Hello, can you tell me what using a 8d ring shank nail placed at a maximum of 6 inches on-center spacing for edge and field nailing means?

Should these nails be visible to the homeowner under the eaves?

How far away from the bottom edge of the shingles are the nails placed. It looks like they are almost out from under the edge of the shingles on top. If too close wouldn't be more likely to leak, especially on a low slope like ours which is a 2/12. Thanks

Some parts of Florida 8-nail. The follow the original 4 nail pattern, just double up the nails about 1" apart on those spots.

I agree! We have our Florida Roofing License and I question the building departments that require that.

I am not a fan of the electric galvanized nails I think they rust and in my opinion you cannot use that nail anywhere near beaches or where salt is in the air.

Owens Corning suggests 5 nails in non Dade type areas.

Todd, yes and that's a great point. All the manufacturers have different nail patterns they suggest and it's vitally important roofers follow exactly what the manufacturers suggest so the warranties can be used in the event of a poor performing batch of shingles.
      Thanks for the input!

I'm doing a garage project now. Hammering by hand. Didn't make financial sense to purchase a gun for a one time project

It is definitely worth buying a gun for 100$-150.00.... You will literally finish 4x Faster!!! And you never know you might need that gun later on in the future!!!

Hey dude ,former renovation carpenter here from New Orleans area. I am going crazy watching allow these Mexican roofers ,they shoot 8 to 10 nails on every shingle. The extra nails are because they also nail the top of the shingle. You would think with that many nails you would never have a problem losing shingles from a hurricane. Not so at all you see not only are they putting too many nails they don't have a hammer on their side. To make up for when they nail in between the rafters and to keep the nail from sticking up they increase the air. Big mistake because now most of the nails are going if not all the way then most of the way through the shingles. I've been on many brand new roofs for complaints about shingles coming off. It's an unbelievable thing to see. One roof had 2 shingles facing down and I thought that was impossible. With the homeowner standing right there I pulled on one of the shingles and 10 shingles slid down. I had no idea what was the cause of this but after the 5th house I had to find out. I new it had something to do with these roofing guns since they were new at the time. I rode around in some neighborhood listening for that sound and heard it within 5 minutes so I pulled over and watched. The first thing I saw was the roofer that was nailing didn't have a hammer and I thought how could that be. I put 2 and 2 together and realized that they must have the air turned up too high. I have been watching these idiots now for over 20 years now and they still haven't changed. I could go on and on and now after hurricane Ida they just start all over again. One last thing before I go the last roof that I had to go check on was some kind of leak in the valley. I had to pull up some shingles to see what was causing the problem and thinking that I had seen it all I was shocked this time. There was no felt under the shingles or in the valley! I thought it might have been just a small spot for whatever reason but when I started pulling more shingles up to repair it I realized those idiots put a new roof on without any felt paper. The company that I worked for was called Paul Davis and everyone of those houses needed new roofs . I always wished I had told the homeowners but didn't for fear of losing my job. Se la Vie ( such is life )

It’s simple. 4 hand nailed roofing nails is all you need. Anyone that knows roofing at all know that air guns destroy the shingles. I know set the pressure right crap. Right. The sound of an air gun is actually.
BUTCHER BUTCHER BUTCHER BUTCHER. When you see a roof job going on stop and listen to the air guns. That’s exactly what they sound like because that is exactly what they doing to the shingle. Butchering them up. If you are going to buy a roof don’t let the contractor use air guns. Most contractors today aren’t roofers but people who are taking advantage of the illegal alien slave trade.
