    The lathe is cheap, but it punches slightly above its weight for that price. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxKGVtPhqZBB5AQXXFlU2kdd4mQhO6wlhl Its not that powerful, the working area is very narrow, and the tailstock effectively moves less than an inch. However, this is a pen lathe at its core and none of those things matter for that. This will turn pens without issue. By far the nicest feature is the adjustable speed and overall size. If you have a small worksurface this is a great option. One thing i have not seen in the reviews (maybe I didn't look hard enough) is that the tool rest has been updated for the 3421 over the 3420. The tool rest can now be set to sit well below the center line of the spindle. Given this was the largest complaint the community seemed to have for the 3420, I'm surprised WEN doesn't include this more in their marketing material.

    People like you make the internet, and specifically You Tube, worthwhile. If this stuff went viral, rather than some capricious display of idiocy, I would have much more faith in the future of humanity. Thank you for taking the time to tutor me in the fine art of turning.

    As others have stated, we are here because we want to learn. Make an hour long one and we will still be here. Thank you for your valuable time and for passing on this trade to others. As of 10 minutes ago i just put my used lathe together and very excited to take my first try at turning.

    Great tutorial on making a box Mike.
    The best thing, you only used the basic turning tools, not the carbide tools, as most of the beginning turners don't have the carbide tools.
    The Sapele is surprisingly forgiving when turned. It's one of the exotic woods I am using (I bought a board 2 years ago and take off a small piece when needed, as it's the most expensive stuff I got here). You are absolutely right when you say that you'd been surprised by the fine dust it produces, rather then shavings, wearing some sort of lung protection is recommended, although I personally love the smell of Sapele being cut. I also love the almost golden sparks on the finished surface.
    At the moment I am turning a piece of Birch and this feels like a hard rubber and sanding is the most horrible thing I've ever done as the paper gets clogged very fast.
    What happened to the lid? It seems like you sanded it flat, I think this fits nicer to the overall simple shape of the box. I still have to find a way to make my boxes without a self centering chuck, but I'll get there one day in the near future.
    Greetings from Good Old Germany
    Peter

      @MikeWaldt  10 лет назад

      Thank you Peter, as always your comments are very welcomed, and appreciated. The lid as you say I decided to flatten off a bit, just felt it was more in keeping with the simple form of the piece. See....we agree again....lol.

      Mike Waldt hi Mike...I am new to wood turning and I’ve been watching your videos which are very helpful. With respect to the boxes, can you tell me if it’s normal for the box bottom to shrink more than the lid??...I’ve made a couple of these and I use the Forster bit to take out most of the wood in the bottom which gets fairly warm and I presume moves a lot of moisture out. Even though at the time of turning the lid is tight on, within 24 hours, the lid is loose. This has happened with a piece of Ash and Yew (green wood)
      Thanks
      PS, very nice videos, and useful.

    Many thanks for that Mike, I'm new to turning and was really struggling with using a spindle gouge to hollow out the inside of my timber - just getting nothing but horrible catches. Having watched this a couple of times I've just spent an hour or so up in my shed with a piece of freshly felled sweet chestnut and I have a nice smoothly hollowed cylinder to show for it. I even managed to get the catch marks I got here and there out with the gouge once I'd got the hang of it! I'm very pleased and hope to go on to make a box or two once I've got some drier wood. Your clarity and skill is much appreciated.

    Very nice box Mike, and a very helpful demonstration.
    I use a forstner bit to start my hollowing, and usually end up trying to fit part of the rest inside the box to keep the chattering down.
    Keep up the good work. RUclips taught folks like me need videos like this.

    Mike, your beginners guides are great. You probably have many more experienced people watching this and they may feel it's too long.. but, consider you have said "Beginners Guide" the nay sayers should take that into account. I'm a beginner.. truly a beginner as you can count my projects on less than two hands. For ME, the length of the guides are excellent.. as is your detailed description of what you are doing and why. Please make additions to your Beginners Guide series as they help me make sense of the "how's".
