The Formula 1 Iceberg Explained, Vol. 2

  • The iceberg tier: an ever-popular internet phenomenon that can applied to just about any subject on the planet. Last year, I made one for these for Formula 1, which proved to be a big hit, so now it’s time to do it again. This time however, things are a bit different. Instead of simply nabbing a pre-made tier list off the interwebs, I asked my loyal subscribers for suggestions of what to put on a blank one, receiving well over 100, so this tier list is made up entirely of my subscribers’ suggestions, as well as a few of my own, ranging from well-known memes and trivia at the tip, to some thought-provoking conspiracy theories down in the depths. So, join me for this ill-fated voyage aboard RMS Formula 1, and remember to bring your diving gear.

      @@SManSteonly 6 cars (both Ferraris, and 2 backmarker teams) raced in the 2005 US GP because the tyres that the other teams used were deemed unsafe for the track. This is because Ralf Schumacher crashed in practice due to a tyre blowout.
      The conspiracy theory is that Ralf Schumacher intentionally crashed in practice, faking a tyre blowout, so the other teams were forced to not race, and Michael would be effectively guaranteed a win, as Ferrari were the fastest team using the "safe" tyres.

    if you make another one of these, 1975 spanish grandprix would be a good addition, as well as wasted talents such as karl wendlinger (beat schumacer), johnny herbert, stefan bellof, giles villeneuve, and martin brundle. also, speaking of karl wendlinger, his monaco crash in the first practice session following imola which measured at 360G (the world record despite most citing kenny brack with the record) also should be mentioned. karl wendlinger could have his own entry.

    4:26 It should be mentioned that Hill only won the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix as a result of team orders from Jordan. He was being caught massively by his team-mate (Ralf Schumacher), so he got on the radio and moaned about it, basically threatening that if Ralf was to fight him they might end up crashing out.

    • @PedanticGaming
      @PedanticGaming 6 месяцев назад +8

      You mean he, quite correctly, pointed out that if Ralf were to catch and overtake him, they could both crash as he was not prepared to simply move out of the way and the other, more talented, Schumacher had already gone out of the race trying to overtake a car that wasn't even fighting him? You mean he told Eddie Jordan what was best for the team and Eddie agreed, is that what you mean?

      @@PedanticGaming No, that's not what I meant. You're free to interpret it however you'd like, of course, but my interpretation is that Hill's radio message was a thinly veiled threat to pressure the team (basically "if Ralf tries to fight me I'm having us both off"). Before Hill's message, Hill and Schumacher's engineers told them about how quickly Schumacher was catching, and Schumacher's engineer (Sam Michael) said he could pass for the win, so at that stage the team didn't think the risk of a pass was excessive. It was only after Hill's radio message that the hold order was given.

    • @PedanticGaming
      @PedanticGaming 6 месяцев назад

      Personally I see that as an... uncharitable interpretation, but you're free to feel like that. Of course they both wanted to win, and it's not like team orders haven't been applied before. I'm sure Damon thought he deserved the win after getting his Jordan into the lead in the first place, and I'm equally sure Ralf thought he deserved to win because he was quicker. Personally I like to think it was a stark truth 'if we fight there is every possibility we'll crash', rather than a deliberate threat to take him out, which from Damon's career doesn't really suit his character, but then again there would've been a certain irony of having his last ever win denied by a collision with a Schumacher.@@amp888

    2007 was pretty fishy and tbh I think this may have been one of the reasons why Lewis joined Mercedes in 2013, it looked like a pretty risky and unexpected move back then. Oh, and when Ron said it was "$95 million for Ron being a t...", he was likely telling the truth.

The man is a living legend, one of the most clever and talented racing drivers that ever lived, but his statements are unnaceptable, so i can't say i'm a fan. The worst of all is that many of his bad behavior are completely pointless, directed against people who never said or did anything against him. Such a shame.

    In australia vettel lost win because of strategy, in bahrain vettel didnt start the race so lewis probably be behind him in the end, monaco won because of poor ricciardo pit stop, canada another bad strategy when vettel could won, in singapore if raikkonen stop earlier he hamilton would be behind kimi and japan probably outside podium because vettel was faster than verstappen who finished 2nd but was behind lewis due to strategy

    Even if the concept of ground effect in 1928 made sense to the people at the time, I feel like it probably would still have failed since most Grand Prix-like races would be inappropriate for such a design. I highly doubt that Prevost's car would've felt the benefits at any track other than Indianapolis or Monza, as most races involved ungraded roads, or even worse, dirt. Makes sense why it was quickly forgotten until the 1970s.

    Sorry, but at 22:50 you were wrong: it was never proven nor stated that 2019 Ferrari engine was illegal. Even the official f1 website states as much.
    It was a grey area, exactly like the das, or the double diffuser. The das was allowed that season, and then banned for the subsequent year, for the engine in 2019 new sensors were added *immediately*.
    Ferrari simply found a clever way to circumvent the rules, but never broke any of them.
    Of course the details could not be shared, because that would have meant share technical knowledge proprietary to the team (the blueprints of Ferrari engine, that then could have been copied by any other team..).
    And what happened later is often conveniently silenced, but apparently Hakkinen (I think?) shared it: Ferrari not only worked with FIA to find better regulations in fuel flow, but also served a secured penalty for 2020 and 2021, with a more restricted fuel flow than the other teams. “Allegedly”.
    So, just to point it out:
    - When Mercedes found a grey area, DAS, the regs were corrected for the subsequent season, and Mercedes could keep they das for the whole season, plus of course work on designing the car for the next season knowing the rules in advance. No loss for Merc, no penalty, no shame, grey area exploit allowed for a year.
    - When Ferrari found a grey area, fuel flow, the rules were instantly changed, new sensors added, Ferrari instantly lost its advantage, and the then was punished for 1-2 seasons..
    Just saying.
    For reference that ferrari did nothing illegal:
