Struggling To Grow? The Fleet Of Philippine Airlines In 2024

  • On the surface, not much has changed with the fleet of Philippine Airlines since our last deep dive into this carrier and its collection of aircraft. When we put out a video in October 2022 on this airline, it had 76 aircraft. Now, about one and a half years later, it has 79. Since the last Philippine Airlines fleet examination, we’ve seen the airline log its first post-pandemic profit. No doubt good news for executives working in Manila!
    At the same time, however, we’ve also seen reports that the airline was facing difficulties in finding available Airbus A350 or Boeing 777 aircraft to meet the post-pandemic demand. As a result of the struggle, it has placed an order for brand new A350-1000s while reportedly considering newer replacements for its A330 fleet in the next few years.

    PAL's biggest mistake was selling some of its A350s to Lufthansa. Because of this it uses ancient A330s with cramped interiors.

    Having to wait a little bit longer for planes is unfortunate, but at least the business is still going.

    I don't know but after recovering from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, PAL seems to be very cautious if not outright hesitant in expanding and modernizing its fleet. Hope they reconsider and add more A330 neos and A350's as well.

      On the case of A330neos it unclear weather the will pattern the configuration both after the A330ceos registered from RP-C8780 to RP-C8789 and RP-C8763 to RP-C8771, but the best configuration should be a 290-seater composed of 32 business class seats, 28 premium economy and 230 in the economy class

    It’s nice to see PAL featured.
    I hope that they start considering their next order to replace a few of their older A330ceos. (PAL has a mix of newer and older A330ceos)
    It’s rumoured that PAL is looking at both the A330neo and 787 for that. We should expect the orders to be announced in the next 2-3 years.
    Both the A330neo and 787 have their pros and cons in relation to PAL’s operations.
    The A330neo would be an obvious no-brainer if PAL seeks to continue with fleet commonality. The A330 is proven type and if anything, forms a major backbone of PAL’s international network, mainly for Middle Eastern and most of its Asia-Pacific and Oceanic routes. The neo shares a lot in common with the ceo, and PAL doesn’t have to spend a lot on retraining pilots and maintenance crews. The disadvantage is that the A330 is an older design and it wouldn’t be as efficient as the 787.
    The 787 on the other hand, would be a new type for PAL. Being a clean sheet design, It would allow greater operational flexibility as the plane would not only fulfill the A330ceo’s role perfectly, but its exceptional range and efficiency has the potential to allow PAL to expand into ultra long-haul markets in North America and Europe that dont see enough demand to justify using the 777 or A350. (Destinations like Istanbul, Las Vegas, and Rome) The disadvantage is that being a new type for PAL, the airline would have to spend quite a bit on retraining. The 787 does share a type rating with the 777… but PAL has a mostly Airbus fleet so it would factor in. In addition, PAL would need to hire new maintenance people specific to the 787, which would also cost a lot.

    Letting go of the A350s was definitely a hard decision for the management but it had to be done to keep the arline afloat. Unfortunately, the cabin experience on older aircraft (particularly the A330) is severely lacking especially compared to the competition serving the same routes where the A330 is deployed.

  • @bonelesswatermelon420

    The biggest thing holding back PAL imo is Manila's transfer/connecting flight facilities.
    Connecting via Manila is a nightmare, having to manually transfer your bags yourself (sometimes), no airside buses/people movers, and limited lounge/dining/shopping options.
    PAL also isnt helping itself with terrible scheduling, often resulting in 10 hour+ layovers.
    PAL would be in a stronger position if only they were able to capture the transit market too. Perhaps they should try working with the less congested international airports such as Cebu-Mactan and build better transit facilities and procedures there.
    PAL relies too much on the captive Filipino market to fill their seats for direct flights. They should really work on capturing the transit market too, especially the ASEAN-US market which is one of their relative strengths compared to other airlines in the region. Perhaps they can even try penetrating the PRC-Aus/NZ market too.

      Also their expensive ticket prices, a roundtrip flight to LAX with PR costs 52k in PHP while a flight with the likes of CI and BR is around 42-45k PHP. As for their new A350Ks... Some sources say they're planning a 10-abreast configuration for the economy class. Wouldn't that be crammed? 😕

    • @EpicThe112
      @EpicThe112 3 дня назад

      It is going to be cramped if you want something better than it you might as well fly via HND on JL A35K SQ 3-3-3 A359 via SIN KE once they have theirs ICN TPE BR and DOH QR. If you want the combination of the five star rating of Japan and Singapore Airlines Eva Air Korean Air and Qatar Airways with the mainline Fleet of Philippine Airlines your answer is Hong Kong Cathay Pacific B-LXx A35Ks 3-3-3 sitting in economy class which would be an improvement over PR RP-C3509 and upwards 3-4-3 Fiesta class Philippine Airlines branding for economy class. Mention this to a Hong Konger on how PR went 3-4-3 on A35K they told me it is cramped absolutely terrible for a plane that's supposed to be 3-3-3

    I have ridden PAL from MNL to TAG lately. On our return trip home, PR2777 was mega delayed, since it had to return to MNL for repairs. We managed to get home safely though. I've noticed too that the A320-214s need some good TLC, since most of them are 'middle aged'. I've even noticed scratches on the outside of the windows.

    As a Filipino, PAL will now expansion next year through additional aircraft like A350-1000, and soon for the Philippine Airlines will purchase Boeing 777X once New Manila Interational Airport completed
    In my opinion, PAL does not purchase A330neo because Cebu Pacific has already ordered. PAL still flying A330ceo. In 2015 or 2014: PAL President and CEO Ramon S. Ang was reported from ABS-CBN NEWS in Manila, PAL planning to buy Boeing 787's maybe -8, -9, or -10

    • @puertoprincesaplanespots3984
      @puertoprincesaplanespots3984 6 дней назад

      Competition with the same aircraft type doesn't mean PAL cannot purchase the A330neo. It is advantageous to the fact that type commonality means minimal expenditures for training not only for the pilot's transition from A330ceo to A330neo, but also for the mechanics with the A330type rating without hiring new mechanics for another type.
      Plus, the basis of your news where Ang is planning to purchase such aircraft is obsolete already and a new person took over PAL already. Plus Ang messed up aircraft purchase back then by fitting PAL with "low-cost" style interior.

    I hear that the A-380 might be making a comeback? If so I think it'll be prudent of PAL to purchase a couple, particularly as there's talk of a new state-of-the-art airport to constructed in the not to distant future. The land has already been set aside. Whether the original airport remains open is unknown.

    • @vincearvycabais7965
      @vincearvycabais7965 3 дня назад

      I'd beg to differ, actually. The A380 simply isn't an economical choice for airlines like PAL who do not operate on a hub-and-spoke mode (a good example of an airline which operates on a hub-and-spoke model would be Emirates, which operate 116 A380s). Current passenger numbers for PAL wouldn't justify the purchase as well, and then we've got the sheer cost to maintain the type, especially when compared to smaller twin-engine aircraft. Not a lot of airlines can justify the need for A380s, thus the reason why A380 production ended early.

    PAL livery is so outdated already. They should've grab the opportunity to market reemergence of their fleet service with a new logo and livery. Oh well, PAL is PAL, which is why Cebu Pacific is gaining more traction ahead than them...

    The Philipines depends on the US for support in the South China Sea, yet they buy predominantly Airbus planes. Boeing should refuse to supply them in the future. This should apply to all other airlines who buy Airbus as a matter of course.

    I don't like Philippine Airlines at all. Tired of delays and tired aircraft. Look at Nippon Airways, Korean Airlines, Japan Airlines excellent service and that includes ground staff.
