Thank you, Mike, for showing and explaining the various steps along the way. I am still a beginner and looking for information, help, as I go. I lucked into this #5 guide to start with and now have found the other videos in the series. I appreciate your making this series of training helps.
Thank you Mike for all the time you give making these videos that are so informative and in my opinion essential for beginners when you do not have a club nearby to join. I have learned so much from you and I like your style of instruction. I will watch them several times until I too can produce a finish to be happy with. Best wishes from a fellow Taff.
Mike, been watching your videos as I learn how to turn. Can't tell you enough how helpful they are. I was just struggling with making a bowl, watched your video, had a few "ah ha" moments and went back to the lathe to find it much easier with your instruction. thanks a million.
David Blehar I'm so pleased that it was of some use to you David, my "ah ha" moments usually come when I've turned through something.....lol. Thanks for your support mate. Take care Mike
Have not even started turning yet so just trying to get some ideas on what lies ahead. This series is at an ideal level for me and have downloaded so will re-watch when that lathe gets delivered. Fantastic series Mike and if I was not inspired enough before.... I certainly am now so many thanks. p.s. the bloomers are also brilliant. You have a very natural, no nonsense approach. I like that. Cheers Mike.
This has to be one of the best 'for beginners' videos I've watched Mike. Clear, concise & very enjoyable. Thanks for the valuable advice, it is appreciated very much & you along with many of the 'names' you can't remember have helped my journey into understanding this incredible craft more than you could possibly know. Regards ........ Geof
Mike, I was struggling today. Ultimately I decided I needed to go back to my basics. When I decided to do that, I came back to this video. Your video solved my issue and reminded me of the fundamentals. You are a scholar, and I appreciate you making these resources available for others as well as for me.
Thank you again for the details on the bowl gouge. I really do appreciate the way you explain the position of the your body and tool to the bowl and why certain things happen as my end grain roughness because of not rubbing the bevel.... I also have made four goblets from your video on them... I made a 9" tall oak down to a 3" , 1- 1/2" diameter one... thanks again
Mike Your beginner videos are so helpful. I am putting them good use. Keep up the good work. Watching these videos over and over and get a little more every time I watch. Thanks again. Richard Coyle
Thank you for this video like I said before I'm just starting to use the lathe again after a few years off. This will really help me to turn some bowl. Thanks again. Dale

Hello Mike. I am a newbie. Been turning about a year. Mostly end grain Boxes and finials. Made all my own Carbide cutters and deep hollowing tools. I just picked up a Henry Taylor 1/2" Bowl Gouge just for finishing cuts. What a beast! Love this thing. Thanks for all the great instructional videos. Ron
Love your videos Mike I have just watched bowl gouge for beginners as I have been having real problems thanks for restoring a modicum of confidence in myself. All the best Richard
well done mike Interesting video thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge i love the bloopers so i am not the only nut out there trying to talk to a camera and the mind goes blank some times i just walk out the door for bit and come back worst you wouldn't believe the amount of crazy stuff i cut out LOL All the best Robbie
Thanks Robbie, I don't think it matters how long you do videos, the blank mind, the massive editing and cutting never seems to get any better....lol. I'd love to see your bloopers matey;). I still remember your sharpening video a while back, and you were laughing after saying "I'll show you how to sharpen your tool" ! Take care my friend Mike
Hi Mike, I am just starting out with wood turning and I wanted to thank you for your instructional videos. Can't tell you enough how much it has helped me personally. Thanks again for dedicating your time for us beginners!!
Thanks for the series Mike , it's great for us who think we should know all this stuff but don't and are now too embarrassed to ask!! Now I can act like I knew it all a long !!! Looking forward to the next one, thanks again . Trev
Hi Mike, This was so explained. It gave me a new insight into using the bowl gouge. I have had reasonable success ( enough that i have been able to do stuff) but this has given me such a greater insight into using it well. Many thanks Paul
great video Mike , very informative , only starting out turning on a cheap lathe but hoping to upgrade , great tips you are giving , keep them coming , Mick
Thank you ever so much! I only have the internet to learn from. There is no one in driving distance that I can learn from. You answered a lot of questions for me in this video.
Thanks very much for your descriptions of the correct use of the gouges. I am a beginner at turning, and I found the spindle gouge very daunting at firrst. But thanks to your video's ( and others) I am finally beginning to understand the concepts. Thanks for your insight to the beginner,s problems, I am more confident now, but have a very long way to go.! (By the way good to see your Bells Palsy is improving greatly.!)
hi Steve, i am really happy to hear that you find the beginners series of use. Thanks for your kind words and support, they are very much appreciated. Take care Mike
Hi Mike thank you very much for taking the time to do these videos, I have just been given a perform ccsl wood lathe and was bought a set of Robert sorby chisels for Christmas, watching your videos have been a god send for me as, I am a keen woodworker but never delved into turning into now. I think it always scared me but now I have had a go its not so scary. I am limited at the moment as I do not have a chuck so I will have to turn a bowl using my faceplate. I have successfully following your videos cut a few spindles with coves and beads. Anyway I am waffling now thank you again and keep up the good work as I enjoy your videos
Hi James, I am really pleased to hear that you are enjoying your new found craft, and that I have contributed a little . Once you get a chuck, a whole lot more options open up for you. However, there are some pros that never use a chuck, so they are not essential...but I like them :) Cheers Mike
Needed to watch this again. This time I can see that the first pass , as a scraper, yielded dust similar to what comes off a card scraper when doing 'flat work'. Learnin new stuff all the time!
Hi Mike, Edinburgh calling, complete beginner. I have spent about 20 times more watching your (and others) videos than at the lathe (Draper mini) but have learned so much I think, it's just amazing. What I have found is you have to dive in with the new toy (or at least I did) , make a mess of your work (hopefully safely) and then go back to the instructors to see what happened. That's my experience this afternoon with my first attempt at a tiny oak bowl. Catch at the very end threw it off the glue chuck and that's that. There's just so much to take in. Anyway I just wanted to say an enormous thank you for the time and effort you put in to sharing your knowledge but also your focus on beginners as well. Cheers!
Thanks Mike. I am a subscriber and watch you regularly. This was very, very helpful. The grind was where I was going wrong. I had a concave grind! Cheers
Mike great videos for beginners. Your videos have helped me to know how to hold my tools and what part of the tool I should be cutting with. Thanks so much.
I was wondering when you were going to do another video. I thought you had took up needle point work or knitting. Finally bloopers! I knew you weren't perfect. I laughed and laughed. I could watch you screwing up for days on end. Great bowl gouge video. The Irish grind is my go to tool. That was your best instructional yet I did enjoy watching it. Can't wait until the next one. Thanks for your time and effort Mikey.
Great video mike. I actually saw some things in a different light and learned something. Keep up the videos and as we all jnow turners never make mistakes only design changes. And I just loved the bloopers, sound like me most of the time.
I’m new to turning and tear out is a bugger. Just about to give up. Just watched this you mike your the first person who I got. I get it now and wow your brilliant. It’s not 100% yet but since following this video I can say I’m 100% better than before. Can’t Thankyou enough
thanks for the video. I've recently bought my first "proper" bowl gouge and I've found that it's not exactly a beginner chisel. I mean to say that it's not entirely self explanatory. so this video is a very useful guide.
Thanks for another instructional video. I have only made a few bowls but in your last 2 videos I have learned so much about the importance of the bevel. I used what I learned on a cypress bowl blank. I am like you in that I work crazy hours so I was trying too hard to get my turnings done. This took away from the enjoyment of turning. I now understand what Cap'n Eddie meant by every cut being a practice cut.
I was also doing my scraping wrong so you taught me the correct way. I can never repay you for the information these videos have shown me. A sincere thanks!
Thanks James, it is really annoying how work gets in the way of turning ;) So pleased that you got some useful information from the videos. Thanks again for your continued support, and encouragement. Take care Mike
Great video, informative, detailed and to the points, it does not matter how much I use the bowl gouge, I'm still a little scared of it at times, especially when I use it to hollow (don't have other hollowing tools, for now), but I did just ordered my first 5/8th bowl gouge, to supplement my 3/8th deep fluted bowl gouge which I used so far for just about everything.
Thanks Yuval, enjoy your new Bowl Gouge :). If your not sure of the cut your about to make, turn the work slowly by hand, and present the tool until you get a nice shaving, that will give you an indicator of how to proceed. Take care Mike
As always, well explained and informative. Your videos are getting better and better. I love the outtakes, glad it's not just me :D It's actually *really* hard to explain how to do something in this way. When you do anything regularly, you get the feel for it. Very few of us analyse how it actually happens. I am guessing you are learning loads in the making of the beginners series just by having to analyse what you do. Many thanks as always. I have a lathe now and my workshop is almost there. Just need a chuck and some turning chisels and I will have to start at the beginning of your videos again!
Thanks Ian, I really appreciate your continued support, and encouragement. I think it's true to say that I learn a little, every time I fire up the lathe. I am one of those annoying people that like to know the reason for things, so when I get a catch, I want to know why, not just the solution to stop it, if you see what I mean :) Looking forward to hearing from you when your shop is up and running my friend. Take care Mike
Beautiful turning Mike and a good refresher for those with some experience and a great lesson for beginners. As an aside I noted that someone kindly sent you some wood and among it was a length of mahonia. I spotted 4 similar pieces on ebay about a year ago and bought them as I have friends whose house is named mahonia. I turned 2 candlesticks for them as a surprise with Ahem! captive rings which I learned how to do from you. The wood is amazingly yellow and when I had the candlesticks finished I set them aside for a few days and on my return they had split along the full length and even cracked my beautiful rings. They were obviously far too fresh so I must get round to trying the other two. It's just to let you know really that mahonia must be the most yellow coloured wood there is. Best wishes, Alan.
Thanks Alan, Keith did tell me that the Mahonia needs quite a while to dry, it is waxed, so before I turn it I'll make sure the moisture content is right down. Thanks for the "heads up" my friend. I couldn't believe how yellow it looks, quite stunning. Take care Mike
Great videos Mike! I took a beginning class this weekend. And this video reinforced some of what I learned.....especially about riding the bevel.....:-)
Hi Mike Great tutorial as usual Your gouge sharpening looks really good!! Its something I must work on but at the moment I do not have a jig. My gouges look like faceted diamonds!! So many things to buy and so little money. It makes the job so much easier with good sharp tools. Love the out-takes
Thanks Andy, sharp tools are essential, and a lot safer too. If you watch Brendan Stemp's video on free hand sharpening, it'll give you some food for thought, I'll put the link below :) Take care Mike Sharpening Woodturning Tools Freehand
Hello, mike thanks for sharing as usual. I have been intimated by the bowl gouge after repeatedly not being able to use the one I have. I use a round carbide cutter tool that I made my self and it works really well except, tool marks. after watching your video I will try and tackle the bowl gouge again, I will watch Brendan's video before I attempt. I will be practicing tomorrow on a few bowls so wish me luck
Great video, once again, Mike! I learned quite a bit. Loved the Bloopers, too! Now if I could just figure out how to not do that "one more pass" and stop making funnels! David
How did I miss this one? Great video Mike, you solved a problem for me - that transition across the bottom, I go too fast. Loved the bloopers, if I did that on my videos you'd be here all night, it's easier for me to just do the whole video again. I am making progress in the shed, ordered two tool boxes with drawers to put on a shelf under the lathe to try to get some sort of order into my tools. I've found about 7 or 8 really good tools I'd forgotten I had bought while I was tidying up and that's not even the job right started! More later. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Love your videos, I took a couple classes 4 years ago and then couldn't get to my shop for a couple of years and am trying to sort things out as to what it what. Showing Spindle gouge next to a bowel gouge and point out the differences would be helpful.
Thank you Sir, much appreciated. Good point, I am doing a revisiting the beginners guide series and will try and remember your suggestion to include in one of the videos. Take care Mike
Hi Mike, very helpful video (s) ive been turning for a little over a year and your videos have answered many questions keep up the good work happy holidays. Rich
Very nice Mike, thank you, The close up views of gouge grind profile and whilst cutting are excellent, just what we need. If I got it correct, while on outside of bowl, pull cutting does not involve riding the bevel, whereas push cutting does require riding the bevel. Cheers Bill
Bill Wells Thanks Bill, actually you do ride the bevel on a pull cut, the video possibly doesn't show it that well, it's when shear scraping with the gouge, that you don't ride the bevel, but close the flute right up, and just use the wing, in a scraping cut. Hope this clarifies it. Cheers Mike
Hi Mike, once again you have provided an excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to do this, it is VERY MUCH appreciated. I have been turning for about three months now, and always await new videos from you. They are always informative and well presented. I have turned a few bowls, but always struggled with using the bowl gouge, resorting to using a scraper to remove everything below about one inch in depth. Now I feel I have a better understanding, and can't wait to try the technique you have shown. Liked the bloopers too lol. Finally, how is your better half getting on counting the bristles on that brush you used to clean up the shop lol. Take care, and thank you, Clive
Thank you Clive, you are very kind. I'm really glad that the video gave you some food for thought. My good lady is STILL counting them, as she keeps having to restart, poor lass forgets where she is! ;) Take care Mike
Thanks Mike,
A very informative and helpful video. You beginners guide videos have explained and made techniques of turning much easier to understand. I look forward to the next one.

Joan Busby Thanks Joan, I'm glad you find them useful. Enjoy your new craft.

Lol...thanks Tom me ol' mate.
I could actually keep you entertained for days on end....if I showed all my regular screw ups! ;
Take care mate

love the bloopers Mike, gave me a good chuckle.

Great video mike. I actually saw some things in a different light and learned something. Keep up the videos and as we all jnow turners never make mistakes only design changes. And I just loved the bloopers, sound like me most of the time.
Thanks Terry, I am continually changing my designs, I assure you ;)

Thanks Mike. Yet another very informative video. Still struggeling in using the bowl gouge when hollowing. I guess i just keep on trying! Take care.

I love the gag reel at the end, just like the movies!
I could not for the life of me remember the word "blooper"
😂😂
I’m new to turning and tear out is a bugger. Just about to give up. Just watched this you mike your the first person who I got. I get it now and wow your brilliant. It’s not 100% yet but since following this video I can say I’m 100% better than before. Can’t Thankyou enough
My absolute pleasure Wayne, happy to hear that the video was of some use.
Good show Mike, very well done. I really like how you show the how to do it with the why to do it. Thanks.
Thanks Tom, appreciate your encouraging words.

Great instructional video Mike.
Thanks Ken

Mike
thanks for the video. I've recently bought my first "proper" bowl gouge and I've found that it's not exactly a beginner chisel. I mean to say that it's not entirely self explanatory. so this video is a very useful guide.
Glad to have been of some help Brian, and thanks for the nice comment.

Thanks James, it is really annoying how work gets in the way of turning ;)
So pleased that you got some useful information from the videos.
Thanks again for your continued support, and encouragement.

Excellent job Mike, I really like this series you're doing.

As always, well explained and informative. Your videos are getting better and better. I love the outtakes, glad it's not just me :D
It's actually *really* hard to explain how to do something in this way.
I am one of those annoying people that like to know the reason for things, so when I get a catch, I want to know why, not just the solution to stop it, if you see what I mean :)
Looking forward to hearing from you when your shop is up and running my friend.

Best wishes,
Alan.
Thanks Alan, Keith did tell me that the Mahonia needs quite a while to dry, it is waxed, so before I turn it I'll make sure the moisture content is right down. Thanks for the "heads up" my friend. I couldn't believe how yellow it looks, quite stunning.

Hi Mike
Great tutorial as usual
Your gouge sharpening looks really good!!
If you watch Brendan Stemp's video on free hand sharpening, it'll give you some food for thought, I'll put the link below :)

Good luck David, let me know how you get on.

Great video, once again, Mike! I learned quite a bit. Loved the Bloopers, too! Now if I could just figure out how to not do that "one more pass" and stop making funnels!
David
Thanks David, if we "pool" our funnels, maybe we could start a business selling them, with my stash we'll have loads of stock! ;)

Thanks Brendan, better late than never as the actress said to the bishop! nice to find some tools you'd forgotten you had :)

Hi Mike, very helpful video (s) ive been turning for a little over a year and your videos have answered many questions keep up the good work happy holidays. Rich
Richard Klingman Hi Rich, thanks for your kind words, and I'm very happy that you find some use from my videos.
Merry Christmas
Mike
Very nice Mike, thank you,
The close up views of gouge grind profile and whilst cutting are excellent, just what we need.
If I got it correct, while on outside of bowl, pull cutting does not involve riding the bevel, whereas push cutting does require riding the bevel.
Cheers
Bill
Bill Wells Thanks Bill, actually you do ride the bevel on a pull cut, the video possibly doesn't show it that well, it's when shear scraping with the gouge, that you don't ride the bevel, but close the flute right up, and just use the wing, in a scraping cut.
Hope this clarifies it.
Cheers
Mike
Mike Waldt OK, thanks Mike. Between you and Brendan I will get it right.Bill
Awsome tips. Thank you from Australia :)
My pleasure Rohan, glad you found the video useful.
Great video Mike, I am planning to turn my first bowl this coming weekend
Thanks Steve, let me know how you get on.

Mike
Take care, and thank you,
Clive
Thank you Clive, you are very kind. I'm really glad that the video gave you some food for thought.
My good lady is STILL counting them, as she keeps having to restart, poor lass forgets where she is! ;)
