Never have I met someone, apart from my son, who can be so obsessive with a detail like the sound - or absence of it - of the trunk door. Love your quirks Thomas, never ever change. Another satisfying review, 👍
In general, there are a lot of cost savings in g60 versus g30, lots of g30 users are complaining about this. The car is more towards the lower class in terms of material used, equipment, and options that are no longer available.
Yep. There are lots of little things like the rear luggage cover, no opening tailgate that are petty cost cutting. The biggest con is the giant screen in lieu of physical buttons: a fraction of the cost for what is a glorified child’s tablet.
Yeap. Last summer I was trying not BMW but mercedes and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. German carmakers, particularly the premium ones are cutting too much, especially in terms of materials. I am not saying the Astra/308 Will last you longer but, getting out of a A class and going into any of those 2, the A class felt poorly assembled and ... Mondane. I had a way higher sensation of luxury in the PSA cars than on the mercedes ones. Now I am getting the feeling bmw is doing exactly the same: counting on the badge and not in the car to make sales.
I like how you pay attention to door closing sound and how the seat fold for example. These are things that make a 5 series feel different than other cars
This one looks way more better than the saloon. I have to say this language fits the kombi. Now the saloonseems like an afterthought. Always glad to see more kombis in an suv world. Some actual useful and practical cars
Looks like we are unable to open the tailgate window independently anymore. Trunk space of BMW design is just perfect. Even the compartment arrangement.
Agreed, button FTW, not only better control/usability but it adds to the design and feel of the vehicle. Sadly children are given smartphones almost from birth so their minds will be wired for that user interface - however by the time they are old enough for this car it will not exist [and if it did it'll probably be even more unaffordable!] so why should the generations buying now suffer for some marketing department thinking of those who ain't gonna buy this car?
This is my dream car! I currently have a Volvo V90 Cross Country and am looking for its future replacement. Here in the US, our options are limited as everyone is brainwashed into thinking SUVs are the only choice. I will check out your driving review too as I am curious how it fares against the comparable MB.
Great looking car for me being an existing touring owner , i would miss 1. The split rear window (i use that a lot especially in uk car parks, when someone parks right up to your rear bumper ) 2. No felt in the door pockets 3. Panoramic roof doesn’t open . Great video Thomas keep up the great work
So happy Thomas that the car industry now asks YOU for advice on materials/equipment when only a few years ago the industry ridiculed & despised your views on animal free leather. You are the David who took on Goliath and won. Respect to you Thomas
@@autogefuehl I recall how Thomas was lambasted by the ex CEO of Rolls Royce for suggesting the use of animal free materials. Is it just a coincidence that the CEO with such outdated thinking was replaced ?
8:50 Why should BMW make that piece of plastic look or feel nice? Is the price not already high enough? Reviewers often complain about cheap/scratchy plastic in places that intended to be durable. I do not get it.
I really look forward your review of your personal car! I have always wondered what kind of car you own yourself Thomas! I understand that sometimes people think that you are biased based on what car you own but i honestly think that you are one of the least biased car-reviewers.
Love the different taillights on this touring version … I was disappointed with them in the sedan version where they looked like they ripped off AMG GT 4 door, Toyota RAV4 and Audi A7
Hi Thomas. Once again, I appreciate the finer details you mention, door closing sound, seat folding mechanism, and interior lighting. I don't understand why BMW allowed a disjointed LED strip across the dash. It just looks incongruent. Hard pack material is not acceptable in this car. Especially since the previous model had soft touch on the entire door. Even the F30 3 series has vinyl on the lower door panel. Perhaps hard pack is more resistant to scuffs, but it feels cheap. BMW can do better.
So continuing the trend of cost savings from the limousine, trunk cover is not retracting like at the G31, the tailgate window (a trademark and also perhaps a selling point sometimes compared with A6 Avant) not openable, release of the backseats seems to be now manual and not electrical like at G31 and these only at the first sight.
Feels that the BMW design of current era has matured and feels consistent. Love the return of old style flush door handles in many new cars. From negative side, 5 series is way too large for my needs or small towns now.,,
That's what I was waiting for! I bought G31 based on your review 😂 But G31 all models got air suspension in the back as standard... Then they removed classic 5 touring electric trunk cover... Did they at least keep that rear glass can be opened independently? At least they kept smooth rear seat folding mechanism. I also see they removed emergency triangle cover that was nicely hidden behind the plastic... G31 had at least half padded door storage compatment... And the rear arm rest cup holders were way more unique in G31... So BMW is cutting corners in robustness, comfort and accessibility on each part of the car and for what... Flashy light bars, big unintuitive screens and touch buttons! It better to get G31 LCI while you still can... It would be interesting to see side by side comparison of G31 and this... But I wouldn't change my G31 for this, as it is properly German overengineered.
looks so much better than the sedan, still find the front ugly af but now at least the rest of the car looks nicer, tho the base model front looks much better than the ones with black trim
Good to see bmw figured out how to have dynamic steering rear wheels without it impacting the trunk space, this was a lost feature that bothered me when ordering the new E Class combi.
Excellent reveal, Thomas. Thanks. Can't wait for your test drive ) Really like the new 5 series. Would gladly take the regular 5 series as second car )
Their strategy to have one platform for all drive trains does mean it’s a jack of all and master of none (ice V e). As a combi, it’s still smaller than Tesla Model Y, many of the VW ID models are similar for luggage. Imagine of the front had storage and the rear leg room was better- it’s a long car but not that spacious. If you get the E model and put a roof box on, the range will drop a lot- that’s where a better packaged electric model makes more sense
Lmao looking at those rims. I lost 7 tires and a 21 inch rim in 22 months with my m550 xdrive driving on North Texas roads. Once 2 tires off of the front passenger within 24 h, the fronts are especially vulnerable to diving into pavement defects. They felt so bad for me that they didn’t charge me (tire was insured). No more sport sedans, or sport anything, until I move back to SFlorida. Living with a f150 asphalt remover now, helping Texas move back to the 19th century.
that sensor panel sticking out of the middle of the grilles is absolutely absurd looking! 👀 All the gloss black trim looks so cheap, like something off a Renault Clio. BMW just make really ugly cars now
Given that I don't see myself spending money for any other body shape than an estate, this is appealing and it'll be fun to see what of the small problems will be fixed for production model. Personally, I have to add that if there has to be a panoramic glass roof, it's great that this one at least has a proper sliding fabric cover. The glass roof is a feature many companies love to push down the throat and doing plenty of winter driving, something I'd pay to not have. I hate the cold eminating down to the neck from those pointless glass roofs when it's -30 C..But even a fairly thin fabric cover provides surprising amounts of insulation.
The note made about the Door Pockets and lack of some sort of felt material to stop items sliding around. This is why I love this channel, and the sort of practical approach to reviews, because that would be something that we as customers would note during ownership. Keep it up sir👍
I would like to see comparison video with G31, pros and cons, usability, usable space, practicality, pocket size, safety, quality, used materials and reasons why to buy G61, instead of G31. A do not see any now 🧐 That missing rear window opening is 🤦💩
Another great presentation, love your videos! To me sunroofs should always be possible to open. I have had many BMWs with sunroof and I have never had one where it squeaks! And many of my cars has been 20 years+ . However I have heard that the sunroofs for the US market are different and can be opened. Can you give feedback to the BMW people that we also would like to have that on the option list in Europe!? I read the presentation in Norway today and they were claiming that the luggage compartment is 570 litres. I haven`t checked the specs at the BMW website so I do not know what is correcct. Keep up the good work! I look orward to the testdrive! :-)
Thanks! 570 l is correct. Also in our data sheet, just spelling mistake by me. Roof: yea the US sedan also is available with a small sunroof that can be opened. Touring not
Based on this. It's better looking car than the new sedan. However I don't see a single reason to uppgrade my exsisiting 530e G31 to this. Why did BMW remove possibility to open back window separately? I Use that like 80% of the time.
There has never been a more frustrating time in the car market as a buyer. EVs are ugly AF or weird compromises like this one where they recycle the platform and design of an ICE to make an EV. I want an EV, and maybe I would even be willing to pay premium prices like those of BMW, but not for a compromise like this 5 series, ever.
(16:40) ... yeah, I prefer all-metal roofs myself, because of all the problems with glass in the roofs (that your mechanics mention, but which are rife everywhere on automotive forums) ... they are hard to keep clean, they add weight and cost, they can crack (and in many cases even shatter/explode) from kicked up or falling debris (rocks/branches) or from temperature differentials over time (heat/cold, on a flat surface), they can be annoying heat-wise and light-wise in cars where you can't shut out the roof-glass light, and they can be much worse in a rollover accident than all-metal roofs.
I was going for the i5 sedan before I watched this video. Now, I am torn between the touring version vs the sedan. 😊 As usual, it all comes down to what the wife wants. 😅 I know I might be in the minority, but I like the Cape York Green metallic color. I also like the interior white colored seats.
BMW stopped selling the Kombi/Touring/Estate in South Africa, I think it was not a good move. Especially now, I think there is a sense of being bored with everything being SUV. Great review Thomas the Cat.
Hi, thanks for a good review again but I have a question. What's the luggage capacity for the new 5-series Touring? I have today a 530d x-Drive Touring 2023 and will go for the same engine again....
It is still too soon to cut ICE models for Europe, IMO. With PHEV's you end up using the ICE mostly and dragging battery and electric motor, which take chunk of fuel tank capacity and trunk space. There are still lots of potential buyers who find battery charging impractical at the moment. Opening sunroof is a must. Saving on material quality is a no-no in this class.
No, I drive a Passat GTE for 7 years now, and I use mainly the electric engine...about 66% of the yearly distance...AND if you start a long journey a full battery reduces the consumption for about 1.5l/100km for the first 250km...don't know the size of the Battery in the BMW PHEV, but the larger the longer you reduce consumption. In the Passat B9, the Batterie has grown from 10kwh to 25kwh, which means a longer distance to save fuel. And regarding weight, I hear the same lies again and again... Can only compare VW, since I know the figures by heart..my Passat weighs about 1800kg...and ID7 as similar car...2200kg...400kg more!!! If I load my Passat with 400kg it feels almost overloaded... The electric motor is just a 10cm Ringmotor inside the DSG in this case...you do not even recognize it, compared to a pure ICE car. Only the Battery adds about 200kg to the weight of a Passat with the "small" ICE...a Diesel weighs exactly the same like the Plugin and overcompensates the Battery weight. After 20 Years driving 6Cylinder TDIs...I would never go back to a diesel.
@@josefv-y8m Well, in my place, battery chargers are scarse and charging at home is not an option. I heard that G30 545e has only 45-liter tank capacity and I know that its boot capacity is quite smaller because of reduced height. So, you end up with a 5-meter car which is quite big (and expensive) for city driving and is not practical for longer journeys.
The exterior design is way better than the sedan, but with the same problems that kick the 5 series out of the premium segment: cheap and uncomfortable ui and no opening in the glass roof.
My F10 has felt lining in the door panels, glove box and that small compartment next to the steering wheel. I know it's a minor detail but that's what a luxury car is supposed to have and feel like. It's the attention to detail. The plasticky feel of the door panels are really budget car quality 😢 I feel the VW Golfs MK7.5 have a similar build quality
I own a Mercedes Benz E-Klass.. it´r probably going top be the last one i own.. This car looks stunning. And i love how BMW makes it so easy deciding to go for an EV but getting the same car. Thats what Mercedes can't handle which i don't understand. Can´t wait to order the i5 hopefully soon. 🖤 Such a great video as always. Liebe Grüße aus Hamburg ;)
The net separating the trunk from the page anger compartment used to be integrated as a detachable part of the trunk cover. I assume now it will be an extra paid option.

Never have I met someone, apart from my son, who can be so obsessive with a detail like the sound - or absence of it - of the trunk door. Love your quirks Thomas, never ever change. Another satisfying review, 👍
thanks my friend :)
Doesn’t the rear window open anymore?
Same question from me
Yeah same question from me, I really hope it does. Otherwise this is a lot better looking than the sedan
It does not anynore. Been using this feature a lot
@@Remigijus86 What a shame.
@@Remigijus86 shame. Really preferred previous 5 and 3 series touring because of this feature
The window at the back doesn't open independently anymore? I really liked that feature.
Much nicer than the saloon but prefer chrome detailing around windows. Interior is way too complicated in my opinion.
one of the best new cars video on youtube
highly appreciated!
In general, there are a lot of cost savings in g60 versus g30, lots of g30 users are complaining about this. The car is more towards the lower class in terms of material used, equipment, and options that are no longer available.
I agree, I love my G31 520i, haver had it since 2017 has been dead reliable for 150k+ miles. Everything feels so solidly built.
Yep. There are lots of little things like the rear luggage cover, no opening tailgate that are petty cost cutting. The biggest con is the giant screen in lieu of physical buttons: a fraction of the cost for what is a glorified child’s tablet.
@@jeffreybunting7480 not to forget scratchy plastic on the underside of the doors…
Probably to compete with price in China
👍
This one looks way more better than the saloon. I have to say this language fits the kombi. Now the saloonseems like an afterthought. Always glad to see more kombis in an suv world. Some actual useful and practical cars
The rear looks great, front still is kind of weird.
Not terrible, but definitely a step backwards from its predecessor.
Looks like we are unable to open the tailgate window independently anymore. Trunk space of BMW design is just perfect. Even the compartment arrangement.
Trunk / boot volume is 570 l as stated in our data spec sheet, mis-spelled that in the voice part
Doesn't the Touring come with an air suspension on the rear as standard in the normale combustion models like on the G31, F11 and E61?
The most gorgeous wagon today. I love the V90-like hatch window angle. Great review!
Looks better than the sedan, not sure how that rear quarter will look with 18" wheels though...😂
I’m with you Thomas, buttons all the way 👍🏻
way to go
Agreed, button FTW, not only better control/usability but it adds to the design and feel of the vehicle. Sadly children are given smartphones almost from birth so their minds will be wired for that user interface - however by the time they are old enough for this car it will not exist [and if it did it'll probably be even more unaffordable!] so why should the generations buying now suffer for some marketing department thinking of those who ain't gonna buy this car?
the change in tail lights looks way more BMW than the sedan. big improvement. still unfortunate in the front.
'have I activated some terminator or something?' had me laughing a bit😅
=)
This is my dream car! I currently have a Volvo V90 Cross Country and am looking for its future replacement. Here in the US, our options are limited as everyone is brainwashed into thinking SUVs are the only choice. I will check out your driving review too as I am curious how it fares against the comparable MB.
I’m definitely team chrome! Black kidneys still look cheap aftermarket in my opinion. Never got used to it that BMW started offering it from factory 😫
Agreed
Yes I too prefer the classic trims, elegance wins over sports looks when it comes to luxury touring vehicles.
Great looking car for me being an existing touring owner , i would miss 1. The split rear window (i use that a lot especially in uk car parks, when someone parks right up to your rear bumper ) 2. No felt in the door pockets 3. Panoramic roof doesn’t open . Great video Thomas keep up the great work
Thanks m8 keep following!
And no cargo net dividing the boot from the passenger compartment by the looks of it. Handy for the hounds
I loved my 5 series touring years ago. Hoping they bring the i5 Touring to Canada
They will
Gorgeous yes! Thank you Germany for the Touring 😎
So happy Thomas that the car industry now asks YOU for advice on materials/equipment when only a few years ago the industry ridiculed & despised your views on animal free leather. You are the David who took on Goliath and won. Respect to you Thomas
Thanks so much my friend!
I could be snyde and say, thats just marketing and they dont really care
Depends on the brand and the people of course, but times have changed and also customers care so they have to care
@@autogefuehl I recall how Thomas was lambasted by the ex CEO of Rolls Royce for suggesting the use of animal free materials. Is it just a coincidence that the CEO with such outdated thinking was replaced ?
Maybe 😏😄
The front looks like a Skoda Fabia LOL
A bit of an insult to Skoda Fabia, that car at least has decent proportions.
yes you are right no offense to the skoda@@UhOhUmm
Skoda doesn't overtweak their designs mad respect to them ❤
”Is the dark side stronger?”
”No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.”
😂
8:50 Why should BMW make that piece of plastic look or feel nice? Is the price not already high enough? Reviewers often complain about cheap/scratchy plastic in places that intended to be durable. I do not get it.
"Have I activated some terminator?" Thomas IS the Terminator!
😂👍
I really look forward your review of your personal car! I have always wondered what kind of car you own yourself Thomas! I understand that sometimes people think that you are biased based on what car you own but i honestly think that you are one of the least biased car-reviewers.
the sweeping design of the touring/estate is always better than the saloon
How can people prefer SUV’s over this??!! It should have stayed under 5m tho. What’s next, 6m?
I don't like how the 7 and 5 series look like. I don't like in general what BMW is doing in terms of exterior design recently.
Love the different taillights on this touring version … I was disappointed with them in the sedan version where they looked like they ripped off AMG GT 4 door, Toyota RAV4 and Audi A7
1:11 In Czechia and Slovakia, we also call these Kombi, or informally “kombík”
In Sweden we also call them Kombi
BMW can do better.
thanks keep following !
I love how the black accent on the rear bumper is already scratched to the max showing holograms under the light and this is not even driven car. LOL.
Feels that the BMW design of current era has matured and feels consistent. Love the return of old style flush door handles in many new cars. From negative side, 5 series is way too large for my needs or small towns now.,,
That's what I was waiting for! I bought G31 based on your review 😂
But G31 all models got air suspension in the back as standard...
Thanks 🙏 yeah valid points
Estate from the rear looks nicer than the sedan. Front? Ehhh
Damn, Thomas knew exactly what I was thinking.
😁
I am with you, Thomas. I don't like the brightwork to be blacked out. And I dislike black wheels too.
Best looking estate on sale at the moment and the best looking BMW. Shame it's so exoribantly expensive!
looks so much better than the sedan, still find the front ugly af but now at least the rest of the car looks nicer, tho the base model front looks much better than the ones with black trim
real range in winter on autobahn is 250 km. not worth at the price
Lea such a wonderful young lady! She is so beautiful and humble at the same time! Very rare combination nowadays!
Nice color. Good to see options other than the classic boring choices.
Good to see bmw figured out how to have dynamic steering rear wheels without it impacting the trunk space, this was a lost feature that bothered me when ordering the new E Class combi.
But it is impacted no? No space under the trunk floor and really narrow between wheel arches.
Love it! But you can already see a lot of scratches on that exterior piano black 🤦🏻😭
Excellent reveal, Thomas. Thanks. Can't wait for your test drive ) Really like the new 5 series. Would gladly take the regular 5 series as second car )
This 5 Series will be perfect in a team bright spec!
Oxide Grey Metallic with wood trim and white seats!
Very nice
Finally, BMW makes an estate version of their models which does not look like an undertaker's car...
You didn't show if the tailgate glass opens separately. It was a normal feature with BMW tourings. Not sure if this one has that option
Not possible anymore
Who is here just to get a look at what the M5 estate will look like😂
Their strategy to have one platform for all drive trains does mean it’s a jack of all and master of none (ice V e).
No split opening of the tailgate, no electric storage cover anymore? Cost cuts never stop at BMW.
We are all waiting for that M5 Touring with V8
that sensor panel sticking out of the middle of the grilles is absolutely absurd looking! 👀 All the gloss black trim looks so cheap, like something off a Renault Clio. BMW just make really ugly cars now
Good point
Given that I don't see myself spending money for any other body shape than an estate, this is appealing and it'll be fun to see what of the small problems will be fixed for production model. Personally, I have to add that if there has to be a panoramic glass roof, it's great that this one at least has a proper sliding fabric cover. The glass roof is a feature many companies love to push down the throat and doing plenty of winter driving, something I'd pay to not have. I hate the cold eminating down to the neck from those pointless glass roofs when it's -30 C..But even a fairly thin fabric cover provides surprising amounts of insulation.
This is so far the most beautiful BMW design. Inside and out. 🥰
A do not see any now 🧐 That missing rear window opening is 🤦💩
Thomas, does the rear window opens separately like in G31?
Sadly no
So silly to remove this traditional feature. New BMWs just go backwards all the time.
This German car presenter is so damn funny 😆 I always have to mute him otherwise I can’t concentrate on the car that he’s presenting 😂😂😂
The G31 had gas struts for lower parcel shelf
The elegance of BMW
This new Skoda looks nice
This is the true bombshell of the day.
Really nice video!
Greetings from Debrecen,Hungary where the neue klasse will be built in the new factory.
Cheers! Oh cool!
(16:40) ... yeah, I prefer all-metal roofs myself, because of all the problems with glass in the roofs (that your mechanics mention, but which are rife everywhere on automotive forums) ... they are hard to keep clean, they add weight and cost, they can crack (and in many cases even shatter/explode) from kicked up or falling debris (rocks/branches) or from temperature differentials over time (heat/cold, on a flat surface), they can be annoying heat-wise and light-wise in cars where you can't shut out the roof-glass light, and they can be much worse in a rollover accident than all-metal roofs.
Anyone else notice the 5 debossed into the b pillar when the front door was open? 15:27
Beautiful feature
Finally something good from bmw
Looks better than the sedan, yes, but compared to the previous generation, it still looks weird and much uglier.
I was going for the i5 sedan before I watched this video. Now, I am torn between the touring version vs the sedan. 😊 As usual, it all comes down to what the wife wants. 😅
I know I might be in the minority, but I like the Cape York Green metallic color. I also like the interior white colored seats.
BMW stopped selling the Kombi/Touring/Estate in South Africa, I think it was not a good move. Especially now, I think there is a sense of being bored with everything being SUV. Great review Thomas the Cat.
hammer auto. mittlerweile ist der unterschied im design zwischen E-Klasse und 5-er ech enorm
This new model makes me love my F11 more
Thomas, please tell me they are going to make the real two-door shooting brake introduced last year! 😀 Great review as always, thank you!

Yes, the Z4 concept touring coupe. Any news? @@autogefuehl

Hi, thanks for a good review again but I have a question. What's the luggage capacity for the new 5-series Touring? I have today a 530d x-Drive Touring 2023 and will go for the same engine again....
Besten Dank! Verständliche Punkte
Holy cow she's a beaut! Pity we'll never get this here in the US in anything other than the M5 version.
Great video, well done!
I need a diesel in black. It looks amazing
Oh I really love station/sports wagons just like 5 series Touring! Please bring them back! Sexy, slim and yet useful 5 door cars!
