@@munrostrachan4294 no. I got it because I have plenty of FW50 for my ZV-E10. I would still suggest save a bit more and go more Nikon Z7(first gen) as a minimum.
For me - landscape, occasional wildlife & street photographer - this has the features I'm missing in my A7Riii. Focus stacking and the multi-axis screen are huge in terms of actual usage and enjoyment of shooting with the camera. They might seem trivial things compared to the autofocus and resolution. Seriously, and this might sound bizarre, if the A7RV had had a normal swivel screen like the A7IV I would not be saving like mad for it.
I've had the a7R III and the a6 series since 2017 since 2019 and it's been in constant use, but I can't say that I've really enjoyed using it. Produced great results but definitely wasn't enjoyable throughout. Still, can't really beat Sony for bang for the buck, especially if you use third-party lenses. Been following their releases to see what's been improved with each generation and the A1 had me hopeful but cautious (given that it's a halo product). Looks like this addressed the major pain points (poor responsiveness, poor back LCD resolution, tilt-only back LCD, no lossless compressed, uneven SD card slots, awful menus, button and dial issues, etc). Wish it hadn't taken them so long, but looks like they've finally fixed those long-time issues. Looking forward to purchasing this on the used market once prices go down.
At this point in my life, I'm sure that A7RM4 will be last the camera I own. But I strongly recommend this camera to youngsters because they'll enjoy using it just as I'm enjoying my A7RM4. For me, the only feature that I could be jealous of would be that fully articulating backscreen. 📷

Not worth upgrading from a previous generation body. But as someone switching systems, especially for me from a 15 year old Olympus kit, I am in heaven jumping into Full Frame with Sony at this time. The AF tech is just phenomenal, the EVF best in class, 8-stop IBIS, focus stacking, 200+MP stills and massive resolution at 10FPS all give me extreme flexibility and ease of use. Yes I wish it had a speedy electronic shutter option at lower resolutions but fwiw I think it offers incredible value over the 50MP A1 cost $2000 more.
Your review was great, enough detailed photos and videos to prove your point. I like the camera. However, is there any other brands that are close to this models performance? That bit of protective would have made this review perfect. Still great work, you guys know your stuff!
Thanks Chris! I'm peacefully returning to my Lumix S5, with my entire kit built out in 2500 USD (going to 3500 with the 100-400 or 70-300 Zoom soon). This is a fantastic camera, but you could probably get by with a used a7R 3 + new a7 IV at this price point, and have the best of all worlds :)
I pre-ordered an a7r2 back in the day and have been shooting it ever since. Still a great camera, but I wouldn't mind upgrading. The thing that's kept me from buying a new camera is the newer A7r5, A7c and A7 iv all have worse ISO performance than my 7 year old camera.
Nice video guys, thanks! After talking about the high res mode I was expecting to see that background man smoothed out? A smoother sound mix and I'm a fan of the end music fade-up. (funny reverb on the bench shot?)
Kudos to Sony, especially on that multi-axis screen. They actually anticipated the possible complaints and took care of that right out of the gate! As a still photographer I love the convenient simple old tilt feature on my Rii and I was afraid of losing that if I upgraded. 😃
Some nice new features, but you can get a Sony A7R IVa in as new condition for £2300, so an extra £1700 would be difficult to justify for some people. I think if the sensor and buffer had even gone to 15fps it may have been different.
Thank you for the detail review on this camera. Love the Hi-Rez VF and tilt/flip out/rotate LCD screen. I will wait for the A7 V or A1 II has before making my A7 IV as a backup camera though.
Great review!! Argh, so torn between the A7RV and the A1! I'm more portraits and landscape rather than fast moving sports and wildlife. Will the image quality be better on the A1?
My A7R4 delivers the goods. The only thing I NEED from the A7RV is the articulating screen for my vertical low angle shots. Making the switch is going to cost me over $2K. I am not sure if it is worth it right now. I'll wait for A7RX when the resolution hits 100MP+!!
Thank you for this super good walkthrough! Shopping for a Canon R5 replacement and though this one seems nice it doesn’t match the video capabilities on the R5 😊
For real, nobody seems to be talking about it much. To me as a landscape photographer that’s what peaks my interest the most along with being able to set custom shutter times in bulb mode so no more need to use a timer and remote for super long exposures.
@@Oakley5100 I shoot focus stacked panoramas, and some environmental portraits. So often, focus stacking (when automated) is implemented poorly - a simple step focus which does not take into account: focal length; aperture; focus distance - depth of field is always non-linear. There is more to it than that but for starters if you don't have that you do not have true focus stacking.
This may be an evolution of the iv, but it seems like a damn good evolution. Some of the issues like the screen tilt or painful menu design weren't directly related to camera quality, but they definitely mattered for actually using the thing.
@@CStonePhoto Sony says themselves there is some image quality and noise improvements. Either way you would think with a photo camera they would test/review it.
Great review, thanks. I don't understand the point of in-body RAW processing. I don't want my camera to process my RAW files. I'd like to take my time and have the control and options my RAW processing software provides. If I would need an image directly out of the camera quickly, I can use JPEGs, right?
In an age of quick sharing, it would be nice to be able to apply some small changes and then send a quick version to your phone... At a minimum, even just change the base style applied to the embedded thumbnail. Tiny little Ricoh GR cameras do this and despite their clunky interface, it's a real game changer once you have it, and a continued frustration to see such a simple thing (just at least changing the thumbnail style after shooting) missing on much fancier cameras.
@@bradwiggins2332 Sounds fair. Maybe I'd need to experience this feature to see the benefits. Still in a scenario you're describing, I would prefer to send the RAW file to my phone and do edits in e.g. Lightroom or Affinity Photo...
@@michaelechteld just imagine showing someone a picture on the back of your camera and then being able to say "and here's what it would look like in black and white", just quickly scrolling through different picture styles. It's just a huge convenience that you don't realize you are missing out on until you've seen it, and is not any kind of technical hurdle to implement (they could do it in firmware if they really wanted!)
@@bradwiggins2332 I see your point! I'll look over the shoulder of someone using that feature. I'd be curious to see if that would give me the same level of control and convenience as processing the RAW file in my phone-which is always with me.

@mirrorlessNY let's hope so. There will be new ZV-E camera for sure I.e. a cheap and dumbed down vlogger version of FX30 without the cooling and some of the more film focused features.
@@NighthunterNyx A7C has the same specs as A7iii. Of course there will be another APS-C stills/hybrid camera. Too many people have invested and still a large portion of the consumer's market prefers the more affordable APS-C line.
I love the flip out screen. For now I'll stick with my A7R4, especially since spouse bought me a new iPhone 14 Pro. Seeing the need for a camera less and less. Though, I confess, I do love my three Sony G Master lenses. Well, someday I'll upgrade.
That screen tilt mechanizm looking like in old Sony A77 😁It was so good that I was in impression it will be Sony standard for all cameras since. By the way A7R V looking like decent piece of body.
I agree that the new multi-angle/position flip-out screen would also have been very nice to have had on the FX30 also. Perhaps Sony's thinking that was video/cinematographers will add a monitor anyway and decided to keep the cost down by using a simpler version. If that were the case, I do wish that Sony would realise that we use a second monitor because the ones on Sony cameras are low in resolution and/or too small to get critical focus when using manual focus. I would much prefer to see a decent monitor on the camera itself than having to add a second monitor that is cumbersome, adds weight and is a faff regardless of how small or wonderful they may be! I do appreciate that the monitor size is camera size dependent.

That's very shaky footage at 10:27 for an alleged 8-stop IBIS. Or was that without IBIS to show rolling shutter?
11:04 The squeek had me laughing! 😂 That see-saw was begging you guys for some 3-IN-ONE oil!
Tilt and flip screen, focus stacking, good IBIS. Finally a decent upgrade for the a7riii.
If you can afford it...
Nice video. Just a small note: your photo of a "bee" is actually showing a hoverfly. ;)
Nice I might upgrade my A7R3 this year. Does you the same batteries?
Would have liked to have seen a low light evaluation of the body. Are images printable (24x36) at ISO 3200? 6400?
Thank you for this super good walkthrough! Shopping for a Canon R5 replacement and though this one seems nice it doesn’t match the video capabilities on the R5 😊
What is with that screen? That's amazing 🤩.
Why not a demo of new IBIS?!? 😢
I need the A7S III with the new IBIS system
@mipmipmipmipmip The EVF is already the same
Hey your in Fort Macleod! Watching from Lethbridge here :)
That tilty floppy screen is a nice addition
I am interested in the focus stacking feature. Does anyone have information about that? Workflow... variable step?
For real, nobody seems to be talking about it much. To me as a landscape photographer that’s what peaks my interest the most along with being able to set custom shutter times in bulb mode so no more need to use a timer and remote for super long exposures.
@@Oakley5100 I shoot focus stacked panoramas, and some environmental portraits. So often, focus stacking (when automated) is implemented poorly - a simple step focus which does not take into account: focal length; aperture; focus distance - depth of field is always non-linear. There is more to it than that but for starters if you don't have that you do not have true focus stacking.
@@Oakley5100 Check out demo of the focus stacking . ruclips.net/video/HsRk4Qq8Csg/видео.html
It is best Sony in long time. But what hapened with 100 mp sensor? Is that coming any time soon?
I was waiting for price drop of A7R IV so I can upgrade from my A7R II and this will finally bring that to me
This may be an evolution of the iv, but it seems like a damn good evolution. Some of the issues like the screen tilt or painful menu design weren't directly related to camera quality, but they definitely mattered for actually using the thing.
Looks great
That's no bee! It's a bee-mimic fly!
Thanks for a great video. I think I learned I don't need one, and will stick with my a7R IVa.
How is the noise performance for stills at high ISO? Nobody is reviewing this. Is there an embargo on it? it was the biggest issue with the a7r4.
It’s the same sensor, going to be the same
@@CStonePhoto Sony says themselves there is some image quality and noise improvements. Either way you would think with a photo camera they would test/review it.
@@DavidVRUclips try Gerald Undone probably the only reviewer worth watching at this point
@@CStonePhoto he did a video review and said he would leave the photo reviewer up to someone else
Finally someone besides Fuji (X-T100) figured out how to make a proper flip screen! Even Fuji never used it again which baffles me.
@@weplaywax And the X-T100 had it in 2018
When do you expect to have the full review out?
Nice! The A7C ii should be next. That is the camera to wait for!
I don't think it will ever see the light. It was basically the A7iii inside a small and crappy APS-C body. I would actually like to see it the other way around: a new Sony APS-C camera but with the ergonomics of the current Sony full frame bodies.
@@MoLetalis it is A7RIV in a smaller body and is one of the better selling camera. I think A7iv line may see the axe.
APS-C line is now ZV & FX only. The rest is axed. No point for photography at all
@@NighthunterNyx I think there will be new apsc bodies to replace a6600/a6400/a6100, with new menus/10bit/active ibis & hopefully this same tilt/flip screen, there's too much interest in apsc & lenses already there,,,,,,,,,,,,a7Cii should get same screen & probably 33mp sensor from a7iv
Nice! Looks promising. Sticking to my A7 IV. Can't wait to see what Sony comes up with in the next few years.
Great Review - question can you shoot 4k 60P in super 35 (crop) mode?
When's the fuji xh2 final review coming out?
Love my A7R IV so I'm not ready to upgrade just yet...
That screen tilt mechanizm looking like in old Sony A77 😁It was so good that I was in impression it will be Sony standard for all cameras since. By the way A7R V looking like decent piece of body.
focus stacking also.
Any word if 1080p video is oversampled from a higher resolution at all?
