Are There Benefits in Cardio Kickboxing for Self-Defense?

  • Cardio kickboxing is a popular form of exercise, but is it effective for self-defense?
Some may say cardio kickboxing is just a dance class with puffy gloves, but I say it deserves more respect.
No-I’m not saying a cardio kickboxing class practices the most effective self-defense techniques ever developed, but even a little time spent adopting the mindset of fighting back is a big step in the right direction.
The fact is most people don’t think about self-defense AT ALL, which only makes them more vulnerable!
So, I say something is better than nothing… and cardio kickboxing is definitely something!
Let me know if you agree!

In my opinion, being fit is the first part of self defense, even if you just have the ability to run away or dodge attacks than.
BUT always keep in mind, even if you learn proper form, being fast and maybe getting reflexes in Cardio Kickboxing, a punch at a opponent will probably hurt your fist and wrist if not trained against "solid" objects beforehand!

I train in Jeet Kune Do and the main emphasis is pressure testing techniques to really get the feel of utilizing it under pressure. On the side I like to train in some sort of cardio kickboxing just to have fun with something. From my perspective, any training type has something going for it. I guess you really just gotta make it work for yourself.

Great video. I started cardio kickboxing back in October and go once a week. While I know I'm not a world class fighter, I have at least improved my fighting abilities even if it's just 25%. I know how to jab, t cross, hook and uppercut. The trainer even told me from back when I first started, he's seen great improvement. I'm staying in shape, my stamina is good and probably better at age 36 than 25.
I did take the next step and took a single class with a Golden Glove fighter. Just based off what I learned in kickboxing, I was able to translate it to the real boxing class. And whatever I learned from that day, I've been using it at cardio kickboxing. So yes, by taking those kickboxing classes, you're already putting yourself ahead of many people who know NOTHING about how to throw a single punch.

I agree if you look at it from the perspective of versus nothing...then I guess you can say cardio kickboxing is not a waste of time for self-defense. HOWEVER...for that matter, yoga, weightlifting...even a dance class will be better than nothing for self-defense.

I would say that while without sparring you really can't get into the mindset of an actual fight cardio boxing or kickboxing as an addition is actually a very good idea. i don't do martial arts other than hitting the bag or the pads from time to time but i don't do it consistently and that is the only way to really improve. but i can still deliver a strong cross have a decent jab and a good kick. the problem is I can't do it for a long time. not if I'm doing it all out. proper technique will allow you to pace yourself little bit more and still deliver decent power but to keep both the power and the tank full is challenging. when I was younger I had good stamina I can still walk fast for miles without getting tired at all (at less its hot) but when I have to do something that requires fast explosive action I can't do it for a long time. and if I did cardio kickboxing (I don't really know what that is but it has cardio in it and it might be something like shadow kickboxing I'm not really sure) if it is what I think it is it could probably really help my stamina and right now this is what I need the most.

Totally agree. It also depends on the school. I've been in kickboxing classes that were all about the martial application, use of center, effective guard, etc, and I've been in classes that could only be described as "dance boxing" -- good for cardio and nothing else, but that was the goal of that particular fitness center. I MUCH prefer the former, but that's specific to my goals. Though I admit even then it wasn't my primary mode of self-defense training -- still just an add-on for cardio, but I appreciated that it still focused on practical defense applications to the extent that the medium allowed.

Interesting. I agree with you and connect with what you say, because I had the exact same attitude when I was younger and learned how much I was wrong later. Funny that you are probably 2 decades older than me and we had in our lives highly similar experiences and lessons that we have learned. Now cardio work is very important, sparring is very important. One shouldn't be on the back of the other because balanced training under good teacher is what I think everybody need. Hardest cardio work I had was from my crazy bastard Kung-Fu Sifu. That guy didn't just let us run, running as a warm up is normal. No he let us run on different kinds of surfaces- Sand when it's hot, grass, asphalt, rocks, huge wood columns we had to run and jump on and all bare foot. It made my legs so strong it was amazing. I am not saying I would do the same to my students when I will have them, but good cardio work made me stronger. When we were sparring it was with minimal defense- Genital protection and mouth piece and that's it. You know what it does? It makes you highly resistant to body shots. Of course a strike to the liver is a fight finisher but to other parts, I took some decent strikes and I didn't even feel it. And what I mean that I didn't feel it, for non martial artists who might read this and not to understand- Not that I don't feel the contact of punch or a kick to my body, it's just not effective enough against me in order to do damage.

    • @AndoMierzwa

If your thing is competitive martial arts in a ring with rules divided into rounds then all cardio work is good, I would take that as a given! Also, I can see no downside in getting fitter and therefore healthier, As for self-defence, the older I get (! am 70 next year) the more I believe in what old-style Karate used to say about one punch finishing! I sincerely hope I will never have to defend myself but my conclusion after training in several arts since my teens, is I would try to hit a vulnerable target, (Eyes, Throat, knee joints etc) with as bloody hard a shot as i can muster using two or three knuckles of a tight fist, to the chin or what I believe some kung fu schools call a leopards paw to the throat or perhaps finger jabs to the eyes with a low side kick to the knee. At my age jumping around is out of the question and i sincerely believe having a small number of techniques with the ability to use them if I had to makes me more dangerous an opponent that when I was in my 20s practising TKD and believing (Wrongly I now believe) I could defend myself with ease!
