Mont Tremblant Classic Spring Skiing and Apres
March and April is the best time for spring skiing at Mont Tremblant north of Montreal in Quebec.Tremblant can be bitterly cold in Janaury and February, but this means there is lots of soft snow and epic mogul runs well into April. This video just shows Windigo and the Flying Mile, but the big bumps are on Expo on the North Side. The days are long, warm and the apres starts as sooner as you stop skiing!

Backcountry Skiing Around Whitewater Ski Resort - January 2022

We went back to the quaint and lovely town of Nelson in the Central Kootenays of British Columbia for some more back country skiing around Whitewater Ski Resort. The videos are mostly in around 5-mile basin which is a short skin up from the Silver King chair. The time lapse pictures are at the top of West Ymir Bowl and then at Scob's Nob. There are so many back country options here and great in...

This shows a fun few days sea kayaking in August of 2021. We went with a few other couples, but met a bunch of fun adventurers! The weather was mixed, but generally very damp and chilly. Fortunately the "glamp" had a wood fired hot tub that was awesome for warming up soggy limbs. Of course, it is called "Orca" camp but the only cetacean we saw were on the boat ride back!

We spent a month isolating in the BC mountains. Backcountry skiing is like sailing in that you are physically exploring the natural world with an eye on the weather and danger always lurking in the form of avalanches instead of reefs. I am the same age as you were (and medical medical student), could relate a lot with you, and learned a lot about sailing and relationships from your book. It makes me so happy to see you channel on youtube and that you both are still doing adventures together!! All the best to you both!! how long did crossing take? how much fuel and speeds sailing and motoring?

    • @mainsailing
      @mainsailing 7 месяцев назад

      We left Key Largo in the morning, but got fuel and did some provisioning and weren't out in the Gulf stream proper until sunset. This is a very favorable angle to cross with the current assisting. We sailed and did a little motor sailing as we were pinching the wind. We went through Gun Cay on to the banks during the night. We were in Great Harbour in the afternoon. We went north because we were against the wind and could hold a tack there. Probably averaged 5 to 5.5 knots as we were pretty laden down. You can see the Spot track in the video. I think it is one hour between spots. Hope that helps!

    What an adventure. I am looking at a 33CS for Med cruising and as you are probably the most experienced sailors of this specific model would be grateful if you could share share some of your insights on the good bad and indifferent with these cats.

    • @mainsailing
      @mainsailing 3 года назад

      These are great old style catamarans capable of handling whatever you will face although not the speediest compared to later designs. The Quest 33 is safe, stable with good space layout inside and out. Mark sure the engine is solid as she doesn't sail well to weather - but can be done - and sometimes the Med can be difficult with adverse and shifting winds. Also make sure to invest in good light air gennakers of multiple weights. You want to be able to sail in light winds reaching and downwind when the seas are relatively flatter. We faced gales and thunderstorms in her without any concerns. Read Alayne's book, Sailing Promise, for all the details.

    • @rollinroland4144
      @rollinroland4144 3 года назад

      Thanks for your thoughts. They have a reputation for not being good to windward but the staysail can help , some bridgedeck slamming and troubles with the silette out drive leg. From what I have read the main bulkhead by way of the mast can get soft. Sound about right?

    • @mainsailing
      @mainsailing 3 года назад

      @@rollinroland4144 don't know about any soft bulkhead issues, but a 30+ yo boat will flex. I am just saying what I have experienced. It all depends on what you want to do, and how much money you have. I think these boats are better for world cruising than an equivalent priced monohull.

    • @rollinroland4144
      @rollinroland4144 3 года назад

    I've been meaning to bike from Ottawa to kingston for the longest time. What route did you guys take? It looks gorgeous and also safe for the tires!!

    • @mainsailing
      @mainsailing 3 года назад

      We took the Trans-Canada Trail (old railway) to Smiths Falls and then started on the Cataraqui trail. However this was more of a trail and quickly became over grown unless you were on gravel or mountain bikes. We were riding 28mm tires which was fine on the rail trails. We had to exit to highway 15 for a while, which was heavy traffic and with a very small shoulder. Then we took country roads to Chaffery's Lock and eventually to highway 10 south to Kingston. Highway 10 is busy, but has a wide paved shoulder thanks to the annual Rideau Lakes ride each year. I will see if I can provide a link to the route on Strava. It is a great ride - go for it!

    hello good morning .. I have been interested in buying a small catamaran that may be within my pocket ... and I would like to ask you a question, do you think one can find something good for $ 20,000 dollars .... (I know that my budget is very low) ... I would like to know your opinion about life inside the catamaran, how it develops, is it comfortable?

    • @mainsailing
      @mainsailing 3 года назад

      Hello! I think $20k is a little low, but ultimately it depends on what you want to do. We were on a Gemini catamaran, which is a great low cost production catamaran made in the US. However, these are not ocean going boats - sure some have crossed oceans and they are fine for island hopping in the Caribbean/Bahamas too. A older model can be as low as $30k, but you can also spend over $200k on a newer well-equipped model. The older model may not have much equipment, or has not been well maintained. With all boats, you need to include money to update/repair/maintain the boat. So even if you buy a $30k boat, you may need another $10k for new sails, replacing old equipment, etc. You could get something for less, but these are usually home made and requires a more experienced boat owner/sailor. Catamarans are much more comfortable and the best way to travel, but if you do want to cross oceans, then you can probably get a small older model monohull in your price range that is capable of sailing around the world.

Now we are preparing a bus to travel throughout the United States. We have a small house for rent that provides us with $ 1,200 a month. With that money we use it to live and transform the vehicle into a motorhome. . We have been living in an alternative and very austere way for four years. . We want to continue traveling and doing so on a sailboat draws our attention ... As you say, we want a boat that allows us to live on board and travel part of the Caribbean ... . • @mainsailing
      @mainsailing 3 года назад

      We averaged 25km/hr when in the saddle. Good breaks for lunch and other stops meant 9 - 12 hour days. It is all about the pacing. As long as you can be comfortable in the saddle for that long, then the days weren't too bad. Thankfully the hottest days was our shortest. We had been doing long rides earlier in the season, but these were our longest ever and to string five days back to back certainly hardened the body. We slept very well each night! The first 30 minutes each morning was always tough, but then the miles slipped by! Go for it.

There is a small restaurant and inn at the bottom of the island beside the runway called MacDuff's and in the list of Jimmy Buffet's top 10 beach side bars. It is a fantastic spot and has 3 beautiful bungalows you can rent for the night. That said, there is a huge resort development underway on Norman's and I think MacDuff's is now called the Norman's Cay Beach Club. You will need to do some googling to figure what is possible now.
