Glad to see a pro doing this more seriously. Played 4 years RHBH and RHFH only, decided my forehand was not good enough and no amount of practice could get it to where I wanted it to be and switched to RHBH and LHBH. Have been throwing this way for almost a year and the results are amazing. Highly recommend. Body feels better, more shots have opened up, I have better control and more distance than I ever did with RHFH.
@@dwill2515 I hit my first ace lefty a few days ago. I've been having some tendinitis in my right elbow so if I want to play I gotta do it lefty. I wonder how many people have aced at least once with either hand?
I’m right-handed, but started throwing lefty 3 months ago and it’s completely reinvented my game. I grew up playing baseball and golf and the lefty backhand motion far more similar to a right-handed swing in those sports. My left hand currently out drives my right hand by 50ft so I mostly drive with my left, but still putt/approach with my right. However, my goal is to be completely ambidextrous and let the shot dictate which arm I use, so please keep these videos coming!
I thought the same thing; a lefty throw is the same movement as baseball and golf, so I tried lefty for awhile. I had one lefty throw that was crazy good, but I was never able to duplicate it. I quit trying lefty too early, because I needed the righty practice so desperately. I think I'll start up again, because I'm terrible throwing righty, so lefty can't be much worse.
I love how you are turning a disappointing circumstance into a potential positive! I developed a forehand game under a similar situation because I couldn't stop throwing. Keep going Simon and keep us posted!
switchin up sides is super helpful. i did that with skating when i started, made sure to try tricks on both sides when learning em. it def opens your eyes to viewing things differently too. options open up.
More please! This is amazing and very helpful for a lefty that has played sports with my right hand all my life because no one wants to teach a lefty. I have recently started throwing left handed and appreciate this bigly!
I started doing this over a year ago just for balance, symmetry and health. You'll be surprised at how fast you progress. It wasn't very long before I incorporated it into my game when that wasn't even my original intention. There's also evidence that it will help develop more power and skill into your righty game as well.
I've been playing for 9months now. I started throwing with both hands front the start. It really helped my game. Especially when you're in a tough spot.
As a traditional righty that had to retrain to throw lefty after the first two years of playing disc golf. I always love seeing videos like this because they remind me of what I went through. How I retrained is I utilized the backhand motion of using a baseball bat. And I did standstill shots for a very long time. Only this year did I begin to use walk/run-ups, as well as really force myself to do lhfh.
Simon, I was just telling Connor, from the discmania store, this morning how much I learned from this video. Thank you!!! The time you put into it is greatly appreciated!
My friend got elbow surgery last November, and had to learn to play lefty from anywhere outside of jump putt range. We were always dead even playing together, so it kind of sucked. He's now throwing drives around 340 right where he wants them, and it goes to show that you can do anything with practice.
The two best activities for balanced physicality are swimming and cross country skiing. Thanks for this video as your critiques of your throwing form are really helpful for people like myself that are just getting started in disc golf.
Phenomenal series. Cant wait for upcoming videos. Being able to see a top pro work on problems most of us have ourselves will give us a great idea of drills to work on and the most efficient way to improve!
Actually, as a baseball player in my youth, I learned how to throw a Frisbee left handed. In college, I had to learn to throw right handed to play ultimate as a left backhand and a right 2 finger were the same thing. When I started Disc Golf, I threw a disc the same way I threw an ultimate 2 finger and quickly hurt my elbow. Today, for distance I throw either right or left handed as both my shots are about equal, perhaps slightly better left. My point is that anyone who played baseball the body position will feel very natural left handed and start out leveraging that motion.
I have been doing this for the 46 years I have played various forms of disc ... started with my old soccer days where you had to know how to use your left and right foot ... I carried it over into disc freestyle ... I taught myself to give Z's left handed and right handed and can delay both spins and do tricks with either hand either spin (was 4th in florida one year in freestyle when I was young and good looking) ... then I got into disc golf when I was older and started the same thing ... left handed for shots that call for it and right handed for everything else ... sometimes I go out and play left handed against right handed ... left usually wins (even though I am right handed) ... because I think i concentrate more when I throw my left ... and for some reason my left drives are better than my right (at least they used to be, but I have been working on my right) ... anytime you want to visit Tallahassee, Florida and try out our courses, we can share some left/right experiences ... I am 62 and still get out to the "Church of the Chains" (that's what my wife calls it cause we always play sunday morning) ... and we love your videos !!!! take care and keep them coming !!!
I’m not a pro, but I’m decent and I throw lefty from 200 in if it’s the shot shape I need. It’s pretty easy to develop an accurate hyzer throw. Couldn’t imagine trying to throw an anyhyzer shot though.
Great vid, Simon! I highly recommend this for all players. I have had to throw lefty for a couple months while recovering from shoulder surgery on my throwing arm. Throwing with my non-dominant arm has taught me a great deal about generating power. Although my best throw as a lefty has only been about 270 feet, it has made me much better at throwing with my right now that I have rehabilitated enough to throw righty again!
This is an interesting idea especially for beginners and ams. It's like watching the pro version of you comparing it to an amateur version of you and how to improve upon it.
Great diagnosis, Simon! At first glance, they looked so similar, but with your comments I see key differences... and will use my educated eye to break down my own form. Many thanks! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I am also trying to learn lefty right now, also giving my injured right elbow a rest. And I also just bought a house in Massachusetts, with a pool table. Married last year, so at least that is different... and the world class distance thing. And the trick shots. And the 50+ foot putts. And...
I had shoulder reconstruction on my throwing side and switched to lefty for all drives for about 1.5 years. If you golf right handed or swing a bat right handed it won't take long to feel natural. Best tip? Don't expect to favor the same discs for the same shots (especially drivers). I had to disc up for my left hand. GOOD LUCK!
Great Video! Maybe add a Picture in Picture of you speaking in the corner during the video? Loved it regardless. Best of luck learning to throw lefty! I’ve been playing for 10 years and have thrown with my left hand less than 10 times. I now feel motivated to give it a shot as well. Looking forward to seeing your progress!
This is extremely relevant to my interests. I throw lefty backhands as my primary throw, but I throw overhands and ball sports right handed so I can’t forehand lefty. I can throw a righty backhand in a pinch, but I’ve been meaning to work on it more.
Nastier Nate I’m in the exact same boat, except mirrored; I’m left-handed, but throw RHBH. My left-handed forehand rotates like a RHBH, so is useless other than throw around obstacles. A LHBH would be so cool to have. Gonna try to learn along with Simon.
Jenny & Craig Adventures Out of curiosity, have you played much baseball or ball golf? I grew up playing ball golf, so the shoulder rotation of a lefty backhand felt natural to me.
I love how nothing gets this guy down. I’ve had a similar knee injury for a month now and am just getting back out there. Keep it up Simon! It gets better! Looking forward to seeing you back in action in a few months!
Im left handed so i play lefty. You know how many vids on leftu disc golf are... I found 1 guy with like 5 vids from 10 years ago. So this is very helpful.
Great idea. I hurt my left shoulder this year and switched to playing right handed until it healed. It’s definitely possible and kept me outside and on the course instead of sitting at home stagnant
Good job bro. I threw lefty for over 6 months because of an elbow injury and now that my right arm is healed I still throw lefty when the course calls for it.
Many pros seem to turn their arms, wrists and disc to anhyzer on the RHBH backswing. Gurthie turned the disc almost vertical when throwing in a distance contest. IMO, allows shoulders to turn more easily.
Great timing! I started to teach myself yesterday because I have an injured right shoulder. It would be cool if you made a video showing the process to make a side-by-side video.
I'm a natural lefty but I've always thrown a back hand righty because of being a lefty baseball player and golfer. so when i started disc golf I realized my righy backhand and lefty forehand did the same thing. so now I play both lefty and righty backhand and it took awhile to get used to it but its definitely made my game a lot better being able to shape the disc anyway I could possibly need to.
Hey Simon! I"ve had to learn lefty several time in my history because of injury! It takes some practice! Don't give up! It will make you a better player! Here is something I've learned, driving and mid-range is easy compared to lefty putting!! Good Luck and keep up the positive attitude!
Awesome I am also working on my lefty throw due to a accident that took of the tips of 3 of my right hand fingers.I also am working on my left hand Turbo putts.I look forward to your future videos thanks Turbo Tim .
I've been playing for 5 months, normally right-handed, but when I need a right turn I throw left-handed. To my surprise, I throw farther with the left (maybe because I concentrate more on form? although I feel more comfortable right handed (and more consistent).
SUBSCRIBED! Cluster challenge: you get 5 throws(any discs), mark 100 feet, throw your first disc past the 100 foot mark trying to land each disc on top of the last thrown disc, your score is how many feet away the discs are from each other (example: first disc is thrown 110 feet, the next is thrown 130 your score is now 20, the third disc is thrown 125, you pick the closest disc to the last thrown disc, now your score is 25, forth disc is thrown 111 now your score is 26, etc.) I wish you the best recovery and thank you for inspiring so many friendly people in this sport!
This is great! I have an injury in my dominant (right) shoulder so I taught myself lefty over the last three months. Way easier than I thought - I was a novice righty and I'm already slightly better lefty because I was able to take what I knew and apply it to a "clean slate." Can't wait to be ambidextrous when the right side heals. Very interested in how this turns out...
Quite interesting how the start of your reach back in both cases is almost exactly the same, ie rotating back with a slightly bent arm. Only difference is that in your regular throw, right before you engage, you pop your arm out to full extension straight out from your body.
Enjoyed this! Don't forget to include the shot of the day. Throw in a slowmo or nature shot every once in a while as a bonus! Rest up; heal up! We all want to see you out there next season!
yeeeeeeees this is perfect! watching a pro, with all the understanding of the game, having to build the skillset from scratch is going to be super entertaining!! Of course I wish your right hand is back to normal as soon as quickly, but I am really going to enjoy watching you throw lefty in the meantime :)
I am actually super excited to see this. I have been wanting to practice my lefty throws to have more options on the course. The interesting thing is that a lefty backhand is VERY similar to a righty golf swing or baseball swing so that might be a good way to trick your mind as far as the weight shift and footwork go.
I just had shoulder surgery on my dominant arm and need to learn to throw lefty for the next 3 months for my sanity. I appreciate the video... it's comforting with how dumb my left hand is.
I learned how to throw lefty a couple years ago because of a bad elbow, doesn't feel completely natural yet cause I don't use it all the time but it's definitely useful for a those certain shots. I think I'll always have a bit of elbow pain but we learn how to manage it.
I just got back from field work and saw this. I was so psyched, because I was one of the people who suggested this. Good stuff. Can't throw at all? You throw better lefty than I do righty. Not really but it's close; I'm bad and old. It's been months since I last threw and it was pretty bad, although I did throw a couple good sidearm throws, which I hadn't had before. I'll try that moving in stupid-slo-mo to train my movements. I look forward to the next one. Please add a few shots of lefty darts too. Hi Mookie. I'm also a cat dad so I loved that part too.
That would be awesome to see Simon. Aj Risley is one of the few people I see throw lefty shots pretty often for upshots. Even if its a solid 300 foot hyzer that could be so useful. If you want some fun btw, try putting Lefty hahaha . when I messed up my thumb I taught myself to throw lefty, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but I stopped working on it once I could throw righty again. I always told people throwing lefty was like trying to print you name with your left hand, and putting was like learning to draw something with your left hand.
@@Schwick-wc7uo Definitely. It does take time as many things do. I had to retrain to throw lefty, now I'm mostly lefty. But. I can do some things righty, the muscle memory and sense of authority with flick shots and other things are still there.
Regarding 9:26 yes, that's rounding. I think the reason your right shoulder isn't very open is because your right foot isn't pointed as far back as your left when throwing righty. I'm splayfooted, so I can never get my feet perpendicular to the target, sadly.
Well, I am a newby but I am old and have a very simple no-run-up form. To me, throwing "switch hitter" is the best way to have hyzer and anhyzer skills.
I injured my left elbow a few years ago and couldn't throw anywhere near full power Lhbh, so I decided to try and figure out rhbh and I now throw about 80 feet further right handed. Still more accurate left handed but it's been great for my game!
I've been struggling with a sore upper left glute that's not healing as fast as I'd like so I decided to take a break from disc. But today I decided to work on my sidearm since I'm terrible at them and it doesn't hurt my sore glute at all. However I watched this video a couple days ago so decided to throw some left handed back hands... I filmed my throws and was super surprised of what I saw. First off I had some throws going nearly as far as my right handed throws and watching the slow mo footage later my form looks to be better than my right handed as well! Now I'm starting to think I might just abandon learning sidearm and just work on my left handed back hands since I'm already throwing them so well. It could be another couple weeks for this pain to subside and it isn't bothered by the left handed throwing so who knows, a couple weeks from now I may be throwing further lefty than righty lol. It'll be interesting to see Simon's left handed progression... Maybe he'll switch to that into the future instead of throwing forehands...
Nice! I'm so glad you're doing this. I was hoping you'd get the itch to play and start training lefty. I feel in time the ability to use both arms could make someone with your skill and ability a powerhouse in the sport.
The forehand even at one throw, tears my elbow up. I started throwing lefty! It’s going swimmingly. Also the down tilt of the disc in the rh throw keeps you arm inline. Try that lefty it works!
You can do this. I can throw an American football left handed. Took me a while but eventually I was throwing perfect spirals 40 yards. This will come in handy for scrambling. Especially when you get stuck behind bushes and throw a left forehand to get out.
I have played ambidextrous since I started. Really didn't have any kind of forehand with left or right hand. Left hand backhand is now a completely different line than right hand forehand and vice-versa for me. Even though my game still has it's weak points, throwing both hands has definitely helped me
It's just another club in the bag. It's certainly not going to be a consistent shot off the tee. But it's certainly a good shot to have for stand still mid ranges/approaches. Plus you can get out still play a round while resting your right arm.
Getting used to the left side x step was sort of tough for me to learn until I decided to just do it. But, I definitely feel comfortable with a right side x step for my forehands.
I was remembering back in the 80s whenever we'd throw a park job, we'd call "fahrvergnungen" after the VW adds here in America that touted driving a VW gave the German's fahrvergnugen or "driving pleasure."
Simon found a way to show us himself working on his own poor form. Fantastic! Perfect timing to kick off off-season training and fieldwork. Thank you Simon!
Simon, you are going to help a lot of left handed players here ! Your form may be bad, but still looks better than a lot of the lefty's I've seen. And you've just started. (I'm left handed myself, but for some reason I throw right handed.)
What would be an interesting series, is you already identified the issues with your form. What people would like to know is what do you address first and what drills are you planning on using to fix those issues. The crazy thing is about for lefty form is you have better form than most people but I am guessing you have been doing this sport for a while. Lol. I have been playing for a while and I seem to get one thing better and then something else falls apart. Anyways I can’t wait for the next video, good luck.
Awesome content. I think if you can throw with your left as good as you do your right you can murder a course. You literally double your arsenal of throws. Best of luck and I look forward to watching you improve.

Always been ambidextrous so i use a step out left forehand to get out of woods. Its a very usefull throw to have!
This is awesome to see all the things I’m missing on from the right side thanks Simon 👍🏽👍🏽
I have not been able to throw a sidearm without hurting myself. So I started learning to throw lefty about 2 months ago. Good luck!
I just had shoulder surgery on my dominant arm and need to learn to throw lefty for the next 3 months for my sanity. I appreciate the video... it's comforting with how dumb my left hand is.
Thank you so much for doing this for all of us left out here.
Nice explanation on throw mechanics!!
Super helpful video, thanks for bringing us along while you learn
this video is great trying to fix my form by having Simon's "beginner" throw
This is a great self critique. Looking forward to watching your progress.
As a lefty beginner, this will prove to be extremely valuable once I start getting out in the field more. Thanks, Simon! :)
This is pure gold. Thank you.
Teaching myself lefty as well. Like you said, balance in life is key 🤙
I'd like to see more pros train for lefty just as well. As I've told several people before, the future of this sport is in full ambidexterity.
True words.
Next gen players will if we model the effort to be ambidextrous.
Baby steps.
@@Schwick-wc7uo Definitely. It does take time as many things do. I had to retrain to throw lefty, now I'm mostly lefty. But. I can do some things righty, the muscle memory and sense of authority with flick shots and other things are still there.
This is going to be so fun to watch. I'm so psyched about this. Thanks Simon!
Simon coming up with a new journey in the off season. Nice
I have played ambidextrous since I started. Really didn't have any kind of forehand with left or right hand. Left hand backhand is now a completely different line than right hand forehand and vice-versa for me. Even though my game still has it's weak points, throwing both hands has definitely helped me
I'm glad you took my advice to try lefty... ya' never know when it may come in handy. Good luck...feel better.
It's just another club in the bag. It's certainly not going to be a consistent shot off the tee. But it's certainly a good shot to have for stand still mid ranges/approaches. Plus you can get out still play a round while resting your right arm.
It’s crazy how good you are at making video ideas. When you start fixing things, tell us how it affects the distance after you fixed it
Super helpful stuff Simon. Thanks for keeping the great content coming.
Love the commitment you are putting in to this!
I had to learn how to play lefty after I broke my wrist a couple years ago. Now I'm more use to playing lefty now than right handed.
Glad to see you took my suggestion from last video! Love all your videos!

Great one throw lefty and Simon is already better then my life long lefty throws....
What an awesome idea for a video series. Very helpful breakdown. 👍👍
As a lefty I will be referring to this video a lot in the future. Thanks as always for the great content.
Hooray, you got the cat! We actually adopted a cat and her name was Mookie too. Thank you for this series! As a newbie DG, this is VERY helpful. Looking forward to following the progress. Take care!
Welcome to team ambidextrous, I've been playing that way since 1988 and still going strong.
This is going to be so interesting on tour next year! If he can get this down it’s gonna be an cool and massive advantage!
