    Hey Nick, I am a younger viewer who uses these videos to help disassemble his knives. You have saved me twice. Once on the para 3, where I didn’t know you had to put the washer down before the pivot. And you have also helped me to get my back lock back together on my frn chaparral. I would like to sincerely thank you for saving me the heartache of not being able to enjoy 2 of my favorite knives. Thank you.

    The two screws in the scales up nearest the pivot also affect the action of the blade, loosen them a little and the blade will easily free drop, tighten them all the way down and the knife feels terrible in opening and closing.

    I took it apart and bent the spring bar very very slightly. Now the pressure required is kinda like on my dragonfly. If it was like that out of the box this would be one of the best edc knives out there

    Hi Nick, nice and informative video as always. I recently got one for myself and love it so far. I realized that you put the spring little too deeper than the original position. This would make the strong lock more stiff. In other words, you can pull out the spring a little bit to make the unlock operation easier. Just a thought.

    Thanks for this disassembly video, man I really love this little knife, it is so slicy, I feel like many people who want to buy a VG-10 Delica in 2023 would be better getting this (or a Para 3 LW, or a Sage 5 LW) instead.
    My only problem with this knife is the fact that almost instantly started getting circular scratches on each side of the base of the blade from opening/closing... Not exactly sure why, maybe it's just the FRN scales rubbing ? Certainly not a "fidget, safe queen knife", once you start using it can get some marks from this... Not a huge deal though...
    I actually love the FRN scales because add grip is a good idea to such a small knife, and in my opinion it doesn't look bad, actually the grey looks pretty classy, it's a classy (and non-threatening) knife overall. My model came from the factory with a pretty good even 15-17° angle edge.
    I put it to 13°, it's even slicier !

    I carry a Chaparral 2 Ti as my EDC. Great knife.

  • @RyanBissell

    Nick, I believe the reason the action remains so tight on the Chaparral after this lube job, is due to how much force that lockback spring is applying to the detent path on the blade. I say that because for me, the action still felt tight after lubing, even with the pivot screw in by just 1 turn. It's like that back lock is biting you twice!
    I think the solution may be to *not* lube the detent path for a while... let it wear down while you fidget with for a week. Then lube the detent path from the side, no disassembly necessary.

    Hey Nick thanks for the video! After watching this video and trying it out on my own LW Chaparral I think I might have a found a small solution to the problem you are having with the stiff back lock. If you look at when you open the knife up, the spring is slightly moved forward and has a small space behind it. When you put it back together you push it all the way back into the slot. When I played with this on mine it made it difference in how stiff the lock was.

    • @criSOME1

      I own the carbon fiber for years and it's my favorite edc knife but I'm having trouble deciding between the FRN handle or the rafir noble scales version as my next chaparral.

  • @michaeltihon3485
    @michaeltihon3485 2 года назад

    I didn't know there was a steel liner inside the frn handles, I thought it was constructed like a Dragonfly. So to me, that raises the level of this knife to almost perfection for my daily use. I think I will get one.
    So thanks for pointing that out Nick 👍

  • @homunculus777

    Just got one of these. Two things: there was a white thread lock on the screws. Secondly, I don't like the stiff and thin back lock either, but I find that if I use the nail of my thumb it doesn't hurt and I die just a little less each time I close it. I've been working the action in all evening and my thumb nail has quite the divot at this point.

    Random comment expressing my deep hatred for red loctite. Today I spent 2 hours trying to put a knife back together because I was trying to put the bearings back into their tracks and not knock them out again while I put the blade back in because I could not take the scales off due to the soaking of red loctite used on all the screws (besides the pivot thank God) upon original assembly. I did however come up with a way to do it that I never would’ve thought of previously. Thank you Nick for the great review! I may consider this knife for my new edc.

    Thanks for the great reviews Nick. I have wanted to pick up the Delica for a while now but when i finally got around to ordering one, i noticed the price increase. Then, of course, i looked to your channel for some insight into this ridiculous price increase and saw the comparison video between the Chaparral and the Delica and i agree with you 100%. I just ordered a Chaparral for $90 which includes shipping. The Delica would have been $78 from the same website. $12 more for XHP steel is not a decision for me. Just can't help but to think what a shame it is that Spyderco had to go and rip people off with the price increase. The Delica is a legend in the knife world, so why ruin a good thing? I would've bought two Delicas at the old price.

    One thing I don't like about Spyderco is how similar all the blades are. There is very little choice, and it makes half of their options pretty redundant in my opinion. You have to love full flat grinds to love Spyderco.

  • @geoffwatkins1696

    I have this knife and love it. My only complaint is the force required to press the back lock.
    Is there a modification that I can make to the spring to lighten the back action?
    Happy to take any suggestions.

    Is it me or is that blade edge ridiculously close to the backspacer when closed? I'm sure the stop pin prevents direct contact but the lack of any major gap is a bit scary.

    • @EDCwithAaron
      @EDCwithAaron 6 лет назад

      Josh Latta yeah I was thinking the same, they couldve shaved a decent amount off the backspacer on the inside and still had plenty of strength to hold the spring it seems as well.

  • @TISC13

  • @cocabandi3196

    I get the feeling that you come from a family of watchmakers which explains your being a stickler for precision. That said, what is the purpose of you taking apart every knife you get your hands on? Was that really necessary with the Chaparral? Did it really make the lock back that you previously complained about, any smoother? I wonder.

    Can this knife be disassembled without voiding the warranty? Ive seen in some Spyderco videos that you mention you cannot, but it wasnt mentioned in this one and the warranty card that came in my Chaparral box makes no mention of it. I'd love to take it apart just to lube her up and potentially file down some of the sharpness of the backlock since it did come with such immensely tight tolerances and spring.
