I’ve been watching your vids over the past 3 years, since I started setting up OBS and live-streaming on Twitch. I trust your reviews and appreciate your help. Thank you mate.
I'm using the light you've recommended in your new setup video. It's working nicely for streaming and it costed me 63$ approx'. Elgato is just the Apple of streaming: they also found a niche and are abusing on their pricing. I like their product but their brand is quite expensive for what it is.
Not sure if its been mentioned but you could actually just put both light activatoins into the multia-action option for elgato. I use multiaction buttons with 18 actions in them each.
I discovered using large soft boxes on the sides of my desk (one on each side) and use them only as a soft reflector. I use LED light panels and bounce the light off the shadow box to illuminate me while not casting any shadows behind me. Also reduces glare from my eye glasses. Key Lights would work nicely in this set up as well.
If you stream/content creation - the time put in with these is pennies on the dollar. With the integration, convenience and space saver makes it a no brainer if you have a stream deck already is a bonus. Great video!
I know you tried to justify the $200 price tag, but there is really no reason for these to be over $120 at the most other than the fact that it's Elgato and they know people will buy it. I'll just wait for the hype train to die down and grab them at a discounted price...
I agree. I think the reason for the cost is partially the software and integration. Still, I'm with you I think $200 is a bit steep for this, especially because I've got my light set up pretty well, which would mean reworking my setup with these new lights.
You an buy the Amaran M9. (A film/photographer light) for 75% less. It’s a smaller light, so the shadows are more harsh but it it is a great light if you don’t have a lot of space and need a good light
You don't need to pay $280 for a key light. Most lights don't cost that much unless you're really starting to go professional and need to worry about exact kelvin, or precise lighting control. Also don't be fooled by terminology. Key light just means main light. It will be your brightest light, but thats as much as it really means. That being said this is a really good and much needed product. Not surprised its $200 when its just come out, but realistically this should be $120 to maybe $150 considering you'll be wanting to buy 2. $400 for a set is pie in the sky for most people this targets, particularly when you can get reasonable alternatives for an absolute fraction of the cost.
Thank you for demoing how the lights look on their own without other lights, I think you're the only creator that did that and it helps a lot to see how well they actually work :)
whilst a good idea, I think for the price I would still prefer to stick to a lighting brand like aputure, for a somewhat similar if not the same price they are way more flexible in their use, however not everyone is tech savvy or have a use for them outside just streaming so I see what part of the market they fill, elgato is almost a one stop shop now joining corsair to get a stream off the ground
for the viewer a key light is perfect for the eye, but how is it affecting the feeling for the streamer? When I stream/play games I like the dark feeling for focus and some RGB lights but when they stream with key light it must be very bright for them infront of them on the desk if you understand me..
Im not sure. I was woundering the same. But when i read about them and see on the pictures on there website it seems to be 2 :) But im not sure... Mayby Gaming Careers can tell :) (Y)
I’m still contemplating wether to get the Elgatos green screen. Just seems convenient but I hate the price tags on all these good quality products lol . Daaamn you Elgato
Since these don't come in a 2 pack, do you think that just having 1 directly in front of you would suffice? as compared to one on the left and right of the subject? Thanks for the video, not many reviews out there on these lights.
Excellent tutorial. I have two Key Light Minis and one Key Light (as demonstrated in this video.) Beyond the great functionality and quality of the Elgato lighting products, I can also attest to the benefit that their "live" telephone technical support provides (at least here in the U.S.). I have had several opportunities to make use of it with great success. Just another reason to choose Elgato products over lessor priced "bargain" products. Hank
Nice lights but hard to justify over Aputure lights with hardware control and optional battery operation at a much cheaper price. Take 50 off and it'd be a better deal, feels like we're paying that for the software.
Elgato's USP is convenience. People pay a premium for convenience. That's why they can and do overcharge. I own an Elgato Stream Deck and Green Screen and a very much like both and didn't much paying the high price for them. Whilst the convenience of turning on a light with the Stream Deck is appealing, you can achieve this with an Alexa controlled mains plug and IFTTT. With regards to the softbox comparison, you need to consider that they are only around $25 including tripod and huge bulb...and they are EIGHT times bigger in surface area (and brighter) than the Elgato Key Light panels.
the key feature is the integration with the streamdeck. so slick and professional. you can have different settings for different games i.e battlefield with snowmaps gives more front lighting from monitors than darksouls. after first settup just ad a macro and youre one click away. instead of manual tuning on cheap lights. amazing product. alittle pricey but great.
Ok but I have one umbrella and one box light (like the ones you showed in the video) I have just enough space behind my desk to put the stand for the lights (its an almost triangle desk) Is it worth spending that much money buying two of these lights or should I just keep what I have?
I have a stupid question - What are those sound insulation thingies you have on your wall called? Thanks for a great channel, really happy i found this :-)
Hey...what about the smart people that are the 4th group you forgot to mention? I have one clamp light from Home Depot on a Tripod with a piece of paper over it and a clothes pin to hold it in place, and one china ball from IKEA hanging from a 3M hook on my ceiling. Both have the same LED bulbs in them, and both light evenly with one as a key and one as a fill for both me and my green screen. There are more than just these 3 groups of people and a DIY setup for streaming will allow people to focus on more important things such as audio and video quality. (Yes, lighting is important, but $200 for a single light is way over prioritizing. You can get a 5 pack of LED bulbs with every color on the planet for $100. Some quick clamp lamps from home depot, a clip and a piece of paper for a soft light effect, and you're golden in any color you wish. Thats just my take on the matter. but my question for you is what are you using specifically to get your camera clamped to your desk? I've been in the market for one rather than the tripod I have behind my desk holding my camcorder. Thanks!
Led bulb vs side lit led panel. Check out other side lit led panels and you find out they are not cheap. Thise should more be compared to eagleeye, aputure , stuff like that.
@@39zack Oh Im not arguing an LED bulb vs an LED Panel are comparable in price at all. There is a miscommunication with people attempting to stream and companies trying to exploit the naive tendencies of someone just wanting to grow with streaming. My statement is "You don't need to spend $200 for a single light to be a good streamer" while letting others know there are other options than no lighting, giant expensive kits, and expensive single lights. There are other options that are cheap AND effective. The panel is a bit high priced for my tastes, but it's near the average of where these kinds of lights are.
I'm loving how your videos are looking more professional with each video. Personally the Elgato lights seem to be a little overpriced, there are other lighting rigs that do all this for lower prices, also DIY options are definitely available. But if you're already serious and you have the money, be my guest, definitely efficiency is key.
Light isn't available anywhere anymore. Looks like all the vendors pulled the stock. Is there another alternative that could be controlled by the stream deck?
what i do is. i took the clip on work lights you use for working on cars. $4-5 each. i then got a light diffuser on amazon that fits over them 2 for $7. 2, 100 watt equatable, dimmable LED lights $7 each. i then got an extension cord. a wall plug and a light dimmer and 2 outlet boxes $10-$15. cut the head off on the extension cord, wire the cord into the dimmer, and to the wall plug. put in the boxes and secure. plug in the lamps to the outlet and boom, dimmable lights you can clip anywhere for roughly $45 for both. i keep the dimmer at the side of my desk and dim the lights down for low light and up if i am working on a project. extremely simple to set up. i use bright white. you could use warm if you need that. also you could maybe set up two dimmers if you like to dim them separately, but i find that unnecessary.
also if you want a flatter light system you can easily make one with ribbon lights. it may be a little more expensive just because the little dimmer units, 12v adapters, and the quantity and quality of tape lights you'd need. again really easy to wire up if you want. the benefit of that is that you can alternate the warm and cool white LED tape lights in the unit and dim each color up or down as you feel fit. it is also a little more complicated and involves the use of a soldering iron.
Another great video. The lights look good, being able to desk mount them is a great idea and the fact they work alongside the stream deck is awesome. The price is still pretty steep though for a single light unless you have some cash to burn for those additional features. I picked up 3 Bescor LED lights for £170 which are fantastic so essentially the same price for 1 would be hard to justify. It will be interesting to see how well these do and how they improve them moving forward.
if I am using direct ethernet for internet.... can i set up a wireless dongle just for the elgato key lights? or would setting up the wireless dongle force me to use wifi as opposed to ethernet for internet?
If Elgato really wants to shake up the market, they should release this exact product but with RGB. It would be really interesting to see what kinds of effects content creators think up, ex. Police lights.
