Porsche and Audi's Talladega speed records

- The Talladega superspeedway is one of the fastest race tracks in the world. The track usually sees all sorts of NASCAR stock cars racing on it. But in the 70's and 80's both Mark Donohue in retired CAN-AM legend and Bobby Unser in a souped-up family 4 door saloon with Transam and IMSA ambitions went to the track to try and set some records.

For those who don't know, Talladega Superspeedway is currently the only permanent oval race track in the world with a bank angle steeper than 32 degrees that still sees active car competition to this day. While other tracks such as Monza are steeper, their oval layouts are no longer in use or the track as a whole has been abandoned.
For even more perspective. The banking on the zandvoort circuit in the netherlands is only 18 degrees. And ive driven on that myself and it already felt like driving up a wall. So imagine what talladega is like being almost twice as steep.

You grab the plastic top off your Igloo cooler and use it to sled down the banking.
Bring a first aid kit.
You just about need a rope to assist you up them they are that steep. Daytonas the same.
Winchester Speedway in Indiana actually has banking even higher than Talladega, at a current 37 degrees, though before it was paved, the banking supposedly got as high as 45 degrees.
I believe that Slinger Speedway in Wisconsin is also 33 degrees
For further perspective, elevation at the bottom of turn 1-2/3-4 is 26ft below the top of the turn. The track is only 48ft wide. The banking is insane.

they actually had to call him up to coach walter rohrl on how to drive up pikes peak. imagine that. a WRC champion needing a driving lesson

Mark Donohue was a different breed of driver that's sadly lost today in most forms of motorsport today

@@thethirdman225 thats the PR number, The car had a Peugeot engine and Peugeot was about to release the new Peugeot 405 so they agreed to lower to number to 405 kmh so it could be used in marketing and stuff. the actual speed they went was 407kmh. they might have even gone faster in the practise sessions but the radar gun the ACO was using was acting up so we'll never know.
@@thethirdman225 I literally visited the Le Mans museum today and the description plate of the WM said it was 407. The ACO is wrong now?
@@mintgoldheart6126 The ACO owns and operates the speed trap. They also publish the figures each year, which is where I got the 405 figure.
I always find Porsche/Audi's story in the US motorsport scene fascinating.
same, I mention that audi's story was just the beginning but come to think of it, the porsche penske bond was created with the 917/30 and still lasts to this day with the LMDh car.

Talladega is 2.66 miles long with 33 degree banking compared to Daytona at 2.5 miles with 31 degree banking.
Talladega used to have a road course configuration that was used to host races from 1969-1989. Today the road course is still there, but the connection from the speedway to the road course is gone.

I never knew about the Audi attempt. I do wonder, if NASCAR didn’t have the ban on foreign makes, if Audi would have had an entry in that time period, given they were doing all sorts of stuff in America.
Did NASCAR actually have a ban, or was there just no one who met the homologation rules? I can see why NASCAR didn't want to be like IMSA with lots of types of engines and a ridiculous number of rules to try to make them all work.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453Don't think there was a ban per se, since in the very early days of NASCAR you'd find just about everything competing, Jaguar of all makes even has a NASCAR race win to their credit. But by the 1960s it just consolidated itself to all teams running big displacement American V8s for competitiveness. By the 1980s the Gen 3 Cup cars were basically spec chassis with a 358ci OHV engine and "stock" body templates. Audi would have never attempted to compete in NASCAR as they were all about demonstrating the performance of their homegrown I5 Turbo and quattro combination anyway.
Its an interesting idea, the aerodynamic Audi 100 and Mercedes W124 bodyshells might have made for some very competitive machinery
@@mrspandel5737 That's what I thought, that it was largely lack of a suitable engine that kept foreign marques out.
It would have been interesting to see foreign marques enter back in the day. I'd add the Toyota Soarer and Nissan Leopard as potential entries.

There is no Avus Ring in Hockenheim. There is the AVUS, pretty much a highway that was build for test and racing purposes, which is/was located in Berlin and there is the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim in the south of Germany.

Umm slight correction at 4:41 ... Dega is bigger than a 2.5 mile track (that's Daytona's length) Talladega is 2.667 miles in length. 500 mile races at Daytona are 200 laps. At Talledega it's only 188 laps. The mph & kph records are likely correct. Woops somebody already posted this, but I didn't read ALL the comments.
Yup. Someone else pointed that out earlier. I legit said the daytona number instead of the talladega number. Honest mistake.
Rusty Wallace took off his restrictor plate at a test and hit 228 mph at Talladega.

I could be mistaken. I think rusty Wallace took an un restricted nascar around there in 229 range? I think it was in the early to mid 2000s
I though Bill Elliot had that record...but maybe his was just a qualifying lap in 1987?

I always wonder.... How fast would a modern IndyCar be able to lap Talladega? I don't mean a race, God no, that's just ridiculous, but just set a lap. Because I mean.... If they can do 230+ mph on Indianapolis, which is not exactly the best track for sheer high speed numbers, how fast would it go on Talladega? I dare say 240, perhaps even close to 250 mph. Then again, I perfectly understand why it has never been and likely will never be tried. Probably one of the few things I really think an autonomous car would be great for just trying out things that are just far too dangerous for any human being to try.
Probably not much faster than Indy. They’re already wide open around Indy and have basically minimal downforce. Even at Indy the turns drag them down a bit. So, unless they turn up the power, or reduce the drag they’re already basically at the top speed the car can go.
Current IndyCars are limited by budget reasons. The former CART was faster. The fastest lap ever in a closed track was set by Gil de Ferrán in 2000, at Fontana, and is 241 mph and change.
I may be a NASCAR fan but something tells me that since the sport made a positive impact at Le Mans, other car companies, such as Audi and Porsche, need to be in NASCAR! What do you guys think? If you don’t like the idea, that perfectly fine. I was just thinking that NASCAR needs more viewership if it was to stay afloat. Maybe that’s just me.

I think it'd be awesome to see other manufacturers join NASCAR races, same with other racing series. Even if it's just for fun or for comparison, it'd be cool to see.
Why would European companies want to join a racing series which has absolutely no relevence to anything that they make? The technoogy involved is somewhat aged and the body style is unlike anything they sell. NASCAR is a series which is a backwater so far as the world outside the US is concerned.
NASCAR might need companies from outside the US to widen its popularity, but the reverse is not true.
The only foreign carmaker interested in NASCAR is Toyota and they are already in. Neither Porsche nor Audi are going to invest in a local series. The 917/10 and 30 were emergency projects because they had lots of cars which could no longer race in Sports car races.

4:43 Sorry to be nit-picky, the Track length isn't 2.5 miles long, that is Daytona, Talladega is 2.66 miles in length not 2.5.

yup, i most likely used the actual daytona number as i had that open in a tab as well.
@@jackcphelps that's also an honest mistake. i even have it in the script as "king of the mountain". yet i still said "king of the hill". i guess its cause the latter is a more common sentence. its just hardwired into my brain like that.

Well they scrapped the le mans hypercar in favor of F1. So the chances of them getting into nascar is about 0.0001%

Whenever I look around at the cars on the road you just don’t see many Audi’s.
I’ve lived in suburban Atlanta, Miami and in my travels.
It’s a fantastic, top tier quality car but Americans never got the email I guess.
Last few years I’ve mentally noted the amount of Tesla’s in Fort Lauderdale. They are EVERYWHERE!
Audis are great, until stuff starts breaking. They’re difficult and expensive to work on. Packaging is very tight and often requires a lot of disassembly to do things that should be pretty simple.
What didn't help is that Audi never thought their performance line would sell in the U.S. (not sure why). We didn't start getting RS variants until the 2000's and then we never got all of the RS's.

Dont know where u are lookin in ATL...but there are plenty of Audis...they stick out like sore thumbs because Audi drivers as a whole...are some of the worst drivers out there. They seem entitled to every dumb driving move they make.

that was impressive but it pales in comparison to todays NHRA 11,000 horsepower top fuel cars. they reach a top speed of 338+ MPH in 3.6 seconds, going only 1000 feet!!!
Would be cool to see what a V10 Formula 1 can pull off! The new Hybrid F1 Cars could also pull one but i am not shure about the Top Speed
Theres always gear ratios to adjust for top speed.
F1 is not optimized for top straight line speed but for turn speed. Today's F1 cars have horrible drag coefficients but they turn faster than any other land vehicle.
Talladega is 2.66 miles (4.280 km), not 2.5 miles (4.023 km).

its ALL WHEEL DRIVE.... real 4wd (4x4) is RWD unless engaged in hi or low
sadly they pretended it was poland . . rous !! sadly the first gps in these cars only went east . .they just kept saying they needed more room . .
