Back in the 90's it was hijacked by a bunch of ex military mercenaries. They almost bombed a stadium full of people. Surprised you didn't include that. They made a movie about it.
I'm actually surprised that never got brought up in the video. I heard they wanted to turn it into a country of sorts, but found out that their wasn't enough arable land on the island to realistically grow food so they gave up on it.
Lisha P you're an idiot. Those are some examples of people who were there. If he named every single person that was there the video would be too boring.
another thing you could've added is that the security guards actually lived on the island with their families and there was actually a school for the kids.. they also had a church, it Alcatraz was like it's own little village. i went last year in December and they actually had a woman there speak of her time living on the island when she was a kid until Alcatraz closed (i think i don't remember it very well since i wasn't able to meet her)
These older vids are great but what a long way - as a filmmaker - you've come!! A truly talented artist. I especially love when you weave old pics and videos from a location then immediately flash to present. REALLY well done!
Hey, why don't you check out the island of prove glia. It' sang abandoned Italian island that has a long history of death and plague and insane asylums. ;3
The youtuber should read Like a Hurricane, detailing various Native American activist occupations including of Alcatraz. The book focuses on the indigenous perspective of the activism.
Plenty of pictures of the native peoples protest mixed in throughout the video, just no elaboration. Also neglected the islands history as a harbour fortress during the civil war era. Pretty poorly researched.
This. Time spent talking about it being a strange week: 30 seconds. Time spent talking about one of the most well known things to happen at the prison since it was abandoned: 0 seconds. Love Jake's videos but he kinda dropped the ball on this one.
I discovered this channel a few weeks ago and subscribed instantly. I have been binge watching here and there. This is the oldest video I have watched so far - I’m glad Jake has learned to talk in the time since this video was made, the presentation was cringe worthy but I’m glad he stuck with it.
Your videos from 2020 got me to binge these! Went back to ep. 1 and wow there is a noticeable difference in quality from just 5 videos! And today's videos are near perfect. Fun to hear the changes all at once
You missed the Native American takeover portion of Alcatraz where it was abandoned and the First Nations occupied it, holding it from the FBI for a time.
How can you not mention the Sean Connery/Nicholas Cage movie, The Rock? But loads of other games have had Alcratraz too, Rush: The Rock, Rainbow Six 3, The Suffering (at least it's what it's supposed to be)...
After the Nickelodeon Studios video, you should look into the island Disney owns in the Bahamas. They built an adult oriented cruise destination resort in the late 1980's I believe, but a hurricane came through before they opened for business and they just abandoned the island entirely. I visited the island back in 2002. It was surreal. All of the buildings were still intact, there was an outdoor theater, several swimming pools and bars, but there was obvious damage and debris from the years of neglect. It was just like Jurassic Park, only without the velociraptors.
I suggest McNeil Island in Puget Sound, WA. Also a prison island. Larger than Alcatraz, and much more obsucre. It was recently closed apart from one small area where prison inmates still build ship hulls.
Going back and watching these I see how far you've come. It's awesome though that you didn't go back and rebrand these. You just left them as BSG. Good shit. Last few seconds were the best of the episode!
All I can say is: this place is a trespassing paradise. Whenever you jump over the rails or climb under the chain fences, there is a word of thrill, danger and forbidden fruit that awaits (much like crime, the irony).
Do a ski resort! I know of one called Whittier in Ossipee New Hampshire. It's creepy because you can actually drive back and see the old trails with new growth...and and the lifts are still there including its tram on the main road! (Route 16) it closed back in 1989 after a 10 year run but that's all I know...I want to know more!
Ur videos have improved so much. Ur first few videos are so adorable cos U stutter and make mistakes, but now Ur videos are so much more "professional" in a sense. Good work
You mean the Playhouse Disney: Live On Stage show? It's still being used but now is under the Disney Junior name. I've been there like 15 times and that was my favorite show when I was little. That was also back when it was Playhouse Disney.
We had to wait three days to get a tour to the prison back in 2017...it was well worth the wait..My wife and I toured the prison and saw all of the history of it...it still had a creepy feel, which made the tour even better...I highly encourage everyone to see this iconic place...
Bxrbie Dollz Not entirely it was mostly just the knowledge of the crazy stuff that happened kinda messed with you, lots of tourists when i went so it just felt more like a crowded parking garage
Live in SF and I've been there. It's not at all eerie unless you let it get to you. Sound carries REALLY well, so even when you think you're alone, you can hear tourists in other parts (the morgue is a good example. Its a small building outside the main cell block, but has a closed door to the cell block, so from outside you can hear "voices" in the morgue. It's people in the cell block). Some areas are too dangerous like the old textiles factory and power house. Other than that, you have free reign. Just remember it's federal land and not California state land, so the laws are slightly different (don't llitter. In California it's a minor infraction, on federal land its a misdemeanor)
I lived near SF and Alcatraz was always an eerie site when we'd drive over the Golden Gate Bridge into the city. My dad took me there once as a kid and I remember it feeling uncomfortable, I absolutely love this series.
Loved this video almost as much as I loved visiting the island itself. I think any of the old worlds fair sights or old Olympic stadiums would be SO cool!
can you do a video of the old Houston Texans stadium because that stadium is currently abandon and sits right across the parking lot from the new Houston Texans stadium
It was never the Texans stadium. The Astrodome was the home of the Oilers, Astros, and our rodeo. Sometime in the last decade the rodeo quit using the Dome to house livestock during the show (as it is affectionately called).
I had the opportunity to tour Alcatraz back in 2017, and it was such an awesome experience! Even though it’s a museum now, it really did have an eerie, abandoned vibe throughout the entire island.
Usually I like the videos in your Abandoned series, but this one really deserves a remake. Have you ever actually been to Alcatraz? It is hard to imagine, after all of the nuanced historical narratives you give on failed Disney ventures, that you would give such short shrift to this iconic site. Not one mention of the Native American occupation? And in your reply to one of the comments you claimed you didn't even know why the "Indians Welcome" sign appeared in a photograph???? No mention of the other buildings or the big fire that destroyed the Warden's house. And dude, they are called "videos" because there is supposed to be a picture to go with the soundtrack. Talking over a black screen for minutes on end just seems lazy and cheap. You can do better. You have done better. But like I said, I really like your other videos a lot. Cheers!
Do you have any idea how long I wanted to see this. It was worth the wait. Quick question, do you know a probable time you'll upload the next abandoned. I can't wait for Nick studios. Great Video BrightSun-San
I haven't started the script yet, if I were you... Id probably expect it sometime early February. I give live updates about the videos on my Twitter :)
I just found your videos and it's really interesting. Have you considered any of the Olympic Villages? Built and used for the Olympics and then abandoned after the games are over?
The Alcatraz tour is great and they let you explore on your own. At one point I ended up in a shower room under the main cell block I don't think was open to the public. It's a creepy place but it's basically pretty open. When I was there about 15 years ago they had some elderly people that served as guards and a prisoner to talk to people and take questions. I doubt they're still around though. It's also a bird sanctuary, with one block of the prison yard so covered with birds you couldn't take a step.
Forget the haters, I like the "ums", it makes your personality show! I would have loved to see some mention of the indigenous people's occupation of Alcatraz in your video. Maybe you could do a follow up that focuses on that period of time?
after watching some of your other videos, i've got to say this one was epically bad, you really should have just totally redone the narration on another day before releasing this.
+Bright Sun Films This took way TOO* long to make Jake.... Too, not to. Anyway the quality of these videos continues to improve greatly with Target Canada being a near masterpiece of short film. I enjoyed that one so much I've recommended it to nearly anyone that I know is aware of what RUclips is, family, friends, classmates, film teachers, everyone. Keep this crap up Jake, I assure you that some great opportunities are in your future and you deserve whatever comes to you my man. You're great.
+Dakota Perez You're somewhat correct, but seeing as it opened as a penitentiary and now is more or less open for tours to the general public, I will agree that it is still "in use," but when you look at it from its original purpose, its abandoned.
you've GOT to step up the narration game. you've got such a great concept and you're just rambling to a sideshow. if you can pull it off, give a friend some beer money but don't ruin what you've got going here. it's really bad. ..
@@BrightSunFilmsYou probably won't see this but I don't see why everyone was so horrible in the comments for this vid, hopefully most are dead now. You pretty anyway 😘
Jake, you are so funny. I live close to San Francisco and have done the Alcatraz tour twice. They have an accompanying audio tour that you can listen to while walking around the grounds. It has been a number of years since my last visit, but I feel it is worth the trip to go once and definitely get the audio tour. You are ferried in, you walk uphill a bit until you reach the building. The uphill climb will be a bit difficult for mobility limited and people with breathing struggles. The air out there is generally cold and windy so wear layers. The ferries arrive every half hour or so on each end so your wait is not too long, but definitely make reservations. Tours are year round, but I do not know about holidays..The tours sell out in the high tourist months when the weather is better.. Sept-Oct. June and July months are not summer there. you can purchase tons of swag to take home in the city. San Francisco is unique and definitely worth a visit. one of these days, post corona isolation and the craziness involved, I will make my way to see your areas.
You pronounced Anglin correctly, as far as the last names of two of the three who actually escaped. I've been there and taken the tour. They made one hell of a tourist attraction out of this place. I would say it isn't too creepy, but maybe if someone gets scared easily they shouldn't take the tour alone. But even then, the place is usually packed with people (even just other tourists) so I don't see it being a problem for someone to visit and tour the island by themselves. In the '90s when I went, they would loan you a Walkman with a preloaded tape in it that allowed you to basically roam the area of the whole inside and out and the tape was pretty much your tour guide and helped you find your way around. I'm sure it's probably a bit updated now, but it's probably just about the same tour all over again if you've already been there once. I would still go again, but only because of how long it's been since I've been there last. The gift shop also has some really awesome things you can only buy there, like the book I bought called "Inside the Walls of Alcatraz" by Frank Heany (the youngest guard to ever serve at that prison). The book came autographed by the author and is a very interesting read about the day to day life that happened in there way back then. And truthfully, the conditions in the place weren't too bad (I can tell from the way it looked in areas that were meant to look just as they did when the prison was in operation, along with asking the people who worked there and even doing some research myself). I would have referred to it as tolerable for an old supermax (even though I've never been locked up). The only problem with the place was that it was thought to be escape proof, but that was proven wrong by Frank Lee Morris and John and Clarence Anglin since there still isn't much evidence as to what actually happened to them and they were never found (despite the amazing and sophisticated plan that they used just to get out of the building and out to the water).
Do Rocky Point (a closed amusement park in Warwick Rhode Island) until 2014 the wooden roller coaster still stood, and other leftover parts of the park still stand eerily today! You can see it from a back road...
If you could do more episodes on shipwrecks I think that'd be really cool! You could explain the history of the ship, the story of the wreak and if possible show any pictures and videos from its current state!
I would strongly encourage everyone to go visit this place, I’ve been all around the U.S. and parts of the world and this place was by far the most interesting experience!
I live in RI and there was a pretty popular theme park here called Rocky Point that closed in the early 90s. They have since turned the land into a park but for a really long time most of the structures were still standing and were left abandoned and I know a lot of people who used to break in and explore the food courts and some of the beach houses that were on the property. I haven't been to the area in a while so I'm not sure what's left but for a while it was super creepy! Also check out the Ladd School if you've never heard of it! Insanely creepy abandoned mental institution in RI that was charged with several medical malpractice lawsuits and has a ton of local rumors of being haunted. I think the Ladd School closed in the 90s as well. Basically everyone I know has broken in there at least once.
Fun fact not mentioned here. Alcatraz had families living on the island and a handful of children grew up there. They even had a small school on the island.
Back in the 90's it was hijacked by a bunch of ex military mercenaries. They almost bombed a stadium full of people. Surprised you didn't include that. They made a movie about it.
oh the rock with Nicholas cage?
Was also occupied by Native Americans in the early 1970's
I'm actually surprised that never got brought up in the video. I heard they wanted to turn it into a country of sorts, but found out that their wasn't enough arable land on the island to realistically grow food so they gave up on it.

you've GOT to step up the narration game. you've got such a great concept and you're just rambling to a sideshow. if you can pull it off, give a friend some beer money but don't ruin what you've got going here. it's really bad. ..
This one was a great episode!
CapTain Brick Thank you

Can we just appreciate hot attractive Alvin karpis was?😍👅

His videos became so much better!
I was curious about Al Capone and googled him and found that he came to my sad, lonely, small, town and murdered 2 people.
What did you think he did for a living sell antiques? It is understandable no one can know everything ! Keep learning, I'm 66yrs and learning!
Great entry. in your series of Abandoned videos
"Bright Sun Gaming" damn that nostalgia
Do Rocky Point (a closed amusement park in Warwick Rhode Island) until 2014 the wooden roller coaster still stood, and other leftover parts of the park still stand eerily today! You can see it from a back road...
Damn, the old intro from when he was called Bright Sun Gaming. The Nostalgia.
My nostalgia meter just completely overloaded when he said “there was a dlc, in black ops”
Can you do Eastern State Penn.
Have you listened to this lately could use a reshoot
Would you consider doing a video on linda vista hospital in LA ?
