Don't want to take anything from Niki but a lot of the drivers weren't taking this race seriously. Hunt cutting through the grass is so typical of him haha. In the 70's there was an event at Brands Hatch where they raced with... tractors, and Carlos Reutemann cut through corners in that race as there was little to no point staying on pavement with those things hahaha.

There was a similar race in 78, at a Macau Grand Prix support race all racing in Zakspeed Ford Escorts, driven by a number of great past drivers like Bira, Stewart (he did not follow the Cevert pledge!), Brabham, Ireland, B Under, Surtees, Hermann, Gurney, Moss, Salvadori, de Graffenreid, Hulme, Ickx, Teddy Yip, Hailwood, P Hill etc. Ickx won the race. All drivers given first class tickets from anywhere in the world to the venue, hotel stays, spending moneys and casino chips. No price money though to honor the sporting spirit.

How interesting. I will definitely be looking for any footage of that race.
It was surprising to read that Jackie Stewart broke his pledge at what would have been a dangerous, high speed event, considering his safety campaigning and the many tragedies he witnessed.

    • @tng2057
      @tng2057 4 месяца назад

@@michaellavery4899 You know why Stewart broke his pledge? the car was a Ford and he was a Ford / Elf brands’ ambassador after quitting F1 racing. He actually rolled his car during practice but the race organizer had a few spare cars. At 84 Nurburgring the car was a MB which was not his brand.

Thanks for the info. I found some interviews with drivers such as Moss, Hill, Icyx and Brabham amongst others but no race coverage.
According to the description, Jackie Stewart only did a few demonstration laps but did not race. You were correct to say he rolled the car though.
IMO, he participated only because the Escorts are not open top and had safety features such as roll cages and, as you said, his Ford ambassadorship.
Thanks for drawing my attention to this amazing piece of motor sport history. It would be great to see racers of this era do the same. I say racers since Mike 'the bike' Hailwood put in a stunning performance straight after his victories at the Isle of Mann TT.

Again what i have been saying everytime i see this lazy-ass joke:
He was in his early 20s, and in Brasil it is pretty common to see girls in their late 10s dating guys in their early 20s and it was way more common back in the 1980s, specially for families who lived outside the big cities wich was the case for Senna's and the girl's family. In any case, the relationship didn't last and never became sexual. These acusations wich originated this lame meme come only from Senna's haters who tipically try to make even his smallest mistakes into something horrendous.

I think the yanks are trying to apply their laws and rules to Senna and life in Brazil in the 80s.

Not to mention that it is an obvious attack against someone who, not only isn't here to defend himself, but who is also loved and admired by literally Millions of people, who helped (and still helps) thousands of children in need in Brasil and still inspires people around the world.
I can take some jokes about Senna's collision with Prost, his pranks with berger and agressive driving style. But to try to outright attack his person in an attempt to "do the funny" is just completelly unfunny and dumb.

Who he dated and what he did in his personal life is irrelevant, really. All of Brazil, I'm sure, appreciates what he has done and either is a huge fan or can at least respect him as a great driver that he was.
Kind of reminds me of how they're trying to paint Piquet as this horrible and evil guy because he said something about hamilton they didn't like.

The late, great Jim Clark (RIP) would surely have relished this challenge as he was known for competing and winning in Touring Cars, F2, Indycar and others whilst being the F1 World Drivers Champion. He rarely crashed in any category and was always a perfect gentleman.
Although the actual details of his tragic, fatal crash in an F2 race are unknown, it is widely accepted that his crash was due to tyre failure at the old, high speed Hockenheim circuit, the dangers of, you highlighted at the beginning of this fantastic piece.

It’s just really hard to run a series with super stringent safety regulations as F1 around a circuit of that size. It took the medical services 5 or 6 minutes to get to Lauda- whereas now a days it takes most medical services at most 15 seconds to get to an accident scene. 5 or 6 minutes may not seem like a long time- but believe me. In a situation like that, that is more than enough time to make the difference between life and death.
