Dispreet Dhillon, it’s natural. A very few amount of people decide to have sex to make babies in our day and age, but rather to have fun in a recreational activity. Do you really think the parents are jumping up and down all excited about having a kid? No. Because it’s called unplanned pregnancy and they’re aware of the financial burden the child will inflict. Sadly, abortions are generally inaccessible in those impoverished areas, which is why you see these sad stories occurring, not because the parents want to cause pain and suffering to themselves and their children.

"Biliguinist here who speaks English and Nuer the language spoken in the video. I understood what he was saying and I was reading the subtitles with it. For the most part they were accurate with translating. There are things that don't translate correctly between different languages. What's lost in translation is that it's not meant to be "owners". It was meant to say have them returned to the ones who take care of them. A generic term. South Sudan is a new nation but it has been in a state of conflict since it's inception. Even before 2011 the area that would be South Sudan was plagued with civil wars for decades. There are simply a lot of children out there from South Sudan who were never reconnected with their parents and are either taking care of themselves or being taken care of by someone. Hence the true translation." -Kun Deng

It's actually a fascinating answer. If you go back far enough, you'll find that it was the British, French, and Dutch that really began this tradition. Not just in Sudan, but throughout Africa. It's shocking to hear them talk of children as commodities, but that's what colonization does. It takes the native inhabitant and reduces them to a mere commodity. I could see how over a century of that, paired with a complete lack of economic development, might leave a society a bit screwed up.

I've rubbernecked court cases where parents actually tried to use livestock laws when fighting CPS. In the US, the idea that your kids are your property to do with as you please is still pretty common.

Saying American kids hate school is like saying look in that poor country people are starving so you should happily eat this half rotten bread. Bad bread is better than no bread but it doesn't change the fact that bread is very very bad.

Yeah nothings gonna help Sudan more than a bunch of fat sweaty white guys storming it. Actually he’ll, you might, it’ll prob unite them all in a fight against a common enemy.

This is heartbreaking 😭 to think what the American and other fortunate children complain about vs what these kids go through. I have to go work but I want to sit here and cry for 15mins for these people in Hope's their fate will somehow benefit from here and to keep from bottling it. This is so not okay. Please greater powers help these people 🥺🙏

Vice's videos have made me realize that I should appreciate my life more. I am happy, safe and i have opportunities in life that alot of people and children do not have.

I call bullshit. Telling me someone knows what an owner is and not mom and dad? On of the first things you learn in new languages is that sort of basic stuff.

To be born in America in the 21st century is a true blessing. Not only to be born here, but to be born at this time period. Just 150 years ago would have been a very hard life.
