I remember the first I time watched this movie, I was like 9, on a plane and thought to myself this looks like a cool kids movie. And then movie proceeded to scare the living shit out of me, It was so utterly creepy. I had nightmares about it for months. And I still vividly remember the movie 11 years later.

SO many children were watching what they thought was a child's show only to find Satan trying to tell them that all life was pointless and humans were all evil and destructive.

There's actually a lot of witch and faerie lore in this work, not the least of which is that candy loop which looks exactly like a 'hagstone' used to see through witchy deceptions. The witch herself is called the 'Beldam' in the book, a very traditional witch name in folklore. And the reason they used to dunk women in water to see if they were witches is because it was thought that the pure and natural element would simply reject the witch (much like vampires and running water). So the witch would float instead of drown and they'd burn or hang her. So putting the key at the bottom of the well should, in theory, be one of the few places the witch CAN'T get to or influence.

it's worse in the book. in the book, shortly after Other Father tries, and fails, to help her escape the Beldam, she goes to the cellar of the Other house during a break the Beldam gave her. she finds Other Father there, in his true form. a pile of clay. he shapes a mouth for himself and explains that he truly loves her and wants to help her escape, but the Beldam's influence is too strong. his own free will then collapses, and the Beldam then makes him attack Coraline, who escapes. the worst part of it is that he still is aware of what's happening while the Beldam controlled him, as he says "I'm sorry" as he attacks.

I watched the whole commentary for this movie and it was genuinely fascinating. It's been a while but from what I remember Coraline has something like 1000 unique facial poses. Also everything including inanimate objects like Coraline's doll is puppetted with tiny wires in order to make the movements more lifelike. It's not your standard horror; can't do standard horror for a "kids movie" so they went for a very psychological horror instead, and that's just... much scarier than the typical stuff. I grew up watching horror too and this was one of the few movies that really unnerved me, despite being a favorite too.
You have to consider the fact that Coraline just moved to Oregon, so she has the right to be afraid of that meow. Florida may have some big ass alligators, but in Washington and Oregon, we got mountain lions and bobcats

it's worse in the book. in the book, shortly after Other Father tries, and fails, to help her escape the Beldam, she goes to the cellar of the Other house during a break the Beldam gave her. she finds Other Father there, in his true form. a pile of clay. he shapes a mouth for himself and explains that he truly loves her and wants to help her escape, but the Beldam's influence is too strong. his own free will then collapses, and the Beldam then makes him attack Coraline, who escapes. the worst part of it is that he still is aware of what's happening while the Beldam controlled him, as he says "I'm sorry" as he attacks.

I watched the whole commentary for this movie and it was genuinely fascinating. It's been a while but from what I remember Coraline has something like 1000 unique facial poses. Also everything including inanimate objects like Coraline's doll is puppetted with tiny wires in order to make the movements more lifelike.
In short they put a ridiculous amount of effort into this movie and it needs to be commended
