In Search Of The Perfect Submariner: Rolex 16613 & 1680 vs Tudor 79090 Watches

  • Today we take a quick road trip and compare submariners from Rolex and Tudor, in a very personal review as I try to decide on which will be my next big purchase for 2021.
Join me as I explore the historic USS New Jersey, enjoy Italian food in Philadelphia, and take a deep dive into the history, evolution, positives and negatives of two outstanding Submariners from each brand. How does my current Tudor 79090 compare to the two-tone Rolex 16613, aka the "Bluesy"? Or the equivalent ref. 1680 from Rolex? And of course, the modern ceramic ref. 116610LN which I formerly owned?
Is it time to upgrade? Or are Submariners no longer as cool as they once were? Why do I prefer vintage over new Subs? And is it perhaps time to trade it all in for the Yachtmaster 126622, which I reviewed last year?
Join me for a Submariner special, and where better than in the Submariner’s natural environment-which also happens to be one of the most legendary battleships of all time!

I’m so happy to weigh in here! As an owner of a 16613 “bluesy” since 1998, I can say that over all the years of my watch collecting it is not only the Rolex I have hung on to the longest, but the watch in general I have kept for the greatest time. In my over 25 years of collecting, I have owned 6 Rolexes and 2 Tudors. The two tone submariner is the only one I have kept, and with good reason....It does it all. I got married wearing it. (Twice, actually!) It has been on every single vacation I’ve taken since I have purchased it. I wear it when I am doing yardwork and I wore it last year to my nieces wedding (while wearing a suit). There’s no environment where it just doesn’t look perfect. My wife, who doesn’t really know much about watches or cares about them, has asked me to never sell it because she just loves the way it looks. That kind of appeal just doesn’t come along every day, and that should speak volumes. Thanks so much, Tristano, for another insightful and masterfully crafted review.

A couple of things, TGV. First off, the mics sound excellent! Secondly, I think the Tudor is the right choice over the bluesy sub. I completely agree with all of your observations of the two watches. I'd pick the Tudor for myself too!

I feel the Yacht-Master does the luxury Submariner feel, look better than 2-tone or precious metal Subs do.
Aesthetically more striking, different with variety of materials, sizes, and that bezel, while lux Subs are more uniform while coming across as rarefied classics.
Tongue-in-cheek summation: the person in the Yacht-Master owns the boat; the person in the Submariner pilots it around for them.

Great video - I believe in a beautiful watch for all occasions.. for me, that's my Bluesy 16613 (1996 made) - I'd prefer the newer adjustable clasp, but I also love the vintage.
As an Aussie - I dress pretty casual most of the time so it often features with shorts & t-shirt but my Bluesy takes any outfit up a level.

I have owned a 16613 since 1998. I had it cleaned at Rolex (CH) last year for about $1000.
As a daily driver, I purchased a Steeldive SD1953 (green with ceramic green bezel, with lume of face and bezel, sapphire crystal, Seiko NH35A) for $99. Upgraded the bracelet to a fully brushed, solid link, machined adjustable clasp, for $27 from AliExpress. What a terrific watch and a real "steal" for the money. Sure, it isn't a Rolex. But damn...it is still an excellent watch and something much less prone to scratch, given the ceramic bezel. It is also fairly accurate (@21.6 kbps) relative to the far superior Rolex mechanism (28.8 Kbps).
I wear the Rolex to work, occasionally. However, the SD1953 is on my wrist much more often.

For some reason that transition felt genious, quite cinematic.
When you finished talking whilst facing the ship, before boarding, into slow speech about Rolex, and with music in the background. Really well done, the only thing better would have been some slow serious classical tune, instead of the funky Jazz.
    !

    Dear TGV,
Another enjoyable installment sir. My 6yo son and I always look forward to the YT notification, and we watch the show together. I always enjoy these outing videos, how you blend something a little different such as sight seeing, very fun. And then blending the days activities to the context of the watch. Then finallly the edit and narration brings it all together with the watch details in various ways - a fun episode.
    Kind Regards,
    Dean.
PS. My choice would be the Tudor also, for the same reasons, a little off the radar, knowing you have something different.

In my view the Rolex sub didn’t become a luxury watch in 1969 it was the 80’s and 90’s when that happened. The gold one was Luxury but a Date window doesn’t make it a luxury watch. Just more practical for those who work in Maritime.

    Get both. I have a 116613lb and 114060.
They're different watches. Stealth, a bit of flash, Winter/Summer, Day/Night.
As a boy in the 80s, I fell in love with the bluesy plastered all over national geographic mags while visiting drs, dentists, science class.
It was such a special time in my life. In 2019, I went into the AD with choice of blue or blk tt. The blue won me over. It takes a special person to embrace the bluesy. I could daily it no problem. It's the perfect fuck off timepiece. Hahaha
My favorite watch in the entire Rolex lineup.

My husband has a 1995 steel no date Rolex Sub and I adore that watch.
So last year I decided I wanted one for myself. I was torn between the steel no date and blue two tone… I had my concerns that it might be too flashy for my style.
I went to Rolex boutique to decide. They happened to have a steel date Sub and one two tone black there waiting for pick up. I shit you not, when I tried on the black two tone my heart skipped a beat. It is too gorgeous. So I got myself the two tone black and it makes me smile every time I look at it.
I am currently on waitlist for the steel no date 😅 I refuse to pay grey market prices. No way. I will happily wait a few years.
I’ve been tempted to get the Tudor instead, but I doubt I will be completely happy with it.

the two tone blue was my grail for many years. a friend had the irs knocking at his door so he offered it to me at a good price. i didn’t think i should spend the money on such an extravagance but my wife had some money stashed and she bought it for me for graduating the correctional academy. i wore it quite a bit but was a little nervous out in public. so i wore it while working the yard at san quentin. my post was the main thoroughfare to go to the cellblocks. the inmates had to pass me to get to the lower yard and the education and religious services. needless to say i got a lot of looks from staff and inmates alike. the inmates knew what it was and one asked me why i would wear such a watch at work. i told him it’s one of the safest places i could wear it. he laughed and said i was probably right.
i wore it for many years until i found a used fortis flieger in new orleans. my tastes had changed. one thing about the rolex is the enamel is flaking of the dial to where it’s about 75% gone. it’s gold underneath and looks like the gold dial version. i’m sure it’s the same without the enamel and with the jewels instead.

I’m not sure I can fully agree about the BB58 being a watch for hipsters. Looking at the IG/RUclips “influencers” in watch community, it seems like the most hipster thing at the moment is to get a vintage sub/Tudor. And by no means is that a bad choice, it’s just the most common choice at the moment. Which brings me to another point: many of these influencers are criticizing BB58 for being too obvious of a choice, while still rocking the sub in their collection. What is more obvious/typical choice than a sub? Funny thing is, some of these people are even saying they much prefer the BB58 over their sub, but they still end up selling it and keeping the sub. I guess it has to be because they feel the BB58 won’t bring them enough respect in the community, being less expensive and more attainable. And of course TGV is known to appreciate watches from any price point, so I’m not referring to him here.
And about the fauxtina: imo people are making too big of a deal of it, and over analyzing it. To me it’s just an off-white color used here, which suits the watch a lot better than pure white would with the guilt.

Top notch production with excellent cinematography and a well balanced comparison. I will always express my personal preference for Tudor, as an owner of both brands, Rolex have a better finish but attracts a premium that no rational mind can put into context. Tudor beats Rolex in value for money and cool factor, the contemporary Rolex is a luxury fashion watch. I must note that Rolex is very robustly machined, up market and certainly overpriced. The understated Tudor may present a better option to mare mortals.

I haven't watched one of your videos in ages TGV, its good to be back!! I love the blue dial Sub, but I agree for every day wear the Tudor Sub is a much better choice. A little fun fact about the USS New Jersey. In the late 90's it was docked here in Bremerton WA (my hometown) at the navel ship yard. It left on September 11, 1999. My dad and my grandfather took me to the beach to watch the USS New Jersey leave Bremerton. I was 8 years old at the time and I loved it as any 8 year old would.

Hi TGV. Another interesting video. I do like your ‘field shoots’ very much. Breaks up the studio shoots for something different. I do hope the destroyer was ok after you banged it with your Tudor! 👍

audio is perfect as always. I kinda got burnt out of Subs (homages) for now. As I sow your gold Day-Date my eyes just opened up way more then those Subs could ever open them.. :D I also watch 5th season of Sopranos now.. Tony was perfect one watch guy. With a gold watch.. As to answer - Tudor. It just has more character in my opinion..

I honestly think you should keep you Tudor. All the "negatives" that you stated about the watch is what's so charming about the watch. The plexi glass, the aluminum bezel that will change color over time, the affordable ETA movement, are all good, especially for a handsome tool watch. You and your Tudor is what inspired me to get a Red submariner inspired, Steinhart ocean red watch, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

Great choice! Since discovering this channel few years ago I've been searching for Tudors. At the end, I bought a little oyster prince and a Black Bay 58. They both make a perfect unpretentious two-watch collection to me! Maybe I should start looking at other brands now!

That blue-gold one (4:33) looks a bit too blingy for my taste. But the gold-ish dial Tudor (10:16) looks really cool :)

I don’t get the practical hate on date windows for diving/exploring... if u are exploring or diving on an expedition/research as a professional... on a time before cellphones, having the date was probably useful to keep track of progress etc.

The Tudor seems so much more wearable, usable - a most important quality in a great watch. And tragically (and quite ironically, and heretical in thought), the Rolex looks like an Invicta.

Yacht Master 40 def, but don’t wait to long they are sleepers that are waking up. Prices have gone up 30% in 4 months on them, my ym 40 platinum dial is the most underrated and I believe the most beautiful Rolex till date. Enjoy,Jeff.

Great vid TGV, I love your rationale for choosing the 79090. Couldn’t agree more. Fairly new to watches and thought I’d want / deserve a Rolex for my 50th birthday present to self, but I don’t think I’m really a Rolex guy 😂. Off to the online shops to keep an eye out for a TDR. Hope your enthusiasm has rocketed the prices too high!!

The perfect sub is the Tudor BB58 😆 . The battleship NJ is very cool. Quite some time ago i think in 2003 maybe, i was in the boy scouts and we spent the night on the battle ship NJ. We slept in the cots that the sailors slept in and it was pretty cool. That boats been through alot and has seen quite a bit of conflict and some sailors have lost their lives on that boat. Something everyone should check out if your in the area.

Great vid and, absolutely, prefer the Tudor to the Rolex. And so loved seeing you touring the USS New Jersey... including my own work station while aboard her: Combat Engagement Center (16:03). Did you know this was designed to emulate the Bridge of the USS Enterprise on Star Trek? True story! As told in "The Making of Star Trek", the Joint Chiefs of Staff from the Pentagon visited the original series set and used this to help develop the model on which all naval ships' combat centers are based. As always, great work and looking forward to more great content.

I think you know how to enjoy all the small things of the moment like every gentleman should do: you seem to really value the view, the food and the talking with random people, creating connection. For that I see you as am example. Changing subject, I still don't have the experience of owning a real sub but I feel quite confident wearing my "Orient Sub rip off" or homage, for a better word.

Hey TGV what lavalier model is that? I've been thinking of getting 3 for the studio since I've been recording a lot talk shows this year. Btw the Tudor looks amazing and the Rolex is over the top lol. I saw a Tudor Blackbay a couple weeks ago while on a trip and what can I say, can't go wrong with a Tudor.
