    A better way is to divide your shingle is by six. And a better wait to cut your shingles is with an old set of tin snips. And when it comes to your overhang on the other end of the roof, used the Snips to scratch a line from underneath matching your rake overhang. Doing this saves scarring your knuckles and a straighter cut.
    I told my husband he should be teaching roofing and gutter installation, he's been doing this for over 60 years and when gutters were still wood. He used to make his own Cedar Shakes.

    Good job man! When i get to the end i'll flip a shingle around and put it flush to the rake starter and then cut it from the inside and flip it back around, i personally think it's a little easier then cutting at the rake shingle by shingle or snapping a line down it and then cutting, if it's a little short the rake will still be straight because of the starter and if it's a tad long just grab a cut off and sand paper it lol, nonetheless either way works.. keep up the good quality work bro!

    We just had an new arch shingle roof put on in September of 2020. There seems to be some type of machine press issue. I wish I could attach a photo. But some of the little squares on the shingles are falling probably 30-45 on a average size home. Our builder is offering to replace the whole roof but says it won’t actually hurt anything - more aesthetics....we haven’t even moved into this house yet. It’s almost ready and this was just discovered.

    • @Average_Roofer
      @Average_Roofer  3 года назад +1

      This is a manufacturing defect, and although isn’t 100% going to cause issues it could potentially shorten the life span of the roof.
      If they are offering to replace it, I would definitely have it done to protect the home in the long term!
      Maybe mention to your builder to contact the shingle manufacturer to report the defects and they may even help cover the costs.
      I hope this helps!

    When nailing a shingle at the edge of the roof, do you need to nail a certain distance away from the edge of the shingle to avoid water wicking under the edge and following the nail down?

    I remember the first time i worked on a roof, shingling. I went up and had my carpenter’s square with me. The boss said let me see that square and proceeded to throw it off the roof, then said loudly “We’re not building pianos up here”.

    Thank you.. I've been reviewing all your videos because I need to redo my shingles on my shed....I do have one question ? How do you decide on replacing your roofing sheathing ? I looked inside my shed at the roof sheathing and they are places that looked 'very dark or almost black ' looking' ...Thanks again for your videos..

    Unbelievable
    ..
    He's hand nailing.
    I love it. in this day and age he's seating those nails perfectly....hand nailing takes forever. that perfect nail position and nail head seating so well that he's acheaving is impossible with powered nailers. ..
    Powered nailers are 12 times faster... At least

    It would be really great if you could make a video on how to properly stagger architectural style shingles on the side of a cottage style roof. It seems that staggering them in 3 equals causes a lot of ends to align since the side sort of causes for lack of better term..a moving target.

    • @Average_Roofer
      @Average_Roofer  3 года назад +1

      I can definitely do a video on that. The best method is one full shingle, 2/3 of a shingle, 1/3 of a shingle and repeat

      Not all shingles lay that way. Theirs a 3 part step a 5 inch step or three tabs a 6 inch rack. Presedentual 3 part shingles have to lay out from left to rite and have to be laid exactly to the dimensions

      @@Average_Roofer did it in thirds like u suggested...worked mint! Thank you. Did my garage right afterward which was a regular roof and followed the manufacturers instructions.. and it wiorked great too. U really helped me out man! Thanks. Btw..i find way less waste on these new shingles. U can cut them any length and not notice it from the road. The old ones had to be cut in a specific spot. Anyhow.. thanks again from sudbury. (No leaks yet) 🤟🤟

      @@mikeclark5421 gd to know. Thanks. I guess i got lucky with these cuz cuttin them in thirds worked great for not having seams one on top of the other or nails too close to edge.
