I've been roofing about 40 plus years .. We used the Plumb roofing hatchet and nailed everything by hand .. When your hand nailing and you hit a knot like on shiplap, you'll know it....With a nail gun you won't know until you get on the ground and see all those "nail pops"from the shingle tabs not laying down where the nail didn't drive all the way down ... Or on a hot day , your more liable to over shoot the nail through the shingle because the shingles are soft from the heat ..My son and I have a family run roofing business , everything here on Texas Gulf Coast is pretty much hand nailed ,,,Especially when a windstorm wp-8 is required
Thanks for your reply, there are positives and negatives to everything. I also handnailed for years, and when I hit a not it would knock the whole not out and leave a huge hole needing to be fixed. The gun doesn't seem to do that. It all comes down to who is using the tool and how they use it. Keep up the good work and pass it down to the next generation, we need more honest roofers out here.
Interesting topic. I'm a carpenter not a roofer so I can't say, but it's interesting to read the arguments. I was once told a tale of two crews working on identical houses in a development. One was a an old school hand crew and they other used guns (this was when guns first became popular). They made a bet on who would win. Right away the hand guys started putting shingles down. The other crew complained and asked them to wait till they got their compressors and guns set up. The hand guys so no, that's part of the job. . In the end the gun guys won by 15 minutes. . I wasn't there but that's the story I was told
I agree, when the shingles are extremely hot you may have to lower air pressure for the gun. We have installed well over 25,000 roofs with zero issues caused because they were installed by a gun. The only thing I think shouldn't be nailed with a gun is the ridge cap over plastic vent. It will blow through
I’ve been roofing for 42 years. Air guns are the worse things that ever happened. They destroy the shingles. You’re inside a climate controlled environment showing your bogus demonstration. If it’s sunny and warm the nails shoot through. If it’s colder the air gun shatters the fiberglass around the nail. The common bound on the shingle is about 5/8s of an inch and nail should be in the middle of the bound. It never is. If the roof deck are boards and you hit a space that’s another problem. And that hockey tape Owens and Corning puts on their shingle is just a gimmick. Problems with air gunned don’t show up right away but they do show up it’s just a matter of time. All the manufacturers know this but sadly the roofing business is all marketing with most contractors using slave labor from third world countries
I respect your opinion, but I've been installing roofs this way for over 30years and at a volume you couldn't comprehend. We have never had issues because we used a gun. No gimmicks here, just ask our customers for the last 30 years!!!
Agree 100% , of coarse he shows the shingle they had to “fool proof” to try and make guns work properly and the tape kinda helps them get past their 5 year warranty but the roof should last the life their advertised for, guns have destroyed quality and that’s why I stay very busy doing roof repairs nowadays
If your shooting through shingles on a hot day. It’s possible you don’t know but the laborer should be asked immediately to turn the compressor regulator down.. for an experienced roofer this is 101 after you change the depth gauge on the gun.

It's better with a hammer ive roofed for 40 years i used nailgun to better have compressor set right or it will blow through
With the air set correctly I believe it's the installer that's more important than the tool.
