It is so unbelievable how this college garage band became a world-wide sensation but when I listen, I can see why REM is so awesome. Great song writing/ great sound

I was always a HUGE REM fan from the early 80's. I got married in 92 when I was 33. This album came out a week before our wedding. We drove out to Calfornia, we live in Iowa. 2 weeks. This played (AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE) about half the time we were in the car. My wife passed away about 5 years ago. Still think of her deeply when I hear any of this album. Especially NIGHT SWIMMING. Miss you Teresa.

I am 75 years old, and I didn't pay much attention to R.E.M. in the day, even though I lived only a few miles from Athens, GA. I was more into the B52s. I have rediscovered R.E.M. and their songs. They produced such great music. You never know how your attitudes will change as you get older. I wish I had seen them live.

As a Muslim from the Middle East, it is through the brilliantly crafted songs of R.E.M that I first became exposed to the greatness of Western culture. R.E.M songs remind me of the happy times of my childhood when optimism ruled the day. Things have changed for the worse since then, but I will always have R.E.M hits to fall back on.
Thank you Michael Stipe for brilliant works of art! I'll be forever grateful.

Their songwriting at its best had that quality of making you think you're on the cusp of grasping something life changing. It's a rare and precious quality. All I can say is listen to Murmur from start to finish. All the songs have this quality from start to finish even though Stipe's voice at the time was a literal murmur and it's almost impossible to understand what he's saying and even when you can the meaning is impenetrable. It's the feeling that matters anyway.

Amazing range and so haunting. I'd never listened to R.E.M. before and a friend introduced me about 30 years ago. I was never going to escape the spell after the that summer - we used to go onto the common ground overlooking Cowes (Isle of Wight) seafront and sit there listening to a few of the albums on a ghettoblaster. We'd always drop ecstasy (White Dove) and just listen all night 'till them batteries were no more, in love with the music, in love with the surroundings in the wee morning hours, the sea rippling gently and _Night Swimming_ or _Orange Crush_ guiding us gently 'till the sun came up. And in love with each other.
That instant psychic group love that MDMA allows you to shortcut into :)
Ah those days, I'd give anything to be able to recapture them and the unrequited love I suffered with the amazing girl who introduced me not only to the songs of REM, but also *how* to listen to that great music :)

I keep coming back to this song and while the super... heartfelt and "clean" feeling of the arrangement is excellent, I think it's the lyricism that really draws me in the most. More than being able to verify whether or not things we see on broadcast are the way they're said to be from a philosophical perspective, there's a sense of reverence for dreams and for the human imagination here, I think. It's honestly beautiful, subtly funny and addictive to boot. Awesome song.

My younger brother committed suicide last weekend by overdosing on something. He was found with headphones on, presumably listening to something. This is his youtube account. He made a playlist containing 6 songs that was edited the day he passed. This is one of the 6 songs. With the method he used, he was dead after about 30 minutes, probably unconscious around 12 minutes. I like to think that it was peaceful for him with his music on. There is somethng about REM that will always resonate with certain people. A fresh, clean and distinctive melodic sense, subtle but skilled musicianship, memorable lyrics that are mysterious yet sincere. Michael Stipe's beauty and sensitivity, his physicality and outsider mentality. Political/social principles not forced on the audience, but always present. And also the fact that they called it a day before any of that started to feel stale and repetitive, and returned to lower profile lives in humility and gratitude. Will there ever be another music act like that again? I doubt it.

I love the story of the song: Stipe struggled to find the right words and was against the clock because the album was due soon. Instead of working through it in the studio, the band took a few days off, during which Stipe listened to the track on a cassette in his rental car until he found inspiration. "When we reconvened, Michael walked into the studio, sang, 'Man On The Moon' once, and walked out," Peter Buck said in the In Time compilation. "We were all stunned. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Andy Kaufman in the wrestling match
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
    Monopoly, Twenty-one, Checkers, and Chess

    [Pre-Chorus 1]
Now, Andy, did you hear about this one?
Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Andy, are you goofing on Elvis? Hey, baby
    Are we losing touch?
    [Chorus]
If you believed they put a man on the moon
    Man on the moon
If you believed there's nothing up his sleeve
    Then nothing is cool
    [Verse 2]
Moses went walking with the staff of wood
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Newton got beaned by the apple good
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Egypt was troubled by the horrible asp
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Mister Charles Darwin had the gall to ask
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
    [Pre-Chorus 2]
Now, Andy, did you hear about this one?
Tell me, are you locked in the punch?
Hey, Andy, are you goofing on Elvis? Hey, baby
    Are you having fun?

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Here's a little ghost for the offering
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Here's a truck stop instead of Saint Peter's
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

@@zyourzgrandzmaz I never said they weren't famous, I personally wasn't as into REM in the 90s as I've become today and even though I like them more now, "Shiny Happy People" is by far my least favorite REM song.
But to address the sarcasm looking though the lens of now: Not everyone is into a band or should be just because they're big. Are you into Cloud Rap? -- dude, it's super big in 2020, better get on board. The most watched video on YT is "Despacito" 6.8 Billion views and it's the same trite four chord low hanging I-V-vi-IV schlock I hear in everything now.
