Never miss a Rig Rundown: bit.ly/PG-RRnewsletter
Premier Guitar invaded Rival Sons’ soundcheck for a Rundown of Scott Holiday’s offsets, Oranges, and three boards worth of tone treats.
Holiday wanted a guitar that fit the sound and image of Rival Sons. He went with “Bluebird,” a 1999 Gibson Custom Historic 1965 Firebird VII Reissue. It’s totally stock and strung with Cleartone (.011-.050) strings.
When Holiday wants to get low and rumbly, he goes with this 2015 Kauer Baritone Banshee Custom, strung with Cleartone (.016-.071) strings.
For something hollow-ish, Holiday plays “Ol' Bess,” his 2014 Fano Alt de Facto Custom GF6.

That was without a doubt one of the best Rig Rundown episodes I've ever seen. Of course I'm a big Scott Holiday and Rival Son's fan. That being said, the fact that he did it himself, he talked a lot and had great stories, and he was super down-to-earth and appreciative of PG just was amazing! Thanks Premier Guitar and Scott!
John's a goofy guy and he annoys me some, but I got to thinkin... of COURSE he's goofy, this guy is living the dream?! He interviews famous guitar players and talks about gear - FOR A LIVING. I'd be goofy too.
The slide is a JetSlide by Gary Romero. Pros and cons: you can play in normal tuning and alternate chords and slide by keeping it on your finger. It avoids from picking up a slide and putting it away when playing chords. Once you get used to it, it's quite a nice gizmo, the 2 main things to know is that you have to measure it right (Gary offers several sizes) and not to wear a ring on the finger you use it on, as it interferes with your playing. Outside from that, it's a great invention, quite underrated, it's easy to use and it sounds right. \m/
His buddy being given a "hard time" from Gibson has new meaning here in 2019.
This is an insanely talented band and this guy is phenomenal
Surely we can get an update in 2023
"I can't afford that guitar! I've got two kids" He says as he grabs one of his 10 guitars.
Happy to be a dork!
I read an interview with Steve Miller years ago where he said he used a firebird exclusively in the studio to record Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams.
I'm a simple man; I see a beautiful Firebird in the thumbnail and I click on the thumbnail...
I’d never heard of Rival Sons before this rundown, but you can bet your ass I’ve listened to them constantly after! Love it love the board and love the guitars, and he seems like such a cool guy and I love it man
I like that JB doesn't rush everything with these rundowns.
Outstanding run down from a great guitar player. Great interview too!.
John Bohlinger's jacket is pretty badass, but Scott’s mustache is damn majestic as well
Scott is really such cool guy. Thank you very much for the video, it was pleasure to watch it.
Agree this was packed with information and it never gets better than when a musician is deeply involved in the technical aspects of shaping their own sound.
I love excited Scott is. I wish all the interviews were like this
Two points to make on this:
Scott Holiday oozes cool!!
Got to be one of the best ring one downs I've seen and i'm not even that much of a Rivel Son's fan. Great chemistry between those two!
