Talking about "freedom"... Around 16 years ago Air NZ "bullied" Kiwi Air (1 leased 757) out of the Trans Tasman market with a few of their old 737s, later upgraded to brand new A320s, painted in the livery of their creation, Freedom Air. Apart from the traditional routes between NZ and Australia, they offered Melbourne - Dunedin. The closest one can get to this timesaver these days is Melbourne - Queenstown. Hello, Air NZ, just in case you are reading this, 1 flight per week to Dunedin direct from Melbourne will be a great bonus in your network still. Noel, if ever you get to Dunedin, they've got a great train station and an even greater train trip from there. Taieri Gorge. Dunedin, worth a diversion from the traditional sightseeing in Aotearoa / New Zealand.

I recall flown twice to New Zealand from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. One to Christchurch in mid-2011, and to Auckland with stopover at Gold Coast Airport in early-2019. Both onboard Airasia X Airbus A330-300 (with 9-abreast economy seat). Depart on the night before, and landed in the afternoon later.
While the flights can be tiring, but i have to say that New Zealand might be the only country i would love to visit on over 10 hours flight. Perhaps Business Class on Batik Air 737 would be alright, but probably much better with economy on widebody A330 over the same seat on narrowbody 737 on that long journey.

Great review as always, Noel. Cheers!
Perth resident here with a wife from NZ. We've booked 3 flights from Perth to NZ and back with Air NZ since 2018. Only time we ever actually gotten an Air NZ airplane was the very first flight.. Return leg was with HiFly (absolute joke of a flight). Second flight we cancelled as soon as they told us the planes were not Air NZ and flew Qantas with stopovers in Sydney. Third time was Wamos Air - better than HiFly but still well below what's expected for Air NZ.
I'm glad Batik is also now flying this route and giving Air NZ a deserved kick up the bum. Next time we fly to NZ we'll gladly be flying Batik, because at least we know what we'll be getting when we book our tickets, unlike Air NZ and their track record of screwing over passengers flying to or from Perth.

I've purchased a dozen such flights in the past couple of years, and have another one coming up in June. It's such a non-issue for me.

First thing I noticed was why I often take row two or three, as row one can have that wall in front.
That not so good if tall like me.
Give me the extra legroom over the seat in front being a but closer.
In the older aircraft where there was no partition, the front seat used to be great.

A month ago I stayed two nights at the President Hotel in downtown Auckland - a whole section of the dining room was cordoned off for Batik Air. A fairly budget hotel for an aircrew, but I guess this is part of the reason for the lower fares compared with the competition. As always, I enjoyed this video. Thanks.

Does Malaysia use a different alphabet and numbering system ? Reminds me of the scene in "Flying High", when the Marshall is being asked for the location of the baggage trolley and by pointing to it with his light sticks, the 747 is diverting, crashing through the glass wall into the waiting lounge.

@@lzh4950 Is that so ? I haven't noticed that before. However, it might be easier for passengers getting guided into a terminal by letter identification first, followed by the number for the airbridge. Those working at the airport are more used to which airbridges are located in which terminal, therefore an order to show up at "Four-Six-Zero" will be equivalent to them as "Bridge Six-Zero in Terminal Delta". Here is my opinion on your choice of Airlines . Those seats were Premium Economy which is fine as long as you don’t think there Business, the trouble with that size airline in that physical location is you get mechanical issues replacement planes could be a lot of wasted time . I must say that Perth Lounge looked luxuriously empty and the terminal was far from busy which for me travelling NA and Europe is a forgotten luxury. Not sure I learned a lot and would you actually pick an airline based upon the Loo .

Great review Noel, Aspire Lounge in Perth is so good for plane spotting - only downside is that it has come at the expense of what was a really huge indoor public observation deck which is now significantly trimmed down! Interesting routing indeed Batik with KL - Perth - Auckland wouldn’t have an issue flying either segment (as there is some considerable cost savings over ANZ or Malaysia Airlines but not sure about doing the whole thing! Interesting enough Air NZ have been outsourcing the flight on and off over the last few years via a wet lease agreement with Wamos Air due to the global engine shortage they have been trying to free up some existing capacity for their 787’s at the cost of Perth. I flew WAMOS last year on the route, whilst the hard product is certainly lagging with the WAMOS A330 over the ANZ Dreamliner I thought the service and crew were excellent however with WAMOS. Batik fares are in any case usually a good cost saving over the Air NZ or Wamos flights so tempting to give them a try next time flying the route.

Flew with Malindo PER-KL on their older 737-800 back in the days of the Malaysian Formula 1. we were 3 hours late taking off as they failed a safety inspection and had too many damaged seatbelts, we lost our gate and had to bus out onto the apron. other than that they were ok.
