Harnessing nuclear energy is still very safe. Chernobyl and Fukushima are just extreme examples of what can go wrong, but working in these plants have just as much risk as any other industrial work.
The issue is more there's no political will to store the radioactive waste somewhere where it actually ought to be. Nuclear waste in the Americas is still being stored in temporary facilities for some reason...
My best friend Misha moved here to the US from Ukraine soon after the explosion, his brother died from a heart condition which was caused by the radiation. Misha recently passed away from the effects of alcoholism, I know the anniversary of his brothers death was always a trigger.

the radiation levels around chernobyl are varying so much, that one bush of grass isnt contaminated at all what so ever, then you take two steps down the road and the radiation is off the charts, one should drop the idea that radioactive radiation is like a sphere that glows like a lamp in the dark into all directions
if you liked that, watch "the battle of chernobyl", a documentary that goes into detail interviewing many of the men involved in building the sarcophagus. many of them suffered from lifelong illness related to the radiation exposure during their emergency efforts
FYI... nuclear power is very safe and very environmentally friendly since it is basically just steam power. Chernobyl was only dangerous because it was built by poor soviet standards and it was known as it was built that it had a flaw with it's cooling system and back up power system.
And the recent one in Japan? Three Mile Island? Thing is, you are not wrong (except for the steam power thing, as practically any generator using heat uses steam)... Though nuclear waste is not exactly environmentally friendly, it can be dealt with, and the overall impact of a nuclear station versus say, coal, is definitely lower. The problem though is the absolutely catastrophic damage that happens when something does goes wrong. It is rare, but the magnitude is just terrifying. However, it is pretty much the best we have and as fossil fuels get more and more scarce I would imagine we will be seeing a lot more nuclear power.
BushDid9/11 My point was that it does not matter how rare it is or why it happens, but that it does happen, and the scale of damage is staggering. Still, it is the best we have.

One of the interesting things about the health issues faced by those who were contaminated is that for many it didn't affect *them*, it affected the children they went on to have in the future, years after their exposure- thyroid cancer being the biggest one. Many people still live in the exclusion zone, who either refused to leave or left and came back, and they themselves are healthy, it's their kids who are suffering from it.
Every clip of the town, and I'm reminded of COD 4. The camera movements are like exactly the same for some shots. It just shows the amount of detail that go into certain games.

Well, I live in about 370km of the Chernobyl NPP, and here's few infor some people can find sorta interesting: First - It's real name is " V.I. Lenin Nuclear Power Station " Second - Radiation meters around the station and throughout the zone are not deadly everywhere - in fact, most of the territory is pretty safe. However it doesn't mean, that you won't occasionally walk into "phoning" (Highly radioactive) objects Third - Chernobyl itself is a small town at the edge of the zone - closer to Kiev. Fourth - the name Chernobyl - is one of few folk names for wormwood. Finally - due the scope of the disaster, many cities got them into problems. Though Cherkasy - city I live in is considered a Safe Zone, during nineties we got a lot of vehicles, that came from Chernobyl. And, sadly, my grandfather was working on vehicle service station and some time after he was diagnosed with blood cancer and died shortly. Also country to the north is called Belarus (pronounced as bel-ə-ROOSS ) and they make really good chocolate and biggest Soviet/Post-Soviet dump-trucks called "BelAZ" there =)
Dude, i love these videos. The narration is awesome. i love parts where you just sorta laugh and are all like "...well that sucks." Honestly, dont change man, these vids are perfect as is.
I just wanted to say that I just found your series tonight and I love it. I was just in the mood for misc. Disney facts until I reached your channel. I loved the one about the little abandoned Island from Disney. I also wanted to bring up the whole “delivery” comments Bc I see users who somehow forget that they’re not perfect either. A lot of people get jumbled when reading and/or speaking. The delivery improves in EVERY video which is fun to observe. It’s nice the reading is slightly imperfect ((I know that like a backhanded compliment, but hear me out)). I stutter & slur my words when I talk and it’s cool to hear Speakers just being natural. When you pronounce things wrong it’s a relief personally. Also I enjoy when you trail off because I have ADHD and I feel less alone. I like seeing improvements in content and I love being able to connect with the creators whether they see my comments or not. Thank you for taking the time to research and share all of the interesting abandoned places you find. I’ve learned a lot within just a few hours lmao. (‾̴̴͡͡▿•‾̴̴͡͡ʃƪ)
You should do digger land Kent abandoned orange off-road ride its on the brochure when I went there and they were hiding something and it looked messed up
"Before the disaster nuclear energy was seen as a safe form of energy" and it still is actually! its one of the cleanest and most renewable forms of energy if handled correctly!
I must admit, you got much better with narration as time went on! Great work. And fun fact, around four deaths were actually caused by a helicopter crash. The helicopter's blades hit one of the cranes, causing it to break apart and fall into the reactor.
Great Vid. Not sure how I found this channel?; but its awesome that I did. Went back and watched every ep and looking forward to more. My suggestion would be a video on......"Detroit"...dun dun dun Its sorta abandoned right? great show keep up the great work.
Freaken awesome episode Jake. Not only am I obsessed with abandoned placed, Chernobyl is my number one place, with Waverly Hills Sanatorium coming in a close second.
Ok, just discovered your channel, and loving it so far. However, this particular video had me crying laughing at the parts where you inserted the "Belarus" pronunciations😂.
I like your videos and all but honestly in the time it took you to butcher those important place names and then apologize for it repeatedly, you could've just looked up how to say them correctly once and been done with it.
Seriously. For example, "Belarus" is a very widely known pronounciation. I would expect anyone over 15 to be aware of Belarus. Like how do you attend school without encountering a single mention of Belarus? I actually do not understand how he didn't know how to say it. Even if he didn't know how to say it, how did he not look it up? Or even ask literally any person that he knows. Absolutely mind boggling. It feels like I am in some sort of bizarre parallel universe.
Duncan Prince It seems like he rushed thru this video as if he only made it because ppl asked for it. He usually puts forth a very good effort with the other places he's done, but he was joking around mispronouncing the name and laughing. I just found his channel and he was more respectful towards the other ones who were about disasters. JS
He dosnt give a flying absolutely shit about respecting anything. All he cares about is that ad revenue. Nobody cares about putting effort into videos nowadays. Honestly quite sad
Welcome back to my comment this is comment three this one is for you BSG. Thanks sincerely for using my comment it was so cool and it and keep up the videos.
Hey Jake! I'm really enjoying this abandoned series, I discovered it a few days ago, I love it. I've also been watching some of your other videos, and they're really good. Well done Jake! P.S: I was going to apply but I don't really have any experience >_
@@kenniboii192 and he has the opinion that if someone says something could be better than they could show how. That's all it is mate. I'm sure he didn't mean any harm by the statement, just a different way to say something.
Do an episode about Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. Was built in the 70's for millions as a sports & concert venue and sols a few years ago for the bargain price of one hundred thousand dollars and now remains abandoned in terrible disrepair!
Another cool little fact that I really like about Pripyat is that the amusement park that you see with the ferris wheel and bumper cars hadn't even opened to the public yet. It was set to open like a week or two after the Chernobyl accident. Those kids never even got to enjoy the amusement park. Nice video, finally one that's not about disney or epcot (lol)
3:52 Balars? That is the worst pronunciation of Belarus I have ever heard. It's pronounced Bell-ah-ruse, not Buh-lars or Buh-lair-us. I'm not even from Belarus, and I can pronounce it correctly.
There’s a documentary around on RUclips that extensively interviews Gorbachev - yes, *that* Gorbachev about the disaster. What I found most interesting was that not even he got all the information at first because parts of the government were afraid to tell him. When he found out later, he was *pissed*, and this is one of the things that kickstarted his policy of governmental openness and, eventually, the dismantling of the iron curtain.
Actually the town of Priypat and the reactor site itself is really stable now. The background radiation is nearly the same as it is anywhere else in the world, thanks to them moving a lot of the topsoil from the area.
he was laughing at himself he isn't being disrespectful he isn't making rude comments just lighten up a bit and don't complain about everything that isn't even true
Awesome!!! thank you for making a vid on Chernobyl. My boyfriend and I want to go visit Pripyat on our honeymoon as it's been a childhood dream for both of us to visit there.
Ive gotta say, you've really come a long way since your original videos, congrats! Looking forward to seeing ya keep developing your channel! Now If your looking for a damn near limitless source of abandoned coolness just do a quick search of Jersey! From theme parks, hotel developments, casinos and industrial complexes the history and lore is truly fascinating. Trust me, no shortage of material there.
I took the tour in April 2017. It is safe to take the tour as long as you only walk where the guides tell you. The cost was $125 for a translated tour. We did drive around the back side of the reactor in the tour bus, the side where the most fallout was blown in the initial explosion. Even though the windows were all closed in the bus, I got a metallic taste in my mouth as we drove across that narrow area. Another very interesting thing we saw in the exclusion zone was "Duga", an over the horizon Soviet radar installation. I thought Duga was as interesting as Pripyat and the power plant.
I like how he's talking about he two people who died during the explosion and then pretty much immediately after giggles about his mispronouncation. Kinda messed up
I wouldnt watch these vids if he acted sad about every tragedy. It would be too damn sappy. He must be doing something right to have as many subs as he does.

You should do digger land Kent abandoned orange off-road ride its on the brochure when I went there and they were hiding something and it looked messed up
Wow, you just had reached 25k subs in this video. Congrats on the progress now.
Another great video.
Not sure how I found your channel but I'm glad I did!
"Before the disaster nuclear energy was seen as a safe form of energy" and it still is actually! its one of the cleanest and most renewable forms of energy if handled correctly!
Abandoned: Disneyland Peoplemover
HOLY SHIT YOU KNEE
If you and exploring with Josh, Steve, John, and Cody did a collaboration together, that would be epic! Get working on it

Hey, throw in The Proper People & Dan Bell and it would be REALLY EPIC.
ThatDismountingFailure 😂
ThatDismountingFailure 😂
Your confidence when you speak has definitely grown a lot since this video.
Found this video very interesting, and have watched ALL of your abandoned videos. Seeing as it's 2019, can you do an update to this??
I’m bingeing on all your videos. Great content. Very informative and entertaining commentary!
It's not really abandoned beaches I'm pretty sure it was destroyed but could you do the Pokemon Theme Park that was opened in Japan in 2005?
what? there was a pokemon theme park???
When did that get made and how can it be abandoned?! (no seriously Pokemon is still really popular in Japan so I can't make sense of it)
It existed for not even half of 2005 in Japan.
1986 was my senior year in high school and I remember when this happened. I was really scared about the cloud of nuclear radiation coming our way.
Welcome back to my comment this is comment three this one is for you BSG. Thanks sincerely for using my comment it was so cool and it and keep up the videos.
CONGRATS ON NOW 400K+
YES I LOVE THESE THANK YOU FOR BLESSING MY FEED
Hey Jake! I'm really enjoying this abandoned series, I discovered it a few days ago, I love it. I've also been watching some of your other videos, and they're really good. Well done Jake!
P.S: I was going to apply but I don't really have any experience >_
You didn't do this justice. This isn't a Target closing. This was an irresponsible video.
Agreed, ALOT more effort could've went into this video. What a shame.
Wheres your chernobyl video thats soo perfect then?
@@71gdog everyone has a right to an opinion mate.
@@kenniboii192 and he has the opinion that if someone says something could be better than they could show how. That's all it is mate. I'm sure he didn't mean any harm by the statement, just a different way to say something.
I love this channel I love how it talks about places some channels don't talk about and it's fun to watch during quarantine 😊
Anyone reading this after HBO's Chernobyl?
"Nuclear energy was seen as a really safe form of energy" i mean it still is if the people handling it know what theyre doing
Umm, Ik this might sound annoying but could you do another Disney one? They are my favorite x3 Idk what else I abandoned thought o,o
Do an episode about Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. Was built in the 70's for millions as a sports & concert venue and sols a few years ago for the bargain price of one hundred thousand dollars and now remains abandoned in terrible disrepair!
jhhone Yes!!!!!! The same things gonna happen to The Palace of Auburn Hills once the Pistons move to downtown Detroit
B E L A R U S
B e l a r o o s
Another cool little fact that I really like about Pripyat is that the amusement park that you see with the ferris wheel and bumper cars hadn't even opened to the public yet. It was set to open like a week or two after the Chernobyl accident. Those kids never even got to enjoy the amusement park. Nice video, finally one that's not about disney or epcot (lol)
Barely even talked about it..?
Thank you so much Jake, this video actually helped me with most of my homework assignment, THANK YOU!!!!!
This is the first time I heard you swear 😅
LOL same 😭 I’m letting this auto play and I forget how much he used to giggle and stuff in these older videos, it’s got me laughing LMAO
Actually the town of Priypat and the reactor site itself is really stable now. The background radiation is nearly the same as it is anywhere else in the world, thanks to them moving a lot of the topsoil from the area.
I honestly find it pretty disrespectful and rude that you laugh and giggle throughout this whole video
he was laughing at himself he isn't being disrespectful he isn't making rude comments just lighten up a bit and don't complain about everything that isn't even true
Awesome!!! thank you for making a vid on Chernobyl. My boyfriend and I want to go visit Pripyat on our honeymoon as it's been a childhood dream for both of us to visit there.

What?
algebra!
Trust me, no shortage of material there.
do Geauga Lake!
Please do
+The Coaster Coast I was just going to say that! Yes please
I thought Duga was as interesting as Pripyat and the power plant.
you should become a professional narrator.
these videos should be on the history channel.... definitely appreciate these vidoes!!!
I like how he's talking about he two people who died during the explosion and then pretty much immediately after giggles about his mispronouncation. Kinda messed up
you know you fucked up when Hitler tells you that was 'kinda messed up'
I wouldnt watch these vids if he acted sad about every tragedy. It would be too damn sappy. He must be doing something right to have as many subs as he does.
Big like for these videos. And I like your narrating skills, with the occasional screw ups.
