Neil Young has got to be one of, if not THE, most prolific and productive musicians that I know of. His output, over so many years, is phenomenonal and truly amazing!
I was 7 years old when this perfect jam came to El Salvador. I was born in the USA.and knew every word . I had to translate it to Spanish so my older brothers and friends know what Neil was singing. A few years Carlos Santana came and played at the Gimnacio nacional de El Salvador. I consider my self one of the few translators of the hippie era and rock translators.
There was a lyric of Neil Young's from the song "On the Beach" that I could never forget where he sang something like ...though my problems are meaningless, that doesn't make them go away...that was so powerful in my mind that it shaped how I viewed and reacted to other people, even very grumpy or volatile people, to this day. Confronting came as a last resort after communicating or even just listening. Usually never got to a confrontational point. ( Usually, not always). But...All from one Neil Young lyric.
“Never knew a man who could tell so many lies. He had a different story for every set of eyes. Don’t know who he’s talking to, but I know it isn’t me, and I hope it isn’t you……you’re all just pissing in the wind. You don’t know it, but you are. And there ain’t nothing like a friend who will tell you when you’re just pissing in in the wind.” From “Ambulance Blues” written when this genius was 23. All the best to everyone.
I love starting my day w this. The composition, call and answer, chord progression, slide guitar (dobro too), lead to a climax then fade away..... soothing my soul.
La memoria torna al tempo degli anni migliori. Quando i sogni prendevano il volo con le note di questa canzone. Non conoscevo una sola parola D'Inglese, ma certe melodie non hanno lingua. Sono univerali e vanno dritte al cuore. Bravo!
When I was 17 I found this album in my sister's record collection. I remember being out of my mind listening to this. And I began a journey with my guitar that will never end. Thanks Neil
This is one of two of Neil's songs that virtually transport me to a different space when sitting and listening with my eyes closed. The other is "Cowgirl In The Sand". I can't explain it -- it's like being in a dream, and no other songwriter has come close to such effect.
Davester I totally agree with you. Song is full of angst. His heart was very sad the day he wrote this song. By the end of the song your heart begins to lift

Yes...we had our own world back then. It was a simpler time. Music formed what we've become. The smell and the texture of that brand new album sleeve; I will never forget it. Harvest was just that; a Harvest of Spirit, youth, pain and wondering what the future may bring. Though I was young, I knew what moved me. This album moved me. Thinking back to the time I first heard this song and was immediately floored by it. And then years later, jamming it at excessive volume late one evening at my brother-in-law's house in the Philippines, while I was alone outside and drinking Tanduay rum and coke as I devoured a tasty blunt, and everyone's gone to bed except me, and yet nobody complained or asked me to turn it down. It's funny how Neil's music can take you places in your mind that are cherished dearly, but buried just as deep, or sadly, even forgotten about totally, until just now. Words is timeless musical perfection for everyone to embrace. Thank you Neil Young, for all you've created and given to my little world full of memories long ago.
This is my favorite song from his 71-72 period, or any period, for that matter. This is a gem of a performance even though it's only a rehearsal! I have always wished his version on Harvest would have been 15 minutes long. This song deserves every bit of 15 minutes, and I never want it to end. However, his Glastonbury '09 version is even better, if that's possible. I feel as though this song was in the shadow of Heart of Gold and Old Man, two other masterpieces off the same album. And don't forget Harvest, the title song. Another great one. And Alabama! Whew! I give up. What an album!

Thank u Neil!!!!
In 2000, I saw Neil at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto. I was on about five grams of psilocybin; when he struck the opening chords to Words, I busted out bawling with joy and also had the sensation of levitating several feet in the air. Words is one of my favorite Neil songs, and I'd never heard it live before. What a perfect night--- he even closed the show with another of my favorites, Mellow My Mind. In fact, the whole set list was jam-packed with rarely played numbers. I loved Neil for that: he doesn't gear his set lists to casual fans but rather the diehards. It was a religious experience for me; thank god I was able to score some shrooms that day-- psilocybin puts you right inside the music. The emotional impact of the music is multiplied ten-fold. Shrooms are nothing short of a gift from god; he (or she or it) meant for us to use them to gain insight into his creation. All in all, one of the most wonderful nights of my life.

could never wrap my arms around the original version on Harvest at first. -- the explosive lead freak out thing thrilled me but it came too late..... so I went to this one -- this is by far my favorite...but the original harvest version is a sound to behold if I'm in the right mood to hear it..... it sounds calculated -- this was just a rehearsal.... whatever.. stay safe.
I could literally play this on loop over and over! Saw Neil in 91’ Boston Garden! What a show, what a time in my life. 17 yrs old and it was all about going to shows!
i personally _love_ both the film & the soundtrack of ‘journey through the past’. it’s a really touching albeit deeply stoned look at an innerestin’ time in an innerestin’ man’s life.. a semi-lost countercultural mini-gem. 🌾✨ (would really appreciate too it if the film / at least the “soldier” or barn scene[s] could stay on YT.. )
Someone and someone where on you tube listening to words with 70,000 likes, between the lines of age. One of my favs, im usually like neil come on and sing not just play for 15 minutes but this and stars and bar Lp are excellent,so many good lps "on the beach".
btw this song is played in the movie "journey through the past" which has a lot of songs, and shows neil young and his musician buddies and friends. its pretty chill, watched it a whole bunch of times. you get to see them smoke a couple joints and stuff. anyways... this song features a video of them playing this song in a barn. But Im almost sure that the video they used is a different instance of this song, and that they just have the video partly to fill the gaps in video.

Classical music. These ideas go together so damn well they still floor us decades later. The music in this man’s head is extraordinary.
It's simple things, if you look at musical language.
My favorite song of his is usually the one I hear him playing.

We may never meet but we have met! Twice, I've called out 2 u in concert. Once u asked asked us wat we would like next & I said "Words". Man, u gave me that Scorpio look like "watever"! The 2nd time I called out "Ontario". U looked in my direction & u gave me a 👍.
All in all, one of the most wonderful nights of my life.

ah yea heard this when I took truffles couple of years back, I thought this song was blasting me in the couch with waves of bliss. loved it. Especially since they talk in between the parts which was a fun puzzle to solve xD
DO YOU NOW IM IN POLAND 70
That's the best sounding Falcon I'd ever heard.
What a masterpiece! Thanks for sharing ;)
Never ever gets old....
Behold: one of the most *tragic* songs ever written. And I intend that as a compliment.
This song puts me into a trance and I love it I cannot dance to this song, it is too deep in meaning to me that I just fall into my past life and my happy place and memories Thanks for posting I could play this on piano very well once upon a time thanks for posting Journey through the past album and film fitting name huh
Just having a journey through the past today and lovin' every minute
That lap steel guitar oh my!
WoW! Saw Neil for the first time on the Harvest tour in Chicago at the Airie Crown Theater. And a half dozen times after that! Still amazed!
I was there too...it was Neil's birthday in November in 72'...front row center seats at that show---When they did Cinnamon Girl I thought the walls were going to collapse at the Airie Crown from the vibration, it was out of body kind of feeling. surreal.
I listen to this song while taking my shower!! One of my favorites!!!
Love your new lp Barn keep on rockin Neil
god bless you mr young for all the fantastic music you given to millions of people around the world, you have my life in troubled times worth living you are undoubtedly the greatest singer songwriter to grace this earth, long may you mr young ❤️
This should have been one whole side of Harvest.
Ronnie mmmmmm if Harvest was a double album, but I’m with you entirely ✌️👍👍
It took up all of side 3 of the JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST soundtrack.
could never wrap my arms around the original version on Harvest at first. -- the explosive lead freak out thing thrilled me but it came too late..... so I went to this one -- this is by far my favorite...but the original harvest version is a sound to behold if I'm in the right mood to hear it..... it sounds calculated -- this was just a rehearsal.... whatever.. stay safe.
Love your thoughts on whole side 😍!
my idol when I was young, and now still is. ROCK ON NEIL
As an amateur, I've tried several times to play this song with a band. Invariably, they just don't get the time change. Never fails.
I front a NY tribute band, you're right. It's difficult to make the time changes seamless, and it is so slow that ANY flaws are really obvious.
Awesome I could listen to the instrumental over and over and over and I do
I could literally play this on loop over and over! Saw Neil in 91’ Boston Garden! What a show, what a time in my life. 17 yrs old and it was all about going to shows!
It's Sunday morning, and this is my first time listening to this song🎉
I'm selfish, and glad there are so few views of this timeless masterpiece...
This brings back memories of my attic room in the late 1970s friends hanging around other cannabis in the air and lots of love
i personally _love_ both the film & the soundtrack of ‘journey through the past’.
it’s a really touching albeit deeply stoned look at an innerestin’ time in an innerestin’ man’s life..
a semi-lost countercultural mini-gem.
🌾✨
(would really appreciate too it if the film / at least the “soldier” or barn scene[s] could stay on YT.. )
Someone and someone where on you tube listening to words with 70,000 likes, between the lines of age. One of my favs, im usually like neil come on and sing not just play for 15 minutes but this and stars and bar Lp are excellent,so many good lps "on the beach".
Yes! I'd forgotten On The Beach. What a fantastic, underrated album!
Masterpiece!
I wish it never ends
I agree, it's not long enough : )
what a version ❤
btw this song is played in the movie "journey through the past" which has a lot of songs, and shows neil young and his musician buddies and friends. its pretty chill, watched it a whole bunch of times. you get to see them smoke a couple joints and stuff. anyways... this song features a video of them playing this song in a barn. But Im almost sure that the video they used is a different instance of this song, and that they just have the video partly to fill the gaps in video.
this the best version of words me thinx--what an fing guitar
Dude these are Gold Dust..!!! Beautiful..oh what a time...!!!
