  • The Great War: Western Front has all the makings of a fun, challenging & replayable historical strategy game. Awesome turn based campaigns with deep technology trees, dynamic events and a decent AI with really fun real time battles that are quite similar to Total War.
It's been a year and 3 major updates since the launch of the game in March 2023! So in this video I want to revisit this World War 1 strategy from Petroglyph to see how the game plays today, whether it's improved enough on the issues it launched with and whether it's worth buying & playing in 2024!

While things can get repetitive, and despite multiplayer campaigns still missing, I still think Great War: The Western Front is really great fun. Hopefully there's more coming with modding support recently released & hopefully some of the issues I've mentioned here get addressed in future updates. What do you think? Is Great War: The Western Front worth playing? Let me know below!

I absolutely adore this game, but after 130 hours some core issues with the game have really started to hold back my enjoyment
1: If you capture an objective, in the next battle you should still hold that objective
2: Executing proper combined arms as the player is far too easy; I shouldn't be able to properly coordinate infantry and artillery day 1
3: There needs to be infantry level squad weapons (rifle grenades, light machine guns, etc.) to enable the suppression of machine guns and other strongpoints rather than artillery being the one to do the job, and infantry should be able to attack other infantry in trenches
3a: Machine guns need to be mobile, if very slow, to allow you to move them as need be, and be a vital part of defending against counter attacks when you capture a trench, giving light machine guns a significant role
4: A lot of maps are either far too shallow to execute proper defense in depth tactics (i.e. a forward tripwire type line, with a secondary main defensive line and 3rd reserve line far to the rear) or too wide for the Pop Cap
5: The building system discourages building barbed wire and bunkers since they take up space you need for trenches (bunkers are too big and barbed wire can't touch trenches)
6: The AI really cannot do combined arms, and just relies on weight of numbers and spamming artillery to get anything done
7: The AI cannot build cohesive trench networks that actually feel difficult to attack and breakthrough
8: Bombers need a nerf; I'm beyond sick of the AI sending in a pair of bombers and wiping out literally every MG and mortar emplacement at the start of every match unless I put up fighters

If it's on sale and available for a few bucks then pick it up for sure, otherwise absolutely not. It's a middling game at best via a steep discount and a bad one at worse at full price.

I bought The Great War: Western Front when it was released but due to my huge backlog of games have not given it the attention it deserves yet, shamefully. I wonder if the developers will create The Great War: Eastern Front at some point in the next few years...now that would be epic.

    6/10 is a good conclusion.
One of the most disgustung things are the fact you have to buy new equipment on a map you fight even before as attacker f.e. Trenches remain but not ur MGs or artillery batteries.
So u have to waste ur supply again :/ No logic here.
And like u said, the researchpoints are also damn limited as well.
And this terrible patfinding. Costs you entire squads because the wobble wobble arround trench entrances and becomes shot :/ Or run about open field insteat of using trenches.
This game has a lot of potential but it has still its problems..for a long time already.

I absolutely adore the soundtrack, the art, and they've nailed the atmosphere and gameplay for what it should be being a WW1 game.
Would love to see just more polish or a multiplayer campaign as you said. Not sure if the devs are done with it but a second iteration of this game could do wonders. I sincerely hope they consider this successful enough to keep going or revisit in the future as we need more games like this.

Just picked it up in the Spring sale so far not the an esay game to get to grips within the 2hrs return window with a steam product . I would have prefered it to have start from day one of the conflict in 1914 instead only after the Germans advance was stalled by the French , then only after the Race to the Sea and the start of the Trench building.
It would have been nice to see the War of movment and advance become stagnation and slaughter that it became.
So far I find it intresting though I have only managed the training lessons and I really need to go back over some of that.
Hopfully with support and mods it can become a bigger RTS game set in WW1. A war that was total madness in its killing of Men of all the Nation who took part.
Just take Verdun in 1916 somthing like 260.000 Frenchmen killed or wonded for the Germans 230.000 roughly it is said that the Germans lost the War at Verdun in 1916. Saying that it still last almost two more years and those losses just grew bigger and bigger.
Still this is just a game.

TL;DR THIS IS NOT A TOTAL WAR GAME.
This game is NOT a Total War game for many reasons. It lacks to scope and scale of a Total War game, it lacks the historical accuracies and variety that Total War games have. You can't manage cities and the economy, there are no agents or individuals you can use to influence the campaign. Pretty much all the units in the game share the same stats regardless of nation. You end up fighting the same battles over and over and over again. It becomes a bore fairly quickly. We've seen a lack of updates from the devs. No modding support for the community who would actually fix this game. I was very excited to see a WWI RTS game coming out and it ended up being a dud.

The animations are shocking, all the units have the same animations when leaving or entering a trench, some units fight, others freeze and just stand there waiting for the next 1 on 1 combat. The battles look repetitive and boring. The artwork is poor, the mechanics are poor.
The game had monumental amounts of potential and I was monitoring it from early on, but upon release it was a right mess.
Very samey and very repetative. I would price the game at £10. I think that would be fair for the content.

I shouldn't be able to kill a guy with 2 .45 rounds but I need 8 AK rounds b/c of "balance". This is a WWI game. It was a stupid war. Arty and MGs were king. If you get caught out in the open you die. If you remove this reality to make it more "game fun" then you remove the entire purpose of its existence. This game serves a niche fan-base, but for those of us who love it...we love it b/c if I send an assault w/o properly suppressing the enemy arty, I'm gonna lose the assault force. Cuz that's facts.
