Tudor and Rolex...brothers...sisters...enemies. Today Michael makes the daring choice of telling Christian that the Tudor Pelagos is a better watch than the Rolex Submariner. Is he correct? Has Rolex finally gone too far with their price to quality ratio? Or does Tudor cut corners/miss something that Rolex has?

I’ve owned a Pelagos LHD for the last two years and it’s a fantastic watch. It regularly gets compliments, more so than my Rolex, which I love but is very common to all finance bros, tech bros, lawyers and doctors. Each time you get on a plane, take a look at the wrists as you’re boarding. You’re typically gonna see several black subs on the way to your seat. Love it but unfortunately, there’s nothing special anymore about a standard black Rolex Submariner

I'm with Michael on this. Ignoring the price and brand, just looking at the watch and how it's built... the Pelagos beats the Sub. With the Rolex you're buying brand and status. With the Tudor you're buying a great watch.
Also a correction, the movement in the Pelagos is a Tudor in-house movement, not at all related to ETA. I would argue it's a BETTER movement than the Rolex as it has a silicon balance spring, on top of the full balance bridge and 70 hour power reserve..

If you want a nice mechanical watch, you have various brands to choose from, and each has to make a profit, as does the shop selling it to you.
It’s no different to most other things.
The nicer it gets, the more it costs generally.

The lightness combined with what felt like quite a flimsy bracelet meant it felt like far less of a quality product than the Submariner. It has the 40mm size, no date bubble and the higher depth rating (just to boast about don’t think anyone takes a dive watch that deep these days) PLUS it has the modern solid link bracelet and machined clasp as opposed to the 16600 which has the old hollow links and stamped bracelet.

For the price you do get more with Tudor’s watches in general. But you can’t deny the history and status that the Sub has. For the same price, any reasonable person would take the Sub. But I don’t think it’s worth over twice as much at retail and three times as much in the market today. But out of these two watches, I’d probably stick with the BB58. The black gilt has more character than either in my opinion and it’s even cheaper than the Pelagos especially second hand. I’ve seen them on straps as low as $2,500 and on a bracelet as low as $2,800. That’s where I’d go and spend the difference on a nice dress watch and a GShock to complete a perfect 3 watch collection.

You can drop the helium escape valve and water resistance but keep everything else the same, and it's my ideal watch. The 42m watch immaculates men with smaller wrists when it's supposed to accentuate their masculinity. Watches are like suits. Too small, and you look feminine. Too big, and you look like you're a child. Just right, and there's magic. The Pelagos LHD is a modern-day Sean Connery Bond watch. The tan markers add a sense of strength; the matt dial and titanium materials are the best available, and the LHD keeps the watch purely functional, even for right-handed people who don't need the crown digging into the back of their hands. Comparing the lume issue is tricky because Rolex doesn’t lume the bezel. There are incidences of the lume pip falling out of the sub. So, lume can always fall out, when it’s present. The lume doesn’t fall out of the vast majority of Pelagos watches, but it’s not even present in 100% of Subs. Not saying which is better. I have and love a Pelagos and have only handled Subs briefly.

Great video guys. Keep them coming. Here's my two cents. If you want to say the sub is better looking, has a finer pedigree, is more reliable, or that it's "more luxurious" you can make those arguments. But if you say the sub is jewelry and the pelagos isn't, I don't think that argument holds water. If the primary difference between the Pelagos and the Sub is that the Sub is a piece of jewelry then the Tudor is what? A tool watch? A function first, no-BS reliable watch whose primary purpose is to be legible, waterproof, and accurately measure elapsed time while diving? Ok but by the way, it costs 4500 dollars. There goes the no-frills argument. Try explaining that to a non-watch person diver and you might get a funny look. There are any number of dive computers and quartz watches that do all of those things better for a few hundred bucks or less. The reason it costs 4500 dollars is that its a well made mechanical time piece bringing you not just rugged dive-watch functionality but also swiss tradition, brand pedigree, and a handsome luxurious (sub the word "expensive" if you feel that term doesn't apply here) aesthetics. In other words "jewelry." In other words, BS. I'm a diver. Among the watches I own are a tudor diver, a rolex diver, and 2 or 3 dress watches as well. I love them all for what they are. But let's be real. What they are is jewelry.

Sub is definitely dressier. And Christian needs to bring some numbers to the table on his alleged quality issue with the Pelagos bezel. And the warranty is plenty long with all new Tudors. Yeah, having to send a watch away for a while sucks - but hardly a catastrophe.
But your ‘double the price’ - try 4 or 5x for the prevailing grey rates (new).

Rolex has a bad image in my private environment. Car salesmen wear Submariners.
For me, the 14060M came into question, it went back to the dealer. Felt cheap.
New Submariners are better, of course, but they are also extremely flashy, visually. Embarrassing ;-)

Tudor is for people who love Rolex watch design, its DNA or owned Rolex watches before, but hate how the brand + AD handling customer nowadays. Tudor is always be the love letter to Rolex every now and then according to their last hit release of BB Pro and Pelagos 39mm (which in normal situation people will likely notice it as Sub if they don't see it closely).
That's why they aren't or ever be able to beat their bigger sister.

I owned BB58 Black and the lume has not been properly filled on each hands (one of them have black stain on it) I have to went to back to AD for replace new hands which took 3-4 weeks, also some dude on watch community few years ago found Pelagos lume index came off from the bezel. This still not included the BB GMT Pepsi when it released with Date Wheel issue.
Tudor is decent Rolex homage brand and watchmaker, but their price not and never worth USD 4,000. There are so many brand out there provide more better QC, more superior finishing and better distinctive looks at this price point such as ORIS, OMEGA, NOMOS and JLC.

For what these watches are for - diving/active wear. Any diver would go with a Pelagos first. Yes, if you ask watch nerds that foam at the mouth for the Rolex name/allure, of course you would pick a Rolex. I had an 114060 and sold it because I enjoyed wearing watches like a Turtle in most occasions. I used to skateboard down the Mission Beach/PB (San Diego) board walk with my sub and it felt wrong, a small pebble and replacing the glass/ceramic bezel would have been north of $2,000.... why? meh, got rid of my Rolexes (3).
Waiting to buy a Pelagos 39. Seikos keep my wrist warm these days, and I'm having a blast; SBDC101, SBDC171, SPRE93J8..... my needs are met. Cant wait to get my hands on the Pelagos. I wouldn't get the Rolex again. I do regret selling my OP39 blk. That was a great everyday watch. Sub? you compulsive watch buyers can bid over that and pay thousands over MSRP for you to realize a few months later that its just a shiny object with a nice label.....

  • @stevesaka8191
    @stevesaka8191 Месяц назад

People that say the only people who buy the Pelagos over the Sub is because they can't afford a Rolex are morons. If you like the Roli better, no prob that is a personal choice, but if you are looking for which is the bullet proof diver/tool watch the Pelagos is titanium, more legible, has a tactile bezel stop, divers extension, comes with both a titanium micro adjusting bracelet and a rubber strap, etc - I own both the Pelagos LHD and the FXD Black, a Omega NTTD, a modern Roli Sea Dweller and a Blancpain FF in gold, so obviously there are people who can afford a Sub that might choose a Pelagos. Rolex is a great watch, but SOME Rolex owner are beyond annoying. You want a watch that will go better with a suit, go Roli, it is a sharp, time tested watch, but if you are looking for the better tool watch the Pelagos is superior - it is arguably the best modern day actual tool watch.
