My Parents and Grand parents had a Circuit city "Guy" they would go see for his expertise and ability to explain and teach them about consumer electronics... They would drive out of their way to go there instead of a closer electronics store. As soon as commission was gone and their stock became generic stock not Driven by electronic experts on what their customers where looking for... It became redundant.. They offered nothing different then other stores with usually lesser quality or more generic stock instead of the high end good quality products that where curated by a passionate sales staff be fore.

If you would like some former employee insight: I worked at the Circuit City in Springfield, IL around 2006-2007.
This was when HDMI cables first hit the market along with HDDVD, Blu-ray, PS3, complete with 720p/720i and 1080p/1080i plasma/LCD televisions.
While I was not on commission, we were still expected to have good sales numbers. I was the best of 8 floor employees with closing roughly $20k/ week in direct sales, I was also only 1 of 3 employees that knew how to set up a full entertainment system- such as audio receivers and tvs to 5.1/7.1/9.1 surround setups to several peripherals (game consoles, blu-ray, HDDVD, cable, computer) utilizing RCA, Composite, Component, Monster speaker wire, digital coaxial, optical fiber audio cable, DVI, and HDMI cables. There POS software was some shitty ms-dos proprietary abomination complete with all green lettering...
Despite all this, I was fired on the spot one day. Why? You ask.... because a regional manager was undercover posing as a shopper. Walking around with a random Best Buy brochure. I offered assistance, but he declined. I told him I would be in the area helping other customers if he needed anything.
I was fired because I didn't try to push him for sales.... I was fired for not badgering and annoying a customer until they bought some shit.... That store closed soon after.
Old comment I know, but I have a similar story, just from the customer side. I love car audio and roughly around 2004, I bought a clean 94 mercury tracer LTS sedan. In the trunk was a very nice Kenwood eXcelon head unit but the harness was missing. It was a long day, so I made it to circuit city around 830 pm. I wanted to buy the harness for the Kenwood and hook it up. The employee who helped me was basically told that when his shift was over, to not come back for the Sam reason you were fired. When I went in, he actually pulled the display model Kenwood out, plugged mine in, as well as hooked up the rca cables and let me thoroughly test the unit. Once I saw it worked, he asked me what car I was installing it into so I told him that mercury tracer. He then told me how he was fired, and since it was just about 9 the end of his day he said he'd meet me outside. About 10 after 9, he came out with a plug and play smart harness for a Kenwood to Ford, as well as a set of Kenwood 6.5s, and 5 1/4s for that car. He said "this place screwed me for not pushing sales, so, here. On the house. I ain't selling em to you. Have a good night sir." I did the right thing and threw him a Benjamin for his pocket anyway .

Keeping a customer is more important than selling a brand new car
stereo system. It is like options were taken away from the customer,
and the store was not interested in saving customers a few dollars.
I find it perplexing that rules are bent in some cases, but not in other
cases.

When Circuit City first opened, it was amazing for the era. Everyone wanted to go there for the car audio equipment and home stereo equipment. No other stores had anything like it.

Yeah, I think their failure vs Best Buy is Best Buy, from what I understand, changed their store design to be more fun inside. Circuit City tried but I never really had fun in a Circuit City, while Best Buy was fun to just hang out in for 30-40 minutes.
You forgot one specific thing that Circuit City did, that accelerated their demise, and this was really, really dirty. They took their highest-paid wage people, laid them off, then offered them their jobs back - at starting wage. The people that did accept were extremely jaded and the ones that didn't, were replaced with people that should have been flipping burgers. It was not a good mix of floor employees.

This explains why the customer service - or lack thereof - went to crap towards the end of Circuit City's life.
I would love to get laid off on those grounds, just so I could tell them to fuck themselves when they try to get me re-hired lol.
Sun TV & Electronics was in my city. I'm pretty sure that's where I bought my first 586 and it had a 1 GB hard drive. That kind of capacity was unheard of at that time, lol.
I didn't know about this, but that would be extremely detrimental for customer service.
As far as wages go, Walmart did a similar thing about a year or two ago when it increased the starting wages to equal that of employees who had been with the company for 5 or more years and had only gotten that wage through performance-based raises. Not that this has hurt Walmart, just a similar incident.

This took me back down memory lane. I worked at Circuit City from 1999-2005, so I lived through many of these changes. So many memories.
The decision to get rid of appliances was a big factor in their decline--they missed out on the housing boom, and thus significant revenue from appliance sales.

@@mikemancini313 It did, but it was already on the decline, and the decision to stop selling appliances (which had previously been one of their most profitable categories, ironically) was part of that. They were also one of the largest sellers of appliances in the country before that, I think in second or third place. Why the heck they decided to kill the goose that laid the golden egg is beyond me.

Used car sales are booming and with that financing and leasing used cars is largely as well. I would have my job if it were not for more people buying used cars. It also helps that car max makes it very easy to buy a used car with location transfers nonnegotiable prices and warranties. And a very good website too bad Canada dose not have car max or Zillow for that matter
It really is and they sell new cars in some markets. I know the Carmax in Laurel, Maryland, sells new Toyotas--both lots are physically connected and the new cars have "Carmax" plates on them.
I just to live just down the street from there in Jessup. Small world.
But yeah, I've seen a few Carmax dealer blends as well. I've seen Nissan as well.

I remember circuit city had this great policy where if you paid to have your car stereo installed by their technicians and you kept your receipt, if you got a new car, they would transfer it to your new car for free.
I worked at circuit city for a couple months. The actual store I worked at was in this video on the WBAL clip. Management sucked and the store was about 20 years behind Best Buy. It may have been my worst retail job I ever had.
The Circuit City stores I remember always had high pressure sales teams bothering me whenever I wanted to buy CDs.
Lmao the only CD I ever bought at Circuit City was a Primus album because it was in the discount bin. Their CD's were always so damn overpriced just like FYE.

Was an employee that Opened the Circuit city in Everett wa.. Hired and trained weeks before the doors opened on customer service, products and how to push extended warranty sales. At first the needed quota of extended warranty sales was about 8 percent. Then 9 percent (and it grew as time went on).. If you didn't meet your quota your were called into the managers office for a "Meeting" and told/threatened to retrain and after 3 such visits the company required the manager to fire the employee. It became so unbearable alot of quality salesmen left. And the pressure to customers became an extreme issue also. I was offered a job by the owner of a local computer shop who liked my knowledge and sales ability and I left immediatly (after telling the Store Manager to shove his quotas and numbers up his ass)
Miss that location so much, I think I see it in this video too, now carmax in the area and the furniture store
Dean that’s why I stopped going there. Between the lack of knowledge and the relentless upsell on extended warranties it became a chore to shop there. My last “ purchase “ was a non purchase as the manager was standing behind the employee when I told them if they asked about an extended warranty I was leaving and she did and I walked out without buying a thing.

It's fascinating when you step back and look at it.
Technology as a whole has become a massive part of our everyday lives.
Electronics retailers are the best way to see this. They went from unique places were you could buy things that your neighbors might not have, to stores that aren't exactly impressive anymore.
We're used to being surrounded by screens, speakers/stereos, and computers. Technology in general doesn't have that mind-blowing magic that it used to.
It's very interesting when you take a moment to think about it.
We have multiple abandoned Circuit City's in my area and I barely remember when they were open. RIP.

Sidenote: when that particular store closed I got a Legend of Spyro game for really cheap from there for the GameBoy Advance even though the local Target stopped selling GBA games long before lol. I guess that kinda shows how much they didn't sell when they were open :(

During its final years, I had one of the lamest customer service experiences ever. A sales floor guy asked me if I needed any help, and I was halfway through explaining what I needed help with and he walked off to ask another customer if they needed help. I called him out on how rude that was, and because he didn't appreciate that, later on he kept insisting a certain price tag was for a different item, but I had worked retail long enough to decipher the UPC and product codes on shelf tags.

Kind of, Chris. Kmart owned Waldenbooks (a chain of stores only found in malls) for a long time, and they could never figure out what to do with it. Instead of doing the right thing - spinning off Waldenbooks and letting it sink or swim on its own merits - they bought Borders and merged the two, in hopes the then-successful Borders' management would turn around Waldenbooks. Unfortunately, the Borders management all resigned.
I worked there for years, & was among the first round of layoffs, which focused on those making the most, i.e., the most senior non-management employees. The company was in the middle of a billion-dollar POS/Inventory computer upgrade/changeover. Alas, a mere few months before the final stage of the computer changeover, the entire executive body died in a plane-crash, destroying the company's best & brightest, it's entire brain-trust, including everyone who was handling the changeover. I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned in the video, because it was absolutely the beginning of the end. If that plane crash hadn't happened, I believe CC would still be here today. We were all SO optimistic, and business never stopped improving. Before the crash & subsequent chaos, my location was a $65M store, despite being in a small city (population ~100,000). I personally moved $65-85,000 of audio/video equipment PER DAY. After the crash, things immediately started declining. Inventory was a mess, we had half the terminals we needed, because the functional old terminals had been replaced now-useless "new" computers, & the new inventory system had already started being implemented. As I said, it was chaos. The company went from having a billion dollars in liquid assets to bankruptcy in a year and half. It was really tragic, for the families of those who died, and those affected.

I remember a friend of mine left there due to stress. They were hauled into the office if they didn't sell enough plans. It was brutal.
I worked for a German electronics retail group last year. It is still the same story, if you don't have enough sales you will be called into the office. Enough sales but not enough afilliate products or attached services or you did not have enough customers that financed their purchase over the partner bank. You are called into the office. You would have to explain yourself and if you couldn't or your performance did not improve you would have to face consequences.
First consequences are reduced brake times and your free day would be planned as inconvenient as possible. Worst case they would say you tried to steal and would fire you instantly and also burn you for all other stores in your region.
It seems to be the same thing with these stores in every place and there seems to be no change over time. There seems to be always the next guy in need of a job that will work in such conditions

@@TJayVariable 😲 wow that happened to my brother after 14yrs brother at AT&T. They bought out SBC. He wuz on their escalations team and AT& T changed the focus of the business after they bought it. It wuz during the recession, when they were selling U-verse. They wanted him to sell 5 per day. He wuz lucky to get 1 per wk. Customer simply were not buying. That wuz an extra $400+ a month expense. They put him on "steps" then suspended him in January and fired him in March over the phone. Lied on him to unemployment and blocked his unemployment. Illinois is a right to wrk state. He tried to find an employment lawyer to no avail once they found out it wuz "Ma Bell" aka AT&T rearing its ugly head. His family went into forclosure. Its been hard trying to explain that to potential employers. After all that they told him he cud reapply at a reduce pay rate from $25 to $14. I think they did that bcuz he didnt take the "sip" when it wuz offered which wuz only one month pay instead the a full yr pay like they gave to the ones that were there long before him. The same thing happened at Comcast my neighbor cudnt get a certain amt of sales. He wuz under so much stress. Wednesday morning he came home after being called into the office. He complained of a headache. Long story short His wife drove him to the hospital. He died Saturday morning. I didn't ask the wife the C.O.D im almost sure it wuz stress induced tho. Sorry for the long comment. Have a grt rest of ur day.

4:27 Hey, that's the old Circuit City from Concord, NH. It's now been transformed into Altitude Trampoline Park. It used to be a Spirit Halloween, but the Toys R Us down the road from there is the new location for that. The mall that Circuit City is attached to is the Steeplegate Mall and is practically abandoned at this point. Sears and JC Penny are pretty much the only things keeping it afloat at this point.
That commercial with the storefront plugging into the ground is a memory I knew never would be unlocked.
The Source sucks. Need an iPhone accessory for way too much money? They got you. Like cramped, uncomfortably tight aisles? You better believe they got you. Need a bit of cable or wiring that isn't USB or HDMI? Get the Hell out, what do you think this is, a Radio Shack?

I could say the same for Sears and Kmart

If I had to guess, look at the Housing Market Crash of 2006-07 and then google search Great Depression Bread Lines & Black Thursday / Suicides. It'll be that times 100. There used to be a Circuit City in the Fairfield Mall in the Bay Area in California. Its now currently a Drive Raceway karting track, but the outer facade was never changed. So, if you know what the outside of a Circuit City looked like, you can definitely tell what the building once was....

They went under in 2011. Sad. But online retailers killed it. I liked Borders better than Barnes and Noble because Borders had nothing but books and books and books, all kinds of books. With Barnes and Noble, 1/3 is books, 1/3 is kids books, and 1/3 is miscellaneous toys, games, and overpriced stationary.
I was standing in line at "Barnes and Noble" to make a purchase and there was a family ahead of me. The wife was looking at the selection of bookmarks on a spinner rack. She picked one and said to her husband, "We should get this for Mikey" (I'm assuming Mikey is their son).
The husband asked, "How much?"
"Three dollars," said the wife.
The husband made a face and scoffed, "Three bucks for a piece of paper?!"
Common sense prevailed and the wife put the bookmark back.
Agreed Borders was always a way better in store shopping experience then barnes and noble which surprises me they are still around.
Yes, Borders even had coupons anyone could use (up to 40% off any book!) and they didn't have a membership program where you had to pay to get in and receive said coupons.
I always loved going to Circuit City as a kid and buying CDs and browsing the computer section in the 90s. God, it seems like yesterday watching this video. I was there when it closed. I had to be. Thank you for researching and making this video! Very informative! I always wanted to know why they went out of business.
My local Circuit City was amazing!
My laptop died in the middle of finals week and I needed a replacement.
They closed before I could get there, but the next day, the manager himself met me outside the front doors with the laptop I had ordered. He had stayed late the night before and charged it and made sure everything worked so I wouldn’t lose any time prepping my final projects.
He even tossed in a bag of sodas and snacks that he’d bought on his own dime, along with a pack of CD-RWs, and bunch of popular CDs, and a bunch of new release movies.
Super nice guy, and I’m so happy that when CC closed he was able to achieve his dream of opening his own restaurant.

I remember all too well Circuit City. As a sales pro myself, I liked allot what they were doing in the beginning. Near the end I remember going in there to a store, and poor customer was looking at a DSLR, and the sale rep was so ill equipped knowledge wise, I took over the sale, qualified the customer, and made recommendations, and she bought a nice Nikon DSLR and some lenses and was happy as could be. I didn't even work for Circuit City. I was offered a job there on the spot, and I declined, and said, no thank you, but I did recommend training of their staff. Who knew they would be gone so soon after I helped that nice lady with her DSLR purchase. I worked at a High End Audio Store at the time, and Circuit City was across the street, and I would eat lunch around there and go talk to the employees at Circuit City. Some were good friends too. Crazy how things go sometimes.

They must have been hard up for decent employees at the end. I remember going in there with my Mom to buy a laptop when I was 13. The guy helping us basically just stood there and agreed with me as I told my Mom the pros/cons of each laptop. Before we left the store a manager asked me how old I was told me I had a job waiting for me there. They went under a couple years later.

On the Circuit City note, did you know that they were the company that introduced the concept of extended warranties? That was a large part of their demise as they were selling products at a loss and making it up through the warranty which they did successfully for quite a while until it backfired in court. Extended warranties are still typically bogus. Generally if an item is going to malfunction it will happen during the manufacturer warranty period, that being said if it does fail later you'll wish you had one lol. Keep up the great work! 👍
I never had a successful trip to Circuit City. The staff at two stores I went to were rude, knew nothing and simply had no enthusiasm about their products. Perhaps this was due to commission to hourly pay. I walked out of their store angry more than once. Best success I had buying anything was during their going out of business sales.

I remember the liquidation "sales" at Circuit City. They said they were giving discounts, but turns out that they mis-advertised the prices so that you were still paying near full price for the items even though they were being advertised as being deeply discounted.

I read back then that this is common liquidation tactics. They actually priced everything to the max to fool ppl thinking they are getting a bargin due to the word liquidation. I went to my local CC and everything was MSRP or more.
That's not the case at all.
Liquidators purchased the company and everything inside. Everything was then set to MSRP, and discounted from that.
Nothing was misrepresented and it was incredibly clear from day 1. Its the same case at every liquidation.
I'm not one to defend a major corporation but I worked there throughout liquidation until the very last day - complaints like yours were very common and completely wrong.

Had a bad experience in the 90’s when I had an interview to work there. I showed up on time while the manager stood around chatting with her friends. I waited a good 20 minutes before sticking my head outside the room to see just what the heck was going on. Manager saw me looking out and told me with attitude that she would be in in a few minutes. Waited another 10 minutes and started thinking if this is how a potential employee gets treated, I can imagine how it would be once I actually started working there. I walked out while she continued to chat.
Loved the store but if that’s any indication of their management practices, I can kind of understand their demise.
My last memory of circuit city was buying JayZ’s album “American Gangster” from the Winston-Salem, NC location on November 6th 2007.

I stopped shopping at Circuit City when they introduced DIVX, which was a DVD player that had a modem in it that had to be plugged into a telephone jack in order for it to play any DVDs. This was so that Circuit City could charge the customer for viewing a DVD they had purchased more than five times. You read that right - if you went out and purchased a DVD you really liked and wanted to to play it in in the DIVX machine, you would have to pay Circuit City if you watched it more than five times.
So if you have those now, do they work since the company is no longer around?
From what I remember (and I could be wrong), you bought the DIVX disc. You took it home asnd put it in your player. At THAT moment, a timer begins. You are allowed to watch that video as many times as you want for the next 24 hours, after which you could order another 24 hours window, but ther rights to watch it umlimited times over an unlimited time frame, use the DIVX disc as a coaster, or throw the damn thing away. Yeah, this concept would go over REALLY good with enviromenatalists. How did that work for you, New CVoke of the DVD?
i worked there when they rolled out divx, and we had to push it like mad. no one understood the concept haha
like Thystaff said, the DIVX discs were around $5, and were basically rentals with a self destruct, so that you wouldn't have to bring them back to the store. . You did have to have the player hooked up to a phone line to play the DIVX discs. The players also played regular DVDs, and did not need to be hooked up to a phone line to do it. My first DVD player was a DIVX coded player, never bothered with the phone line, or the DIVX discs. Looking back, the funny thing is that the phone line requirement killed the DIVX part for a lot of people (and was a huge loss of money for CC), because they felt like it was an invasion. Not much later, and people might die if they weren't connected to the internet in someway. you have to search if you want a TV that doesn't connect to the internet, and I don't think there are any BluRay players that don't. not to mention every smart phone out there. so much for being worried about privacy...
The DIVX was a silly idea back then since smarter than average people could just use work-arounds.
Every video I watch about CC, the massive failure of DIVX is never mentioned. That only proves that what they put so much hope into, never became even mildly known. They were really sinking massive amounts of money into taking on blockbuster (ironic since BB was ultimately a failure). Basically you could buy a copy of a movie for the cost of a rental. Every time you put that DVD into your DVD player, it would charge you a few dollars and you could watch it as many times as you wanted for 48 hours. You essentially became your own blockbuster by having racks of DVD's and only paid to watch it when you wanted. Or, you could buy lifetime rental at full cost of the retail DVD price. They sank huge sums of money into this, it required an internet connection, with inputs that had to be manufactured into the machines. So brands like Sony etc... made SPECIAL machines for a CC product. I believe they sank over 1 BILLION dollars into this venture, that never caught on.
My friends and I still discuss the couple of years we worked at circuit city together near Dayton, Ohio. We have all moved on, obviously, and we've all had lucrative careers since, yet when we get together a few times a year, somehow our time at CC always comes up, and how fun that time was in our lives.
It wasn't all CC of course, we were experiencing many firsts during that period. Straight out of HS, 1st apartment we all had together, fun job (it was a great place to work). but it was certainly a big part of it.

Good riddance Circuit City. In their final years they became the king of bait and switch - there would be an amazing deals in the catalogs but the ads conveniently left out the fact that it only applied to the first 10 sold. That convinced me never to go there again and then the recession happened. Circuit City will be remembered as an example for other retailers never to pull that shit again.

Circuit City was a great place at one time, where you could actually touch and feel the electronics you were going to buy. I got an air conditioner delivered for $88 and a DVD-recorder that has lasted for 15 years. The story was the same old thing: brick and mortar stores, when confronted by other stores as well as the internet, were doomed. People liked being able to touch, feel and sample, but sadly, they then went on line or ordered from another entity...
I didn't know Circuit City had been around so long. I remember them popping up in my city in the late 80's. At first, I liked them better than Best Buy. But towards the end, I didn't see any difference between the two. Watching this also reminded me of a place called "Media Play" that I started frequenting in the late 90's. They seemed to have some CD's I couldn't find in BB or CC. Would love to see an episode of their demise, too. Great shows! I have been binge watching them lately!

The last time I went to Circuit city when they were closing, I bought the second season of South Park on DVD, that’s crazy.
I worked for them just shy of 2000. Was a great place, trained well, had high standards and paid well. Best Buy had moved in down the road and took the good management and department leads. Then the good sales people left to get paid without working so damn hard for commission. Some didn't make quite as much than CC commission but they had more stable income at BB.
Our closed store was bought and turned into a health food store chain.

I purchased my Xbox 360 during launch season at Circuit City and would go there when games were sold out at Best Buy. I was sad to see them go out of business, because they didn't even ask me for my ID when I purchased GTA 4 lol. Best Buy wants your drivers license, social security card, recent employers, proof that you aren't illegal, are you an organ donor? just to get an "M" rated game lol.
Gamestop is even worse. I went in with my nephew and they wouldn't let me buy an M rated game because I had an underage person with me. "Store policy" my ass.

When the electronics places went, they went quickly. When I moved to where I am now (Dayton Ohio) in '05, they had Rex, Circuit City, HH Gregg and Best Buy. Only BB remains (for now.)

Believe it or not, if you go to Ebay, or some online electronic retail stores, "new" VCRs are available for for $200 plus dollars. The main purpose of VCRs now is to convert the tapes to DVD or to your computer, laptop, tablet, and/or cell phone.

It's really just a front to sell phone contracts. Next time you go to the counter see if they ask you about your phone. The last time I was in a circuit city was 2008, and it was during a going out of business clearance sale. This also shows how wallstreet running things can be really bad for business. You can't treat a business, or it's employees like shit.
Absolutely and THAT transferred to the customers. I often went in there and got ZERO help. Employees were there just going through the motions and had little incentive to sell since they were hourly. It was sad I knew more than them and that was not the case early on when they had highly knowledgeable sales people on their floor. So the formula for failure is: Fire your highest commission employees. Fire the most knowledgeable. Replace with clueless employees and give them minimum wage.
The same "greed is good" wall street mentality is destroying the hospital industry as well. It's all about pleasing the shadow investors, and sacrificing quality/service/ for a few extra pennies. Scary.

It's a shame that most electronic stores are a thing of the past. There's nothing like checking out electronics in person. Checking out & buying electronics on the internet just isn't the same experience. And I miss making a special trip to Blockbuster video and picking out a video and hoping they have it in stock. Furthermore, there's nothing like going to the movie theater as opposed to streaming a movie online. As humans, we are losing the in person experiences that made life a little richer.

I remember this I worked at the Circuit City in my town from 2005 to the day the store closed at beginning of march 2009. and i have to say it was one of the best jobs I had had. our store was one of the few that was actually considerably productive till the end. I worked on the Product flow team at the time we unloaded trucks put out new merch and basically made sure everything ran smoothly. we where basically the back bone of the store. well at least at my store i don't know if it functioned differently at other stores.
The warehouse at the circuit city where I worked and which department I was apart was was the backbone of the store there.
