I am a designer who has hung up her measuring tape. I just went through a complete kitchen remodel and the process was interesting , (being on the other end of designing - I was the client). I had no less than five designers to my home for an interview. They were all amazing people, men and women, and I appreciated their time, (they all charged for the consult). The most interesting designer charged a flat fee for a complete design of my kitchen that included lighting, appliances, counter tops...everything. She and her team, (who all came out to the property), talked, took notes, took photos, asked so many questions (!), and asked if we could sit "In my favorite room" to discuss plans. In my favorite room they learned about my design personality and how I like to use my home. Now for the price...$3,000 for three complete plans with renderings and shopping lists. I would then take those plans and find a contractor to complete the job, (actually I would contract it because that's what I do, or did). Each plan ranged in design elements and prices, (mine were ranging from 125k - 250k). That was such an amazing designer/client experience. Plot twist, I ended up designing my own kitchen. I couldn't help it. But, the experience is one I would consider again. With plans in hand I could move through the project picking and choosing the elements that I truly desired. Or, just go completely with what was presented. (My finished kitchen btw is pretty amazing.) : )
Great vlog Rebecca. We used an interior designer for the fist time last year to help us renovate our formal back lounge. We were really happy with the process and the end result. Our designer had a degree in interior design and also lectures in it at a college. She came recommended and was very professional and pleasant to deal with. She did all the things you mentioned a good designer would do. She measured, took notes, gave us options and saves us so much time in sourcing furniture and pieces. We will definitely be using her again for some other areas of the house. We in turn out her in touch with some good quality, reliable trades people who she has subsequently used. Definitely get recommendations and view their work if you can.
Awww I found the world's best interior designer and that's Rebecca....I live in Australia and as a member of the design session paid for 1 hr zoom consult call albeit it being at 3.00am in the morning here. Rebecca assisted us in changing our floor plan to be more practical now I'm awaiting for the architect to approve of our changes before we proceed with Rebecca to assist the family and I with the next stage ( we need to meet some of the Australian regulations about windows, doors etc.....can't wait and for our 2nd call to happen. Rebecca made 100% common sense than what our architects provided us at a much ore expensive rate. Rebecca is the best and thank you, Rebecca....thank you..❤❤❤❤❤🙏
Rebecca I have followed you for many years. The last couple of years I have felt less enthused and excited after watching the Design Sessions and your social media posts. Today I see you again as you were when you were able to capture my imagination and inspire me. You come alive for me when you are working with clients directly. Your energy is amazing and I am so excited to be feeling this again. 😊
Do you recommend requiring the designer to carry and present you a certificate of insurance. While I hope the homeowner has home insurance, I would prefer not to file a claim for negligence on the part of the designer or subcontractors he or she hire for the project. Also how would you handle making sure those contractors have the proper license, permits, and references because I’ve heard of nightmares? Maybe you could do a part 2 video 😃
From the UK I actually used an in house designer at Woods of Harrogate who have done a yummy job for us on a full house refurbishment.Stuck to budget and listened to our ideas a dream.
I've had terrible experience(s) with interior designers, first they terribly over charge you for everything. They may have the experience but their egos are less than desirable. I will not utilized them again -- I am learning from the experts from youtubes and others while becoming my own interior designer. My home looks absolutely beautiful.
Great tips Rebecca! I’m not an interior designer but I love home decorating and designing, the minute I walk into a home, any home, my brain automatically rearranges everything…😂 I guess it comes naturally, however, I am going to take some classes on how the business works so I can start doing that when I retire in less than a year. This will be my retirement job that I love to do. For me is more a hobby than work. Any more tips from you would be great! 🥰
Oh Rebecca, THANK YOU. You always seem to know what we are looking for a needing to learn in our life. Wish I had found you 50 years ago. Can't wait to go back and watch and learn and USE so many of your lessons. PS. I am now working on my closet - thank you for your jewelry wall idea!!! Have a great day.
Just when I buy my first house the one interior designer I would love to hire has entered into a new operating space in this season of her life. You are truly a master at what you do. Thank you for always seeking to elevate our thinking.
What great insight and as a fellow designer who doesn’t have a degree it’s a confidence booster to know my initial client meeting is very similar. ( however I never charge for the initial consultation). Client never will hire just from seeing a portfolio. They want a sneak peak of your design ideas as how it will pertain to their project. One of your best videos ever!
12:10 You are absolutely correct! Once the artist study your styles and personality and they exhibit an authentic gift... they are phenomenal! So, yes leave the designer alone.😅😅
I've been a subbie for years and watch every video but I don't comment much. Well I HAD to comment and tell you this topic is so unique and much needed. Hiring a professional interior designer can feel intimidating but with all the points you mentioned it would seem less so. I'm not in the market for one but it was so interesting and entertaining to watch 💜💙💚💛🧡
Thank you for taking us on your consultation. I enjoyed learning the steps involved and what to expect. And more importantly I learned Ralph Lauren has metallic paint colors; I'm going to use to decorate my space.
Rebecca…. I loved this info… every time I walk into a house, office, church, bedroom, bathroom or even an exterior of a home I constantly think 🤔 I would add this or take away that… I would love to be an interior designer and have had people ask for my help on several different occasions…. I would love to have went to school for design because I love it so much… I’d never work a day in my life if that were the case….
omg me too! In my head I'm a wildly successful interior designer like Rebecca. In real life...not so much. Just me and my little apartment. But love her ideas, and I keep tryin!
This was so great to watch. I myself am an aspiring interior designer looking for an internship. I have done an online interior design program but it was not a degree program. It is very inspiring to know you started out similarly and have had such success! I hope my path is as fruitful. 😊
I had a very unfortunate experience with an interior designer after setting a thirty thousand dollar budget for new furniture, drapes, rug, lamps etc for my bedroom she showed me her fabric selections. After approving her fabric selections I inquired their cost after about a week I was told the fabric alone without any sewing costs was over eleven thousand dollars ($350-400 per yd). I picked out new less expensive fabric. The bed she recommended she would charge me eight thousand dollars only to find it in the display window of a local high end furniture store for six thousand. I was so turned off by her lack of respect for me, my time and budget I quickly settled up for time and ended our relationship. ALWAYS check references and get everything in writing in advance. I ended up using the furniture store in-house designer and finished the project on budget with no cost or timing problems.
❤Great information! I worked w an interior designer and she proved to be very helpful. I looked up your one hour consultation and it might be helpful for people to know that you include a years worth of your design sessions also. I was impressed that you look at peoples pictures and plans before the consultation, this makes so much sense. It’s a very excellent value!🎉
This was so candid, honest and helpful. I like that you stated that hiring an interior designer is a luxury. Although it “appears” accessible, it’s really not the “stuff” that makes the design. It’s the vision. Artistic visions cost time and money. I also like that you share ideas during the paid consultations. I do the same. I think for an hour + consultation it shows respect to leave the client with some value. Thank you for this!
🇬🇧 I love the way you are always on the move looking for new alternatives to please and capture the attention of your audience. Supporting you from London
Ms. Robeson,,, are you ok? We live in Pryor, east of Tulsa. I pray you have a generator or, ideally, didn’t lose your power!!!! I have been praying for, and thinking about, you. I know this was probably your first storm like this. I hope you are ok🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This really helps a lot. Question: With regards to purchasing materials/furniture/decor...what is the best way for the designer to be funded? Are they given an initial amount and periodically given subsequent amount? Is that done via check/card/bank transfer? Please advise and thank you in advance. 😁
Ohh my gosh,...Rebecca my girl,...This was fabulous information! As always , you are the best out there! You are honest. You are incredibly smart and talented. You are generous in Teaching the world how to make their Spaces more beautiful!! Such an Awesome calling your life is!! You are a blessing!
Thank you for this video. I had one designer come out and was very upset. You made me feel better about my decision not to hire her. She did not want to listen, only dictate.
I hired a designer to help with custom draperies with a budget of $15. She talk a good game but couldn’t deliver both in her recommendations and actually delivering the product. She couldn’t meet promised dates nor the designs we discussed. Them when we fired her she fought us over it and had her husband call us to further the excuses for their incompetence. Ugh. Terrible experience.
My daughter is an interior designer. She has a degree in architecture. She is licensed by the state and is also LEED certified (think environmental friendly). Because of her background, she knows building codes so that designs are not only aesthetically pleasing but safe. In the state she lives in, an interior designer must be a graduate of an accredited four year college with a degree in interior design or architecture and then pass the state tests. An interior decorator may have no professional training or background. Anyone can call themselves a decorator. This person will be fine for picking out fabrics and furnishings and like the title implies - decorating.
Rebecca, please tell me about the vase that is so prominent in your home. It looks like a stylized burlap sack and I love it!! Thank you! I love your videos!

OMG ! Talk about getting my fix. Lol I would never have thought in a million years that I would have become addicted to a interior designer 😊
Fantastic information.
Now, I'm dying to see the process and finished product of the couples' home. PLEASE finish it and share.
From the UK I actually used an in house designer at Woods of Harrogate who have done a yummy job for us on a full house refurbishment.Stuck to budget and listened to our ideas a dream.
Gosh please please do more design videos like these, I love luxury home renovations
Ralph Lauren had paint that mimic suede. To die for. I was so sad it was discontinued. I would do it again for an accent wall.
I just wanted to tell you that your are looking great!! Tulsa seems to agree with you!!!
Love you so much from Canada, wish to have chance to decorate my house with your designs. I believe you are the best in the market

6:56, I'm still rocking my Ralph Lauren metallic 🎨 paint. I love it!

Hi Joyce. Where did you watch about the jewelry wall idea? I am interested to find more about it. Thank you in advance.
Rebecca had done over her own closet in the house before Tulsa. Good ideas. MAYBE1 YR AGO?
@@joyceschneider8377 Thank you so much for your answer. I will try to find the video. 😊
