This week, after the surprise of Spec Ops: The Line, Inversion has us back to being able to judge a game by the cover.
Fast-talking Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw reviews a new game each week in this animated series that combines informed critique with cutting humor. Watch the next episode of Zero Punctuation a week early, only on The Escapist.

For the fellow archaeologists like me who found this vid and are wondering what the "fucked up plot reveal" he mentions in the credits is:
It's revealed in the end that the main characters best friend found his daughters body at an early point in the story and chose not to tell him.
Very fucked indeed
Shitbag of the Day award goes to that guy.
Eh. It sounds like LISA: The Painful's plot twist but not as good or as fucked.
So this is how the judging by the cover started... 2 years ago
+Deadman And I think the deserves to judge again simply because they could've some awesome box art based on the whole gravity inversion thing and all they could think of was to turn it side ways
"Judging by the cover cut my workload."
Well, Yatzee, now Judging by the Cover has increased your workload
I just realised while going through some of these older episodes that if i ever meet Yahtzee in real life I will be kind of disappointed that he is not some disproportionate figure made of paper with floating circles instead of hands who always has a fedora on 😐😐😐😐😐😐😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕
Henry Johnson Yes, but he's probably the closest person to a disproportionate figure made of paper with floating circles for hands wearing a fedora...
***** Let's make it a date, gorgeous.
*****
Just by the number of times and the intensity with which you say penis, I have a feeling you're compensating for something.
*****
Was. And yeah you're probably right, different times bro, people have changed now.
*****
Yes, yes I am.
RUclips doest understand i dont want ads about the phone im using to watch this
They don't choose which ads to roll, they just roll them when the video author allows them to.
Buttonmasher50
thats what they want you to think
Boy this comment hasn't aged well
That reference made me spit out my tea all over the desk and now ive got to spend the next 10 minutes cleaning it all up! Thanks for masterfully crafting a fucking fantastic joke over the course of 5 minutes that is now going to take me 10 minutes to reverse the reaction
"Yeah that reference won't seem dated at all"
Oh Yahtzee you curmudgeon.
That reference was an elder-god tier meme before you even made it.
It is unkillable and non-euclidean, and it can never die; we may only await its inevitable awakening to devour us all. Ia ia!
"Let's go flick staples at the cat" that's definitely in my top 10 Yahtzee lines
*SHIT, THE GROUND'S SHAKIN'!*
DarkWingDerpy "God look at this... there's nothing left..."
"yeah, I can see."
No, that was before the plague hit.
Question: was the entire video building up to that reference?
GigaKyte and I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
And tell you how I became the fresh prince of Bel-air
"where you systematically run out of children"
omg how did i miss that the first time. epic lolz
The phrase 'before shit rockets fanwards' has become a phrase I use on occasion and it took me a hot minute to recall it was a Zero Punctuation episode where I'd heard it.
First time I've watched this series. Subscribed halfway through. Brilliant.
I'm making my way through my PS3 backlog and revisiting ZP reviews before I play them. It's q good way of setting low expectations for games to fail to meet. So far, Yahtz nailed this one.
SHIT. THE GROUND IS SHAKIN'
Best Will Smith reference.
No Yahtzee. The fresh prince of BelAir is timeless.
allmost as time less as the fresh prince of bell end
matt smith now THAT sounds like a joke Yahtzee would make :)
The theme song still comes in some clubs to this day...no lie
I was going to say that too...
It's also a Haiku! 5 - 7 - 5
This is the story
All about how my life got
Flip-turned upside down
You can thank Zer0 from Borderlands 2 for that piece of hilarious knowledge because that's how I learned of it. xD
God, yes that ending was fucked up... Spoilers obviously.
"My best buddy just died fighting the alien leader, but at least now I don't have to tell him I found his dead daughter in the exact same place we found his dead wife... sure dodged a bullet there!"
huh...since Yhatzee has kids now, I like to picture them watching this video and he having to awkwardly explain to them how they need to sweeten the pot before he fights anything to save them ^^;
So very funny with all the gravity farts, the awkward standing position and the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reference! :D
Shit! the ground is shakin'!
jerma and star_....nice.
In Western Australia, born and raised!
Playing point 'n click adventures to spend most of his days.
chilling and playing, just gaming all cool,
when some spunkgargleweewee made him all drool.
Just a couple 'o games, they were up to no good.
Started messing up FPS-neighborhood.
Yahtzee stood up from his chair and simply said "Oh my!"
When another FPS went all "Press X not to die".
* Yahtzee Dance *
this is one of those games where the only reason i remember it existed, or knew about it at all, is 'cause Yahtzee's review's hilarious
"Now go crouch behind cover and growl at things like a trapped stoat." That line still gets me. XD
The description it says "judging by the cover",which is a weird coincidence since I was watching that series on escapist plays and happened to randomly click on this ZP video(judging by the cover is by yahtzee if you didnt know).
And now on Judging By The Cover.
There's one thing that I disagree with. Saving your kid from monsters is a pretty freaking powerful motivation. Maybe the writers didn't do a good enough job of showing that.
I think Jim Butcher captures the intensity of this motivation quite accurately in the Dresden Files books.
"I will make Maggie safe. If the world burns because of that then so be it. Me and the kid will roast some marshmallows."
If you didn't get it right away, Maggie is the name of the protagonist's kid daughter, and the author literally has him choosing his daughter's safety and the end of the world as we know it.
I'm not comparing Inversion with the Dresden Files. I'm using the way Jim Butcher portrayed the "save your kid from monsters" motivation as a good example on how powerful it is.
That's because Harry Dresden is hardcore enough to put it that way and it'd fit well.
That's a great way to look at it
I agree with you
Another way I look at it personally is with Ellie from the last of us. She definitely inspired me to want to keep her safe and see her journey through. The beginning of the game also showed what losing your daughter could be like and it all seemed convincing to me, but the writing is clearly better in that game than inversion.
Tired of "parent saving child" plot lines. It seems lazy, and I also don't love the implications that someone is immediately beyond all ethical reproach or accusations of selfishness when they're looking out for the good of their genetic spawn.
cHRISmERRITTmUSIC Do you have a child?
I read a preview of _Jam_
I found I read it in your voice XD
Lorna M I'm seeing a lot of your avatar lately! '-' What is it?! Is that a anime, manga, webcomic, massproduced fanart? It's bothering me now knowing who this furry cat thing is. '-'
^^ It's a webcomic called Prequel or Making a cat cry: the adventure. It's set in tamriel fr0m the elderscrolls series
Lorna M
Amen! *Hugs you tightly* I was trying to get the name of this thing for a long time. '-' People seem obcessed with it, and i feel like i'm missing it. xD Thanks! Many many thanks! :D
^^ S'okay. I didn't think it was that popular
+Lorna M Gotta get the audiobook
Mad Max
Inversion
Any more reviews that mention the famed Lord Humongous?
escapist has an amazing flair for tearing a game apart (not sarcasm, i mean its really well done) yet i still love the positive game reviews.
"Judging by the cover" prequel?
"there is a point where fatherly devotion gets a bit weird .... you could always stay home and make a new one". i think, maybe, you should try not to have children.
He doesn't want kids anyway. He's made that perfectly clear in other videos, particularly the Kirby's Epic Yarn one.
+epicsauceness100 in the ni no kuni review he mentions he finds children less enjoyable company than poisonous sea urchins with attachment issues
+timebomb456 And now in one of his latest Let's Drown Out videos he mentions he might want kids lol.
+epicsauceness100 the yahtzee that narrates the ZP videos is just a character, a caricature of his actual self, with his own traits greatly exaggerated or downplayed. (don't take it from me alone, he said it several times on other mediums)
I come from the future! He has bred!
did i just fucking get fresh princed by yatzee.
+Wyatt Williams The term is "Bel-Aired"
Was that a Fresh Prince reference at the end? Oh hell yes it was.
Nice Mad Max Reference at 1:33
That last joke put a massive smile on my face
And I'd like to take a minute, just si- *gets run over by a train*
Hugh mungus meme in 2012. good job yahzee
CNC-Sam Are you actually differently abled?
What
?
No are you. Cause you have apparently never heard of irony...
CNC-Sam How is that supposed to be "ironic"
This video came out in 2012. I saw that yahzee made a Hugh mungus joke. This of course was a coincidence. But I wanted to have some shits & giggles so I posted a comment saying the above. Obviously it's not serious and obviously it's a coincidence but I made it sound like he was aware of the meme back in 2012. Irony!
Inversion maybe an adequate name if it is referring to that smoggy cloud that covers Northern Utah 3 months of the year.
On the 'Inversion' title bit covered at the end, this seems awfully familiar to the cover-up Bethesda did with TES:Arena. Originally, the game was built as an arena combat simulator, but, as time progressed, it evolved into a full RPG with the word Arena on literally everything, so they had the option of renaming it and everything or redefining the title. And since every scrap of originality in the gaming industry is picked off during production, the inversion aspect probably did the same.
Lets go flick staples at the cat. Lmao
look into the video description and go to the website of the escapist under videos you can see zero punctuation
I now know the secret!
If I ever make a game, I will send the first copy to Yahtzee...Along with a basket of Cadbury Creme Eggs to keep him satisfied long enough to play it all the way through before I quickly steal it back before he can point out the flaws!
Maybe he should start a series called "Judging by the cover".
Nah it would never work out
Rubbish I say! Rubbish!
Pure nonsense.
Every day I'm astounded by how few people on the internet know sarcasm.
Apart from this being brilliant, he wasn't born in Australia, but in Brittain. Other than that, thanks for making my week!
Da Yahtzee Dance! Here's yo chance, ta do da Grump! A-do da Grumpty Grump! Errbody do da Grumpty Grump!
he sounds like TL;DR having a seizure at 1.5 speed
+doodsalot270
But slightly deeper.
The ending is great! That's why you should stop looking at the comments and watch the video!
(If you have watched the video please disregard this message)
the escapist releases all zero punctuation vids a month or tow early on their website but some guy at the escapist said fuck that and now we have about 8 zero punctuation vids thrown in our face
i liked that space oddysy reference
"Shit! Ground is shakin'!" -- Inversion guy
2:00 - 2:16
Yahtzee, father of the apocalyptic year.
DAMMIT. I think I confused this for Intrusion 2, which Yahtzee might honestly halfway enjoy.
I was waiting for the Fresh Prince joke to be made.
By the time I'm done watching this video, the next zero punctuation will be uploaded
And he didn't even touch on the whole "they were in space the whole time" thing.
he does live in australia... and he got an australian citizen ship... which makes him asutralian... ok he may was born in england or somewhere but still
0:19
The world has been subjected to facing the true horrors of war, and shown that merely partaking in a simulation of its brutality is no less a wretched existence.
*PFFFFFFT*
when the background went from yellow then blue then back to yellow my eyes started hurting
Has it really been eight years since I played HL2?
Holy shit.
How long have I been in this basement?
They're uploading all the videos on the Escapist Magazine (the official website) to RUclips so that all the RUclips watchers can keep up
I wonder if they are now going to perpetually keep up to date as I'm guessing they arn't getting great hits on their own site.
And you became the prince of a town called Bel Air?
This one might even be years old, and i saw it on youtube already. Cant remember ever going on the Escapists website much. Either way, they know their cash cow and will not release his recent videos on youtube any sooner...
1:33 Isn't that how the evil within started?!
With this video, judging by the cover was born.
I thought you were pretty genius, that joke was golden. haha
Fatherly devotion huh. I'd love to see you review Asuras Wrath
He was born and raised in England actually :3
Gravity Rush uses gravity mechanics much better.
Fun fact: Yahtzee's last 3 lines ARE a haiku.
As used by Zer0 in Borderlands 2. xD
2017: _Still a great reference._
Alas it seems that the ONLY shooter that got it right with gravity mechanics was Prey, released back in 2006. And of course there's Dead Space but still...
Apart from the lies of exploring the ship, and crap illogical death mechanics, i must agree. The gravity mindfuck was amazing.
that book sounds like the people are in a jam
"Glasses twat" Haha.
no the youtube account is the archive of the escapist, like a backup
Now let me take a minute just sit right there. I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town call Bell Air
a zero gravity shooter actually has some promise if done well
I feel like flicking staples at my cat now.
Shit! The ground is shaking!
1:34 Lord Hugh Mungus?
Ever seen Mad Max: Road Warrior?
You know, for all the times Yahtzee points out how people keep nicking ideas and themes from Half-Life, I've come to a startling realization. Not only is he right, but I can see why!
It's archetypal. It combines so many mythic and science fiction themes and marries them so excellently that Half-Life is the video game equivalent of the original Star Wars trilogy.
Timesplitters managed to do a similar thing, using the Time Travel premise to make several different game types, ranging from classic warfare, zombie shooters, sci fi warfare and even a Terminator style machine war.
It's probably why it and Half Life are my favourite FPSes ever.
this is the 4th video I watched that was posted on my birthday. 0.o
dont listen to them, moooore uploads haha love these vids
the target: everything!
Loved the 2001 space odysee reference!
insert judging by the cover joke
Best vid yet
Good luck man... You gonna need it!
+1 point for the fresh prince reference.
is this where "judging by the cover" the show came from, so it's back to being half his job.
So true
The ground is shaking.
yup
I only remember this game because of the Fresh Prince joke.
A popular dice based board game.
I've just discovered my true calling: to create a cover shooter that Ben Croshaw will enjoy.
This spawns the new series... Judging By the Cover. Where he judges things by the poster.
ohoh, nice ending !
One right here, old chap!
Wellp. Yahtzee did it.
He did the best Bel Air ever.
