Well this was a surprise ! Did not expect to see my humble old GPz panels on the channel . I'm stuck for words , watched the vid with a tear in me eye seeing such a mesmerising craft ! I'm actually scared to touch them let alone fit them back onto the bike . Can't thank you enough for what you both done for the old girl !

Very nice. Would love to see the finished bike. I’m restoring two GPZ550’s myself. Love these bikes. Have two ZR550’s also same as my very first bike in 83 at 18😊

Good explanation of the technique to get a deeper shine. Have decided to freshen up my scruffy Carfix van over winter a couple of panels a time so may do this to get a better finish . thanks Tony

Great job Tony, we use the same direct gloss /clear finish on our budget resprays. always comes up perfect and will last longer in the brutal aussie sun.

This is bike enthusiasts gold on how to paint bike panels and what product to use. In my ignorance I used a base and clearcoat on old panels and got every problem you described🤣 in video, thanks for all the help keep them coming.
Ah man always terrible when that happens buddy but you learn from the mistakes and believe me we all make them fella , glad this helped you to buddy
Great video again Tony very interesting as I still want to try some direct gloss but still haven't got round to it due to me trying to sort out the water base side of things and deciding if a Mini Paint Scheme would be worth getting.
Anyway mate you did a fantastic job on those bike panels they came out like glass with the final coat of clear from Multi-Mix 2HS, I love this clear but like you I found you have to trust your finish and trust the clear will flow out to that glassy finish something which I struggled with when I first used it. I give it one fast close but closed coat then let it flash followed by a full wet coat then leave it, it will do the rest for you giving a great gloss at the end 👍

I mixed 10% clear into my single stage and used an extra 2.5% reducer and it came out awesome
Nice mate I’ve done that with black gloss before just to add that extra bit of shine
Fantastic finish 👍 not painted for years but I always used to overthin my clear to get it like glass, worked well. That stuff looks really decent though un-thinned.
Wasn’t there talk of banning 2k and going just water based at one point ?

In the USA it's called single stage
Very interesting technique, do you think two colour coats plus one clear is better than applying three coats of colour?
100% in all honesty as long as the colours covered fully then a coat of clear will give it some protection and give the gloss that bit more life too and a touch extra uv protection over the exposed colour too
Beautiful! Do you ever spray with your fluid control at the max?
Not unless it’s really hot mate we just don’t have the climate here in the Uk to run full fluid on guns mate

Great video, what's the downside of using 2k Gloss? Seems like it's quicker, cheaper and harder wearing.
So with base and clear the colours protected with 2k gloss like vans are painted in the colours exposed more to uv rays , washing road grime ect ect so although it’s as hard wearing the colour itself tends not to be as much , so hence for say a cheap repaint it’s ideal , or something like this to cut cost but to add that extra layer of protection we can clear it and it’s a quicker process

Yes and yes mate lol , you can get 2k gloss in any solid colour

What do you think about 2 coats of clear over 2 coats of dg? I’d be worried about going through that one coat of clear while denibbing and polishing
You could but you’d probably need to extend your flash off times for each coat that little bit more so say maybe 15 mins per coat

Nice job as always mate I think that green is much nicer than the old kawasaki green the two coats and then clear i always did it on bike panels like you say its extra protection I think bikes need it plus hows your health you sound a bit chesty like me im asthmatic and when its playing up get chesty just right before I get an attack sorry I'm drifting off subject a bit ha ha anyway its a very nice job mate

What it is the touch dry time for 2k direct gloss? I'm looking at hiring a booth but need to work out how long I would need it for.
depends on the gloss the hardener the temp alsorts mate
I'm still annoyed I didn't have the confidence to push on and do a clear coat on top of the paint when I did it a couple of months back. I got a nice finish on the direct gloss and was afraid to tempt fate with a coat of clear 😂
Lol well next time man take a test panel in along with you too and try on that if all goes well smash the rest buddy

My car was painted in 2k super red gloss ( toyota colour) a year ago. How do I go about putting a clear coat over this now to give it more protection primarily to stop the typical red fading which tends to happen?

You could wet flat or disc is back so it’s dull and keyed then clear it mate

When you say "direct gloss" is that the same as what I hear called "single stage" or is there a difference?
Yes mate it’s the same as it’s a one stage system colour and gloss in one basically

So you put on single stage urethane paint? (not base coat, clear coat)??
Then put on a regular clear coat from the base coat, clear coat stuff?
Can it be any clear coat you would normally use for base clear, as long as its from the same manufacturer like ppg?
Yes mate and doesn’t need to be the same manufacturer we can use any automotive clear over the direct gloss / single stage we use

I have an 81 Camaro Z28 I've been working on for 16 years (off and on). I did all of the body work but now it's been in the paint shop for the last 8 weeks or so (Windsor, Ontario, Canada.)
So yeah, it's been a minute or 2 since I drove that beast.

What's the advantage of doing this versus using base coat then clear?
Cost , time , paint coverage , reduced risk of reaction on old panels like these there’s quite a few tbh

It’s the little things like that buddy that can make the difference I guess I watch a lot of paint guys do there stuff for the same reason every now and again you pick up that one thing you wouldn’t have thought of lol

Base and clear, do you do 2 full wet coats?
One light coat then one wet coat mate it’s a good hs clear so you don’t need to overload it
@@TonysRefinishingTV I normally use either novol 590 or spectral 525-00 so be nice to find a cheaper option that's decent there both 1.5 coats
It’s well worth a try mate honestly just as I say don’t overload it , il be popping a review up on it soon

I’m sorry about that but it’s not always possible to do so I have two businesses to run and this channel to run and edit for as well as a family I can only do so much
