  • Islamorada to Great Harbour to Nassau to Norman's Cay on a Gemini catamaran. We crossed the Gulf Stream over night and passed through the Gun Cay cut at 4am. On the banks, the wind was on the nose, so we beared off and headed to Great Harbour in the Berry Islands to check-in. Then we sailed down the Berry's to Bond Cay and beat to Nassau. The final day was close hauled in light winds to Norman's Cay Pond in the northern Exumas.

how long did crossing take? how much fuel and speeds sailing and motoring?

We left Key Largo in the morning, but got fuel and did some provisioning and weren't out in the Gulf stream proper until sunset. This is a very favorable angle to cross with the current assisting. We sailed and did a little motor sailing as we were pinching the wind. We went through Gun Cay on to the banks during the night. We were in Great Harbour in the afternoon. We went north because we were against the wind and could hold a tack there. Probably averaged 5 to 5.5 knots as we were pretty laden down. You can see the Spot track in the video. I think it is one hour between spots. Hope that helps!

    How was the hul slap?

A Gemini is very good in the Bahamas waters as it isn't too choppy most of the time. We had a favorable Gulf stream crossing too in 10-15 knots. That said, there can be lots of slap in the wrong seas.

hello good morning .. I have been interested in buying a small catamaran that may be within my pocket ... and I would like to ask you a question, do you think one can find something good for $ 20,000 dollars .... (I know that my budget is very low) ... I would like to know your opinion about life inside the catamaran, how it develops, is it comfortable?

Hello! I think $20k is a little low, but ultimately it depends on what you want to do. We were on a Gemini catamaran, which is a great low cost production catamaran made in the US. However, these are not ocean going boats - sure some have crossed oceans and they are fine for island hopping in the Caribbean/Bahamas too. A older model can be as low as $30k, but you can also spend over $200k on a newer well-equipped model. The older model may not have much equipment, or has not been well maintained. With all boats, you need to include money to update/repair/maintain the boat. So even if you buy a $30k boat, you may need another $10k for new sails, replacing old equipment, etc. You could get something for less, but these are usually home made and requires a more experienced boat owner/sailor. Catamarans are much more comfortable and the best way to travel, but if you do want to cross oceans, then you can probably get a small older model monohull in your price range that is capable of sailing around the world.

@@mainsailing Your time for this answer was greatly appreciated.
We are a small family who quit their jobs to travel across the continent in a campervan.
Now we are preparing a bus to travel throughout the United States.
We have a small house for rent that provides us with $ 1,200 a month.
With that money we use it to live and transform the vehicle into a motorhome.
      .
We have been living in an alternative and very austere way for four years.
      .
We want to continue traveling and doing so on a sailboat draws our attention ... As you say, we want a boat that allows us to live on board and travel part of the Caribbean ...
      .
I really appreciate your advice. We will continue to watch your videos ... Thank you very much for inspiring others with what you do.
