  • Continue to Dispatch Two here: • Conflict in South Suda...
    Today, after two weeks of fighting in South Sudan that is believed to have killed more than 1,000 people, representatives from both the government and rebel forces met in Ethiopia to discuss the possibility of peace.
    But back in South Sudan, the fighting continued.
    Both sides hope to gain territory to strengthen their position at the bargaining table. Rebels captured the city of Bor days ago; now the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) is trying to win it back. Bor is 125 slow, painful miles from the capital city of Juba-a trip made far quicker by helicopter. And so VICE flew to the front lines with the SPLA.

      Brokkolesz There are no radical Islamists at all in South Sudan; the conflict is between the Dinka and Nuer people, who are mostly Christian with a blend of indigenous beliefs. There are virtually no Muslims in South Sudan either. The source of this conflict stems from a power struggle between two former liberation leaders.

      Actually yes tribalism with spears and stones is less violent than now that guns are introduced. My tribe has always been attacked by another for 90 years, my people did not take it seriously cause it as just small skirmishes,but when guns where introduce it turned into a genocide and drove us out of our area. You don't know anything don't make assumptions.

      its because as news comes in they put it out in these dispatches, they do it this way as opposed to waiting several weeks to get a full story and then put it out, although i do think they could put a little more information into these videos i like how they put out updates on the situations every few days

    Huh, This makes me so sad to see Africa like this, When I was born in the middle of the Bosnian Genocide in Zenica, I had to flee as a refuge, And my dad left my mom, And Africa was the only option and I moved to Nigeria then Ghana, Until my mom had enough money to move to a better place, Living in those countries for more then half my life, Has opened me to so many things, I hope Africa can stop wars one day.

    The real reason why this is going on in the South Sudan is not because of oil, its because the current president refuses to re-run for presidency on the up coming election and says that there will be "No election" in 2015 and his term will end in 2019, so the Vice President refused to follow that and his faction revolted and it later turned into to this nonsense. Other influence are to be accounted as well.

    Most problems in Africa stem from colonialism,lines drawn by Europeans did not reflect ethnic difference.they were force to coexist in a country even though their wars and hatred for each others span hundreds of years.the only way to fix Africa is to redefine nation borders .its like forcing Germans and French men to adopt one unified idenity when they speak different languages and have different culture

    • @davidjenkins5914
      @davidjenkins5914 10 лет назад

      More like if France and Germany were forced to together after 500 years of warring.historical enemies die hard esspecially if you are forced to live together for the past 60 years coupled with all types of western expolitation.the key word is forced.its a lack of consideration of historical differences

    • @Jeff_Chill
      @Jeff_Chill 10 лет назад +1

      The European Union is a fine example of warring peoples finding a peaceful coexistence. Since it was settled, Europe was plagued with war between the hostile inhabitants. Many colonial wars and two world wars that circled the globe; wars much more vicious than those shared by the tribes of Africa. However the Europeans were able to put their petty grudges and rivalries aside to uphold peace. Yet, literally over 100,000 years after humans lived in Africa, there is still petty tribal conflict, and there will be for some time. Europe is a convenient culprit, but not to blame.

    • @davidjenkins5914
      @davidjenkins5914 10 лет назад

      Petty? don't trivialize until you understand the reasons as to why groups wage wars.and humans still live in Africa fool.Europe has not suffered the same history as such you must consider many factors present and past.alsoeurope isn't exactly the beacon of peace and acceptance in the world esspecially since most western countries wage wars and benefit.you see Europe is only one part of this world judge a people on how much they minimize suffering.Europeans have a hand in much of the atrocities going on in Africa.learn African history as well.study

    • @davidjenkins5914
      @davidjenkins5914 10 лет назад

      I. Say study because African history is vast l,many westerners do not know the ancient empires of Africa the peace and wealth that characterized that time.it was was during this time that barbarism was commonplace in Europe.you learn history from one perspective you become ignorant and narrow minded

    • @Jeff_Chill
      @Jeff_Chill 10 лет назад +1

      David jenkins You're right, I really should study the history of Africa more. But it's apparent that the attribution of the troubles of Africa to the fact that it was subjected to colonization isn't a rational argument. Case and point: China. The similarly peaceful nation was carved up, much like Africa, by the Europeans for colonial wealth. Despite the dismemberment of the nation, and the severely debilitating opium epidemic that followed, China is now a world economic leader. Africa, the cradle of humanity, is capable of escaping the rut it is in, but the societies must learn to accept each other and realize that, in tribal warfare, everyone loses.

    hello im an a south Sudanese so i think i have to enlighten some of the vice viewers here 1. this is not a tribal conflict. 2. this is not a war as it is only happening in 1 town bor , you see the rebels used to be part of the army but after an attempted coup as the president salva kiir claims, then they ran from the capital city juba into the wilderness unless the rebels surrender soon they will be virtually all destroyed. i mean they really aren't a threat to the nation except in jongeli and unity state

    The assertion that the conflict is between Dinka and Nuer ethnic groups is not 100% true; if you take a closer look on both sides of the conflict; you would realize that on the rebel side; it’s overwhelmingly Nuer ethnic group; but on the government side; it’s all ethnic groups of South Sudan including Nuer.
    It seems as if the conflict is between Dinka and Nuer only to people who know less about South Sudan because Dinka are the majority and happened to be the ones in control of the government!
