Rolex vs Tudor Submariner Watch & Behind The Scenes 2021 War Room Tour

- Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
- Today I share a behind-the-scenes tour of my latest War Room upgrades, a new Tudor for my collection, and thoughts on my favourite Rolex and Tudor Submariner watches.
We'll take a look at some collectable diecast airplanes, Lego sets, movies, antiques, must-have man cave accessories and tech. And we'll talk about the advantages and disadvantages of Rolex vs Tudor vintage Submariners like my current 79190. I also discuss my latest watch crush on the Rolex Submariner 16613 in blue, my watch collection goals, and the reason for my obsession with two-tone watches like the Datejust 16233 and Day-Date complications-like my Rolex "President" 18238 and Tudor Prince Date-Day 76213.
Join me for a fun look at the 2021 War Room, some very Urban Gentry watch collecting talk, and a special appearance from the sometimes devilish Hugo Mountbatten.

TGV : “you don’t need another watch. Stop thinking about watches”
Also TGV: Has the biggest and most well known watch channel on RUclips
"Stop looking at watches and get back to work"
Looks at watch
Normally when I'm thinking like this going through Amazon the girl friend asks what I'm doing. To which i almost always say just looking at stuff. And then add watch to my wish list.
I think I have the perfect 3 watch collection: Watch 1 - Apple Watch, being a dyslexic school teacher, I couldn’t do my job without this watch, been using it for about 4 years, I can deal with emails set reminders and have reminders pop up through lessons to keep me right without using my phone. Also used as a beater watch when working out or in water. Watch 2 - Rolex Sub for all my out of school hours, saved for years to buy this for myself for my 30th, reminds me of the value of hard work and perseverance. My favourite and final watch is a Seiko 5 my wife gave me on our wedding day, I only wear this when we go out together.
Anyone think this collection is missing anything? I can’t think of anything else I need that another watch could give me.
Love and peace guys!
Hmmmm, I think a blue Submariner would be a temporary infatuation, scratch that itch if you absolutely have to but DON’T SELL YOUR TUDOR SUB!!
VERY good point. As such a value Gentry member and commentator, I will take your words with the upmost importance. Thank you Peter.
Best regards,
TGV
Given your infatuation with the military history and connections of your watches - selling your Tudor sub for the anti-tool-watch tool watch would be a mistake.
I think you will regret selling the Tudor Sub. You clearly love the brand, have a connection with the watch, and you acknowledge that it will be hard to replace it. Worse if you do sell it, face regret and replace it….. it won’t be THE watch you have used in so many videos. I think that will deepen the regret. If you want to pair down the collection there are probably a handful you could cut then use the cash for the two tone Rolex. That might be a better exercise. And if the two tone was a flight of fancy, you could sell it and apply the proceeds to other projects. You will still have achieved the culling exercise.
@@christianhudson9623 damn right
@@christopherprevost763 Couldn't agree more. Its a tool watch at it's beating heart and I'd always buy it in its rawest form.
The introduction of the introduction is quite relatable
Agreed 😂
100% 😅
'Relatable' 😂
I can’t help but recall how many times you’ve worn your Tudor Sub in your previous videos and talking about how perfect it is.
Shamefully very true. I can't deny!!!!
You are so right, it is perfect.
Thank you for reminding me, I needed that.
Best regards,
TGV
DONT SELL IT!!!
DONT BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!!!
@@theurbangentry keep the Tudor, don't waste money on a Rolex.
All I can say is, I have owned a blue Rolex sub 16613 since new in 1997. After all these years, I have never tired of it. It’s the perfect mix of dressy and sporty. I’ve worn it in the ocean and I’ve worn it to weddings with a suit. I have over 50 watches in my collection, but that is one I’ve never, ever considered parting with.
I wouldn’t sell the Tudor sub. The two tone sub is a great watch but lacks the versatility of a black submariner. I’d sell the day date and the datejust and try to make up the rest! I had your problem before tgv. I bought a watch box with 20 compartments and told my self that’s the limit. Still going strong although watching this channel makes it difficult 🤣
Haha, thank you Luke, I really appreciate that.
Sorry for the temptations, if it males you feel any better, I have the same effect on myself! 😂😂😂
Anyways, enjoy it.
Best regards,
TGV
Keep the TUDOR sub! That's the sub to have.
Unlike the Rolex it is not pretentious and Tudor was the true Frogman watch out of the two of them
TGV, your intro is the best on youtube hands down. I really enjoyed the war room walk around.
Keep the Tudor Sub. I have the 114060 and 116613LB. It's a killer 2 piece meal deal hunger buster combo. Day/Night. Summer Spring/Fall Winter. A bit of flash/Stealth. A SS black sub and bluesy compliment each other. I have always worn a gold chain since early teens. I now wear my Dad's 14K Crucifix with my Grandma's wedding ring diamond mounted on it. My watch collection is TT heavy because of this, 5 of 9 are TT. If you wear gold, TT just makes sense.
Like you, I was mesmeized by the bluesy thumbing through NG mags in school and at my dentist's office. Was also mesmerized by King Tut's death mask. This color combo is striking. I bought a nice lapis lazuli bracelet to wear on the other arm with it. The bluesy is a perfect Summer watch. It sings in the sun. Some of those purple dial 5 digits are awesome. The added weight of the gold does make the Sub feel better. And to be honest, I prefer it, over the SS Sub. I still catch myself looking at it like I did when I first got it. It is the only watch in my collection that has gotten compliments.
Me on Twitter: "I cleaned up my study."
Guy on Twitter: "What´s a study?"
Me: "Well besides desk, computer and piano there is mostly car and plane models and LEGOs in there..."
Guy: "Now we are talking."
;-)
My collection is made up entirely of sub $200 Seikos, Citizens, Invictas, Casios and Vostoks. Each has a distinctive look, as I've tried hard to not have watches that all look the same. Enjoy your new watch TGV! Cheers my friend.
I have a 1989 duo-tone Chronomat. I bought it with a stainless steel case, black dial with gold subdials, gold crown, gold pushers, gold rider tabs, and gold screws on the bezel. As part of an overhaul 10 years ago, I had the dial replaced with a black one with white subdials, had all the gold components replaced with stainless steel, and had a new orange second hand installed. When I originally bought the watch I loved the duo-tone. I still think it looked very good then but now I prefer the all-steel version with its more sincere tool watch feel. As for more dressy watches, duo-tone can look great and a bit more subdued than all-gold.
Best intro ever? Man! The quality on this one was next level!
That intro 😂 The struggle is real
Well I love seeing the war room! Especially how I remember previous bits and bobs from years gone by!
1stly;) the Seiko clock is saying 3:55am!!!! Poor wife needs the sleep surely!!!;)
2nd I thought I was the only one with a Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace DVD!!
Great show!
The Catalina is an awesome plane! I got the chance to fly in one, before it was sadly sold to another country. Skimming the water at over 100 k/h almost felt like a rollercoaster ride.
I’m wearing my Rolex 166133 Two Tone Submariner which I bought brand new in July of 2002...I will never let this one go!
The production quality of these videos is amazing, always a blast to watch
I have been trying to "consolidate" my watch collection for the past 30 years. You are chasing unicorns TGV !
The introduction is basically my daily conversation with myself
Another “Certified Pure Class” vid. TGVs on top because he Does His own thing.
My old boss had a two-tone submariner. I always thought i wouldnt like the looks of the two-tone, but that watch never looked out of place. On the wrist i have to say its a fantastic choice
I went and watched The American after your last video and now need to watch The Killer. Maybe you can do more movie recommendations along the way? I always enjoy visiting with you.
Lol I did the same and it was a great movie.. I agree, he needs to do more movie suggestions
Great to see another war room tour TGV! As for the watch dilemma, I would sit with it for a while and see if your desire for the two-tone is still there after a few weeks. It takes a lot of restraint but I sometimes do that to gauge whether I'm just lusting after a watch versus actually desiring it. I've noticed I hold onto the ones I've determined I truly desire, while the ones I've bought due to lust have been sold.
Excellent point, I will certainly take your wise advice,
Thank you my friend, I would expect nothing less from you.
Best regards,
TGV
Wow! Great Job!! Your videos are always so interesting! The intros with all these images related to past and present days, art and mechanics, fading one into the other, and the music, reminds me of The opening credits of TV Series "The Persuaders"! I really hope you've seen it once in your life! Roger Moore and Tony Curtis... I love LEGO, since I was a kid, at that time there were only red and white bricks (green for the roof of the house), but there were TENTE bricks to build ships and sci-fi machines with round bricks! I think many of us bought the "new" LEGO for their kids, to play with them. I really love SCI-Fi Movies, from "the day the earth stood still" 1951 until Star Trek Picard, passing through Dune, Stingray and The Clockwork Orange! If you love knives too, you should consider a "vernantin" Italian hand made knife from Vernante, in Piedmont, or a "Pattada" from Sardegna. ;-)
Yes do it. The swag on the 16613 is just undeniable. That blue dial is stunning . Definitely greater than the sum of it parts (2 tone Datejust and steel sub)
Thank you KLC ;-)
Best regards,
TGV
omg this intro was the most reeeelatable thing bahahha!
Really enjoy your channel, your positivity is infectious. Even when you don’t care for something you still have many good things to say about the subject, that’s a rare quality for a RUclips channel… keep the Tudor Sub, I can promise that you will kick yourself for letting it go.
Don't sell it because you will regret it! YOU KNOW YOU WILL!!
A friend of mine has a Sub 2 tones, blue dial (I think it was a 16613P). It's a great piece, and he wore it in special occasions only, while the black Submariner date 16610 was his "everyday" watch. I think I will wear gold but actually my only gold watch is a vintage Wittnauer, too small for my wrist :-). I think you should do all that makes you happy! The recent pandemic teaches me that it is not always possible to live the life of your dreams, so, if in your heart you've already made the decision, you just need to materialize it. I know you won't be disappointed. Anyway, the Oyster Date, is a magnificent timepiece, and talking about your specific "happy problem", Tudor and Rolex are very close in terms of quality and prestige, especially the models in your hands, and to me, the possibility to "wear them when you like" is more a bonus, that I think with your new Sub 2 tones, maybe you will not get. Cheers from Italy! Ciao!
Yes yes yes TGV Go for the 16613 Blue, I own it, as a wedding present, this blue tone is so unique, you will never see anything like it even on a Rolex watch ...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 ❤️ your channel...
Ulises ( Spanish & Mexican ) London resident friend.
I will give you credit on the fact that you really are ahead of the trends or going in your own direction watch collecting wise ….and that is pretty cool …watches id normally not look twice at,have all the sudden sparked an interest wether through the in depth description or beautiful videography and editing work ….whatever the case …you have opened up segments that I’d previously turned a blind eye to,,,so for that ….cheers
Love the intro of course! Love the tour too. My gut feel is, you’ll miss the black Tudor Sub and it’s versatility however, you certainly won’t lose money on the LB so, if you get bored of it, you can move it on and purchase the Tudor back and/or a Rolex Sub! You only live once! Enjoy it! Having said that, as Nancy Sinatra once sang…..”Live one life for yourself and one for your dreams!” So technically You Only Live Twice!
Just started this video. I bought a blue two tone in 2017, with a little discount from WoS for £9600. Loved it, such a great looking piece, but part exchanged it a year ago at another AD, for £8100, against a different watch. Lost £1500 in 3 years, but it did have a little damage, and I did use an AD rather than sell privately.
As much as I loved it, I'm happy with my cheaper replacement watch, Air King, plus the £3k back.
I actually have that same seiko world clock. Never seen anyone else have it until I stared watching/following your channel.
Excellent video, TGV. Love the war room tour ....great to see some of the old favorites and the new pieces you have added. The new Sega, matching Swatch, and layout all look to be fantastic modifications. As for the selling of the Tudor to fund a two tone Rolex Sub......I would wait and make sure that is really what you want.....the two tone you mention is a incredibly awesome piece, probably the only two tone sub I’d ever consider. BUT.... the Tudor sub you have is much more iconic, has much more personal importance with the rose, military importance, serviceability, you listed all the reasons. If you sell to fund a Rolex you will be losing one piece that is neither here or there PLUS one that has MASSIVE importance to you and would be damn near impossible to replace.....all to fund a purchase of a Rolex Submariner.....granted your MAY not lose much money if any on the Sub, but the piece won’t have anywhere near the significance that your Tudor does. My two cents. I’d consider selling the other one sure, and maybe saving the rest of the cash for the two tone ....then after you have had the two tone a bit make the decision which Sub to get rid of then.....I’d bet the Rolex would find the door before the vintage Tudor did...anyway. Best of luck with the decision. Onward and upward!
I would never sell the Tudor Submariner. All other watches you mentioned to sell, that's ok.
Thanks for you passion to watches. It brought me back mine. Saluti da Colonia, Holger
I’m so envious of your war room TGV!
FYI recently acquired a 2021 Explorer, my favorite watch by far. Purchase inspired by your videos;)
What a classy show!! Excellent Video, Without a doubt the most Classy grounded and true horologist !! Love all the history reference and the presentations!
Scary how much TGV and I like the same things: Lego, watches (most of which I can't afford), EDC foldable knives, etc, etc. There has to be some sort of personality profile that describes us.
great vid. my war room is perpetually under construction. if you want to use watches as they were intended, and not just keep them in a box i think 12 is a good size for a collection for the average person. it allows for plenty of variety or a focused theme, and youd be wearing each of your watches around 3 days a month. not counting special occasions, or wearing a beater on the weekends. as they say, g-shocks dont count....
Another great video, I love that intro! I really do like that Tudor sub. I personally would not sell it. Best of luck to you my friend.
Miguel
Good video - but God no, don't make that trade, that Tudor and Rolex you have are so much classier. The new two-tone sub is brasher and too shouty..... you said you gravitate towards vintage... you've answered your own question
Another great video, TGV, and the intro was very relatable! I’m actually saving for the Tudor BB58 blue for my high school graduation next year. Have been saving for a year and my local AD has it, so I’ll be very excited to add that to my collection which consists of a Seiko Skx007j and a Marathon TSAR from my father. Hopefully I can email you some pictures of it when I get it! Have a good one. (Also I hope Yema sends you one of their MN watches to review!!) 😀👍
The new intro at 2.28 is 🔥💥❤️🔥
Top video. Great to hear the 2yr review on the TDR Sub and in such a nice studio!!
The War Room seems curiously bereft of weapons. I take it there's an armoury somewhere else 😄
Good evening TGV! The Tudor Submariner and the DayDate is a great Duo! I love the TwoTone-look of the DayDate, and the TwoTone Sub is a classy piece. Have a great evening!
Omg that intro and music absolutely class.! The kippers knickers 🐟🩲
Thank you my friend, it took weeks to find the right score for the new 2021 channel intro, I am so glad you enjoy it too.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry You absolutely nailed it (to be fair, the music you choose for your watch reviews is always on point). Very few people match music to content and you’re a master. Thanks for the content.
No words, just thank you 🙏 😊 I am deeply honored.
Im new to the hobby and one of the major reasons for subscribing to your channel is how you educate on the history of the watches. Can you please do a video of must read watch history books for people getting into the hobby. Just love learning about it and would like to have a book collection as part of the hobby as well. Great video again. Keep em coming.
TGV your intros are just top notch quality and so entertaining!!! NOOOO you must keep the Tudor. I personally wanted a 70’s sub with more a vintage look, however that was out of my budget so with the help of another enthusiast i managed to get a strap made from a genuine WW2 Swiss army pistol carrier for my blue Pelagos. Scratched that itch perfectly and now has a great story to which will live on through my family in years to come!.
New Video!! clicked as fast as possible. The war room is what I aspire to have once I'm older. I feel like it's just a whole time machine. It transports you to so many decades through the books, posters, artwork, watches, etc... truly amazing TGV looks awesome once again! - Guillermo
My cousin had the two tone Sub, it screamed Del Boy!!!!
Keep the Tudor sub, too cool for school.
Also that day date rocks.
Love the episode, cheers T G V. 👍🏴
Doesn’t he say every 3 months that he’s consolidating and then pretends to have convinced himself it’s ok not to?
Don’t we all?
@@chasp_0784 lol no. I try to convince myself I don’t have enough
@@golfalpha284 I’ve heard that the correct amount of watches is N+1, N being the current amount of watches you have.

I just hovered around this video and i had no need to watch it all i already know i going to like it. You should do more videos like these whenever you feel like it, Cheers
My favorite watch channel on RUclips handsdown !
That Intro😭🤣it s 100% my problem too🤣
I only have one sub, but could honestly say I would be able to enjoy any variation. The two tone with the blue dial is versatile and sporty.
Omg, TGV! This was the best intro by far, imo.
The same scenario goes through my mind so often 🤣
Get that lovely blue 2 tone Rolex and 12 watches is the best number, it shows restraint but leaves room enough for a bunch of awesome picks.
War room looks great T! I’ve always loved the 18K/Steel Blue Sub. I had the black one for many years, my only issue was that the gold takes up a large part of the link and tends to scuff and scratch so easily. Although selling the Tudor Sub might be a hard decision to make, it is a step up with the Rolex, and will match your Gold jewelry better. Variety is the spice of life 😎
Best Regards
Stuart
Amazing introduction!
Congratulations TGV!
All the best!
I’ve always lusted after the “LB”. It’s absolutely on my list. Just do it.
Really enjoyed the war room tour!!
Two tone jubilee, there really is something about them! I need 1 too but in black!
I've got 8 watches, more than enough! 10 at a push!
83 baby same as you. Your looking well my matey!
Great update, TGV, my favourite watch content producer! Legend!
Thank you 😀

Love seeing that Resolute X-1 around 5:40! It has replaced my collection of Benchmade, Kershaw, and Gerber for my EDC use... 99% of the time it's the right tool for the job. A year ago I'd have laughed if you told me I'd trade my Benchmade for a Boxcutter...
I love two tone as well but I'm an early 80s baby too.
I use to love going to the movie or music store and looking at all the cover art.
I was browsing in an antique store and bought a Bulova desk clock that was made in West Germany. I had no idea Bulova made clocks in Germany.
I kept saying no until you picked the blue. My 30 year now goal is bluesy.yourself, Hugo, and I are now in line.I'm buying blue in 12 months.all other will be 007.omega.but I like your Tudor sub.......blasted
Keep the tudor sub. Rarer. .. And a stunning watch
Ideal size of a collection is 5 pieces (for me) and YES, get the two-tone Sub!
My dude pulling out Critters. :slow clap:
Also, High Tension is so good. And then you go and pop up the Day of the Dead poster; the best film in the series IMO. Great taste in horror.
I traded a vintage Rolex President Day Date for two Tudor watches. The North Flag and the Steel and Gold Black Bay with the Black dial. So, trading two for one gives me no qualms, because that plus some boot was how I got the President originally. I’m also fine with the two tone of Steel and Gold. I also own a two tone TAGHeuer. They are very presentable watches. As to how many watches to have in a collection, my 45 automatics and 14 quarts (mostly “entry level”) watches demonstrates that I do not believe in limiting the number of watches in a collection. If the price is right, and you’ll wear the watch, buy it.
Tudor is great, date/day is really excellent, but that Bulova Spaceview is really something special...it's not waterproof, it's not tough, but it's a timeless masterpiece without any doubt. Swatch clock is great, too. Thank you, this was a great video
Ciao

I'd love a Lego video! I got the Saturn V to accompany my Moonwatch :D
Loved the episode, very fresh.... congratulations
There even is a small red Seiko x Supreme version of your yellow desk clock :) funny, unexpected collab - so I got one
The new Certina DS two tone green and gold.Perfect
The ideal collection size is 'just one more'.
The new intro is splendid!
Hi TGV, this video takes me back to the original Gentry. Great 👍
Great video TGV! Thanks for the war room tour! Working from home for a year I’ve made a few changes to my home office/war room as well. My job has nothing to do with watches, but i have 5 to 6 watches, a few straps, and a winder on my standing desk. For a clock I use a wind-up Russian submarine clock that keeps amazing time! I’m also a bit of a pocket knife collector so i keep many of those on a shelf nearby as well. Keep up the great work Sir!
Keep the Tudoe Sub! TGV, I know there is strange logic that surrounds this watch hobby and I'm probably one of the last people to give advice however I have a suggestion.
Take the Tudor Sub off and put it in a closed box in the safe for say three to six months as a target. Do not look at it, handle it or even wind it. Don't worry the Rolex market will remain just as it is for now. Sell some of the rest of the collection by all means. If during the 3 to 6 month period you find the need open the safe and open the box at take a look at the Tudor it will feel like seeing that old friend again who you didn't realise you would miss so much. That would confirm that you should keep it. If however there is no emotion when you see the watch again then clearly it is time to sell. You have 2 years history with the Tudor and know it, to try and get another that you know so well in a good condition will be harder and given the rising prices on the used market it would cost you more as well. Rolex Subs on the other hand are still pretty plentiful if expensive on the used market with more and more landing all the time.Yes the Rolex Sub will be expensive but as you sold an old modern one as there was little connection the same could so easily happen again only this time your old friend had gone for ever. OK the Rolex Sub has evolved over time gaining flab and ceramic and recently the re-profile is harking back a little towards those classic days it still is obviously a Sub. If I was in your shoes I'd keep your good friend the Tudor Sub. That is all. Apologies for the long comment.
Under 20 is a good goal. That Rolex sub is an awesome purchase. 👌 brilliant video as always. Cheers.
My two-tone Cartier Tank Francaise is my favorite watch. It was a 10 year wedding anniversary gift from my wife and it matches my two-tone wedding band. I'm also an 80's baby, so maybe that explains it!
Absolute pure class watch, I love it. Thank you BJL, enjoy it!

Nice intro sir. It´s really different for me to notice when it´s ending and when the "content" starts (sometimes - for me) it is somehow fluent !
I like two tone. One of my favourites is the Rolex Day date, two-tone, smooth bezel, oyster bracelet, blue dial ref.116203 or the older ref.16013 or perhaps the "louder" fluted bezel/ Jubilee version ref.16233. Regarding collection size: I don´t care ...............as long as it makes me happy (and I have the bucks) I´ll be purchasing new tickers, cheap ones, crazy ones, loud ones, military, divers......who cares? In the end it´s only me. Nobody takes any notice of what I wear on the wrist.
I think a thorough tour of your film collection would be interesting and strike up a lot of conversation on the channel. It's another topic that contains a lot of depth!
i agree with most of the folks here saying not to sell the tudor sub, so much character, and a fine example you have. never been much of a two-tone fan.....either all steel or all gold, IMHO
Lovely room with great character. I would suggest a Rolex Submariner No Date. Just seems more pure (and of course has that famous close up in Goldfinger).
23:56 I had the same thought when I bought my Invicta Pro Diver 8928 LOL🤣🤣. Great video and I hope you make the right decision for you!
"Nóż w wodzie" - I am glad I saw some Polish accent in your War Room! Greetings from Poland!
Nice tour of the War Room. Old Tudor is lovely.
Definitely turning my study into a war room these summer holidays! I’d like some lovely watches to go in it too.......
Yesssss 😎🥂
Please let me know how it goes.

TGV you are my hero, I feel very identified with your videos, I really like when you talk about the war room and show a little bit of your life style, thanks! 👌🏽
TGV. Love your channel and I obviously love watches too or I wouldn’t be here. That said I going to relate your desire for that watch to something many musicians often ponder. In my experience I’ll have a bass guitar that I really like but I always find myself looking at other basses either in stores or on reverb or on eBay. There is always another bass you lust after but I can only have so many before my wife would probably through me out if I bought another one. So a number of years back I sold an American made 5 string musicman bass so that I could buy a Fender 5 string jazz bass. Till this day I so regret that decision because it was a beautiful bass and it would easily cost me three or four times what I sold it for to replace it. Bottom line is don’t make excuses to justify selling your other pieces just to fund a new purchase, but give it lots of thought and make sure you are comfortable with your decision so that you don’t later regret like It like I did. Good luck with your final decision.
More visuals on the 76213! Love the Tudor Prince Date + Day. Two tone has come back around. It’s here to stay.
Hey TGV! Love the channel, keep up the amazing work.... don’t you dare sell the Tudor!! Sell something else if the bi-colour itch must be scratched - it’s such a credible piece, and I feel it defines your output for me.. There’s so many Rolex submariners out there.. The Tudor tips it’s hat but without “that” excess connotation. My favourite watch in your collect by a country mile....
Spotted Lady Snowblood. Maiko Kaji's music is amazing
What can I say?! I like your videos even before watching them. 🙏🏻🙌🏻
