Your disassembly videos are not only unique and helpful, they also demystify the internal magic of our knives, allowing a deeper appreciation (or not) for how they were made. One thing I've wondered: Is factory assembly sometimes automated? Hard to imagine a hundred Shabazzkins hunkered over a workbench assembling Dragonfly's.
even on the cheapest chinese knives, there's usually a guy at the end of the line slapping it together. How much that guy cares may vary wildly, but it's difficult to make a machine have enough dexterity to perform assembly.
Disassembled two today and one had a single bronze washer, the other didn’t. Mysteries of Seki City.
I was looking for some kind of clamp to use when reassembling mine. Never considered a zip tie. Brilliant, so more thanks to Rob. This is more of a PITA than expected. Next time I'll leave the locking mechanism alone and just do the blade. Much easier.
Thanks for another helpful post.
Nice to see the disassembly of that knife. If you are down to your last zip tie, you can make it reusable by just defeating the locking pawl on the zip tie by depressing it with a small screwdriver, or blade tip. Be careful when using a knife tip as I managed to cut myself the last time I was trying to be frugal with a cheap zip tie.
Thank you! Just got a Dragonfly and this was very helpful, for future reference if I need to take it down.
The ZDP-189 Dragonfly 2 has been on my radar for so long. I think I will finally be purchasing it in a few months. I absolutely love everything about it. Thanks again Nick, great vid as always.
Alex Stark how was it?
I have been eyeing one for so long. It just seems like a lot of money for such a small knife..
@@buzzluxx1042 it's a great knife if you can swing the money. I just bought another in zome green and vg10 steelfor $58 on Amazon. It cuts like much bigger knives.
@@buzzluxx1042it is way too much no liners just plastic garbage blade play unless you tighten it down so it doesn't open smoothly
You are so prolific in your content and it's very relevant to my lifestyle interest in knives. Thank you for your time Nick, I really appreciate it.
Thanks Nick! Saved my butt on this one.
Handy Spyderco, thanks Nick
Excellent video, very illustrative. Greetings
Had a good laugh when “mounted in correctly” came up. Of course if sounds just like “mounted incorrectly”.
Thanks for the zip tie trick.
Thanks , this helped me allot
Every time I think it might be the end of the world, I watch a Nick Shabazz review. Then it's all good...
I did this the other day not knowing it was an "integral" and it was terrible 😂
Used this to disassemble my first knife ever today. Thanks for this video Nick. Appreciate it a lot!
As always, great tutorial, I took mine apart and maintained it and put it back together following your instructions on the video. Thank you !
Is it just me or are the scales missing the D shape to prevent the pivot from turning when unscrewing?
Nick.... Does the Native 5 break down the same way? Do you have a video on the Native 5 disassembly? Thanks.
Does this mean we'll be getting a video on swapping the blades between this and the G-10?
zip ties from your dad?👊
You rock, Shabazz!
Where were you last night when I took apart my dfly salt for the first time?! Lol I almost considered putting it off til today too. My lock spring actually has the "L" on both ends so took some trial and error but it all worked out in the end!
Where can I buy the 'Whoa There Lubrication'? (8:08)
Never heard of that brand & can't find it on the internet anywhere.
;-)
Good vid - appreciate it?
swap the blades between your 2 DF's. you know you want to...
Is the spring mounted in correctly or mounted incorrectly?
On my dragonfly, my pivot screw, or actually the D-pin is slightly to long and therefore there is always blade play even when fully tightened.
Initially I thought I missed an washer but according to your video it only has one.
Could I just file down the d-pin a bit or ad a nylon washer to the screw side?
Thanks for the helpful video!
Yep.
Lay sandpaper on the table, rub the screw post across it to sand ‘er down.
Is that regular rubbing alcohol that u r cleaning with?
was there a silver washer on the pivot screw? I didn't find on the first time I disassembled the knife but Spyderco's warranty department told me there should be one. I'm not so sure that's true based on what I've seen.
Could you tell me what size torx bits are needed to disassembly Spyderco knifes?
Is there a metal ring or washer to replace the rubber pivot ring on the Dragonfly?, Many people do not like this rubber ring it looks cheap and does not look like it will last long over time .
Will the back lock and the clip rust? I would hope that he was good stainless steel.
Hey Nick I couldn't find a spydeco mantra disassembly video. I am looking foward to one. I know you reviewed it bit no take down.
Never disassembled that one. Maybe someday!
K thanks
Thanks Nick, couldn't have done it without you. PS: Ever used q-tips for babies? good for those hard to reach places -JL
+Joshua Longmore Never had babies, never will. I’ll stick to Cutlery :)
Nick Shabazz I think that's also the more financially responsible decision
It's an Integral Frn Spyderco! 😂
so the frame\scales being plastic can act as the washer(s)? but that concept wouldn't work in g10??
John J. Baranski
G10 is laminated glass sheat so it will have a high friction coefficient the glass would also grind against the blade damaging the metal
The two plastics used in knife washers are nylon and ptfe
Ptfe is very slippery so the scales are probably made from some nylon blend
This works ok (not great) but it can give problems over time
The biggest problem is that you would have to replace the scales instead of replacing a couple of washers when the nylon wears out
Another problem is that nylon can react to certain chemicals so you will have to know if your oil or cleaning solution is suitable for use with nylon (you dont want to use too much alcohol or leave it on too long the alcohol will make the nylon white and brittle)
Anyone know what Torx (star bit) driver The Master is using? I was a knucklehead and bought a shitty set. I need the real deal. Thanks all!
By the process of zoom screenshot I have been able to ascertain the knowledge that you seek.
"WIHA 758 01 anti-static/conductive
For system 4 bits.Made in Germany."
It's a bit frustrating how incredibly thin the material around the pivot is on Spyderco lockbacks.
If they upsized the Dragonfly to a 3" blade, it would immediately make the Delica, the Tenacious, the Para 2, the Caly 3, the Manix 2, and several other models obsolete. I LOVE my Dragonfly. I just wish it was just a skosh bigger.
Well that was easy.😳
I wanna buy a ZDP dragonfly and a G10 dragonfly so I can put the G10 scales on the ZDP blade. Too bad they can't come like that
Is it true or did I dream yesterday's post about Spyderco's warranty no longer being voided by dis-assembly? I'm probably missing something aren't I...?
+Ni 200 Nope, it's absolutely true, the warranty is fixed. These videos were filmed months ago. See the annotation.
Haha!! No worries - saw your response to a similar comment on the G10 version. Case closed...:)
Ni: Realize that that would require me to download each video, re-edit, and then re-upload, which comes out to 10-15 minutes per Spyderco disassembly, or 6-ish hours of my life. These were filmed months ago. If you see the annotation *or* read the description, you'll see the real story.
Seems like way to much work just to wipe some pieces down and adding a little oil both of which one can argue if it’s really needed at all to this. But hey if you are into taking things apart go for it!
Sir, I usually enjoy your videos on the "breakdown, repair (if need be) and maintenance" of SPYDERCO's edged weapons. However, on this particular video, respectfully, it plainly appeared to me that you didn't know what you were doing! In your fumbling with this weapon's breakdown, my conclusion, had I been a first-time viewer of your work, would've been to just look elsewhere; ... than be ill-advised!
What weapon are you talking about?
Ha. Crazy comment.
