Did Spyderco Ruin the Military 2? Comparing big changes to the classic pocket knife.

- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2023
- The Spyderco Military 2 has finally been released, and in this video I compare the new updates to the original version. Compression lock vs liner lock, reposition-able clip versus tip down. The Military is one of Spyderco's classic designs and one of their best big knives. Do the new updates improve the knife or ruin it? Also I made a math error in the video, I should have said 8x the price. I apologize if this correction was going to be your comment on the video.

"No one you know likes knives as much as you do." 😂
This statement literally cut me to the core.
Yep
So hilarious yet So true 💯
Easily the best line from the video 😂
God is this true
I ordered the Military 2 at the beginning of this year, and I finally received it about a month ago. I wanted a full size Spyderco knife that has the classic Spyderco blade shape and thumb hole, but with the newer compression lock, so The Military 2 was the obvious choice for me. The reason I prefer the compression lock over a liner lock is easier and safer one handed closing, and better strength for self defense situations.
In an attempt to not turn my Para 2 collecting habit into a Military collecting habit I'm holding out for a special version with different scales and steel-you know it will happen eventually-but I'm excited to eventually get a Military 2.
I’m in the same head space. I’ve bought 135 or so Spyderco knives since 2019”. Have lots of pm2’s, para3’s native’s endura’s and a bunch more. Until something comes out with a newer or different steel , or a new design I’m going to be not purchasing any knives for awhile. Although I just ordered the BLADE OPS😂pm2 Emerson wave dark gray in Elmax. I don’t have any Elmax, and don’t have an Emerson wave🤷♂️ that’s my justification 🫣✌🏼
Did you order the Micarta version.
@@star9732 Still waiting on availability and to go on sale but the CruWear/Micarta version is in my sights.
@@jwiz1911 I ordered one a little while ago for $205.
I love your reviews. Brings a new twist instead of just talking about specs. I've been waiting for this model since last year. My dealer has one. I hope I'm not too late. Thanks.
AKB, I appreciate that you actually use your knives and don’t have safe queens… I am teaching myself this very same lesson!!
You can do both 😊
A long overdue upgrade indeed! I still sometimes carry my Military, it rides next to my S&W J-Frame .357 because I'm one of those weirdos who carry's multiple things in their pockets.
I remember watching your OG Endura video, many years ago. You've came a long way & I truly enjoy your sarcasm & dry humor. This video came as a surprise to me, since this genius dropped his phone in sink whilst doing dishes. Perhaps too much brown liquor? Hopefully the new one will be here next week! Congrats on the new stump.
Also, I twas the 500th like.
🍪🍪🍪
I was born tip down, and except for certain 30 minute spells (or thereabouts), I still am a tip down man. I am happy that way. Since I own 11 Spyderco's, I kinda feel qualified to criticize here and there. They've screwed up one of the only Spydies that I sort of liked, with exactly all the relevant features. Honestly, for me, the only Spydies I actually really treasure, were all designed by collaborators. Such as the Spydiechef. And the other one I dream about, but cannot have - the K2. Every time Sal Glesser says "we design for the hand, not the eye" I throw up in my mouth a little bit... Nice stump, BTW.
Every time I watch your videos, I am always confused as to why you don't have more followers.
Keep up the great work, knife bro -- I appreciate your channel.
It’s about quality, not quantity podner.
@@elde667his followers are not quality either.
I also love my Caribbean! The LC200N Is fantastic. However, I cannot believe that someone has not made aftermarket scales for that model yet
Heck ya brother. you just nailed it with the sprint/exclusive collectors. I've made it my life's purpose to accumulate an Manix 2 in one of every blade steel option they release, which absolutely looks like I'm going for the knife clone rainbow.
Good video. Your 'new' one is what I bought in August in 2023. I have been beyond happy with it!
I have been collecting and using Spyderco knives for 4 years now,and I love the pm2 and a bunch of models. I’m guilty of steel chasing and sprint run/exclusives also. But now I have a huge collection and usually carry a military 2 and a native 5 lightweight serrated Magnacut. Great edc knives.👍🏻
Very nice. Fixed the things that kept me from pocketing one.

I find the Spyderco “Millie” is a perfect fit in the back pocket. I keep my wallet in my front pocket with a SAK. Mine is an old school gen 1 90’s model. Still a great carry and Amazon box assassin 🗡️🗡️🗡️
Looks nice and glad they made changes to the clip. A bit if a big knife for me.
Time really had no meaning because I initially misread as 12 years.
Yessss!
I appreciate you, sir.
Subbed.
The PM 2 in S110V was my first Spyderco. I love it. I also have a Para 3 with Maxamet. I love it too. Weirdly though I have been gravitating towards back lock knives. Maybe I’m getting old and clumsy and finding the compression lock too small and fiddley. More likely it’s because I have found a back lock is much easier to operate one handed wearing gloves. I even got a UKPK drop point with BD1N just because of the Slip It combined with Spydie hole are ideal for gloved manipulation. Recently I got the Native 5 Salt because of Magnacut and the backlock. All of those are Golden Co models which I also like. I have been considering a Japanese Spyderco the stretch in K390 for the same reasons stated above. All this is to say, I will miss the back lock.
Great video and humor. Much appreciated.
KB you slay me 😂 I love Spyderco as the best in folders (in general not like customs that cost what you make in a week) I wish they would put blue liners on those g10 scales because it would look 🔥 or green, orange etc.
I think overall it's a good step forward. Definitely prefer compression over liner, as it's just nicer to open and close. And yeah, the fidget factor also helps. I definitely feel that's something more people want these days. And yeah, the rest is just... usual Spyderco. Solidly built, no frills, you know what you're getting. I'll definitely pick one up eventually.
I never had a Military, but I love the pm2 , have a few dozen but really love the Military 2.😊 It’s just like a pm2 just bigger…..kinda. The stretch 2 k390 is almost like a lockback pm2 and also love the seki city k390 line. Just my 2 cents ✌🏼
Oh man I love that new stump feeling. ❤
Leave my sex life out of this!!
That’s an absolutely outstanding review of it… I liked the military as it was… but I’m not hating on a compression lock.. I wouldn’t sell my old one to get a new one.. but if I didn’t own one maybe I’d buy it compression lock.. pm2 is my Jam!
This channel needs a Primetime Emmy 🏆
I’d even take a piece of shit garbage daytime Emmy.
@@AdvancedKnifeBro ily 🤟 lmfao 🤣 you never fail to make me laugh 😆
Thanks for this. Never owned the Military but I do have a Paramilitary 2 in s110v. Not because i like the steel because i love blurple! I too will wait for a blurple version of the military 2 as well. Cause better color than black
I really needed some AKB dystopian soothsaying today and you delivered! All hail the algorithm.
Best knife channel on RUclips.
Funny, I still have my first Spyderco as well, the Gen 1 Endura, then moved up to the Gen 2 SS Endura because... wait for it.... the integral Zytel pocket clip snapped off, and the fixed was going to take to long! But then my longest use / lasting was the Police model in full Spyderedge! I used that all during my law enforcement career, I even had to purchase a 2nd one because sharping it way to much and they don't like being used a pry bars and screwdrivers! 😁👍
I’m new to your channel. Had me literally laughing out loud. Great content brother!
Great video man!
Great video thank you
They could’ve kept the original with an updated scale setup so as to permit tip up or down carry but I do like the new one. I’ve gotten aftermarket scales made for the original, tip up carry and love it.
Hi, will you compair the new Military2 to the Stretch XL in Creware. I think that will be interesting.
I got the teal para 2 in cpm s90v. My first paramilitary. I have the sage, the urban, delica and endura. I even have the manix. Man the para 2 is amazing. I can't believe all these years I've been missing out. I love my para 2. What a great knife.
The 52100 models were sweet at one point I had two plain edge 52100 pm2s and one of the partially serrated, wish I still had them.
A buddy of mine had no idea that 52100 was so corrosion prone and actually sold me his para 3 for $40 bucks. I think he was just trying to do me a solid because he knew I really wanted one. I couldn't be more grateful! Awesome knife!
Does the mili 2 have the CQI pivot bushing setup?
The full liners make a degree of sense in that they give something to anchor the clip screws and lanyard tube to.
Being it a loaner I do not disassemble in case it’s being resold. But yeah the larger liners are for the pocket clip (I said so later in the video with the text)
@@AdvancedKnifeBro shit, I missed that. My bad dude.
Mint scented green scales - the next big thing in knives. You heard it here first...
This is the best review I’ve ever watched. Your remarks about the “community” are so accurate it hurts. I loved this review. Thank you for a good review and a good laugh.
Thanks man!
Waiting for my 2nd spyderco the pm2 in s90v. Should have it Tuesday
The Military Ti has a rock solid integral frame lock (with steel insert) and has bank vault lock up. It’s heavy but feels well built. The G10 ones feel flimsy after carrying one of those.
Love mine. I've got three legacy's as well.
Does this mean they are going to discontinue making the Military 1?
Or will they keep both versions of the Military in production?
Happy to see this. The absence of the compression lock is the only reason I sold my old one. Might have to keep an eye out for another now.
I’ll be honest, my liner lock Millie had a fantastic detent and better action than my Millie 2’s comp lock.
This guy is awesome compared to other knife reviewers! Funny as f@$k. Good video.
Another great vid 👍
I've never watched such an entertaining knife video haha!
When are they going to release the Military / PM2 in MagnaCut?
Love your video man hilarious😂😂😂 subscribed
Cool video thanks.
When gonna review the $600 bailout love to hear your thoughts on it after a long night in the woods in the tent sippin on the sandy $300 yeti flask
I’ve been perusing their social media comments- they probably would have gotten off easier if they filmed themselves kicking a puppy
I love my Military 2 .Great video !
I really wish there was some aftermarket scales to replace the vinyl mobile home trailer. Scales that are currently on it. I never like the feel of those. Perhaps some titanium. Currently it’s like cheap mobile home trailer vinyl.
Very odd that S45VN didn’t make the transition from the now-standard PM2 configuration. I guess the upside is Spyderco has long experience with it, and their version of any given steel is likely to be amongst, if not the best, rendition.
I love pm3 more than pm2. One thing I hate is how it always bounces upon shutting
My most recent PM2 has the wonkiest compression lock I have ever had but its the Cutlery Shoppe XHP coated wharncliff blade, with the orange G10 (this is not a bit sadly). I love it so very much anyway. Its the perfect PM2/Military for me.
I love the: “this is not a bit” disclaimer.
@@AdvancedKnifeBro 😂 yeah…
Orange and yellow are great for not losing your knife (still puzzled why they would start making Salts green).
@@FreedomFox1because water is clear duh
I bought mine from WeBeKnives in San Francisco's Pier 39 a couple of months ago. Can't wait for the S90v Carbon Fiber version to drop.❤
Stump new, stump fresh, Mongo like stump. I've stepped into the larger Spydercos, having recently picked up the Police 4 in serrated K390, and have the Stretch XL in CruWear on the wishlist. Thanks, and enjoy.
The police 4 lw k390 has to be one of the best k390 knives from seki, although I do like the stretch 2 and endura’s. Having a 10” knife on you makes you feel like anything you need too cut doesn’t have a chance 😅the Native chief is a killer knife also. And the Military 2 won’t leave my pocket ever since I got it in July. Fantastic 👍🏻
Great, another knife I don’t need. Or… do I? Damn you, AKB. And a big thumbs up.
I’m not sure this is that high up my list of big folders from Spyderco. I think the Resilience LW in S35VN is higher up.
Thank you for the video - and thanks to the stump for bestowing upon you this specific epiphany!
stump here…. ur welcome
Fun modding fact about the OG military: if you sand away some of the G10 at the tip where the finger choil starts, you can turn the military into a front flipper. I did it on mine and it works pretty well with no major changes.
The sarcasm was thick on this one 😄
Duuuuude. Is that cedar?!? Congratulations
That there is a REAL perdy stump ya got there, bud, I really like how it can give as much as it takes, that's the sign of a ride or die stump. Be still my dark heart...
I just bought 4 of them. Elmax, A-2, Z-tuff, S90V, 80CrV2. Sandwich steel. They always want to talk about "steel this" and "heat treat that." They don't want to talk about how scalability and blade geometry affect the un-scientific gorilla tests.
The Military is cool but it’s just not different enough from the Para/PM to justify the price. I got a Resilience which is the same size but cheap enough to justify. I just don’t need another PM2.
AKB, you Magnificent Bastard!! Great choice and BEST review ever! Oh yeah, nice stump too...
This is the content I am here for!
The full liners are so you can carry tip up and have something to screw the pocket clip to…
Yep. If you see there’s an addendum on that section of a video in text form. It says nearly exactly what you say here.
I probably missed it as I was commenting. Nice vid.
The 52100 ball bearing steel, peel ply carbon fiber Military's were a Knifeworks exclusive. I got the PM2 in the same configuration from them years ago.
I definitely prefer the S30V in camo G10. Way easier to sharpen and doesn't rust like a 87 Chevy
Thanks for the info!
The redit stuff was funny 😂. I get it knife bro.
My T shirt just came in!
Yay!
Just a heads up.. The deep pocket titanium clips are not likely to carry well on the new Military. The knife will swing back and forth in the pocket.
Great video. Thanks again!
I’ve had good luck with a Lynch standard long clip 👍🏻
@@DuhYaThink I'll have to give that a go
hey ADB, i have done quick draws against a couple other knife enthusiasts( i always win). so basically clip position matters. Also id like to relate the knife fever to shingles\chickenpox. if you have ever once owned a knife, there is a chance you can catch the fever. i have spoken. lol
The Endura was my first Spyderco. I still use that bad boy twenty years later. I think of all my other knives as a spare to that one.
Yep, my first "real" knife was $35 at a gun show. 199?... Full Spyderedge with molded polymer pocket clip.(That snagged on my car seat and broke off) Repaired the clip with 1/2 of a spring steel pvc valve retaining clip. Still serviceable, but not pretty!!😂😂
Just to let you know, I was fondling my Ti Millie (my most used folder) all throughout the video, and it's _COMPLETELY NORMAL_ to do so! 👀 😄
Sold all my Spydercos save for gifts and ones I use. Not worth it
Wow.....A new Stump !!! Is it an exclusive ===
Big fan, like the running dialogue and comparisons that have nothing to do with the title.
Project for next year:
Grow Mint, Harvest Mint, Dry Mint, make stabilized mint epoxy block......Make mint scented Knife Scales. Then Basil, Oregano, Thyme, garlic stalk scales....Pizza knife
Pack of gum (or pizza slice) tucked in the same pocket as your knife will have similar results.

Carbon Fiber and 52100. Had it for years and treat it real rough, don’t care. Best knife I’ve ever had.
"Slap a compression lock in the Fucker"
Quote of the year!
The liner lock can be opened when wearing gloves. No can do with compression lock. The tip down was designed to grab the exposed clip screws while wearing gloves.
Cool, I rarely use gloves with my knives.

Ok that’s fair
There are many knife video makers, but none of them are as advanced as the Bro
needs to be made like the Caribbean with lc200n liners and blade and extra stainless hardware or magnacut
I think, the reason for steel liners is for the 4 way pocket clip
