  • Some people say martial arts is like riding a bike... I don't! I say use it or lose it!
In this episode, I'll break down the three main reasons our capabilities get rusty, then offer a four-step formula to help hold on to your skills for as long as possible.
Don't give up, my friend! Keep fighting for a happy life! :)

Happy 10th Aniversary! I hope I will still be around for your 20th!
Thank you for another insightful episode. Great reminder to keep going, review progress, and recognize the inevitable entropic changes.
Glad to hear that even you have some of the same challenges as the rest of us mortals.
Have a great day and enjoy a piece of pie, but only after working on that spring in your step!

Absolutely agree. 60 year old Black Belt and instructor. Whole life of training , marching and running with heavy backpackages , parachooting, obstacle courses and so on. Now of course osteoarthritis in the knees, herniated discs. Still trainig kickboxing and strength training, cardio on the water rower. But everything less, slower, less effort, longer recovery. No more jogging, walking with the dog. High kicks are gone, punching works still best in sparring. And some kicks to the body. Some days no sparring possible because the pain level in the knees is to high. But as you say, be thankfull for what you have. Never give up but training more wisely.

This one actually hit me hard. As I'm heading into my later 20s and with my 30s coming in a few years makes me remember I'm not a teenager beginner anymore. I'm very much going into my prime(ish) years for training, although some injuries are starting to show.
A couple of months ago, I was at a seminar with Peter Consterdine in the UK, he's in his 70s and punches 10x harder than I can now and kicks above his head still at full force. Now that's a goal to strive to 👊

Again wonderful topic worked out the Ando-Do. 🎉happy 'anniversary' first of all. The sound of your voice is one of the tiny details, that make a world, keep it up!
So, my experiences: during the dojo free time, I did a lot of 'home-dojo' and in fact, I was more focussed on karate then ever before, I read, wrote, learned a lot. So, when we went back to the dojo, the intensity of training increased a lot and I had to learn, I can only do two intensive trainings per week and need a lot of recreation time.
And the this year the flu hit me, then I got an inflammation in the hip joints, then I caught a cold, then summer pause, then vacancy, another flu - no corona by now, but there are enough illnesses out there, to keep you outof training. Sometimes, I wish the good old 'lockdown' (we didn't really have one in Germany) back. Lost focus, lost condition, lost ist all... but next year's gonna be my karate year! 2024 keep you guard up, I'm hitting you hard😊

Hey Ando! I've been watching you for about 2 years now! And I really enjoyed every video on your RUclips channel, and I love listening to your podcasts.
But I have a question. I've been wanting to start martial arts but at the end of the day I can't figure out what I want to do whether it be judo or kickboxing or any other martial arts, I've been going to the gym but I feel like I need more, I'm kinda short and not that strong and I always wanted to be able to defend myself and just work on myself and my body but I've been having trouble figuring out what martial arts to do, please let me know what you think. Thank you.

Hi! I’d say you will never know what you really like until you try it. So, just sign up anyplace and see how it goes. Focus on finding a trustworthy teacher with a group of students who support each other. As you get stronger and more coordinated, you’ll figure out if the style is meeting your needs or not. Just get started! 👍🏼

I’m not a doctor, but I can’t think of any reason why stretching after a workout would ever be a problem… even if it’s every day.
As for me, I’m not against stretching, but I focus more on moving and drilling. Mobility over flexibility. But it’s all good! Happy training!👍🏼

I thought about this a lot before answering. Something’s I’m worse at because I don’t do anymore, like fighting. I fought full contact no protection for ten years and stopped in my mid thirties. That’s almost 25 years ago and I don’t have the distant and timing anymore.
But I’m a lot better teacher than I was 25 or 30 years ago. I’m better at demonstrating the techniques and explaining how they work.
Tai Chi and hard style Chinese forms. Due to hip arthritis I can’t kick anymore, but my hand techniques are faster and more fluid than before.
So it’s a mixed bag on what I’ve lost and gained.

Perfect message! I let my arrogance get the best of me and didn’t prioritize my own training after I reached the highest rank my instructor gave. Instead, I focused on building my business and growing classes. Well, skills regressed and now I’m needing to essentially reteach myself. It’s been 4 years since I realized this and some skills still haven’t returned. Fellow martial artists: he’s serious! If you don’t use it, you lose it!

As for me, number one priority is being self-sufficient till my last day. I want to be able to walk, see, hear, understand other people, even when I get old. And the second thing I want really bad, is staying a fencer as long as I can. Sometimes I imagine entering my training hall as a 90 yo lady and doing some freeplay with younger partners.
