMAGES PRINTED ON A LASER PRINTER

this is super excellent cool. I bought a bunch of clay with the intent to sculpt things but... Turns out I'm not so great at that. Finally my clay can see some use~~.
Thank you Vervain, I hope it turns out to be a fun project for you. I have another using the same technique to make holiday decorations, if you are looking to make handmade gifts. Be Well and Thanks for watching.
I have learned so much from you! Your a fabulous teacher. I can watch your videos for hours with new ideas. I’m new to Polymer Clay with absolutely NO knowledge of what to do with it. You have opened a whole new past time and craft for me. Thank you 😊
What an incredibly kind comment, that really means so much to me. If I can every answer any polymer clay questions please feel free to reach out!
So pretty and so many different things you can make with this idea.
Thank you! 😊
The info on public domain images was very helpful.
I'm glad you found that valuable. There are some good videos on RUclips all about other locations on line, we have a vast wealth of art out there for us to use as inspiration if we only know how to find it. All my best to you.
Yes to vintage 🤎🧡 new subscriber here. New to polymer clay too!
Hi there! Thanks so much for subscribing and I'm glad you enjoy polymer too! I hope to get a new polymer video up next week.
I use to cut the image and use clear glue glaze , it works pretty well too!!
On air dry clay , all kind of art is beautiful no matter the material, just have fun and you will discover new techniques ❤️❤️
D Maciel THANK YOU for contributing such a valuable idea to this comment thread. I am always getting asked about air dry clay but I don't have any experience with it, and the clear glue glaze is a fabulous contribution to this thread.
Hi Everyone- After over a year of answering amazing questions and receiving incredible support, I really need to address the most re-occurring question. CAN I USE AN INKJET PRINTER? The answer is always going to be NOOOOO! I don't say that in a bratty way, just in the most clear way possible. The way an laser handles ink vs. an inkjet is why this technique works. I've personally troubleshot behind the scenes and every single time it has been the printer! Some people don't know the difference between inkjet and laser and that causes confusion. Please know what kind of printer you have because that will make all the difference. If you don't know what type of printer you have google the make and model number of your printer and ask the question "is my (insert make and model of printer) an inkjet or laser printer. The answer will usually come up. Also Laser printers have big distinct ink trays and a drum...if you don't have that you probably don't have a laser. There's a lot of great content in the comment section from people who have added to this discussion. This is an amazing way to transfer but certainly if you are using air dry clay or have an inkjet it's not for you. BUT having said that, there are videos for transfers using both, so even if you just get inspired to make the project, don't fret, you can still make it, just find the best way to transfer the image for your printer or your clay. Thanks for your comments, participation and support. This class has been so wonderful to share with all of you. xo- Michelle
Great tutorial and project! Helpful info on image transfer to clay! TFS the inspiration and creativity!

I love the dots. I think they’re beautiful.
Thanks so much for the kind comment and for watching.
Wow need to try that someday ❤️but first things first❤️❤️❤️❤️
It is a fun project, but yes... one step at a time. There is no rush to these things, the process of learning to work with clay can be on your timetable. Thanks for watching. xo
Okay Michelle, we need to talk *lol* Actually I am off today and had a lot of houshold tasks planed. Now I have to do polymerclay projects. It´s a matter of suvival.I can´t live without testing this - just kidding - But I will for sure make time later to trey this, thank you so much for sharing this beautiful craft ! I a!bsolutley love it
Jutta Whitley I’d love a chat!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Vintage paper and Clay are right up my alley! I also want to add that I love the authenticity of your video making. The clanging of the cookie cutters and having to leave the room for a cup of water was hilarious! That would totally be me if I made videos. I hope this comment finds you well and that you continue to make these awesome tutorials.
Teresa, I've been away and just catching up on comments. Yours was really such a lovely gift to me. I'm not a professional video creator and my lessons come from my heart, but admittedly I am 100% human, a bit loud and klutzy. I appreciate those who can view my videos with the generosity of spirit that you did. Thank you for watching and for your kindness. I have more clay videos that I plan to make soon.
@@MichelleRaeLandry I'm so happy to hear that my message was uplifting and glad you are well.
This tutorial was verey helpful to me. Thank you for sharing.

THATS SO COOL. THERES SO MANY THINGS I CAN DO WITH THAT AAAAAAAH
There really is a limitless amount of things you can do with Polymer clay and once you understand how to put images and words on it... it's awesome! Remember to always REVERSE any words as they will go on backwards. Thanks for watching!
@@MichelleRaeLandry absolutely! I'm a digital illustrator so this is gonna be so cool to try out with my own art work!
This is cool. Looks kinda like a cookie. I'd probably try to eat it.

Wauwwwww.... So Beautiful 👍🏻👍🏻😉
I LOVE it 😍❤️😍❤️😍❤️😍❤️😍❤️
Thank you! Cheers! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and watch.
I struggled to get past the clattering of the cutters🙉 but I really enjoyed the vid😁. Ive already tried it and have a gorgous butterfly on Fimo. Thanks for sharing🤩 more more more - please!😍
I’m sorry about the clattering... hope your ears recovered. 😉 I’ll try to keep my movements quieter next time, still learning to video and work at the same time.
@@MichelleRaeLandryThat's ok, it was only the cutters :D lol My ears have recovered. Can I please ask - the vintage images you used - are they just normal paper? from a book? I loved the aged look particularly.
@@kimhaughey9161 I printed them normal paper but I downloaded them from a digital kit on Etsy. (LoveJunkJournals). You can however find similar images for FREE on the public domain from NYC library online... it has a FLICKR account. Google Public Domain Source sites and you should be able to find tons of digital images to use.
These turned out so great! I'm thinking they'd make a great gift! 😊
I thought the same thing! You could customize for the person!

I🤩 like your technique too
Thank you! Cheers!
These are beautiful. I'm going to use my print & cut feature on my cricut to save on fussy cutting.
Awesome! I'm so jealous of anyone who doesn't need to fussy cut things. ;-)
@@MichelleRaeLandry I feel ya. I've done fussy cuts in sewing by hand for decades and it's so nice to have something be 'easy' for once!
VERY informative! Thank you for sharing this!🦋

10/10 video. you can def tell you're a teacher, and that you're great at it(:
Wow, thanks for that kind comment. It was one of my first videos so I certainly had some bumps in it but I am trying to put out content that I was teaching in person so your comment means a lot to me.
This is so neat. Thank you for the info on the bio diversity library.
Thanks Kira, I appreciate you watching.
lovely and creative

I really enjoyed watching this video. Creative ideas are endless. Your work is so charming and pretty. I can definitely see that in my garden and everyone asking, "where did you get those?". You have also inspired me to have more fun with clay work. Looking forward to you next videos... xxx
Thanks so much for such a kind comment. I really try to incorporate whimsy and nature in every art form I work in. I recently made a fairy garden video with clay elements, check that out, your garden may thank you. I appreciate the comment and the watch!!!!
Your dog is perfect
This comment makes me giggle. Thanks.
I love this project, there are just endless possibilities. 😍 Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks so much for watching! 😊
I prefer the image of the butterfly with its imperfection. I think it makes it look sort of 'antique', which I like.
Terri, I too enjoy the look of things that are slightly tattered. It gives them personality and most handmade items are not perfect in nature because they are handmade, so I agree 100%!
such a good tutorial. if you do not desire the back of the polymer clay shape, place a pice of an old tshirt on the tile, before placing the polymer shape on it, then bake.
Love them!
Thanks!
Gorgeous, I love it!
Thank you!
hi i´m from portugal, lovely tutorial, thank you for that. love all your work

Super schön!!Vielen Dank für das Video!!🎉❤
Thank you for watching!
A big Wow to this work!
Thank you for the sweet comment!
Love your art!!
Well thanks so much! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
These came out beautifully!! I was worried that the ink was going to rub off when you put them in the water and wipe to dry. ( also noticed at 2:08 the video repeated itself when you mentioned the brush)
But aside from that the inks and print are so pretty! I didn’t think the image could transfer like that. I was so invested in the video I just noticed it’s an hour long, but I did have it sped up. Amazing work! Very crafty!
Thanks for the comment Amanda and for watching. I know it's a bit long...but I figure I'd rather give a full class and people can take what they want from it. Newer videos will have chapter stamps in them to make it easier. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and for your kindness.
This is an adorable project. Could you leave the paper on while it bakes? I wondered if it would make it easier to rub off the paper without distorting the clay. Thank you!
I had the same thought. Polymer clay bakes at a temperature so low that the paper would not combust, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. You could also rinse off the whole thing in the sink after it's cooled, too.
Hello ladies and thanks for the discussion on this point. There is no "right" way to do anything in art so I love chatting about other options. YES you can leave it on... so why did I choose to take it off? Really it's a personal preference. I've found in the past that it is extremely difficult to remove all the paper once it is baked on. There is a fine residue that sometimes just won't come off. Now having said that, image transfers of all types have been around forever and once you see the "trick" to how they are done you can play around and figure out what works best for you and the materials you have on hand. It's all about experimenting and finding a process that nets the same result most of the time. For me removing the paper works better, but if baking it on works better for you I say GO FOR IT! I will say that there is always a pro/con to everything, I think by baking with the paper on there is less risk of rubbing off the image, but the residue left behind can also cloud some of the details if you can't get it off. Thanks for this point, I think it's valuable to anyone trying this technique.
@@MichelleRaeLandry thanks so much for your reply! I may try this both ways. Appreciate this video and all the detail so much
I love the pictures!
Thank you!
It's 9pm and all I want to do is go to the craft store and get started!
Haha... I love that!!! I hope you have fun once you get all your materials! ;-) Keep me posted!

I completely missed which printer ink jet or laser? Have gone back and forth but I must be missing it...Thank you in advance for your help!
Laser printer is a must for this technique. I use a Laser printer on regular printer paper. Thanks for watching!
These are beautiful! Was wondering if you can do the same technique on air dry clay? TYIA 🤔
I don't know the answer to that... I'd say do some experiments. Maybe there are videos? It would make them lighter that's for sure. Thanks for the question wish I had more info. on paper clay.
I love it!
Thanks so much.
Very beautiful 😍 Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching & commenting!
Thank you🙏Indeed, they are beautiful
Thank you too! I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
OMG this is fantastic. I like the images thank you for the tutorial. I need your help .can you tell me please what paper and what printer can I use. For long time now I try to transfer on clay and the result is very bad. I try laser printer and many other techniques. You did this amazing work only with water. Thank you for your time.good job.
This technique is to be used with regular printer paper ( I used very basic, cheap paper) on a LASER printer printouts. What clay are you using? Polymer clay works here because of the chemical reaction between the polymer and the ink. Thanks for watching and I hope you can find a way that works great for you.
@@MichelleRaeLandry thank you very much.you are very kind. I use all brands .
This is so cute ☺️ I’m gonna make one for my mom and my gramma 🥰

Lovely! Thank you
Thank you!
Where is the snail you did?
Hehehe so many people worried about my little snail, you might have missed my explanation but I do believe in the rule of 3... it makes for better compositions and I left it out so that because I felt the piece was stronger with three clay pieces and then some natural elements. No fear, that little guy ended up in other project. Thanks for watching!

Con gusto seguí adelante haciendo mas tutoriales.
Love this tutorial! Can I use an ink jet printer, and I noticed that you didn't varnish over the gilded edge, how will that hold up to weather? Thanks for the tips!!
I don't use these outside but if I did, YES I would varnish all of it. This technique is not for an ink jet, however there are channels that show inkjet methods, so you could apply their methods and this project idea.
Beautiful 🤩 xxx 😽
Thanks so much!
So beautiful! I would like to know if it works the same with the air dry clay
I don't work with air dry clay so I don't have this answer... but I believe there are videos on youtube about this. I believe there is a technique, so with that said once you find a way to do it you can still use the project idea. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing this.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
great video!! Thank u
Thank you for watching. 😊
Hi I am specifically looking for those mushroom images you were using. Can you let me know exactly from that site you referenced where to find from what book? I checkied out the Biodiversity Heritage site but find it difficult to actually see any images there without blindly downloading a book. Can you help me find images like yours more easily? I do not see pics on that website. I searched the keyword "mushroom" and it only shows a list of books for you to download not knowing of any images associated with these books
Hello. Yes biodiversity can rake time to sift through due images, however I would recommend that if you are willing to spend a few dollars… finding a digital kit on Etsy that is mushroom or woodland themed would save you a lot of time and give you lots of options quickly. If that’s something you are interested in I can list some of my favorite sellers. You can probably find some images for free on the graphics fairy website it has a wonderful free selection.
This is absolutely beautiful and one of my favorite tutorials..can you do one where you show how you shaded the edges of the other ones you made and show? I love the darkened edges..do you just blend in some white and brown or copper paint?!
Thank you Miss Mary. Actually my favorite way to do edges is with Gilding Wax. It comes in a tub and you just rub it on. It comes in all kinds of metallic colors and is so easy to add to raw or baked clay. You can find links to the product I use on my Favorites page in the info. box. Thanks for your kind comment, I'm glad you like this project.
excelente video ...LIKE.. PLEASE, will the transfer work even on already dried clay?
Once the clay is dry you won't be able to transfer this way...however look up the channel
Nitsa Creative Studio ... She is the EXPERT on every kind of image transfer there is. There is bound to be technique of hers that would work.
This is super cute.Thank you. Can you do this if you don't have access to a laser printer?
You’ll have to search RUclips for an inkjet printer technique... This is for laser only and I don’t know if it will work. Inkjet will work on paper clay from what o understand but I’ve never tried it.
I love these! Is polymer clay heavy..as in will it weigh down a Christmas tree branch do you think ? Ty!
It doesn’t weigh more than other ornaments… definitely do-able.
A mi no me resultó con mis recortes de imágenes. 😢
I just love these but I I must have skipped or step or something :( The images that you are showing are on some kind of special transfer paper? I don't understand how they are transferred to the clay without ripping? You printed the images on regular copy paper using a laser printer and then they just come off when wettened on paper clay? Would they just rip?
No special transfer paper needed, regular cheap copy paper is all I use. The key is the laser printer. Go back and rewatch Minute 10:00 - 16:00 to see how I wet and then transfer the image. All the steps are there. Good luck and thanks for watching.
@@MichelleRaeLandryI've seen inkjet printer transfers work also (I read the plastic in the laser jet inks gets dissolved by the polymer clay's plasticizer), but I wanted to ask-------------------------- Does the laser ink print transfer a photorealistic image onto the clay? Is it as good as a laser printed print?
@@coulterjb22 I haven't had any issue with the laser ink... and I haven't had any issue with it deteriorating the clay ( I have some items that are several years old.) I'm not saying that info. isn't correct... I have no idea if it is, but just haven't had any issue in my experience. Ink Jets can work too, but my understanding it is a different process. As far as the photorealistic image... I haven't tried that yet but I really want to, so maybe I'll give it a go in 2021 and post the results. Thanks for your comment and the discussion. I love chatting about clay!
@@MichelleRaeLandry By dissolve I meant the laser jet inks adhere to the clay better. I'm looking forward to how your photorealistic RUclips goes. I'll be watching :)
Hello thank you for this video it’s very beautiful 😍 my question is can I do the same with air dry clay?
I wish I could give you an answer. I've never used it...however you could adapt this project to any air dry clay technique. Thanks for the question.
Excellent work 👍🏻
Thanks a lot 😊
Mahalo (Thank You)!
Thanks for watching . 🤍
Can you tell me how long you bake the clay, please
I bake my clay 30 minutes.
Nice ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much!
Wich kind of printer it has to be??? A Laser printer or not?
Nice greetings from Austria!!!!
It has to be laser for this technique but there are ways for inkjet to be transferred, the process is differnt. I recommend watching www.youtube.com/@NitsaCreativeStudio for all things image transfer. My expertise is with Polymer... hers is image transfer. Enjoy!
Thanks for great video. Do you cover the gilt edge and back with the finish?
It’s a personal preference. The gilt wax I use doesn’t rub off … but if you use gilt paint I would cover. It depends on durability of the gold finish.
How much do you charge for classes?
When I teach live I charge $25 for an hour - 1.5 hour class. If It's a multi-session class it ranges.
Absolutely love these!! I can’t wait to try!
I work primarily with sculpting vs jewelry/wall hanging, do you supposed this method would work well in already dry painted pieces?
I work with the beige super sculpy so it would be extra cost to go buy a bunch of white lol
Is the clay baked/cured already? Are you working with polymer? I guess not knowing exactly what type of clay you use ...I would say this... image transfer is something that can be applied to all types of clay and substrates, but it takes different techniques to get images to transfer based on what you are transferring to. Knowing it can be done is the first "ah ha" part, then figuring out how to use transfer in your project is the second. If you are a polymer person, then as long as the clay is raw and uncured this should work. If you are working with a different type of clay (air dry for example) you would need to research image transfer with that material. RUclips has a wealth of image transfer videos for all kinds of materials so hopefully if polymer isn't your medium you will find a transfer that works with yours.
