      I heard it's on the way also with a7siii, a7s would be out already but it would take away sales from a1. The bottleneck here is the fps and performance compromise that they're trying to work out that won't get ppl mad. I still wish they'd release the a7siii one already but yeah I'd be pissed if I bought an a1

      @@brianpark2564 looking at things generally not releasing update soon is good and bad at same time. They could be easily listening to customer and include such thinga like shutter angle to a7siii if they really want to make some uber update (2.0 like they love to call). These days sofrware does a lot of job when thise processors are so good

    • @Slipsch

      Don't you wish that camera companies should be more like Apple, as soon as some bugs or update comes out, every model (most) will get an update that boosts performance and features. But then again, Apple is a software company and Sony is just an electronic giant that does almost everything. I'm not sure if they are sharing their engineers between different Sony divisions but it seems like it. But I'm super impressed with how Sony has improved their optics exponentially given that they are not as experienced as Canon or Nikon. I mean, they dabbled is some lenses in the past but nothing come close to the primary lens manufacturer.

    That tilt mechanism seems like the best of both worlds. While I had a tilt I got annoyed I couldn't get some of the angles that would be easier with a flip screen, now I've the a7iv with a flip screen I'm annoyed by how it gets in the way unlike a tilt screen, this fixes both issues! Love it.

      The reason I didn't and won't upgrade to Sony A7IV (have a Sony A7III) losing tilting ability while maintaining same axis to lens at least to me for photography is a must. The sad/stupid part is Sony had a solution for this 10 years ago... go and see photos of the tilt & swivel screen on their SLT A99 and A99 II cameras. I too hate not being able to easily take vertical portraits with the back screen because I can't change the tilt on that axis, low or high angles. Thought they would fix this with Sony A7IV finally......

    • @Francisco_Otero
      @Francisco_Otero 2 года назад +18

      Or overkill... As a photography first person, I'm forced to pay for expensive features I don't need (heatsink for 8k recording, Cinetone, a whole new processor for video etc) to get the best "photography" camera from Sony. This camera has big improvements to photography; mainly the color science, flip screen and compressed raws that I miss from the RIV, but that I cannot afford because of the amazing video features it packs. The line between A7IV, RV and SIII seams to be thinner than ever sadly.

    • @ALDIfreak81
      @ALDIfreak81 2 года назад +10

      @@Francisco_Otero ya but its not really overprized. its "only" 500bucks more than the S3. of course they could have made it with crappy video and then sell it for 3500 instead of 4k but id prefer (as a photographer also) to have that capability of awesome video without spending 3500bucks extra on the S3. The S3 on the other side is really video only with only 12mp. if that cam could have something like a 2nd mode with 24/36mp photos and would cost only 500bucks more, that would be an awesome trade also..

    • @Francisco_Otero
      @Francisco_Otero 2 года назад +3

      @@ALDIfreak81 I guess that’s one way of looking at it. However, if I wanted the hybrid shooting, then the a7iv should be the camera for me. If I wanted the do-all, then the a1 is the option. Just want video? SIII. This video-first-photography-later approach to the rV is a bummer for me, that’s all. The original RIII cost $2.998, then the RIV came out at $3.498, which was a tough sell but the new 61mpx could win some hearts. Now, at $4k USD, they made a hell of a video camera, but they already have 4 other great video cameras (siii, fx3, 7iv and a1). :(

    • @Kallio1971
      @Kallio1971 2 года назад +5

      @@Francisco_Otero that's the good thing about Sony, options. We all have different needs and if you want a do-it-all for photos only an a9 is now by far the best value out there looking at the used prices. At $4k the a7Rv seems a bit overpriced, I wonder how soon we'll see it around $3k. I think it took a9 about a year and a half to drop to $3500 (at that price it was an instant buy for me). a7Riv I got for $2800 (not grey market) about 6 months after release. I would expect this to be $3500 in about 6 months, grey market $3200 or so.

    • @ALDIfreak81
      @ALDIfreak81 2 года назад +1

      @@Francisco_Otero yeah right about r3 and 4 pricing but we have to compare it to the S3 which is video only for pricing. and when we count in inflation and other stuff it could be also possible that 4k is just the normal pricing from now on for S and R Series to come. Yes the a1 for sure is the best if you want all on pro level, but i really like this one. the old R1/2/3 were not even really options for Photographers due to the awful speed and autofocus. it was studio-photography only. now its point and shoot, awesome fast autofocus and so on..ill never be able to afford this came, but id like it for sure :D

The pressure we put on tech companies to improve at lightning speed seems ridiculous when we look at how far we have come. We have been conditioned to want what we want when we want it without considering where we once were.

    This camera hits all the improvement marks I hoped for and quite a few more! The A7RIV's relatively slow speed (compared to the newer A7SIII and later A1) is why I eventually bought an A1; this new model can serve as a great backup to my A1, and it definitely beats it with it's LCD screen, Focus Breathing (for my GM lenses) and other new features... Please Gerald you and other influential content providers please keep bugging Sony on the Firmware Updates an EXPENSIVE FLAGSHIP LIKE THE A1 SHOULD HAVE!! Lastly, I hope you will go ahead and produce a full tutorial on using the Atomos Ninja V/Ninja V+ with Sony and other cameras (yes, I'm the guy that discussed this with you at Creative Space Friday morning); it is truly needed and Atomos themselves don't present much themselves... Thanks and it was great meeting you in New York!!

      I dont think that Sony A1 is better than this one, even though the A1 is more expensive. For videos you would buy the Sony FX3 or the more expensive FX6 and for pictures I dont think anything can match the Alpha R5. If the difference of the sensor and foto quality can only be seen under the microscope, then for sure it makes no sense to buy the A1. Even if you are a billionaire and money is not a thing, you would still buy the Sony R5 instead of the A1, because of the improved LCD screen, flip screen and AI features as well as the foto quality of course. Currently nothing speaks for buying the A1. Even Gerald is using the A1 as a B-Cam and uses the Sony A74 as A-Cam :D

    Thanks Gerald for the best reviews on YT and yes I am hoping an A1 firmware update is not too far off. If you consider the number of new models Sony has released since the FX9 and it must take at least 18 months from inception to production ? then this camera was on the drawing board sometime after the beginning of the global Pandemic? Which when you think about it is quite an achievement considering Lock downs, supply chain disruptions, fires in production and warehouse facilities, chip shortages etc . It took some time for the FX6 to get touch tracking and other improvements and long after the A7siii so I guess we just need to be patient on the A1 Firmware update. I just wish they would give us some indication that something is in the pipeline.

    • @Ildskalli
      @Ildskalli 2 года назад

      It’s more than that, actually. Small updates take about 2 years to finalize, and big model updates 4. This was probably in between, considering the numerous physical changes between models. The project likely started before 2020.

    In testing, however, the A7RV's rolling shutter in 8k is ~38ms and the APS-C crop mode is ~31ms. Those are a far cry from the A7IV's 27ms full sensor readout and 13ms APS-C crop readout.

    Would you sell an a7siii and buy this one??? My vlogs need an upgrade. Currently using my iPhone 13Pro but have the a7siii in the box. The 12MP for photos kinda annoys me.
    This one though… 8k 24p and also 4k downsampled from 6K???

    Pretty good. But that rolling shutter is pretty bad. I will stick with my A7siii until sony makes a camera with 4k120 and 8k with less rolling shutter. Plus no binning in 4k 30 or 60.

    You are the best reviewer on YT. The only problem I have is I don't understand half of what you are saying because I'm just an old-fashioned street and nature photographer and really don't care about making videos. To be honest I have not seen anybody doing videos with cameras in real life only RUclipsrs do it. NatGeo videos and videography are a different story.

    That said... this camera DOES look absolutely wonderful - I was going to write it off when the rumors about the flip screen came out. Love a flip screen for video but loath them for photo (which is what I'd want this camera for - though I shoot on an rIV already). But that new design looks PERFECT. Really want to play with one of these.

    Ah well arent we all so insanely grateful that such a innovative company like Panasonic exist which over and over set the trends for the video industry? I mean look at all the acomplishemnts they achieved in their GH productline, starting at GH1 and so on, which then years later found their ways into cameras of the other companies ;)

      @@Joshua_S I really like Panasonic as well. It’s only the lens choice with auto focus that I prefer canon/Sony over them. I agree with you totally though. Panasonic and to a great extent Blackmagic pocket 4k as well are what I believe pushed dslr/mirrorless video to what it is today

    I could not go above 500 iso on my a7riv without the raw images having so much noise and falling apart in post. It made me resent it so much because I was used to sony being low light cameras coming from the a7rii. Downgraded to the a7iv

    Completely agree with the closing point. Insane the flagship continues to lag behind firmware wise with each new lower end release. These things take time, but currently no commitment that the A1 will ever get all the game changing software updates from this year making us feel like we would have to instead only get in a A2 next year which is incredibly frustrating since the device is still so powerful.

    Yes again a video camera review, a stills review I will wait for. Just to say the super articulating screen is a long awaited and a salute to the mechanical engineers. The best thing is for doing panos in portrait view and able to see without twisting your head a full screen of the image vs a narrow in the middle of a normal screen. Like the A7SM3 I used to capture the Moon and Mars flyby was at High Midnight with camera pointed up very high to where a regular camera you would be on your back to see and track doing stills with a close up with the FE 200-600mm + 2X teleconverter in APS-C to get a full frame moon at 1800mm. Compared to a lunar eclipse in '17 with my A7RM2 with a high midnight capture seated on the ground almost under my tripod. A screen that will need a lot of care when in the field not to overdo manipulation and be aware of sticking points and care with cleaning, I mean like salt air or even inclement weather.

    One thing I’d like to see talked about and improved with mirrorless cameras is startup times. I shot weddings on DSLRs for years, and the great thing with those is if you saw a moment happening, you could switch the camera on and by the time it got to your eye it was taking photos. Doing the same with my Sonys is a frustrating ordeal, often causing me to miss moments. How quick do the newer models startup from off or asleep?
