This switch looks and works different yes, but we have singular switch that simply pulls all 3 phase switches in a row with delay to prevent ark and damage on even smaller substations. so technically you can just pull it and shut whole station, tho not in the same manner as in this movie.
Fun fact: the dream scene was cut from the original release of the film and was not even fully animated for the first DvD release in the bonus features, and now has become a permanent part of the film on most streaming services. The original reason for the cut was too keep the Giants origins a mystery throughout the film. Because at the end of the day, it does not matter where you came from or what your original purpose was, what matters is what you do in the present and "who you choose to be".
I think the reason they didn't put it in originally was so that when it does go apeshit and enters its decepticon form it is more shocking. Afterall, all you have seen up until now is this gentle giant, who couldn't possibly ever hurt anybody, and then, suddently, it turns into this absolute planet-killing monster, it's a pretty huge impact. But then, I guess, way too many people missed the fact that the robot is MEANT to be a planet-killing monster but instead it CHOOSES to be a gentle giant, so they probably added the scene about it's past in order to reinforce even more this idea that, yes, the robot is meant to be evil but instead it chooses to be good. To be honest I'm like 90% sure that without that scene I'd have totally missed the point and I'd have just thought "eh, the robot just went crazy because the kid got hurt" and I wouldn't have put much more thought about it. So yeah, I'm glad it's there, yes it does kinda ruin the reveal for the smart guys but it's a kid's movie afterall, it's not inception, it's supposed to bring all the people along until the end.
It is said that when interviewed, someone asked why the director made this film, and the director responded that he made this film in honor of his sister who died from a gun shot, and he asked the question, “What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?” Knowing that back story made me love this film even more so. This movie doesn't get the credit it deserves, so thank you for reviewing it, so that it can get more exposure and more people would want to go and watch it. It deserves a bigger fanbase.

Thank you, I thought I was going crazy! I have seen the movie a million times and I have never seen that scene. I personally prefer the ambiguity of where the giant comes from and his history being a mystery, but I do see the value of a scene like that
Apparently that is the case, it goes against the message of "being who you choose to be." I remember watching it as a kid without those scenes and I prefer it that way.
@@natem1579 Well no, it does the opposite. It shows it was made as a machine of war, its very purpose is to be a weapon, but it ultimately chooses to not be a weapon. It's even more being who you choose to be, because it shows that even if your whole life was planned out by someone else, you still hold the power to be who you want to be. This extends the message to people that have overbearing parents and in a culture where pre-arranged marriages are a thing, removing the excuse of your life being actively controlled is different to the giant's freedom and thus it is impossible to do what the giant did and become your own. They essentially ensured the message just reaches everyone, because I doubt there's anyone with a life more controlled than literally being made and programmed to be something someone else chose.

I like that everyone seems to ignore the idea that the iron giant was sent to earth to conquer it and only by shear luck did it fail to do so. which also implies that whatever civilization that sent it there would probably bring a lot more force having just seen its first attack fail so miserably.
I've seen many reaction channels react to this movie and you seem to be the only RUclipsr who ever talks about how the Giant is very precise about fixing the train tracks.
1:40 Hey there, my Father was an electrical engineer, and I remember him laughing at how impractical this bit is, back when he took me to see this film as a kid. So yeah, no way they’d leave that switch so easily accessible. It’s also unlikely it’d be so cartoonishly big. But hey, I suppose the operative term at play here is “cartoonish”, lol.
The book this is based on is pretty wild. A moon dragon comes down at one point and tries to eat everyone and the iron giant tries to protect the earth.
@@mehmeh_ It's one book there is a sequel called the iron woman. Its called Iron Giant by Ted Hughes it was written in 1968. If you want to see a pretty good summary of it check out Classics Explained The Iron Giant by Jon Solo on RUclips
Given how long it would take to build a metal statue of the giant, I assume that the army already had studied the shit out of the last remaining piece and come to the conclusion that it was just a very advanced screw or something that was basically useless to them. Either that or the general, having witnessed the devastation that the giant caused, decided that it was probably not a good idea to try to develop the technology to build their own.
Maybe it doesn't seem like a good idea, but it is 100% necessary in order to defend the earth, they just found out a giant mech capable of untold devastation that was friendly because of sheer luck, and the aliens that build it may send more So you better plan something to deal with that
Tbf the General would have exactly zero say in the matter of R&D. The General likely kept it for his ‘Me’ wall assuming it was in fact just a screw, while any known pieces went to ARPA for study and reverse engineering.
As a Wikipedia electrician, having the switch out in the open like that is optimal just for situations like this when a 10 year old is passing by and needs to heroically shut off the power because everyone knows that electricity is empathetic and won’t shock and kill children
Fun fact The kinda theme of this movie was taken from the fact that the directors sister got shot by an abusive husband, so the director thought that he'd make this movie around "a gun that didn't want to be a gun" like how we see the iron giant trying to be what he wants, instead of a "gun"
I am so proud of myself that as a kid I asked “Why did he put the flashlight on like that? He’ll just shoot himself in the foot because it won’t come out the barrel like it should and bounce off the light”

You know, with an ending like that, there should absolutely be a sequel. Although, not now. Or at least people that grew up with the movie, and like it should do it. NO POP CULTURE REFERENCES, NO SHAMELESS DANCING SCENES.
And most importantly...
ABSOLUTELY NO POLITICS!!!
@@jacknedry3925 the movie was very political though. To no end it discusses the Cold War, nuclear weapons, etc. If they make a sequel, it will have to go hard. Playing it safe just makes it boring like literally every movie as of recent
I think it’s safer to remain untouched, there are countless examples of unliked sequels, even without the above
@@thewiseoldfox,
I meant MODERN politics.
The iron giant does a fortnite dance
This is one of my favorite animated sci-fi movies ever made and the fact that it happens around the 1950's just makes it even better.
I like that everyone seems to ignore the idea that the iron giant was sent to earth to conquer it and only by shear luck did it fail to do so.
which also implies that whatever civilization that sent it there would probably bring a lot more force having just seen its first attack fail so miserably.
So, a sequel when the alien civilization send more giants to earth, then?
Nah iron giant will train and become a super iron giant and defeat iron frieza
Basically Invincible?
soo... like Omni-man?
Fake news, the giant actually was separated from his batallion, he came alone because he was a'drift
did you know the whole movie was hand-animated except for the giant, which was actually computer-animated to look like it was drawn by hand.
Makes sense, the Giant always looked different with his three-dimensional animation. Worked well to make him otherworldly as well.
I've seen many reaction channels react to this movie and you seem to be the only RUclipsr who ever talks about how the Giant is very precise about fixing the train tracks.
2:06 that hair movement is absolutely crazy bro
This is honestly one of my favorite movies I've ever watched, it is an honor to see the Giant get High with the Bois

Hey there, my Father was an electrical engineer, and I remember him laughing at how impractical this bit is, back when he took me to see this film as a kid.
Can you give more info on the book? Or books? Is it a series? If it is then which volume did it happen in?
@@mehmeh_ It's one book there is a sequel called the iron woman. Its called Iron Giant by Ted Hughes it was written in 1968. If you want to see a pretty good summary of it check out Classics Explained The Iron Giant by Jon Solo on RUclips
@@mehmeh_ it's a joke dude
Given how long it would take to build a metal statue of the giant, I assume that the army already had studied the shit out of the last remaining piece and come to the conclusion that it was just a very advanced screw or something that was basically useless to them. Either that or the general, having witnessed the devastation that the giant caused, decided that it was probably not a good idea to try to develop the technology to build their own.
I prefer the latter
Maybe it doesn't seem like a good idea, but it is 100% necessary in order to defend the earth, they just found out a giant mech capable of untold devastation that was friendly because of sheer luck, and the aliens that build it may send more
So you better plan something to deal with that
@@Alejandro_One_and_Only Yeah but.
How are you gonna reverse-engineer doomsday weapons from a screw that basically is only able to roll around.
The general must really hate kids since giving a radioactive piece of metal to a child is just a stupid thing to do
Tbf the General would have exactly zero say in the matter of R&D.
5:30 this made me laugh so hard the fact that he throws away the car instantly

Pretty much what happened with my generation the first time they killed Optimus Prime in 86.
But is it jiff or gif
Him saying "yay" at the end and not " ooo" tell you this is a 10/10 movie
Fun fact
The kinda theme of this movie was taken from the fact that the directors sister got shot by an abusive husband, so the director thought that he'd make this movie around "a gun that didn't want to be a gun" like how we see the iron giant trying to be what he wants, instead of a "gun"
I am so proud of myself that as a kid I asked “Why did he put the flashlight on like that? He’ll just shoot himself in the foot because it won’t come out the barrel like it should and bounce off the light”
"isnt the army supposed to be quick and efficient and shit?"
Thats the funniest thing you've said this entire video.
Still my favourite style of animation ive ever seen on a full length cartoon movie. Got this on VHS in the early 2000s and definitely still is my most watched cartoon of all time.
