      Toss up between this and the Gazebo scene for me... They were SO in love💖
      I listened to a 2005 chat between Christopher and Julie and he said that the laedler was the scene " we realised we were in love" ... Did he mean the Captain and Maria or..??? . I like to think it was a hidden message or Freudian slip... or even an admittance ! 💖He has admitted he had a huge crush on Julie, and I think somewhere she said the same. Sigh...

    • @juliasmucker
      @juliasmucker 3 года назад +22

      My favorite is still the scene with the pink lemonade, where the children are devastated that Maria ran away and the captain is working hard at avoiding his own feelings by deflecting every mention of her to this funny-looking beverage: "not too sweet, not too sour." But this one is right up there! The moment where they lock eyes and then step back in shock as the Landler ends - they could have burned the house down with those sparks.

    • @monyana9620
      @monyana9620 3 года назад +14

      @@juliasmucker I agree, that scene is brilliant, because as he's trying to deflect his feelings, there is still hurt and confusion there even though he's not shouting it to the world, its obvious how he feels. It really adds to the moment. That scene always made me want to try pink lemonade though 😂

As he's turned away and moving away his face begins to fall and he looks WORRIED and _SAD_ for a moment as he reaches back to find her hand, worried it won't be there. Then right as he finds her hand, he smiles like he's trying to hide his surprise, and is confident again.
    for her in the beginning, As he's turned away, she's conflicted/curious about reaching out to him, slowly moving her hand forward to meet him, but she's watching his face. and once their hands touch, she takes on a neutral mask/straight face, trying not to meet his eyes.
    And then their eyes lock and it's all over.

    I love this scene so much. At the beginning of the dance, it’s purely for fun and their smiles are full of excitement and joy. As the dance continues, they get more serious and look into each other’s eyes more. This is the most physical contact they have had since they met, and they both begin to realize that maybe the attraction is mutual. When she pulls away from him once they stop, he looks at her with a confused and longing look and she simply stares back, not knowing what to say. When they notice she is blushing heavily, she tries to excuse it away, but the Captain already knows that he affects her. His smile when he realizes makes my heart skip a beat.

    I watch this movie every Easter and this year it hit me hard: the Captain comes outside to see Maria teaching his son to dance this traditional folk dance, right? A dance surely his wife would’ve been teaching their children had she been alive. I can’t imagine how that must have made his heart feel. It’s no wonder he wanted to jump right in and experience that kind of intimacy again. The way he dances with Maria really goes to show how much he’s opened his heart to love and it just makes me want to cry happily 💖

      A good friend of mine and her boyfriend helped me once with preparing a dinner. I didn't know him very well or long, but I did know that his mother passed away when he was young. I had to whip some cream and I asked him if he wanted to do it. He said that he would, but that he didn't know how. I taught him. He said: my mother had tried to learn me once (or something like that). I immediately realized that it must be a very special, intimate moment to him, and he let me in in that pain/remembrance. Wow.

    Maria starts dancing with Kurt as a governess, she teaches him practically. With the Captain she cannot hide behind the masque of the teacher, she is not anymore a trainee nun, and I think she gets confused, what is her role NOW ? what is she doing there dancing with her employer, the distinguished naval officer dressed in his formal suit and father of the children she takes care of? She is definitely in awe of him! All her life she has learned to respect and revere and offer. She looks at him solemnly, shyly, she does not know how to behave, he surely honours her by offering his hand to dance with her. She surely admires him but now the roles are completely different. He is a man and she is a woman, should she look around or at him but she cannot look at him as she feels weirdly. She tries decently to act her role in the dance BUT the emotions start to blow her heart and mind as the dance changes style from distant and theatrical to a growing attachment, proximity and intimacy. The distance between them as they dance in the beginning favors her in her effort to hide her confusion but in the middle of the dance it gets more and more difficult for her. The Captain, the employer, the father is such A MAN, he looks at her sooo calmly, peacefully, decently. He is focused on her as a true dance partner should be. When the dance changes style from thetrical to intimate and face-to-face and eyes-to-eyes, at first the Captain offers her his hand, she grasps it understanding the following growing closeness and feeling bewildered, whereas he smiles slightly, yes he is building a sentimental interaction and he is succeeding, she responds. At the final scene of the dance, because of the intimate eye contact, the closeness of the bodies, the moonlight, her mind just blows off! and gets red, she now gets the hint that he clicks her sexually, as a man. She is in love with him. Now she feels wonder, what is going on? she needs time to realize her emotions. And get paralyzed, she cannot dance anymore, She covers her cheeks when Louisa tells her that she is red, she apologizes that she is not accustomed to dancing, again she tries to cover things up and hide. He looks at her in wonder, why did she stop, did he make some mistake? he tries to understand...and when she says that she is not used to dancing, then he finally understands, she has fallen for him!!
    For me, it is the most romantic dance scene ever filmed!!

    I'm 38 and this movie has always been and always will be my favorite. When I was little, my grandmother used to put it on for me every time I came over. This was when it was on VHS and you had to put the second tape in right after she goes back to the Abby. I know every word. This movie started my love of musicals and made me fall in love with romantic movies. It's amazing that a movie made 20 years before I was born can have such a huge effect on me. This is my all time favorite scene, along with the garden scene where he tells her that he missed her. Lord, they don't make movies like this anymore.

So much attention to detail, every little thing planned out - costumes, choreography, casting is a big one. Scenes like this have more depth and tell more of a story without a single sexual reference then Hollywood seems to be able to do these days.
