I think you are having an instant negative reaction due to the plonked tablets of yore, a la C class. In the case of the this new 5 series, they've basically removed a lot of the bulk behind the infotainment. As someone who absolutely hates tacked on screens, this doesn't really bother me, in fact I kinda like this approach.
All I will say is, as a 20-something year old it pains me to realize that none of the luxury brand offerings are cars that I will ever aspire to own. A new generation should never be a downgrade
Like the majority of dreamt up motoring laws it's all about generating revenue for governments / insurance companies and next to nothing to do with safety
As a happy private buyer of new 5 series since 2004 I fear my current 520d will be my last. BMW have seriously lost the plot. Too big. Poor (no) engine choice. And as for the interior design. Not for me.
I'm just appalled by the engine choices, basically the main reason why people buy 5 series and all you get is a shitty 2 litre and shitty electric motors wtf are we doing?
Well I can't wait to decide on upgrading my current 520d next year. It's between the new 520d [it is available in diesel in South Africa] or the new X3. I will not consider another brand.
Disappointing from BMW once again. I had an E34 followed by an E39, followed by an E38 - best cars ever. Would not go near a newer BMW, even with a barge pole.
Wow . Very impressive line up there, mate ! As you well know, the The E39 was possibly the greatest car of the 90’s and perhaps following decade. This one has an interior of a MG4, and the front look of a Skoda . All the elegance and class has been diluted out of it and that scrolling menu ! WTF?! How dangerous is that! Awful. Give me £3000 E39 ANY day !
Even the Skoda Octavia has a bigger boot and more rear leg room. It costs half the price of a 5 series. Why do so few luxury car manufacturers focus on practicality?
Too big, too ugly, too heavy, missing the classy analogue instruments that previous series used to have. Touchscreen and plastic panels are no substitute for traditional knobs and true action buttons. Overall the interior is a step backwards in ergonomics. BMW no longer understands what European buyers want.
if you loose your ”home base” and support in Europe then you loose everything. The hardcore fans are the ones that build up the brand value and do lots of free marketing for the brand and make the brand cool. Personally I suspect that the German brands collude and decide that they will all remove buttons and have this giant screen instead (they have been caught before doing that) Seems like most potential buyers dont like it. So my advice is for the German economy sake - listen to your buyers.
No thanks. Ill keep my G30 thanks. Downgrade in terms of looks, interior styling (for me), looks like quality of interior is poorer too. Drive train options are boring and the cost of them has just exploded through the roof! Think the proper 5 series is dead. Will only sell to company car buyers wanting a good BIK figure. The Skoda equivalent looks nicer, is a damn site cheaper and looks more ergonomically designed. Never thought I would be saying this but BMW have lost the plot it feels like.
It's very tall for a saloon which makes the proportions all wrong. The front bumper graphics are terrible. That black section that overlaps the kidney grill makes it look chinless and weak. Rear lights are pretty nice. Interior looks nice enough. But the shiny black plastic cheapens it.
The Germans have a fixation to make cars bigger with every new model. People generally want smaller, lighter cars these days for better fuel economy. Seems to me this has been lost on them. As for overly bright headlights, it's dangerous with the British habit of flashing them to high beam to signal a thanks or allowing you out at a junction when a simple wave of the hand is sufficient or flash the lights off and on at night
As a 24 year + BMW owner (12 years of 5’s and 12 years of X5s) I’ve held on to my G05 X5 for 5 years now because I’m just not inspired by the latest designs (and prices are crazy!) I’m wedded to the brand because I’ve experienced superb reliability especially in this latest car.
They can't afford to get this wrong...in the late nineties the E39 was by far the best car in the world that was never bettered in its 8 year life, looks like they have played it safe,Shame no M550i though.
Personally I don't think they should even have these huge long displays. Eyes should be on the road ahead. I think knobs and switches are better for helping to keep eyes on the road.
They're frowned upon due to emissions/particulates. There's not a lot of new diesels around. The general trend is towards a smooth drivetrain like an EV.
It’s no looker that’s for sure, p*ss poor engine range (that isn’t lumbered hybrid BS and extra cost because of it too), I’m not bothered massively by touch screens but I don’t think BMW’s implementation of them is very good, confusing array of smaller icons which just makes things more frustrating that if a bit of thought went into it.

I owned BMWs for 12+ years, two 1 series, one 3 series (F30) and one 5 series (G30), and I always admired and LOVED all the 5 series since I was a kid. This is a big DISAPPOINTMENT. and… I can hardly see one on the road.
Not having a diesel in the line up ultimately leads to more CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere than sticking with petrol. Most people will just run on petrol dragging the hybrid system around.
2:13 in BMWs adaptive lights means that they move left and right. High beam assist is where the high beam lights come on and off based on vehicles in front
Very good review. I am sticking with my 2019 5 Series. The performance and economy of the 2 litre petrol engine doesn't appeal in the same way as the diesel. Also the interior is no longer leather and the lack of physical buttons for the climate control and IDrive is poor. I think the new 520i M Sport is very expensive for what it is.
No felt lining in the door bins, unbelievable. I also remember when bmw hard plastics used to have a think soft touch layer over them which was part of why they stood out as a luxury brand. Now you look at the trim surrounding the seat controls and it is the same type of finish you’d get on a Kia. Yes I know hard plastic will wear better without that thin rubberised-like coating (that would typically wear away, melt, etc.), but it was just another luxury touch that used to make German cars stand out.
The rubber door seals also used to be half a kind of flocked finish to give a more luxurious experience. They’ve done away with that too it appears. Between the cost of having way too many models and the cost to produce electric vehicles, bmw must be looking for savings constantly.

As much as I love EVs and Hybrids if you want a 5er find yourself a 6cyl late E39 with a manual gearbox. 530i etc. dont bother with a V8, you want the 6 as the front suspension is entirely different. Install a modern HU and enjoy the last real 5er
What gets me is, even with the I5 starting at £68,000 you still have to add the comfort pack option up to the £90,000 version. How can say an MG4 for £35,000 have all these extras fitted as standard when all the big boys charge extra.
A 2025 5 series a car than can cost well over 80.000 euro's and the camera quality of the 360 view is appalling. How can this still pass as fine in 2024, were smartphones that cost 200 euro's have better camera's....
I’m glad I ordered the last model in 2022 before this one came out. Sat in one of these in the showroom and felt really disappointed… certainly feels like BMW are trying to cut corners at the moment. Not a fan of the new idrive system… as you’ve pointed out, it’s too busy and not user friendly when you’re on the road. Sorry BMW but I won’t be replacing my current 5 series for one of these!
About as appealing as chlamydia. My wife drives a 5 year old Honda Fit (JDM Jazz). After watching this video, I've realised that it's as quick to 60 as a 520i (does 100kph in 7.6 seconds), better equipped than a 520i (it has climate control and leather seats, but also heated and ventilated seats), more spacious than a 520i (I'm 6'2" and easily fit in the back with the front seat in my position), better looking than a 520i (just look at the thing. The Fit isn't pretty, but at least it ain't ugly) and much more reliable than a 520i (mechanics don't call them B M Trouble You for nothing). Badges are expensive and come with a lot of compromises.
G31 (LCI) is a better looking car imho. BMW has some great models (M3 touring) but it's a bit too plastic (alu look) lately, too much cost cutting and too much tupperware/ali express looks.
Funny thing to mention that all things that you say are standard in the UK or a no cost upgrade, are not here in NL. powered seats only in a 2500€ package, trims from 400€, veganza €550, makes the touring 530e minimum 80k€ car
Had too many problems with my BMW 520d, dealership servicing costs were a nightmare, had to get rid of it, plus it was too big for most UK parking spaces whether in supermarkets or shopping centres. Had another BMW 2 series before and had problems with cabin fumes, loose plastics falling off everywhere. Expensive to fix and not worth it. Gave up on BMWs because of dodgy thieving dealerships out there to rob you.
Every video I see of the 5 series people hate it in the comments. I have driven the new one. It was very nice but went the X5. I don’t love the lack of buttons. It’s crazy to have to always touch the screen.

I have BYD Song and I decided not to buy BMW 5 cause of quality of a battery. 90,000km and hello battery problems. Warranty is over, easier to buy a new battery.
I love the new 5 series, actually all the BMW are looking better than ever before (at least for me). And the numbers tell that they are selling like warm bread…
If you think this has a devisive look, check out the new 1 series. I thought ugliness has a limit in car design, but bmw designers got creative and surpassed the threshhold.
