My boyfriend , my soul mate, passed away 6 months ago unbelievably suddenly. It’s insane that someone can walk out the door one morning, and you’ll never see them again. He loved this song. He had eclectic music taste and played R.E.M. a lot. He loved this song. My favorite memories are of him and I sitting and listening to music and talking. I don’t myself connecting with many people to be honest. He and I could talk about anything for hours, even after 13 years together. This is the first time I’ve listened to this song since it happened.

    Hey kids, rock and roll
Nobody tells you where to go, baby
    [Chorus]
What if I ride, what if you walk?
What if you rock around the clock?

    Hey kids, shake a leg
Maybe you're crazy in the head, baby
    [Chorus]

    Tick-tock, tick-tock
Maybe I ride, maybe you walk
Maybe I drive to get off, baby

Ollie, Ollie in come free, baby
    Hey, kids, where are you?

It would be interesting to hear Stipe's thoughts on those lyrics. To me it seems to suggest the kids are not free, but are given the illusion of freedom. Especially in the line - "Maybe I'll ride, maybe you walk, maybe I drive to get off, baby." In other words those really driving the direction of the world get off on their power over others, while kids are encouraged to be rebellious and rock n roll and feel free as long as they don't get in the way of the drivers.

One of the best songs ever made on Earth. I remember when I saw R.E.M live at the Globe in Stockholm, Sweden. It was back in 2004. They did this song. Stipe screamed out parts of the lyrics in some kind of agony. I get goosebumps even today when I think of it. Me and my brother was consistent that there are not much in this world that can beat the song "Drive"....

I'm so depressed, because i'm getting old. I remember when the Automatic For The People album was released and I heard the song Drive for the first time. I was about 8 or 9 at the time. I liked this piece very much because it is very beautiful in terms of music. Now, years later, I like it even more, because from the perspective of those almost thirty years past, it is incredibly emotional. Time flies, unfortunately. All young people think that they will never be old, that it does not concern them, because it is so distant that it is incomprehensible. Unfortunately, we age so quickly that you don't even see it, and only after 10, 20 or 30 years do we realize it.

    • @astonphillips1534

youll be surprised to know some young people, like myself, are terrified of getting old. Some older music, especialy the type my dad likes just seem a century away from my mates music taste which makes me feel almost happy that most people dont have that type of connection with 70's, 80's and 90's music just cos they only associate themselves with the UKTOP40 rather than actual music like rem, Toto, metallica, prodigy, faithless etc. It is ok to be depressed about as theres nothing more depressing than death, but just try to enjoy to be alive in a time and place where you enjoy great music
