"[pocket watches] were more jewelry pieces rather than reliable time pieces". Some may argue that in the age of the smartphone it is mechanical watches like the Rolex that are the beautiful jewelry pieces. And in a cosmic irony the smartphone is more akin to the pocket watch in that respect.
So, a smartphone is the non-reliable jewelery and a mechanical watch is the real time pice? That could very well go beyond cosmic irony and still be right. It's miles more practical to glance at a watch than taking out a phone, turning the screen on (or waiting for it to) then putting it away again. In the end, the smartphone has become the modern pocket watch.

Thank You once again for a wonderful video. I love this watch, and loved it ever since it's introduction. It does make me happy. In the past, I have had a Submariner 114060 and a couple of Explorer models. And now a 1991 14060. All sold, or about to be, and I constantly wonder why. When this Sea-Dweller appeared, I knew that although I am not put off by the looks of a Rolex dive watch, I often find them a bit mundane and lacking in frivolity. When I see this watch, that one can have the best of both worlds, practicality and frivolity, in a delightful mix. I have never, not in my entire life, been very sensible or practical. And this watch definitely brings out that side of my personality! Regardless of what others might think.
It like he said, you can do it because it's never going to do what it's designed for, so make it elegant. In the end it's what the watch represents not what it will every do.
The number of people on the planet that need a 1200m dive watch is so tiny, it is obvious that is not the market. Rolex, imo, is the only company that does two-tone watches well. That is a wicked good looking watch.
If you can, special order it from Rolex with the diver’s extension since it is not automatically manufactured with the watch. Not that you are ever going to use it, but because you can if you wanted to.

It’s simple. What made these watches cost so much is the dealers making the prices high. The AD says it’s hard to get the watches. So they inflate the prices. Now you the consumer wants one. And you will pay.

But you're going to be paying upwards of $18,000 for this watch now. The prices are climbing.I had a chance to buy an old gold Daytona with the green dial for $33,000 last year I believe what 2 years ago.I'm kicking myself in the ass now some people are asking anywhere from 70 to $100,000 for it now
After seven years of happy ownership I recently sold my Submariner ceramic (116610LN) on Chrono24 for $1,000 more than I paid for it new in 2012. In turn, I purchased a new 904L Sea-Dweller 43mm (126600). I absolutely love it and, at age 66, expect to own it until I die. My AD did offer me the SD43 in steel/gold but I turned it down. I’m firmly of the opinion that Rolex divers should be entirely 904L. Two-tone doesn’t suit this model as well.
I have a GMT Master II Black, When I hold it up to a frozen frame of the SeaDweller and they look so much alike. I know they are wildly different but still so much alike. My question to myself is do I dare get a Two Tone watch. I have until my Birthday to decide. Great thought provoking Video on many levels my friend.
Robert Sullivan I see you read my post so you have my opinion. You might consider doing what I did: Get a “Classic” Rolex model (Datejust or Day-Date) in two-tone, and get a sporting Rolex in 904L. Or consider a gold dress watch (like their Cellini model or, like I did, a Langë) along with a steel sport watch.
Your comment suggests that you're into the dive watch aesthetic but cannot justify buying a similar looking watch. So why don't you take a look at Omega Seamaster or maybe a dive watch from another brand?

Aditya Udhani thanks! And let’s face it, we should all come together and enjoy this wonderful hobby, sharing our passion for these amazing mechanical marvels! Doesn’t matter if we prefer Rolex, Omega, Breitling, hand wound, automatic or quartz (😱there, I said it!). Let Trump, Brexit or our favourite football team divide us (the last one is a joke obviously!), but not our shared passion for watches!
You want a watch to wear while checking out super expensive yachts in Monaco? You get a Rolex. You want a watch to wear while you actually go diving? You get a DIVE COMPUTER. Honestly, nobody relies on these things for diving anymore.
2-tone isn't my cup of tea. Too tacky for me. This watch looks beautiful. I even like the cyclop. Critics are entitled to have their opinions. No one really cares. If you love it and can afford it, just buy it. If you don't, go buy another one. Bad taste's always someone else's.
Was at my AD today in Toronto suburb and this watch was in display window. Available to anybody to grab. For some reason no one wanted it.. Not saying it is bad, it is actually gorgeous. I am perfectly happy with my Sea-Dweller 16600 though. Love that watch. Cheers!
@@mikegeary2112 that is just dust and stuff. my seadweller and submariner have this "issue" they are both used as beater watches and i keep cleaning the area around the cyclops. From the description: "At some point, these two worlds, form and function, luxury and practicality, collided, and it’s brought us to this: the Rolex Sea-Dweller 126603 in steel and gold. Is that a big mistake?" It's not that hard, mate.
Well, as far as im concerned, I think its GORGEOUS! I’ll take this one over the submariner any day of the week If you can afford it then go for it...it’s really that simple! Why should you drive a BMW if you can afford a Rolls Royce! 😜😉
It’s all hated by the masses till John Mayer says it’s the next big thing. Then rich people whose collection only consists of brands like Rolex, AP, PP AL&S and FP Journe and recently grand seiko, run down to Mayers and Tourneau to claim they love it and need it 😂
I think Rolex needs to change it’s thinking in regards to sports promotion. Make luxury watches out of premium metals by all means but also make stainless steel pieces more affordable and more available than they currently are.
Pocket watches weren't robust, or accurate? I have to strongly disagree! American watch makers (Waltham,Elgin, Illinois, Hampden, Rockford,South Bend, Howard, Columbus, etc) literally made a whole industry off of providing incredibly durable , robust, and very accurate pocket watches for a hundred years. And they were technological leaders , not just watches based on "tradition"....railroad standards by 1900 required double roller, at least 17 jewels, breguet hairspring, compensation balance, and accurate to 30 seconds a week! And they had to be robust enough to withstand railroad work (not a clean or kind place for watches) and be easily serviced and fixed. And pocketwatche kept being produced through the 1950s and 60s even after wristwatches took them over , because pocket watches were still more robust, accurate, and reliable. Good watch making didn't start with wrist watches, or with rolex.
These steel and gold watches don't need gold on the bracelets. Just the bezel, crown and hands, and maybe indicies etc. If this Rolex had a plain steel bracelet. it'd be so much cooler. It'd be even cooler without the date or cyclops.
We know you want more watches…. click here: linktr.ee/watchfinder

Doesn’t matter if we prefer Rolex, Omega, Breitling, hand wound, automatic or quartz (😱there, I said it!). Let Trump, Brexit or our favourite football team divide us (the last one is a joke obviously!), but not our shared passion for watches!
This is one of your most awesome video to-date. 👍 I salute you.
could you kindly review the Zeitwerk (decimal) Minute Repeater?
Would you please make a video about the casio 91w?
I am new her but this channel is the best watch channel a ever look at. you are so good at this.
My favourite Rolex, got it in May 2022.
You want a watch to wear while checking out super expensive yachts in Monaco? You get a Rolex. You want a watch to wear while you actually go diving? You get a DIVE COMPUTER. Honestly, nobody relies on these things for diving anymore.
Pardon my ignorant question. How does gold do 4000ft under water?
Geniusclicks gold does a lot better than we would at 4000ft!
Geniusclicks Gold does not corrode are all, so it does superbly.
Most ADs have more staff in the stores than watches
2-tone isn't my cup of tea. Too tacky for me. This watch looks beautiful. I even like the cyclop. Critics are entitled to have their opinions. No one really cares. If you love it and can afford it, just buy it. If you don't, go buy another one. Bad taste's always someone else's.
Loving the car analogies 👌
Was at my AD today in Toronto suburb and this watch was in display window. Available to anybody to grab. For some reason no one wanted it.. Not saying it is bad, it is actually gorgeous. I am perfectly happy with my Sea-Dweller 16600 though. Love that watch. Cheers!
You sir make people happy, well done sir.
I dont understand why Rolex keeps avoiding the 42mm for their watches? Would have been perfect.
damn those micro shots don't do the brand well, Quality is definately not the highest standard at Rolex
I think they move a little fast for the frame rate in video too.
It looked like crap IMO. What was that junk next to the cyclops?
@@mikegeary2112 that is just dust and stuff. my seadweller and submariner have this "issue" they are both used as beater watches and i keep cleaning the area around the cyclops. My AD told me its from the glue they use for the cyclops as its apperrently really difficult to clean it of during production
Thats why GS' finishing is stomping them to the ground
I’ve seen Pateks and A Langue Sohne watches with worse quality on the dial
what is the music ? thks
I literally have no idea what this guy is rambling on about.
the more you watch all kinds of watch videos (haha watch pun) the more everything will start to make sense eventually
From the description: "At some point, these two worlds, form and function, luxury and practicality, collided, and it’s brought us to this: the Rolex Sea-Dweller 126603 in steel and gold. Is that a big mistake?"
It's not that hard, mate.
Well, as far as im concerned, I think its GORGEOUS!
I’ll take this one over the submariner any day of the week
If you can afford it then go for it...it’s really that simple!
Why should you drive a BMW if you can afford a Rolls Royce! 😜😉
I've got both and both feel special when i wear them to match an occasion. They feel just as special as my daytonas.
This guy is great at presenting a watch
It’s all hated by the masses till John Mayer says it’s the next big thing. Then rich people whose collection only consists of brands like Rolex, AP, PP AL&S and FP Journe and recently grand seiko, run down to Mayers and Tourneau to claim they love it and need it 😂
Mayer is even more over-rated than Rolex imo.
Yet still a must in any watch collection.
I don’t get the title , someone explain please
What would be the absolute best /cheapest budget automatic watch?
Those criteria are somewhat contradictory. Try a Seiko 5.
Hamilton khaki
Is budgetest a word? Lol ...what's hands down the best bang for buck automatic under $1000?
can u please review any gevril dive watch...thnku
That GT 3 RS analogy was incredible
You must realise that though gold is softer than steel but it is not so soft that it breaks easily.
These steel and gold watches don't need gold on the bracelets. Just the bezel, crown and hands, and maybe indicies etc. If this Rolex had a plain steel bracelet. it'd be so much cooler. It'd be even cooler without the date or cyclops.
please review the oris diver 65 with bronze bezel
id wear this at the yacht show over a two tone yacht master or a sub... its just got a way more superior look for a boating crowd.
As usual a most brilliant review - thank you so much! 😎👍😎
I love the expectations of ourself part at the very end. Is that written out anywhere I would like a copy.
Couldn’t agreed more - well done 👍🏻
yes , it has to have a nice tint of navy blue and rosegold ..
No
2 tone SD is gorgeous.
Don’t care what the haters say, yellow gold BELONGS on a Rolex.
@James Tudor oh the 2 tone holds value alright. People just overpay for steel due to herd mentality, which the Crown plays out beautifully.
And this is why I love Rolex
A manual 993 carrera, driving with a 1665 great white... Enough!
