Love the tutorials. I have started turning on a low end lathe and find I use a combination of the carbide tipped and standard HSS tools. I really liked the tutorial on the skew chisel and I am practicing that per your video. Wish I could add a picture of one of my small lidded boxes I am making for Christmas gifts this year. I can do these thanks to your video tutorials. Thanks again!

Another great tutorial Mike, just what the doctor ordered for this beginner! only yesterday I tried hollowing out end grain on a glued up blank of segmented stathes similar to one of your earlier videos, and got into a real right mess to the point where I must admit I became disheartened, however you've just helped regain my confidence! I'm sure the RIGHT tool and the RIGHT way will now give me better results - I ain't giving up !! so thank you again for another video into my tutorial folder, cheers, Tony (from uk)

Thanks for the video with some useful tips.
I notice you started the video wearing a T shirt and a heater behind your good self but finished it without the aforementioned heater but now wearing a jacket!!!.
I grew up with pine, or deal as we used to call it, as a carpenter and joiner and l like it, when it is properly hand planed and sanded.
Keep on rabbiting, l enjoy it.

I bought my first lathe 2 weeks ago. I have been watching videos constantly to learn, and you are one of the best teachers! I am concentrating on the correct tools, sharpening methods, and presenting the chisel to the wood properly, of course safety first! I bought a 10x18 lathe, face shield, 8 piece harbor freight lathe HSS chisel set ($65. U.S., inexpensive, but I want to learn to sharpen correctly with this set), and a really good chuck, a Nova Precision Midi.I also bought a Rockler full size round carbide tool ($75 on sale! LOL). My first project was a spindle, creating various cuts. Second project, I made a wooden hammer. Third project was a pencil cup. I really enjoy turning, and videos like yours help us beginners to see how things are done RIGHT. I bought a Wolverine grinding system with a Vari-grind jig. That gets here tomorrow. No more turning until I sharpen these tools. (I bought the carbide tool to keep going, LOL). Looking forward to the explanation between the spindle and bowl gouges!

Good tips about forester bits Mike. So many times I've seen people go straight in with a large bit and wind up up with it burned and blunt or stuck in the wood. Great video once more. Nice to see you at Harrogate. The Yorkshireman.

Thank you so much for live speed examples. All the high-speed footage everyone does makes it look like you can move so much faster than you actually can. It's much easier to learn when someone such as yourself gives us the instruction at actual speed of cut.
Also, is it just me, or does anyone else blow at the screen trying to clear the chips and dust? I just realized I was doing it and it made me wonder.
Hi Thomas, I am guilty of fast speed videos when turning a piece, but not with what I would call a tutorial, such as this. As far as the blowing the dust away ... I really don't know about other people .. but I know I do! ;)

Thanks Mike. I love the 6 mm carbide for end grain. You can soon hog some wood out. I've not tried using it at 45 degrees though. Will have to give that a go.

Great informative video Mike, I don't particularly like end grain hollowing but some projects require it, I'm teaching a class this weekend to turn a captive ring goblet and hollowing end grain is the part I'm dreading beginners doing..
last thing I want them to do is get a catch and throw the blank across the floor 😬

Thanks Mike! I'm making a knock for the coffee machine in our college staff room, and this may be just what I need to turn up a drum to tap out our grounds into. :-) Yes, the wood teachers live there, but it's assessment time and they're all way too busy.

Good, helpful advice and tips, Mike. I can see this helping lots of turners. My preference is for spindle gouges - I've not had much success with carbide yet, but I haven't tried my Simon Hope 6mm carbide tool yet (only bought it in September...sigh...). Cheers!

As a newby and someone having problems with hollowing end grain, I found the vid quite informative. I agree with George Whitfield in that most demos are too quick, we need to understand the set up such as tool rest height, speed etc, so thank you.
