    at first I thought this was going to be just a regular (but fun) video on AVUS, but wow, I did NOT expect you to actually go there in person and show us the remnants of the unfinished South Turn! That's amazing!

      Given the circumstances I'd say they did a pretty good job preserving at least some important parts. Shame the banked corner couldn't at least be partially preserved but it is what it is.

    I drove along the AVUS' straights just a month ago. It astounded me that my friends aboard the car weren't annoyed at all by me letting the motor racing history nerd hang out for three minutes per straightaway!

    So awesome to see this highspeed wonder. I love that they build a scale model next to the track to work from. Incredible that it's still there and some parts still in good condition.

    As a local, driving on the AVUS fairly regulary, i am always conscious about the history of this place. But still i learned new things about it in this video, which is really quite impressive. especially the fact, that there is the banking for the Südschleife.
    Too bad i'm too young to ever been there for DTM, my father has been there in 94 or 95 for one of the last races.

    Great informatve video. When I visited Berlin from the UK in 1992 I hired an Opel Astra and drove the 2 remaining lanes of the AVUS. 20 years later I took my Toyota MR2 for a few laps of the Nurburgring. The only race circuits I have ever driven on. I have walked the Brooklands bankings though.

    I'm still awestruck by Denis Jenkinson's report in 'Motor Sport' of the 1959 German GP at Avus, that I read in 1959 as a ten-year old. I still remember the newspaper photos of Jean Behra's Porsche going over the top of the North Curve banking during the supporting sports car race and reading how he died when, flung from the car, he hit a redundant WW2 flak gun emplacement.

    Brilliant video - I learnt many things that I didn’t know before. Generally articles and videos about AVUS focus on the banked North Turn, there don’t seem to be many images of the original South Turn, fewer still of the unfinished banked South Turn. It’s astonishing that after 85 years there are still visible remains and you can even see this on Google Earth. One question - had it been completed, would the banked South Turn have been identical to the banked North Turn? Thank you so much for producing this.

    • @BSport320
      @BSport320  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks a lot! The new south turn would have been lower but with larger diameter than the north turn, so overall much faster than the old one. So that would have possibly increased average speed to more than 300km/h.

    • @hedleyyou
      @hedleyyou Месяц назад

      Another question - does anything remain of the hairpin used for the 1959 German GP? I used to be able to see (on Google Earth) one of the two concrete “lay-byes” either side of the dual carriageway which together formed the South Loop on the shortened circuit. I can’t see that on current Google Earth.
