  • The 2021 Citroen C4 is a compact hatchback, which looks like a crossover. The C4 is Citroen’s tenth compact car starting with the original 1928 Type C4, through Ami 6 and Ami 8, GS, BX, ZX, Xsara, C4 again, and C4 Cactus. But the Citroen C4 is not a direct replacement of the C4 Cactus. In terms of size it’s somewhere between the C4 Cactus and the C5 Aircross. Citroen no longer offers regular hatchbacks, liftbacks or estates. Everything has higher ground clearance, everything looks bold, and everything is focused on comfort.
    ↔ Citroen C4 dimensions:
    ✔ length: 4360 mm
    ✔ width: 1834 mm
    ✔ height: 1525 mm
    ✔ wheelbase: 2670 mm
    ✔ boot/trunk: 380/1250 L
    💲 Citroen C4 starting price: 24 000 euro
    💲 Citroen C4 price as tested: 31 000 euro

    I test drove a new C4 and showed my kids the tablet holder in front and they went nuts. I'm not a big fan however, what happens in the case of a collision in the front? I really like the car, including the design of the back of the car, the seats are far better than those in my C3 (2017), physical A/C controls, no more million levers behind the wheel indeed, the screen displays are wonderfully crisp and the 130bhp feels snappy enough - I can see why you say the car has German influences. Everything's where you expect it is.

      French journalists wanted to know what could happen with the tablet and the airbag in case of frontal impact. Citroen replied that the system was designed so that the tablet would not hit the passenger. The support breaks off making the tablet falling down before the airbag deploys.

    My daily driver is a Jaguar and my girlfriend has a C4 2015. We drove this 2018 generation with the 130 hp version in Mallorca as a rental and I was really impressed by the comfort and lack of NVH. Jaguar is definitely more sporty but the new C4 had similar rolling comfortness. I wouldn’t hesitate buying one if these parameters were what I was looking for. Image wise it’s no match for a Jag but for a reasonably priced family car it’s comfortable and typical french. We got about 4.5 l/100km on Mallorca mixed driving. Definitely has more character than the germans.

    Marek, in my opinion this car differs from the competition primarily in terms of suspension, and that's what puts this car on my shortest shopping list, besides all unnecessary smaller imperfections and weird solutions. You only mentioned some comfort, but not a word about what the suspension is really like and how it acts on an average bumpy and patchy road. I am already sick of sporty, hard-suspended and robust cars “which customers want”, and looking for a decent "family" car in which I wouldn't feel like a potato in a tractor trailer. How comfortable the PHC suspension is, especially when compared to the VW's DCC. Which of these two systems is softer and more comfortable?
    By the way, I like your reviews primary because of the honest and simple comments and information that don't look like they were copied from the catalog (which the other 95% of reviewers do), so I'm surprised that a more detailed description of the suspension and comfort was missing. Thank you in advance!!

      German cars are overpriced full stop. In real terms car manufacturing has got cheaper due to automation and sourcing of components from the far East as well as making cars outside of Germany, yet they have not passed these savings on to the consumer, preferring to ratchet up the prices of subsequent new models. Their reliability has also dropped off, my friend has recently had a new A class Mercedes and already he is having reliability issues with the electronics and Air Con.

    A question Marek, you mentioned the lights, is this something you could talk more about? LEDs are supposed to be powerful and safer but some do not seem so good. Thank you

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 года назад +5

      LEDs seem bright, because of the white hue they produce. However brightness expressed in lumens can vary depending on the application. As you probably remember, cars 20 years ago had halogen headlamps with manual levelling adjustment. There was usually a little dial or knob somewhere around the driver's knee. Fiat put it in the menu between the dials. But you get the general idea. Then came xenon headlights, which initially were installed on higher-end cars, and were so bright (>2000 lumens) that they came with a self-levelling mechanism. Basically sensors around the rear suspension, which adjusted the beam so that the car with xenon headlights would not dazzle oncoming traffic. This later trickled down to more affordable cars. Some models even had manual levelling adjustment, because less powerful xenon bulbs were used (especially in city cars or there was some some option to get "premium" headlights - whatever is necessary to pull some more money from your pocket :) ).
      And now we have the LED headlights, which come in two main forms: LED day running lights (because they can be nicely shaped to give the car a signature look) + halogen headlights, and full LED headlights. The latter can be 2000 with automatic self-levelling mechanism. From there we can go into more complex solutions, like matrix LED and laser lights, which are so smart, they will adapt to the type of road you are on (based on sat-nav information), your speed, etc., and they will "cut out" oncoming traffic. It's hard to capture on camera, but I tried for example in the "living in a 7 Series" video (ruclips.net/video/zXG6Ryb6F7M/видео.html), the A7 Sportback video (ruclips.net/video/5VBL4hqfK4o/видео.html - this one probably shows it best), and the E 53 AMG video (ruclips.net/video/SEtFKLYBFFE/видео.html). It doesn't look like much on camera, but with a naked eye there's like a darker square forming around the oncoming car. Also traffic signs are "cut out" from the beam so that you can see what's on the sign, rather than just a strong glare from the reflection. Clever stuff, and very good if you often drive at night in poorly lit areas. You can see 500-600 meters in front.

    Marek, A bit late but superb review again. I do not see anything German in the C4 but pure French design. Citroën is expanding it's design to more edgy straight lines then the more rounded playful design of C3, C3 and C5 Aircross. The C4 was the headstart of this design evolution and will continue with the new C5x. The C4 is full of French joie de vivre and imho designer Pierre Leclercq has hit the nail on the right spot. The best Citroën since years. I can't wait when you make a review of the new C5x.

      As for the quality - I suppose we all learn, as we go along, and this goes for my video as well. I know it may sound silly, but it took me 7-8 years of doing this to start playing with manual camera settings, and probably in the last year I started paying more attention to controlling the light (if possible), etc. So if you can see the improvement, it's a sign I'm going in the right direction.

    I'd love it if you went into more details about the autonomy features. Autopilot tech is why I buy a new car in the 2020s instead of just getting a second hand one.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 года назад +3

      I have an extensive comparison Tesla 3 vs. VW Arteon on my second channel, but it's in Polish only. Long story short: European (lets call them European) brands have the tech, but are not legally ready for greater autonomy. Also they want to introduce it gradually as part of normal facelifts and new generations. This is their business model. Tesla on the other hand, although it is far from being fully autonomous (Autopilot was a brilliant term from the marketing perspective, although these days it carries an asterisk on the Tesla website), has adopted a business model, which allows for frequent OTA updates, which unlock some of the features, which may not be legal here from the showroom.
      Tesla vs. VW - Tesla will stop for pedestrians, which VW will not do. Tesla will try and follow the road, once it gets its bearings, VW needs to see the while lines at all times to be able to assist you in driving. AFAIK the full autonomy feature in Tesla is very limited in Europe.

      @@MarekDrives I appreciate that and I'll try to watch it in polish with subs. I'm also interested in what Hyundai is offering in their 2021 cars like the new Tucson. They're apparently quite advanced. You can also put a comma two on a toyota or hyundai and have even more capabilities.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 года назад +2

      There are no subs :(
      The video is almost 1h long, and was unscripted, so translating it, and adding subtitles just wasn't worth it.
      I'll add a longer semi-autonomous driving segment to the next review with a decent set of self-driving functions. I wish you left this comment last week, because I was filming the BMW 5 Series, where the semi-autonomous system works brilliantly.
      I'm currently test driving a Toyota, which is far behind in terms of driving autonomy (at least from the clients' perspective).

    Hi Marek, nice review! Will you also test the e-c4? Also about the semi-autonomous driving: Citroen claims the c4 has stop-go functionality. Meaning it can keep up with traffic and stop when the car in front stops, then accelerate again when traffic starts moving and so on. I would love to see someone test this, as I think it is a great feature. But it seems no reviewer ever tests this (in any car), so does it actually work? You are one of the best reviewers out there and possibly the only one brave enough to try this! You will be a legend if you do.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 года назад +1

      eC4 will be the same as the e2008 I reviewed a couple of months ago. Stop&go ACC is available on many cars. I see I will have to go more in depth next time I have a car with this feature.
      Because of my work I avoid traffic, and focus mostly on assist features on motorways.

    EcoLED headlight (more and more manufacturer wants you to believe that they're like the high end ones...)

      Actually I use the word "comfort(able)" 7 times in this review.
      Twice talking about the seats. Three times talking about this car's comfort in general. Twice specifically about the suspension, also referring to the same suspension setup in the C5 Aircross and C4 Cactus, and displaying the bloody animation to show how the flipping thing works. Hi Marek, would you say Citroen C4 is worth buying more than Peugeot 2008 or Skoda Kamiq? I had a test drive with all of them and Peugeot was the least ergonomic af all. Android Auto did not work properly, the screen was not intuitive, too much of cheap plastics. Kamiq is not very exiting to look at. But what bothers me with Citroen is it's ability to hold value. I'm afraid it will depreciate in value of all 3 the most. What do you think?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 года назад +3

      First of all, the C4 is a bigger car than the other two. It's more of a Karoq/3008 competitor. As for value, I guess it depends on how long are you planning to hold on to it. Over longer periods it doesn't really make that much of a difference. Also you should ask yourself, whether the money you're going to get back when time comes to sell is really worth your comfort and pleasure over a few years. These are not investment cars. They are people movers.
